Description of Event:

POI or Program Oral Interpretation, should be a collection of pieces with a single theme.

Pieces must include an introduction identifying the author(s) and title(s). This often follows a brief prologue. These pieces should be a mix of prose, poetry, plays, scripts, etc that all combine to convey a theme which is found in society or is being showcased as something to change (MUST include at least 2 of the 3 and NOT original work). These pieces may be cut up into different sections that are seen throughout the piece. POI should be presented with a black poetry binder which may be used as a prop and must be in the performer’s control at all times. Opening and closing the book for effect or transition is allowed. Performers may not use other props or visuals. It may be memorized.

What to look for in POI:

  • Usage of a binder

  • Collective Theme that is understood

  • All pieces relate to each other

  • Distinct characters

  • Distinct shifts from each source

  • Clear message
