Abbeville High Speech Tournament
2023 — Abbeville, LA, LA/US
Novice Oral Interpretation
Event Description:
Students will present an interpretation of a prose or poetry selection in alternating rounds, the order of which will be
governed by the tournament director. Selections must be published, and the performer should establish the title and
author(s) in a brief introduction. The poetry being presented may be from one selection or a series of selections by
the same author or developing the same theme. Original poetry, verse written as drama, and plays are not allowed.
Different characters may be established but are not required. Adaptations may be made for the purpose of continuity
only. A reasonable balance of eye contact must be maintained between the audience and the manuscript. The
binder may be used as a prop. While singing is permitted, it should not be excessive or dominate the performance.
The contestant must remain standing and may not kneel or sit on the floor.
