Original Oratory
Event Description:
Students deliver a self-written, ten-minute speech on a topic of their choosing. Limited in their ability to quote words directly, Original Oratory competitors craft an argument using evidence, logic, and emotional appeals. Topics range widely, and may be informative or persuasive in nature. The speech is delivered from memory.
Both content and presentation are equally important.
Look for persuasive, well delivered speeches, with unique content that makes you think. If they give you an organized roadmap (first i'll talk…, then i'll say… etc.) that is a bonus. The speaker should present well, utilize appropriate hand-gestures and facial expressions, and draw the audience in by using varied tone and speed. The topic should be specific, not cliche, and be successful in persuading. The speaker should utilize personal experiences, stories and significant statistics to support their argument. Be careful to not let personal bias and opinions affect ranking.
