Event Description:

Original Prose and Poetry (OPP)

Original Prose and Poetry (OPP) gives you the chance to showcase your own creative writing. You may perform prose, poetry, or a mix of both. Pieces can be humorous, dramatic, or anywhere in between. Because every performance is unique, OPP is one of the most dynamic and challenging speech events.

Rules and Requirements

  • Original Work: Your piece must be your own writing. The same subject may not be used in OPP and in Expository, Advocacy, or Oratory during the same year or in future years.
  • Manuscript Submission:
    • If outside sources are used, follow MLA citation guidelines and include a works cited page.
    • If no sources are used, include a short statement confirming the work is entirely original.
    • References to another person’s work or public persona (e.g., a celebrity) are allowed up to 150 quoted words, but must be credited in the manuscript.
  • Performance Rules:
    • Maximum time is 10 minutes (a 30-second grace period is often allowed). While there is no minimum, successful pieces typically run 5–6 minutes or longer.
    • No props or costumes may be used.
