Hello all, I am a parent judge and I have been judging LD, PF, and other individual events for the last 3-4 years.

DECISION:My decision evaluates all scopes of the debate: framework, arguments, reasoning, evidence, links, etc. However, telling me why your IMPACTS are important and how you better achieve them than your opponent is key for you to win this debate. I do not care about what kind of impacts you give me, but it would be good if you start out with specifics and then at the end you summarize with broad ones so I know where you are deriving your impacts from.

FLOWING: I will flow a line-by-line analysis, however, I prefer OVERVIEWS (not only in your 2ars or 2nrs) because they clear things up for me and make the ballot easier too.

OTHER PREFERENCES: For speaking, please speak clearly and speak to the point. In terms of speed, please do NOT SPREAD . If you speak marginally fast or faster than conversational, it is okay as long as you slow down at the impactful parts, tags, numbers you want me to flow, etc. Do NOT RUN THEORY because I will probably not understand it or flow it. By chance if I do flow part of your theory argument , it will not be a major evaluation in the debate and I will probably just ignore it.

General:

Defaults: I default to Drop the Argument, Competing Interps, and Yes RVIS - that can be changed with a word. (However please at least somewhat warrant your paradigm issues). I default to Util and the ROTB is “To vote for the better debater” unless otherwise said in round. Presumption/Permissibility flows neg. If I have to presume on value topics I will flip a coin and whoever wins the coinflip I vote for. If you think there's no offense in the round please make even one presumption warrant, I'll buy it.

General Thoughts on Debate:I think debate is a game and any argument and strategy is on the table as long as it is warranted. I will always be tech > truth. Although I prefer certain norms, nothing is absolute in the debate and if you want to change something about my paradigm - just warrant it.

Speed:Speak as fast as you want, but always send a doc with all your evidence prior to your speech. Slow down on analytics. I was a pretty fast debater so if I can usually follow along.

Substance:You need to extend your arguments in the summary and final focus, but my bar for a sufficient extension is pretty low. I like the debate to focus on clash, so good, intricate weighing is the best way to win my ballot. I loved reading extinction impacts, and my favorite debates was doing smart link weighing in extinction v. extinction debates. You should write your ballot for me, tell me exactly where to vote and why 'X' weighing on 'Y' argument means you specifically win the round. Some thoughts I have about regular substance debates:

• Turns aren't defense, if you want me to vote for one, explain why your link is better than theirs.

• Impact turns/DA's in rebuttal are pretty underutilized and also good, I'll vote for dedev, spark, etc.

• Do not leave anything up for intervention - If you have mitigation on your case but are winning the weighing debate or vice versa, explain in speech why you should be winning the debate as a whole, i.e. why is the mitigation more important or why is the weighing more important.

• I think it's sometimes strategic for teams to concede what they are clearly losing instead of bluffing their way out of it - it makes comparisons between arguments a lot easier and clearly delineates the flow a lot better. No one is falling for your rhetoric so just save it.

Theory:Theory is apriori but I'll vote for X comes first arguments (even substance). I think full text disclosure is good, paraphrasing is bad, and I’m neutral towards open source. I won’t hack for anything, however. The shell needs to be extended in every speech, but don't read the shell word for word (only the interp). Weigh the net benefit against the standards, there's almost no weighing in theory debates and it makes them hard to evaluate. That includes Meta theory: Meta theory comes before theory naturally but there needs to be a basic warrant why in the speech. Friv theory is fine, do what you need to win. I don’t have any preconceived notions nor any ‘higher thresholds’ for any stupid theory arguments - debate is a game so I’ll evaluate it like any other (However simple arguments are easier to understand and naturally require less explanation). Education and Fairness aren't voters until you tell me why. Can be as simple as "only portable skill of debate" or "sways the evaluation of the ballot"

K/K Aff:My thoughts on the K/K Aff. Your K needs a link, impact, an alt, and usually, a Role of the ballot. K affs need an advocacy if they're not advocating for the resolution. If that advocacy isn’t topical, T is a very good strategy against K affs, and I think its true. That doesn’t mean I’m not perceptive to K affs, just that if you hit one, read T. Even if you lose the link, if you win the ROTB you can win the round pretty easily by making a lot of claims about attempting to link into the ROTB or you're the only risk of linking into the ROTB. Explain your jargon-y high theory phil/k arguments, im probably not familiar with it and cross is a good time to explain it since I'll be listening in. I can't vote for what I don't know (but I'm familiar with common K args like cap, security, etc). This includes the nuanced arguments of basic philosophers like Kant (I don’t know what a ‘categorical imperative is.’

Tricks: They're really funny and I love running them. Go ahead and read them. However, Most tricks that deny the resolution on a truth level need a truth testing framework along with them or I won't vote on them. Always send docs and delineate the tricks within the docs, if its a bunch of text in a block I won't flow.

