Event Description
Improvised Acting (IA) is an individual acting event in which a student creates and performs an original scene after drawing a prompt. The performance should establish character(s), a clear situation or conflict, and a developed resolution.
A brief narrated introduction must be used to establish the setting and characters. Performers will draw three prompts and select one for performance. Preparation takes place in the performance room, and competitors may not leave once a topic has been selected.
The performer must present their topic slip to the judge(s) prior to beginning the performance.
Rules
- No costumes, props, or makeup permitted
- One chair may be used
- Performer must remain in the room after selecting a prompt
- Topic slip must be shown to judge(s) before performance
- ACTAA follows NSDA interpretation event guidelines unless otherwise specified
Time Rules
- Total time: 7 minutes (includes prep + performance)
- Grace period: 30 seconds
- Exceeding grace: student may not be ranked 1st
- No minimum time requirement
- Judges may use timing devices at their discretion

- Structure and coherence of the scene
- Vocal and physical performance
