Event Description:
Contestants will draw a topic slip containing three topics (one word, one philosophical phrase, one policy topic) and have 30 seconds to prepare before speaking. Total speaking time (NOT including the 30 seconds of preparation) is 5 minutes with a 30 second grace period. The judge or timekeeper should use cards or hand signals showing the time left in the speech (4, 3, 2, 1, ½, 0). Notes, materials, or previously prepared speech outlines cannot be used while the contestant speaks. Contestants are not allowed to hear the other speakers before them, but after a contestant has spoken s/he may remain in the room to hear the speakers who follow.