I have about 4 years of policy debate experience with the Bay Area Urban Debate League, and about 3 years now of judging experience

Run what you’re most comfortable with - I’m open to vote on anything as long as it’s proven in round why I should be voting on it (which of course comes with a bit of bias which is outlined down there)

• However, this does mean that you need to stay organized while debating, disorganization will make it a lot harder for me to judge your round

• ALSO disclaimer: I have a full-on hearing loss in my left ear and I’m slightly deaf in my good ear - my hearing is fine and I’m fine with spreading, but disorganization/unclear speaking will make it a lot harder for me to get everything you say down on the flow

Here’s some things I usually look for in rounds:

1. Outline your voters - tell me everything I need to know to vote for you in a round - why you get the vote, why the other team doesn’t, etc. Write the ballot for me in the round as much as you possibly can :)

1. This means develop your arguments - explicitly explain why all your arguments are better than the other side’s proposal

2. Don’t make me connect all the dots post round

2. Fully formed arguments are a big one - With vague alts/advocacies/plans, if I don’t know what I’m voting for, it’s a lot harder to vote on it (be specific!!!)

1. Jargon - It’s great but know how to explain what you actually mean, don't make debate words the full explanation of your argument

3. Impact calc is GREAT, why do you outweigh and why is it necessary that I vote for you?

4. Also, this should be a given, but be kind to one another

1. Don’t be unnecessarily rude

2. NO homophobia, racism, sexism, ableism, or just generally being discriminatory, since that’s a pretty good way to get me to potentially write a ballot against you or at least lower your speaker points as much as I can possibly justify, especially if the other team calls you out (know I will definitely call you out in RFDs post round, regardless of whether or not your opponents do)

My specific feelings on arguments:

Kritiks:

These are great, I love them, I understand a majority, but don’t assume I, or your opponents, will fully understand yours. Make sure it’s well explained and if your alt is incredibly vague, changes, or is not extended throughout the round, I’ll just be sad.

• For K Affs, I don’t have a lot of experience so while I’ll definitely vote for you if it’s done well, make sure to explain well why I should be voting for you and why the discussion that your aff brings up is so important. I like to also hear about how your advocacy holds the potential to actually affect the real world - I care a LOT about education in these types of debates - how do you spill out? what does the ballot mean for you, and everyone in this room and activity?

• Ofc, not doing these things won't mean that I write a ballot against you; however, it might make it a bit harder for me to vote for you if your advocacy is egregiously vague or hard to understand
• TLDR - explain your whole process thoroughly!

T and Framework:

Good Fwk/T arguments are great. However, bad/unreasonable T and FWK usage/abuse is bad for debate - don’t do that. This means don't run like 5 T blocks for no reason - remember to value the education of the actual round as well outside of just the ballot. If you do this, I will just be judgemental from my little desk in the back of the room haha

Please put the whole T shell in the email chain if you can. Also, please give me impacts to your theory, fwk, and T blocks. Theory is cool and all but I won't vote on it if there's not a reason for me to. Impact out your procedural arguments in the round!!! Don't make me connect the pieces for you.

CP:

CPs are fun, tell me why the inevitable perm doesn’t work, and why your CP solves better than the Aff and is competitive. I’m open to Condo but more than like 8 off is pushing it

• Condo note: Be sure to make it absolutely clear what you’re going for, what you're kicking, and signpost as clearly as possible since disorganized condo rounds can become messes and frankly just be extremely difficult to evaluate as a result

DA:

Specific links. Line by line which highlights those specific links. Explanation of why they lead to your impact. Extension of all this through the round. Impact calc.

I am a beginner judge of speech and debate tournaments.

For speech tournaments, the guiding principles that I use to judge participants include the following:

1. Was the speech compelling? Was it well delivered with maturity, poise, and a demonstrated understanding of the topic?
2. Was the logic in the speech sound?
3. How well did the speaker present? Did they use effective gestures and facial queues? Did they speak fluently? Were there nervous ticks or unnecessary adds such as the use of "like" or "just" repeatedly throughout the presentation?

For debate tournaments, I look for the following:

1. Is the logic used in the debate sound? Are there inconsistencies or logic leaps that make the argument difficult or impossible to follow?
2. Did the AF team effectively present a plan that I could understand?
3. Did the Neg team present an alternative or effectively refute the plan presented?
4. Was evidence used effectively?
5. Were ideas communicated in a way that was understandable?
6. Which team made the most compelling arguments/which team was able to respond most effectively to key points of the opponent to make or refute a case?

I do my best to remove any bias based on prior knowledge or a topic and/or presenter characteristics.

Hey guys this is Austin, Joel's son here to tell you a little bit about my dad. He is a LAY judge. NO SPREADING. you will lose if you do this. Don't run medium arguments and use jargon like internal link. It will not work well for you. My dad has been working in cyber for 20 years so he knows stuff about cyber but will listen to evidence.

