Event Description:

These instructions will appear on all judge ballots for Extemp:

Time limit:

5-7 minutes long, with a 30-second grace period. Speeches more than 30 seconds over or under should be scored one rank lower than they otherwise would have been.

Description of Event:

In Extemporaneous Speaking (or Extemp for short) competitors choose from three topics, have 30 minutes to prepare a speech, and then present their speech in front of a judge.. The preparation is completed before they enter the room. Students should provide the judge with their topic prior to beginning speech; please write their topic on that student’s ballot. Many competitors will ask for hand signals from the judge to gauge their time. Clarify with the speaker how you are going to signal time before they begin the speech. The topic will most likely be political and/or on current events either domestic or international. The speech should include multiple pieces of evidence to support the speaker’s claims. Competitors may choose to use note cards during their performance; please do not penalize them for this unless it becomes a distraction.

What to look for in Extemp:

  • Organization/Structure (introduction, main points, conclusion, transitions)

  • Thorough use of reliable evidence

  • Use of logic to advance their point

  • Knowledge about the topic (though they are not required to be full-on experts, as there are hundreds of possible topics they may draw)

  • Movement (distinction between the points)

  • Citing sources correctly (Source, Author, Date written, etc.)
