2025 — Holladay, UT/US

Mixed Interp (POI, DI, HI)

Abbreviation INT
Format Speech
Entry Fee $0.00
Entry 1 competitors per entry

Event Description:

The student performs a scene from a movie, book, short story, etc. There are several types, humorous(HI), dramatic(DI), duo, and program oral(POI). There will be ~5 people in each round, and they go in the order decided by Tabroom. Competitors will begin their pieces, pause to share an impact/message, then finish the piece.

The judge should be looking for memorization, acting skills, movement, and energy. Memorization is the most important, second is acting skills. If a competitor uses a binder/script and does not have their piece memorized, they cannot be placed first and must be last in the round. POI does allow a binder, but it must be in the competitor’s hand for the entire piece. If the speech is less than 5 minutes, the competitor cannot place first. For HI, DI, and Duo, the piece must be from one source, though it could be multiple scenes put together(i.e. The first scene from a movie and the last). POI is made of multiple poems and short stories. Most speakers will have their pieces memorized, but stumbling over one or two words should only merit a lower ranking in a very close round. If the competitor has multiple characters, they should be distinct in physicality and voice. Movement should be intentional and important to the piece. Competitors should be invested in the piece-if they have it memorized but are not putting effort into acting, they should not be first, unless nobody else in the round has their piece memorized.

Check with Tabroom about specific tournament rules. Some tournaments do not allow lying on the ground, others do. If a competitor uses a script, some tournaments must have them placed last, while at others the competitor cannot be first.

Impacts are important. They must be specific to the piece and relevant to the material/mood. However, the purpose is not as important as acting and memorization. Even if the impact is meaningful and relevant, the competitor should not place first if they do not have their piece memorized with good acting.