**Online update: if my camera is off, i am not there**

I think debate is a game with educational benefits. I will listen to anything, but there are obviously some arguments that are more persuasive than others. i think this is most of what you're looking for:

1. arguments - For me to vote on an argument it must have a claim, warrant, and impact. A claim is an assertion of truth or opinion. A warrant is an analytical connection between data/grounds/evidence and your claim. An impact is the implication of that claim for how I should evaluate the debate. debate is competitive and adversarial, not cooperative. My bias is that debate strategies should be evidence-centric and, at a minimum, rooted in an academic discipline. My bias is that I do not want to consider anything prior to the reading of the 1AC when making my decision.

2. more on that last sentence - i am uninterested and incapable of resolving debates based on questions of character based on things that occurred outside of the debate that i am judging. if it is an issue that calls into question the safety of yourself or others in the community, you should bring that issue up directly with the tournament director or relevant authorities because that is not a competition question. if you are having an interpersonal dispute, you should try resolving your conflict outside of a competitive space and may want to seek mediation from trained professionals. there are likely exceptions, but there isnt a way to resolve these things in a debate round.

3. framework - arguments need to be impacted out beyond the word 'fairness' or 'education'. affirmatives do not need to read a plan to win in front of me. however, there should be some connection to the topic. fairness *can be* a terminal impact.

4. critiques - they should have links to the plan or have a coherent story in the context of the advantages. i am less inclined to vote neg for broad criticisms that arent contextualized to the affirmative. a link of omission is not a link. similarly, affirmatives lose debates a lot just because their 2ac is similarly generic and they have no defense of the actual assumptions of the affirmative.

5. counterplans - should likely have solvency advocates but its not a dealbreaker. slow down when explaining tricks in the 2nc.

6. theory - more teams should go for theory more often. negatives should be able to do whatever they want, but affirmatives need to be able to go for theory to keep them honest.

7. topicality - its an evidentiary issue that many people impact poorly. predictable limits, not ground, is the controlling internal link for most T-related impacts. saying 'we lose the [insert argument]' isnt really an impact without an explanation of why that argument is good. good debates make comparative claims between aff/neg opportunities to win relative to fairness.

8. clipping - i sometimes read along with speeches if i think that you are clipping. i will prompt you if i think you are clipping and if i think you are still clipping i will vote against you even if the other team doesnt issue an ethics challenge.

9. 2nr/2ar - there are lots of moving parts in debate. if you disagree with how i approach debate or think about debate differently, you should start your speech with judge instruction that provides an order of operations or helps construct that ballot. teams too often speak in absolute certainties and then presume the other team is winning no degree of offense. that is false and you will win more debates if you can account for that in your speech.

10. keep track of your own time.

unapologetically stolen from brendan bankey's judge philosophy as an addendum because there is no reason to rewrite it:

---"Perm do the counterplan" and "perm do the alt" are claims that are often unaccompanied by warrants. I will not vote for these statements unless the aff explains why they are theoretically legitimate BEFORE the 2AR. I am most likely to vote for these arguments when the aff has 1) a clear model of counterplan/alternative competition AND 2) an explanation for where the

I would prefer that debaters engage arguments instead of finesse their way out of links. This is especially awful when it takes place in clash debates. If you assert your opponent's offense does not apply when it does I will lower your speaker points.

In that vein, it is my bias that if an affirmative team chooses not to say "USFG Should" in the 1AC that they are doing it for competitive reasons. It is, definitionally, self-serving. Self-serving does not mean the aff should lose [or that its bad necessarily], just that they should be more realistic about the function of their 1AC in a competitive activity. If the aff does not say "USFG Should" they are deliberately shifting the point of stasis to other issues that they believe should take priority. It is reciprocal, therefore, for the negative to use any portion of the 1AC as it's jumping off point.

I think that limits, not ground, is the controlling internal link for most T-related impacts. Ground is an expression of the division of affirmative and negative strategies on any given topic. It is rarely an independent impact to T. I hate cross-examination questions about ground. I do not fault teams for being unhelpful to opponents that pose questions in cross-examination using the language of ground. People commonly ask questions about ground to demonstrate to the judge that the aff has not really thought out how their approach to the resolution fosters developed debates. A better, more precise question to ask would be: "What are the win conditions for the negative within your model of competition?"

I have done policy debate, LD and Congress, competing at State (CA) and Nationals when I was in high school.

I am truth over technical putting a premium on understanding your argument and on the logic both teams use to explain why the evidence and the expert is relevant to the argument. Bad evidence loses to good logic and common sense. Good evidence plus logic wins. Stated another way, in making your arguments around impacts, I listen carefully for logical fallacies -- while I won't vote against you if I hear a slippery slope, or a correlation/ causation fallacy, I will keenly listen to see how your opponent responds. I share this because as you develop your speaking skills for life (amazing by the way), your goal will be to persuade whether in business, law, medicine, science or politics -- few things undermine one's credibiilty more than arguments that tend to extremes based on unsubstantiated logical or reasoning errors, so it's good to start to learn and practive now how to build structurally and logical sound arguments, relying on evidence, early in your journey.

