Time limit:

7 minutes total for planning AND presentation of speech. The timer will start the moment the student informs the judge which topic they have chosen to speak on. Students decide how much time they want to devote to planning and presentation..

Description of Event:

Impromptu is an event where competitors draw three prompts from the judge. They then select one to speak about. The moment they announce which topic they have selected, the seven-minute timer starts. They have 7 total minutes to plan AND present their speech. They can choose how they split the time between planning and speaking. They are allowed to use paper for the planning and presentation of the speech. They then give the speech which can be light-hearted or serious. Their speech cannot be presented with notes and must include an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Here’s what to look for in impromptu:

  • Organization/Structure (introduction, main points, conclusion, transitions)

  • Sound arguments and analysis of the prompt

  • Holding the audience’s attention

  • Delivery (voice, gestures, movement)

  • Eye contact

  • Time management
