Event Description:

This is to be an original speech presented by the speaker, of current fact and opinion of a designated topic as researched from multiple sources. Speaker will draw topic and have 30 minutes to prepare before presenting. When speaker arrives, verify contestant code and last name on ballot, indicate which round at the top of the ballot, and ask for the slip of paper identifying the topic drawn. The speech is to be not less than 5 minutes, and not greater than 7 minutes, with a 30-second grace period either way. Hand signals can be used if requested by speaker. Usually a signal at 5, 6, and 7 minutes is sufficient.

Critical elements for judging and comments:

Is the information well-chosen, pertinent, and sufficient to support the main thought of the topic? Look for at least 3 cited sources.

Did the speech track logically - Introduction, 2-3 points discussed in body, Conclusion

Was the grammar appropriate? Did the speaker have poise, fluency, enunciation, expressions, eye contact, gestures? Did it hold your interest?

The speaker should answer the question, and may take a firm stand on the issue. The personal viewpoint of the judge is irrelevant. Judging should be to the effectiveness with which the subject is developed and presented, not whether you agree with the stand the speaker has taken.