Debate is about testing logic and evidence to communicate a Point of View that can be understood and is compelling, so expect me to be a critical judge who will weight what each team tells me about the arguments presented; I vote for the argument I find most persuasive. I will look to frame my assessment against the main stock issues, unless you convince me another standard should be used. Also, if I can't understand the argument, I can't very well score it in your favor.

Beyond my debate experience, my perspective on policy is shaped by being involved in lobbying the Federal Government for Procter and Gamble and time at a leading think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). I worked as a management consult for Booz Allen & Hamilton, where I created business facts and strategies for the Mayo Clinic and NYH Cornell. I have an undergraduate degree in History and a MBA degree, so I feel very comfortable listening to arguments that weight and test the quality of the expert as well as the merits of the evidence; I will even accept your use of common sense or logic to call out logical fallacies, and to sanity test or refute a piece of evidence that just doesn’t make sense.

Finally, effective persuasion includes respectful disagreement, so I will notice rude, sarcastic or condesending behavior and that will detract heavily from the weight I attribute to your argument or position. Please enjoy a spirited discussion and I will do my best to flow and follow.

AFF

I really love and appreciate unique affs. I created tons of affs that tested the limits of topicality and neg generics to actually get the neg to debate about the substance of the affirmative. For example, I think that a lot of teams are scared of losing to topicality and play it way too safe and don't maximize the potential clash and education they gain from writing really intricate affs. I dont have a particular preference to soft impact vs extinction framing affs but 99% of the time I read extinction impacts and I usually default aff on framing when there is no clear winner. More on the framing section

NEG

I loved reading Impact Turns (my favorite was Spark, it was the only thing i read my senior year), I think a lot of teams under-utilize the impact turns that they can use in a round against an aff. They can also pair it with a CP and use it as a net benefit or an add on to a DA. Really cool stuff. I will say that I am more familiar with Disadvantages than Counterplans, but if it competes, solves better and/or has a net benefit over the aff, I'll go there first at the end of a round. I want to see interesting neg rounds, I would always hate to use/see the same 1NC States CP+ Federalism DA. If you gatekeep your best neg prep for out rounds (this is controversial) but I dont think it helps the activity, it incentivizes teams to keep their good prep and eventually only the really good teams that consistently reach out rounds will be the ONLY teams that consistently reach outrounds because other less experienced teams will not have experience answering and dealing with new and challenging neg research. Also do your impact calc, especially in the 2NR. I was a 2N for all of hs and there were times where the 1A would drop the ball on framing and I sold the round by not calling them out for that. Lastly, I dont like topicality, its not that I wouldn't vote for it, I just have my gripes

K

going to be super honest here

I love it I think its super interesting but probably not the best if you have something super complicated or intricate. I read my fair share of Baudrillard and super advanced level Ks, but it was never my main style of debate. Ive read 1-off K's before a couple times, but it was with simple stuff like Cap, Set Col, Eco-Pess, etc.FW makes the game work and if you win FW u win fr (tbh thats how i really debated the K, I didnt really do any clash with the substance of the K)

play it safe and strike me or rank me low if you are primarily a K debater

Framing

I (default to) am a consequentialist utilitarian but can be convinced otherwise. For extinction first framing to win, the team has to establish that their scenario planning solves even a 1% risk of consequences so dire I would be wrong not to vote for them - that is the minimum. I will also be open to impact defense that is applied to framing (i.e "There is 0 risk of nuclear war because XYZ, therefore their framing accomplishes nothing but our epistemology comes first because abc"). However, I can still be convinced that other framing should come first (for example if you can prove that your epistemology/reps is good and comes first because it is able to actually promote change rather than scenario planning then you would win the framing debate.In the end, whatever framing you can prove is more ethical is the framing I will vote for (policy teams can prove ignoring consequences causes more evil, or K teams can prove their epistemology is less racist and more pragmatic)

TLDR:

Present a clear narrative and warrant out your impacts. As a judge I can adapt to you and how you choose to debate but I shouldn't be doing any extra work for you. Your goal is to make writing the ballot for your judges fairly simple with clear reasoning. Please focus on judge instruction it is very important and try your best to make following the round easy.

Tech > Truth - However, it is important to explain why dropped arguments, evidence, etc. are important and why/how I should weigh them in the round.

The easier you make the round to understand and evaluate for your judges the overall better it will be.

Please be clear, some speed is okay but if I am not able to hear it or understand you then I can't flow it.

Specifics-

Topicality:

I think T cards are important, and I will reward good evidence comparison. I don't have a problem voting for T on the neg as long as you make sure to clearly outline your offense and do solid impact calculus.

