Event Description

Poetry & Prose (OPP) is a platform for students to perform self-written work that showcases creativity, voice, and storytelling. Competitors present material that may be written in poetic form, prose, or a combination of both.

Entry Requirements

  • Performances may include:
    • Original Poetry
    • Prose
    • Spoken word
    • Poetry
  • A manuscript must be available upon request.

Performance Guidelines

  • Time Limit: 7 minutes with a 30-second grace period
    • (Maximum: 7:30)
  • Performances may be memorized or delivered with a manuscript.
  • Competitors may use vocal variety, movement, and characterization.
  • A brief introduction is optional but not required.

Use of Materials

  • A binder or manuscript may be used.
  • No props, costumes, or additional set pieces are permitted.
  • Limited staging (movement, gestures) is allowed but should not distract from the text.

Content Expectations

  • Performances should reflect original thought, creativity, and personal voice.
  • Topics may include (but are not limited to):
    • Identity
    • Social issues
    • Personal experiences
    • Storytelling and narrative reflection
  • Content should be appropriate for a school setting.

Judging Criteria

Judges evaluate competitors based on:

  • Originality & Creativity
    • Strength of writing, imagery, and structure
  • Voice & Authenticity
    • Personal connection and emotional impact
  • Performance & Delivery
    • Vocal control, pacing, clarity, and engagement
  • Interpretation
    • Effective communication of theme, tone, and meaning

Penalties

  • Exceeding the 30-second grace period may result in the competitor not being ranked 1st.
  • Violations of originality may result in disqualification.

Additional Notes

  • This event emphasizes student voice and creative expression over technical polish alone.
  • Strong performances balance writing quality with engaging delivery.
