Event Description:
Commentary is a variant of extemporaneous speaking in which contestants are given 20 minutes to prepare a 5 minute speech. Topics can be short phrases or questions that draw from societal, political, historic, or popular interest, and are generally more broad than traditional extemp topics. Students should provide commentary on the topic, and can do so in many ways - advocating for a position, providing a humerous explanation, exploring a topic in depth, etc. (The depth of how people respond to these prompts is part of what makes Commentary cool. You might want to watch a video to explain it).