Kritiks:

I debated in policy for two years with one year mostly going for the K (variations of set col) so I am somewhat familiar. That being said the burden of explanation is on the competitors, you should be able to explain your interpretation and arguments very clearly for your judges as well as your competitors. It is better to over explain and be confident in the clarity of your understanding rather than assuming your judges know what you are trying to say. Your links should be specific to the affs creating direct clash. Overviews are important but good in depth line by line is even more important as well as speech organization, be very specific and signpost. Explicitly answer links, how the perm solves, why extinction o/ws, etc.

K affs:

I do think debate is an educational game that is valuable. I am open to competitors being creative but it is all about how you explain it. How you answer framework can be very important, make sure to be clear on what your impact turn to the topic is and why that matters. Explain your interpretation clearly and why it should be preferred, do good comparison and analysis.

DAs/CPs:

Impact calculus and good links are very important. Turn case arguments are good but again just make sure you are clear in explaining why any of that matters. I am not really familiar with this years topic nor am I up to date on everything so please be clear and straightforward in your explanation. Don't just rely on your evidence or tell your judges to refer to them without explaining why your evidence matters and why it should be preferred. For CPs be very specific on how you solve better with examples/scenarios. Pointing out flaws in the affs solvency mechanism is good but explain why that means you solve better.

Theory:

I am not familiar with a lot of theory arguments, but I can vote on it as long as you make sure to explain why/how I should weigh it and why in the round this matters.

I am a parent judge and judging for past two and half year.

I prefer if both teams would reference their evidence and make their arguments concise and easy to understand.

I look for consistency in the arguments throughout the debate

Judgement is limited only to the arguments presented and contested in the debate

I am generally pretty open to vote on anything if you tell me to, I do my best to minimize judge intervention and base my decisions heavily on the flow. I love judge instruction. I err tech over truth.

However, everyone has biases so here are mine.

General - Removing analytics is coward behavior. Okay, after I put this in everyone seems to think I mean I need to see all your analytics ever. I’m saying if you have prewritten analytics you should not remove those (coward behavior) especially in the early constructive speeches. Removing analytics and trying to get dropped args from spreading poorly is bad for debate and if it’s not on my flow it didn’t happen. Analytics off the dome from your flow are great and not what I’m talking about. I'm fine with tag team / open cross-x unless you're going to use it to completely dominate your partners CX time. I'll dock speaker points if you don't let your partner talk / interrupt them a bunch. Respect each other. I'm good with spreading but you need to enunciate words. If you mumble spread or stop speaking a human language I'll lower your speaker points. Please signpost theory shells. I will evaluate your evidence quality if it is challenged or competing evidence effects the decision, but generally I think if a judge is pouring through your warrants thats probably not a good sign, you should have been extending those yourself I shouldn't have to hunt them down. Don’t cheat, don’t do clipping, don’t be rude. Obviously don’t be racist, sexist, homophobic, etc, in life in general but also definitely not in front of me. This is a competitive and adversarial activity but it should also be fun. Don’t try to make others miserable on purpose.

Topicality/Theory - Hiding stuff in the T shell is bad and I'll probably disregard it if Aff tells me to. Good T and theory debates need voters/impacts, which a lot of people seem to have forgotten about. I think for theory to be compelling in round abuse is supreme. If you're complaining you had no time to prep and then have 15 hyper specific link cards....come on. Disclosure theory is basically never viable independent offense but I think it can be a strong argument to disregard theory arguments run against you since they refused disclosure norms.

Framework - I'll follow the framework I'm given but I prefer a framework that ensures equitable clash. Clash is the heart and soul of this activity.

Kritiks - You need to understand what you are advocating for. If you just keep repeating the words of your tags without contextualizing or explaining anything, you don't understand your Kritik. I prefer to weigh the K impacts against the aff plan but I can be convinced otherwise. My threshold is high and it’s easier to access if you can prove in round abuse / actually tailored links. Also, I don't think links on K's always need to be hyper specific but I do not want links of omission. I like fiat debates. I think a lot of kritiks are very vulnerable to vagueness procedurals.

K-Affs - Good K-Affs are amazing, but I almost never see them. I used to say I tend to err neg but I actually end up voting aff more often than not mostly because negs don’t seem to know how to engage. Vagueness seems to be most egregious with k affs. Don’t be vague about what you’re trying to do or what my vote does and you’ll have a much better chance with me. I like debate, which is why I am here, so if your whole argument is debate bad you'll have an uphill battle unless you have a specific positive change I can get behind. Just because I like debate doesn’t mean it can’t also be better. I can recognize its problematic elements too. Reject the topic ain't it. I need to know what my ballot will functionally do under your framework. If you can't articulate what your advocacy does I can't vote for it. I think fairness can be a terminal impact. Negs should try to engage the 1AC, not even trying is lazy. Really listen to what the K aff is saying because often you can catch them contradicting themselves in their own 1AC, or even providing offense for perf cons.

