OVERVIEW:

STRIKE:

Before the round begins, competitors will be assigned sides and meet each other in a predetermined draw location. 30 minutes before the debate is set to begin, the two speakers will receive a draw slip with 5 new and unique topics. They will move to an area in the room where they can talk, and from these 5 topics, the speaker on the Negation will choose one topic they wish to remove from the round. Affirmation will look at the four remaining topics and likewise choose one they wish to remove. Neg will look at the remaining three topics, and remove one. Aff will then choose between the final two topics to determine what will the topic of the round. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT BOTH COMPETITORS ARE AWARE OF WHAT TOPIC HAS BEEN CHOSEN. Competitors may ask questions and consider what their opponent would like to debate, but are not obligated to take that into account. As both side strike twice, each side has an equal say in what is chosen, so complaints of ground skew or critiques of fairness of resolutions will hold little to no weight in rounds.

PREP:

After the topic has been chosen, the debaters are free to then break away from each other and prep their respective cases with whatever is remaining of the 30 minutes. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that Strike occurs quickly so that actual prep time can be maximized. During prep, competitors are free to use ANY material available to them. This can include other teammates, coaches, and the internet. EVERY pair of debaters will be given the same five topics to strike from. As such it is possible that teammates strike into the same resolution and even side. They are HIGHLY encouraged to prep together. Debate should be a collaborative experience, and IPDA excels at this primarily through team prep. That being said, Strike MUST occur independently of teammates, meaning debaters should not consult their team until after they have chosen a topic.

ROUND:

At the conclusion of 30 minutes from Draw time, students should be in their competition rooms with their judges. They are allowed to bring any handwritten notes and materials necessary to run the round EXCEPT FOR THEIR LAPTOP. Students may NOT access the internet during the debate. The round will run according to the 5262353 times set above, with no additional prep time after the round begins. Following the round, students should pack their things and return to their team location. Judges will evaluate the round and submit a ballot to Tabroom. There will be no verbal disclosure or feedback.
