Event Description:
Documentary Short Film (10-Minute Max)
The Documentary Short Film event challenges students to create an original nonfiction film that explores a real-world topic, issue, person, or event. Films should demonstrate research, storytelling, and technical skill, while engaging the audience through a clear and compelling narrative.
Submission Requirements
- Maximum length: 10 minutes (including credits).
- Films must be student-produced and student-edited.
- Entries must be submitted electronically by the posted deadline.
- Accepted formats: MP4 or MOV (recommended).
- Each entry must include a title card at the beginning.
Content Guidelines
- Films must be nonfiction and grounded in real events, people, or issues.
- Content should reflect thoughtful research and accuracy.
- Students may include:
- Interviews
- Voiceover narration
- Archival footage (must be cited)
- Original footage and photography
- All sources (audio, video, images, data) must be credited within the film or in end credits.
Originality & Collaboration
- Work must be primarily created by the student(s) entered.
- Teams of up to 3 students are permitted (optional—your call).
- Any outside assistance (music, clips, etc.) must be properly attributed.
Restrictions
- No copyrighted material may be used without proper attribution or permission.
- Content must adhere to school-appropriate standards.
- AI-generated content is allowed only if disclosed and used as a tool, not as the primary creator.
Judging Criteria
- Content & Research (30%) — Accuracy, depth, and insight
- Storytelling (25%) — Structure, clarity, and narrative strength
- Creativity (15%) — Originality and engagement
- Technical Execution (20%) — Editing, sound, visuals, pacing
- Impact (10%) — Overall effectiveness and message