CPs - I'll judge kick unless Aff tells me not to and why. Justify your perm, don’t just say it. You need to explain it not just yell the word perm at me 5 times in a row. I tend to be fine with Condo unless there’s clear abuse. I think I start being open to condo bad around 3 or 4? But if you want me to vote on condo you better GO for it. 15 seconds is not enough. I think fiat theory arguments are good offense against many CPs. Consult, condition or delay CP's without a really good and case specific warrant are lame and I lean aff on theory there. Advantage CPs rule, but more than 5 planks is crazy. By advantage CPs I mean like...actually thought out a targeted ones that exploit weaknesses in plans.

DAs - I evaluate based on risk and impact calc. More than 3 cards in the block saying the same thing is too many. Quality over quantity.

For LD - I try to be as tab as I can but in order to do that you need to give me some kind of weighing mechanism to determine whose voting issues I prefer. If you both just list some voting issues with absolutely no clash it forces me to make arbitrary decisions and I hate that. Give me the mechanism / reason to prefer and you'll probably win if your opponent does not. So like, do I prefer for evidence quality or relevance? Probability? Give me something. I'm probably more open to prog arguments because I come from policy debate but if someone runs a Kritik and you do a decent job on kritiks bad in LD theory against it I'll vote on that.

General Notes

Don't be a bigot. This includes misgendering competitors. You will lose the ballot.

I generally give relatively high speaks due to the subjective nature of speaker points and the issues therein.

Remember to time yourselves and your opponents.

In all forms of debate, I value logical argumentation and strong analytics supported by credible evidence. Speed, if clear, is fine, as long as it remains at a level that works for all debaters in the round. Out-spreading an opponent kills education.

"Off-Time Roadmaps"

Stop. If you signpost and are clear throughout your speeches, I will not need a "brief," off-time roadmap.

If I am flowing DAs, CPs, Ks, Advantages on separate pages, just give me the order (e.g., "The order is Case, DA, CP").

Policy (and Policy-Style Parli)

I am open to theory arguments and will rarely vote on T , but you need to explain them clearly and thoroughly in the round. I studied critical theory as applied to literature in both undergraduate and graduate school, so I have a strong background in feminist, Marxist, deconstructionist, queer, and psychoanalytic theory. I enjoy a well-executed K, but only run kritiks you know well -- not something you grabbed off the wiki/open ev.

I strive to evaluate the round using the framework agreed upon by the debaters and do not have a particular preference regarding stock issues, policy maker, etc.

LD

Support and bring everything back to your V/VC -- even if you're running a plan (for non-CA LD). Evidence certainly matters but evidence without analytics will do very little for you.

PF

I'll accept theory arguments when necessary to address in-round abuse, but please proceed with caution. I still value Public Forum as a form of debate that can be understood by lay judges, so please don't spread or run a K, and keep the jargon to a minimum.

Speech

In extemp, I want to see your introduction connect clearly with the topic and the rest of the speech (bring it back briefly at the end). Please clearly sign-post your main points and cite your evidence (ideally with more than just "According to the New York Times this year..."). Don't be afraid to use humor -- even if it's a little dark. Most of all, be authentic, engaging, and keep things flowing.

I will give time signals in extemp and impromptu.

In original oratory, original advocacy, & informative speaking, I look for well-crafted speeches delivered with fluency and appropriately varied tones.

If you're competing in an interp event, your intro should make me care about the topic at hand and should, of course, be your original words. Also, if you're competing in oratorical interpretation and the original speech includes cursing, please say the actual words or select a different speech (e.g., AOC's 2020 address to Rep. Yoho in which she quotes his profanity).

I am a lay judge but I have 8 years experience judging League debates.

General Stuff:

Just speak at conversational pace and tone and use all your time.

Only go for topicality if its a glaring violation

Try to avoid using terminology-heavy debates.

If aff, focus on defending your policies and answer all of the negs points effectively and clearly

If neg, focus on finding gaps in the policy proposal and carry only the most contested and strongest negative stock issues into the 2NR.

Cross ex is the most important focus area for me in the debate.This is the only part of debate where neg/aff actively clash with each other. I look for teams to use the that time effectively.Don't cut off responses, unless they are stretching the time limit.

Don't give up in round, I keep an open mind throughout the debate, even the last speech.

Parent judge. Speak slowly and explain arguments simply and clearly.

This is my 2nd year judging. I am comfortable with both slow (lay) debate and medium fast debate. I understand different affirmative advantages as well as disadvantages, counter plans and topicality. I do not know how to judge theory or kritiks and I am unfamiliar with them in general. I like it when teams are clear and tell me for what to vote on.

