Event Description:

These instructions will appear on all judge ballots for Lincoln Douglas Debate:

Lincoln-Douglas debate is a philosophical, two person debate. Each competitor will present on a predetermined issue, presented in the form of a resolution. One side will speak in the affirmative (“aff.” side) in favor of a resolution while the other speaks against the resolution (“neg.” side.) The resolution will focus on issues, ideas, values, and philosophies, rather than evidence. Debaters are expected to be courteous towards one another and the judge(s).

Debaters should frame their arguments around values and may offer a “criterion” value to guide the debate. The value is the standard by which a side is basing their case upon, and how the resolution will impact whichever side the person is arguing. The value criterion is the standard to which the value is held to, or how the value will be achieved. No new arguments should be brought up in rebuttals or especially in the final speech by the affirmative; final speeches should be used to summarize the key points or details about why one side should be declared the winner.

When judging, keep your eyes out for:

  • Value of presentation and case

  • Evidence/reasoning

  • Sound reasoning behind arguments

  • Structure/ Organization

  • Professionalism

  • Value/Value Criterion clash

  • Speaking skills
