Event Description:
The NSDA Informative Speaking rules require a 10-minute original speech, delivered from memory, designed to educate the audience without a persuasive or entertainment goal. The topic must be factual and appropriately addressed, with visual aids being optional but not required. The speech must be truthful, with any non-factual personal references clearly identified. Speech requirements
- Time limit:10 minutes with a 30-second grace period.
- Original work: The speech must be written and delivered by the student.
- Purpose: To inform and educate the audience, not to persuade or entertain, though secondary purposes are acceptable.
- Delivery: The speech must be delivered from memory.
- Content: Must be truthful, with any non-factual personal references identified.
- Visual aids: Allowed but not required, must not use electronic equipment, and should enhance the message without distracting.
Quotations
- Limit: No more than 150 words of direct quotation are allowed.
- Identification: All direct quotes must be cited in a printed script.
- Paraphrasing: Extensive paraphrasing is discouraged.