A majority of my debates have been one off/K Affs so do with that what you will. Im a sucker for a good Security/Cap/Settler Colonialism Kritik. However, this does not mean I wont vote for a policy argument. I love debate and do not have a predisposition towards particular styles. At the end of the day my rfd is a referendum on who debated better. That being said, do not try and over-correct for me. I think debate is a space for you to pursue whatever you want (as long as it’s not overtly violent like racism/sexism/discrimination good).

Don’t bomb through analytics its annoying to flow and you will lose speaks. The less you act like a jerk the better. Theres a time and place for everything.

Rebuttals are often the most frustrating part of debate. This is when people have to get off the blocks and start thinking big picture. I like debaters who write their ballot for me in the 2NR/2AR. More judge instruction will not only get you better speaker points but dramatically increase your chances of winning. Im more than likely not going to vote on ticky tacky arguments, but who has a better big picture analysis for why they’ve won the debate and can flush out the benefits to granting them a ballot. In close debates, impact calc goes a long way. I will read evidence at the end of the round, but that is not an excuse for lazy debating.

I am a former high school debater and have not been involved much with debate since then. I will recall jargon, but have no familiarity with the topic, and am much more comfortable with slow/medium rounds.

Speed: I am more comfortable with slow rounds, but will judge a fast round if both teams are comfortable.

Case: If you frame it appropriately, it is possible to win with just case.

T: I can be swayed by compelling and logical topicality arguments.

DA: Please contextualize your DA to the aff appropriately.

CP: I will default to judge-kicking.

K: I don't have a strong background in Ks, but will do my best to follow a debate if it comes to me. Just know that I might not be the most educated judge for such debates.

--TLDR--

You do you, anything and I mean anything goes, tech over truth, if you can debate/explain it I'll vote on it.

Judge Instruction: Can't emphasize its importance enough, good judge instruction in the 2ar/2nr will always be rewarded with high speaks and likely the ballot. Write the ballot for me.

I read the K my whole high school career and am reading it in college if that matters to you

--Specifics--

Ks - love them. I’ve gone for arguments ranging from set col to Bataille. Strong link debating with a cohesive strategy and good judge framing will take you a long way. I love examples. Please don’t just read your blocks. I am a huge sucker for unique and specific examples on the link and ontology debate. If you’re giving the same 2nr vs 3 different affs something should change.

Policy Affs vs Ks- I’m persuaded by the more “generic” arguments people make vs the k. Specifically heg good, fairness/clash on FW, ontology/psychoanalysis wrong, extinction o/w’s etc. Policy teams often have excellent cards on these arguments but struggle to utilize them past the 2ac, make the neg teams life hard.

K affs- love them. I probably have a higher threshold for teams saying that t in of itself is violent. That’s not to say I won’t vote on it if explained well. If you want my ballot all you need is a strong impact turn to the topic/their model of debate and that you either preserve some form of debate through the counter interp or have a substantive reason for why debate is bad. Honestly, when it's done correctly I think the counter interp is a pretty good argument, it is defensive but having some semblance of what debates look like under your model can soak up a lot of the limits stuff teams go for.

Neg vs K affs- my 2nr's vs k affs have almost exclusively been going for t. Go for fairness. That being said, I’ve been in my fair share of k v k rounds mostly reading the cap k, Afro pess, or set col vs teams. Neg terror is good, spam those off and dare them to go for condo lol.

DA’s/CP’s- I read my fair share of DA’s and CP’s at NSDA Nationals and State but my experience with them ends there. For reference, those rounds were at about half the speed of a normal circuit round. I’m probably not the best for super high-level rounds. This is not to dissuade you from reading these arguments in front of me, it’s to be transparent and let you know that you might need to over-explain some things for me to keep up. For counterplans I’m working on understanding competition better but as of now, I’m going to be lost.

Theory- Most of these debates are a wash and annoying to judge but if you explain it I'll vote on it

--Misc.--

At the end of the day debate is a game like no other and I want you to have fun. Cracking a joke or two will probably get you higher speaks. Treat others how you wanna be treated and let’s make this a positive and educational environment.

I want to preface that I have a learning disorder. As someone in the midst of comprehending what I couldn't before diagnosis & treatment, I'm able to flow, but I will have a tough time keeping up.

Speech (debaters ignore)

TL;DR: Good blocking, good piece synergy = W

I used to compete in Dramatic Interpretation and limited prep (NX). I was okay, but I'm familiar with what clean, well-rehearsed blocking looks like. I believe that what place you're given in the round should not be entirely determined by the cutting of your piece, as students may not have total control over how their script is cut. That being said, this may not totally apply by outrounds, and regardless you control the timings of your performance. Emergence is powerful, and powerful speeches emerge when you can read the room and know how to navigate those 10 minutes.

I haven't competed or judged a speech round in a while, so I may not be familiar with any change in rules or what is in vogue (i.e., specific styles of popping w/ interp or whatever). I'll go by the NSDA rules. If any external interruptions do stop your speech, it won't determine your placement in the round.

