Event Description:
Commentary and Editorial — Official Rules
1. Event Description
Commentary and Editorial is a limited-preparation speech event in which students deliver an original, pre-written speech providing commentary on a current event or social issue.
2. Time Limit
Speeches must be 3–5 minutes with a 30-second grace period. No minimum time is required, but speeches under 3
minutes are discouraged. Exceeding 5:30 may prevent a 1st place ranking.
3. Preparation Rules
Competitors must write the speech before the tournament. They may bring notes or a printed copy. The speech must be
the student’s original work. No coaching during the round.
4. Delivery Rules
Students may use notes but should deliver conversationally. Memorization is not required. No visual aids or electronics
are allowed.
5. Topic Requirements
Topics must involve current events, public issues, or contemporary concerns. A clear perspective or stance must be
taken.
6. Judging Criteria
Judges evaluate: analysis and insight, organization, delivery, evidence/examples, and adherence to time.
7. Prohibited Actions
No props, visuals, or multimedia. No excessive time violations. No plagiarism or non-original work.
8. Tournament Use
This event often runs as a supplemental event at NSDA Nationals and some local invitationals. Students may bring multiple commentaries to different topics.
