Extemp Speaking
Event Description:
7 minute speech delivered on contemporary events after a 30 minute preparation period. Competitors will report to the Extemp Prep Room and where they will "draw" three potential speech topics, selecting one. At the conclusion of the "draw," competitors will have 30 minutes of timed and proctored preparation to draft their speech. All preparation must occur exclusively in the Extemp Prep Room. No materials other than the topic prompt selected by the competitor may exit the Extemp Prep Room. NO GENERATIVE ARTIFICAL INTELIGENCE may be utilized in drafting substantive or structural portions of the competitor's speech. This means no GAI for speech content or for the outline of a speech. GAI is only permissible to be utilized to amass background research on a topic and is never permitted to be cited as a primary source.
At the conclusion of a competitor's preparation time, the competitor will navigate their way to the competition room assigned in their tabroom ballot and deliver their speech. No visual aids are permitted. Competitors are not permitted to time themselves, but may request and receive time signals from judges. 30 second grace period. If a competitor's speech time exceeds the the grace period they must not be ranked 1st in the section.
