JH Duet Musical
Event Description:
Criteria:
For a Duet Musical Theatre (DM) performance, two (2) students must present one (1) musical selection from apublished score written for musical theatre written for 2 players. The judges will consider how well the pieceis acted as well as how well it is sung.
*Duet scenes should be composed of a single scene written for 2 players. Each participant mustbe actively involved in the selection chosen for performance.
*The performance may contain dialogue if included in the libretto, however, it should primarily be a"sung and not spoken" selection.
*Two (2) chairs may be safely used during the performance. No other scenic elements or furnitureare allowed. "Safely" means that items may be used in a safe manner but should not be used asprops (e.g., pushed over, lifted, etc.).
*The performer should slate at the start of the performance and include the performer’s name,titles of selections being performed (e.g., "Don't Rain on My Parade" from Funny Girl ), and thename of the playwrights(s) and/or composer(s).
*Scenes must be presented from memory. Scripts may not be used.
*Time limit is 5 minutes (if the performer goes beyond the time limit, the performer may not be rankedfirst). There is no time minimum..
*Time begins with the first word or acting beat (if it precedes the first word) of the presentation.
* Note: It is the expectation that performances are the artistic creation of the performer(s). If there issuspicion of plagiarism, please be prepared to cite the source that was copied and consult with thetournament director.
Comments:
You are expected to provide performers with thorough feedback regarding the slate, use of transitions into and out of
character, ability to create a believable character, communication of objective, tactics, and relationships through both
dialogue and music, use of focus and concentration, vocal skill, technique, and expression, use of dance and/or
movement, and integration of voice, body, movement, and staging.