If asked, I will give time signals.

Debate

O/V (I love overviews, use them)

TL;DR of the TL;DR: I have terrible working memory because of ADHD. It's in your favor to do anything that helps me understand the topography of the debate.

• If you're referencing/cross-applying cards, I recommend you reiterate the warrant and remind me what speech it came from.
• Err on the side of caution when using jargon; I'll ask you to explain what it means if necessary, but gauge what you can from this paradigm (edit: I finally understand thumpers :O).
• I lean truth because the prereqs to being tech are the capacity to flow well + being competent at impact calc.
• Spreading is fine with me; Signposting & summarizing can make or break whether I can follow. Pause after reading a card, and slow down when saying the tagline/author name.
• Feed me judge instruction!!! Tell me how to weigh, how to frame the round, and HOW TO VOTE!

Spreading/Flow

TL;DR: Give me some buffer time and pause when reading analytics/tags. Signpost! :)

I'm cool with spreading, but:

• Please do proper line-by-line, and after your speech, send out a marked doc with cards in the order you read them.
• Inevitably, I'll miss a thing or two. I'll yell "clear" if I need you to slow down. I won't dock speaks (unless you ignore my warning entirely), but I expect you to slow down and signpost.
• A simple pause does wonders. Thoroughly explain your syllogisms, pace your speeches, and you will be rewarded!
• Don't spread analytics as fast as you would a card. I’d also like you to send analytics over.
  
• If you're up against an inexperienced/novice team, pub-stomping via speed or theory is not the move. Your speaks and potentially the round will reflect this.
• I flow cross to read in between the lines. As I mentioned earlier, I'm a lay judge, and my schema for debate isn't up to par with your more experienced circuit K hack.

Meta-Debate

Truth/Tech

TL;DR: I will objectively retain more salient, intuitive arguments, but I'll try to override this.

I want to emphasize that clear link chains and impacts matter. Articulate, clarify, and make understanding your warrants easier so I can get a better read on where the debate's headed. That said, I attempt to be tech but end up erring truth in-round**.

• This article best explicates my thought process on judge impartiality. "To all truth judges I ask you to consider this: Is my decision based on a specific articulation of a clearly marked argument made by a debater, or am I drawing information and inferences from my own knowledge?"

Theory / F/W

TL;DR: No, I'm not going to TL;DR theory, read below :)

I think I enjoy it? Here's what I can say.

• If possible, weigh between links to fairness & education. I'm more convinced that fairness is an internal link & not an impact, but that doesn't necessarily delineate it as bad/less preferable than an impact (nuclear war can be an internal link to anything).
• AFAIK, condo is bad because of double turns, but it's devious when done well & I enjoy it for its strategic value. As with all things, be chill & don't hard abuse if you plan on running it (i.e., I'll probably buy condo bad if you run over 3 CPs, but otherwise, it's fair game)
• I like procedural arguments in general because they're easier to follow!

Defaults?

• The essentials of a default: - Condition opponents by repeating core parts of an opening - Opening looks the same, but different plays are possible - Obscure your intentions through info denial - Gather information - Maximise utility efficiency - Take map control.
• My personal favorites on Ascent:
  A default w/ Killjoy turret covering bottom mid will force certain moves, i.e. on Ascent, = no cross into pizza & arches, & spawn jump peek (agent info)
  Smoke on catwalk denies tiles peek, forces mid presence or util trade. You can play for these timings. I love minmaxxing any bottom mid-control.

ok seriously though

• counter-interps unless persuaded to evaluate under reasonability. Define reasonability for me!
• presumption flows neg (more critically, it flowing to less change)

Ks

I'm cool with Ks, but I require an explanation/a short thesis on what you're running if it's super niche.

my brain if you read Baudrillard (i am familiar with his lit base go crazy ahhh)

• Please establish the solvency mechanism for your K. +1 if it's topical, but by all means, go wild if you're feeling it.

• Somewhat high? threshold for K Affs. Don't let this stop you, though!

Etc.

TL;DR: Crystallize and tell me what is terminal. Make it easy for me to flow.

• Conceding/dropping arguments makes it easier to follow on flow, which is 1000% to your advantage. Rehashing a card dropped/lost during clash does not. This kind of rhetoric makes following along harder and may implicitly influence my ballot, which you don't want.

• I plead that you write my ballot by the 2AR/2NR & from what you've collapsed(and do collapse), give me a big-picture overview.

• I will not keep time; I expect the debaters to do that. I'm usually chill on this, but I'll drop an auto-loss for any clear abuse.

**note: As to why I lean truth, I believe this to be an unintentional byproduct of my disability. The cognitive load of weighing can be intrinsically complex for me (I speak impact algebra, not impact calculus), so just know that how you weigh may not supersede how you clash or how intuitive your argument is.
