Abbreviation ExDeb

Entry Fee $5.00
Entry Limit Per School 10
Entry 1 competitors per entry

Event Description:

Entry limit: 10 entries. Extemp Debate is for solo entries only, not partners.

Judge quota: 1 judge per 4 debaters. Judges for Extemp Debate are only required on Saturday, but of course we'd welcome their help on Friday as well.

Prep Time

Extemp debate topics will be announced 30 minutes before the start of the round. Every round will have a different topic. There are no particular restrictions placed on debaters during prep time - they may consult research files, online sources, and may discuss the topics with teammates and with coaches.
Sides will be assigned when the topic is released, so debaters will know which side of the motion to prepare for.

Flights
Extemp debate will likely be flighted, meaning that two separate debates will happen back to back, judged by the same individual. Debaters will be assigned to one of the two flights.
This means that students in the second flight will get roughly 45 min of prep time instead of 30, but debaters should always have equal prep time to their competitor.

Schedule
2 prelim rounds will be offered, with a 3rd round for competitors who won at least 1 of their prelim rounds. (In other words, those with an 0-2 record will not advance to the 3rd round.) After the 3rd round, debaters will be ranked according to record and speaker points. At a minimum, all undefeated debaters will be recognized at awards.

We will follow the NSDA format and rules for Extemp Debate:
