Event Description:

This event is a 1 vs 1, fast-paced debate. The method by which the topic and side is chosen is different for each tournament, sometimes being pre-assigned, sometimes via coin flip. The process should be explained in the judges meeting at each individual tournament. After the topic and side are chosen, the students will begin the one minute preparation period in which they will attempt to construct a (typically) 3-point constructive.

In general, judges should be looking for a well structured case but more importantly good rhetoric. SPAR is generally considered to be a speech event, so judges should be looking for a well delivered and convincing speech. Of course, if the points backing someone's argument are not coherent, it should not do as well. If there are small holes in the competitors argument that you notice, only deduct points of the opposing team points them out in cross examination or rebuttal. During Cross-examination, the judge should favor those who go on the offensive, asking questions and constantly pressuring their opponent. During the rebuttal, competitors who address all of their opponents points should be favored. However the most important thing in spar is how the message is conveyed, the actual content comes as a second; it is still important but not as important as the rhetoric.
