Event Description:

NSDA rules for sources and preparation will be followed.

 

Directions:

Students will prepare and deliver a speech in an impromptu manner, with little to no prior preparation. Three potential topics will be presented to students, from which they will select one to speak on. The time limit for the event will begin when students make their selection. Speeches may be informational, persuasive, or any other purpose. Students will be evaluated on the strength of their analysis and organization, and the fluidity of their delivery.

Speeches should be delivered from memory without the use of visual aides for the audience. The use of a manuscript or other speaking aides is prohibited. Movement is allowed during the speech.

Speakers may not connect to the internet at any point during the speech or preparation period. The use of paper and writing utensil is permitted during the preparation period only.

 

Time Limit: 7 minutes (30 second grade period allowed), including both preparation and speaking time. There is no minimum or maximum to speaking time. Time begins at the selection of a topic.
