Event Description:

SPAR is a 1 vs 1 debate of 13 minutes. There are 3 debates which will happen during this round. Start by calling up speaker 1 and 2. Flip a coin. The winner of the coin toss will receive two resolutions, one serious (ex. Charter schools are good for education in America) and one not serious (ex. Ramen noodles are superior to pizza). They then select the resolution and set the tone for the round. The loser of the coin toss will chose the side, Prop or Opp. Here is the format:

  • 2 minutes of prep for both sides

  • Prop Case 2 minutes

  • Opp Case 2 minutes

  • Prop/Opp Crossfire 3 minutes

  • Prop Rebuttal 2 minutes

  • Opp Rebuttal 2 minutes

After the debate, start the process again with the next pair (3 vs. 4), and the next (5 vs 6).

At the end of the round, rank the speakers 1-6 as you would for a speech round. In this variation of SPAR, debate win/loss is irrelevant. Award speaker points on a scale of 31-50.
