Time Limit:

5-10 minutes with a 30 second grace period (Anything over results in the student being scored one rank less than they would have been otherwise).

Description of Event:

Dramatic interpretation is a performance or short skit of a cut piece of published literature. Pieces must include an introduction that identifies the author and title (this often follows a brief prologue). The piece must be memorized and include rising action, climax, and falling action. The student should be able to develop deep characters who are complex and meaningful. No props or costumes are allowed; students should pantomime clearly and effectively to show actions throughout the piece.

Key things to look for in Drama:

  • Enunciation, emphasis, pronunciation, and diction

  • Good pacing and staging

  • Physical expression

  • Strong and distinct characters and character choices

  • Effective selection of parts of the piece that are performed (i.e. the “cutting”)
