Novice LD Debate Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideI competed in both LD and CX Debate for two years in Kansas...a long time ago. I have judged occasionally throughout the years. For the most part, I am a stock issues/"old-school judge" with a strong desire to see debators learn to use their skills in the real world and challenge themselves to grow. I believe one of the strongest skills you can have is to adapt to the judge. In light of that, here are some notes on my preferences:
I will flow the round and love organized arguments/debates, please don't jump back and forth between aff and neg. Go down the arguments in a logical way and use clear sign posts. If you group and/or cross-apply, make it clear.
Kritiks - Don't like them.
Theory - If you do down this path, I prefer it to be highly structured: interpretation, violation, standards, why I should vote on it.
Topicality - I will listen to topicality arguments, but there has to be a clear line of analysis and you have to tell me why I should vote on it. Don't use it as a time suck, only when it is a truly applicable argument.
*I would much prefer to focus on the criteria, standards, and impacts with clear voting reasons identified and argued for.
Speed - It is your job to be clear and understandable, regardless of your speed. I am comfortable with a moderate spreading as long as you slow down enough to emphasize the key arguments.
Flex Prep - Unless there is a stated rule, you should agree upon this at the start of the round. I will not be listening or weighing arguments during prep and believe designated CX is the best forum for clarifications, but it's your debate round.
Presumption - Neither side has it. Don't assume that saying it makes it so.
Anything else - Just ask, I will be open and honest.
Most of all, have fun and enjoy the sport!
I am a parent judge who has been judging for half a dozen tournaments. The main event that I judge is LD. Please speak at a moderate pace. Please be respectful to each other. Any unacceptable behavior will result in low speaks. I usually focus on your impacts and voter issues. If you can tell me why your argument matter and what the outcome might possibly be if this doesn't happen...it will make it easier for me to vote for you. I don't disclose the results.
Good luck and have fun!
