~~~MY PARADIGM~~~

My philosophy is that you all put a lot of effort into this activity, and it's my onus to adjudicate every round thoroughly. If you feel like I'm failing to do this in any way, pls call me out.

TL;DR: If I'm being real, I overwhelmingly and shamelessly vote off of the warrant debate. If you're winning the reasons that something will/won't happen (which means you're extending them specifically, and are being responsive to your opponents' answers) then you're almost certainly winning my ballot. All things equal, I will vote for a team with a clear warrant over a team with a warrantless impact card. Please do not hesitate to go straight for the warrant-level and spend your time there; I will gladly track internal links.

Additionally, please read your citations as clearly as possible.

General Stuff worth noting:

1) I haven't done prep on this topic, so don't assume I'm already familiar with your evidence/arguments.

2) I'm fine with jargon, but don't exclude your opponents. I'm fine with swearing, but don't insult your opponents.

3) Be comfortable. I don't care about your attire/formality.

4) Speed: I don't mind, but please slow down for taglines. Slow down if your opponents tell you to. If you simply cannot resist going into x-games mode, give your opponents a copy of your speech beforehand.

5) I pay attention to crossfire, but I don't flow it; if something important happened, mention it in your speech if you want me to vote on it.

6) Framework is always the first thing I evaluate on my ballot. I vote for the team that wins under the winning framework. If only one team discusses/extends framework, that's what I default to. If there's no framework in the round, I default to generic cost/benefit.

Theory:

I debated in college, and am fine with theory. There are issues with PF that I wouldn't mind seeing addressed. If you're reading theory in front of me, it needs some structure, but mostly I just need a Role of the Ballot so I have an understanding of what you want me to do. YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN IT TO YOUR OPPONENTS, TOO. I'm significantly less likely to vote on potential/theoretical abuse than on in-round/demonstrated abuse. I also retain the right to intervene, somewhat, on questions of theory - especially ones that involve me as a judge - in a way that I don't for post-fiat args.

As a progressive judge, I will approach the round with an open mind and a willingness to consider all arguments presented. I have 4 years experience in public forum debate and am comfortable with theory, kritiks, and shells in LD. However, my ultimate goal is to evaluate the round based on the soundness of the arguments presented. I will be looking for clear and well-supported claims, logical reasoning, and effective refutation of opposing arguments.

I am also comfortable with spreading, but if a debater chooses to spread, I ask that they flash their case to me for accessibility purposes. If your opponent is not comfortable with spreading don't . Be nice to one another. I like a good fair debate.

In terms of evaluating arguments, I will prioritize arguments that are well-supported. That being said, I welcome arguments that are new, exciting, and critical. I will also take into consideration the debaters' conduct and the overall structure of the round when making my decision.

At the end of the day, I want to see a FAIR debate.

Inclusivity and anti-oppression

Debate excludes and marginalizes many groups of people. When we participate in this activity, we should try to make it as inclusive and just as possible. We should check our internal biases when interacting with teammates, competitors, judges, observers, and anyone else in the debate space. Be mindful of the real-world impact your arguments may have and be careful not to use marginalized people as tools to win ballots. Obviously, none of us should tolerate any kind of bigotry.

Weighing is key; probability is not weighing

Weighing is the easiest way to win debates so start weighing early, bring it up often, and develop it throughout the round. Don't just make arguments; explain why, even if your opponent's arguments have some merit, your arguments matter more.

Weighing mechanisms like "probability, strength of link, or risk of impact" assume that your opponent's arguments aren't true, placing the burden on you to disprove their arguments and defeating the strategic value of weighing. Don't make me vote on probability weighing because you may not be pleased with the outcome.

Disclosure is good

I believe that Public Forum teams should disclose. I will not penalize teams that don't disclose, but I will reward teams that do with a 1 point speaker boost – just let me know your that stuff is on the wiki before the round starts. "Truth"/tech

I believe that flows are very useful ways to track what is going on in the debate, and I also want to be persuaded. I'll try my best to be open-minded, and I acknowledge that I enter the round with my own experiences and views.

The second rebuttal should include frontlining

Not mandatory, just a preference, so don't worry if you don't get to it. The more times you make an argument, the more likely it is to persuade me.

The summaries must extend defense

If you want defense in final focus, you must extend that through summary. Three minutes is enough time for summary speakers to extend defense.

Progressive arguments, critical arguments, and theory must be accessible

Go for it! Your arguments must be accessible to everyone in the round (opponents, me/other judges, spectators). Please watch the speed and jargon.

While I have many years of experience as a teacher, I have very limited experience as a debate judge. Therefore, I would prefer that the speaking speed be moderate, words clearly enunciated, and arguments laid out concisely.

A resolution should be stated at the beginning of the debate, all important terms defined, and data/stats are put into context.

Stuff

• Be nice. I don't come to judge and take time from my weekend to watch someone making nasty comments or hurting someone's feelings just because he/she thought it would be "funny." 
• Super policy oriented. I prefer disads + case debates and CP + DA debates. They're super fun and love those 2nrs. This by no means says that you're restricted to go for them in the 2nr. I'm down to hear 2nrs in Ks or whatever you think is bes to win. 
• Tech over truth, no exception. Reading poor, ridiculous arguments like racism good, patriarchy good, suicide good, etc. will reflect in low speaks.
• Cross Ex. I will flow this and will reward good performances in higher speaks. I think cross ex can be extremely strategic in debate and a really good time to display ethos. Don’t waste it.
• Evidence. A claim should have sufficient warranting for me to consider it a piece of viable evidence. If I call up a card after the round and see that the card doesn’t really support the claim you’re making, I’m not willing to give you credit.
• Email chains. Put me on them.
• Clarity. I'll yell clear 3 times max in a speech. I can't be flowing anything if I don't understand what you're saying. 
• Condo: 1-2: great. 3: uphill battle for the neg. 3+: nope. 
• Prep. I don't consider it prep for flashing unless it's more than 30 seconds. Then, the timer starts.
• Don't expect me to be taking track of your speech or prep. 

Aff

• I think that all affs should defend the USFG. I absolutely love topical policy affs and am fine with soft left affs that defend the state.  
• I really, really don't like K affs. I’m easily persuaded by framework against non-traditional affs.

DA:

• Love them especially specific turns case arguments
• Impact Calc is super important. Slowing down and actually doing impact comparisons is what I’m looking for.

CP:

• More neg leaning in terms of competition.
• Should have a solvency advocate. 
• Conditional Multiplank CPs are a no-no.

T:

• Should probably be able to provide a caselist when asked.
• Not really a fan of T QPQ.

K:

• I’m familiar with Security, Neolib/Cap, Heidegger, and other popular Kritiks.
• I prefer there be specific links to the aff instead of just a general link. Have them somewhere in the neg block.
• Alt explanations are super important to me. If you’re aff I encourage you to find holes in that.

If you want me to vote on an argument, it has to be in summary and final focus.

I appreciate world comparisons, weighing, and logically explained arguments.

I do not like speed. I will not flow your arguments if I do not understand what you are saying.

I will decide your speaks based on the clarity and content of your speech.

***Before you start your speech tell me which side of the flow you are starting on, and sign post clearly as you go along.

I am writing this paradigm against my will because I don't think there should be paradigms in public forum debate! If you follow the rules and convince me, you will win the round. That said:

- Speed is fine, but if I look like I'm struggling to keep up or understand, slow down.

- I'm bad at getting down author names. Extend the institution name if possible (e.g. NY Times, not Smith).

- If you want me to vote on something, it should be in summary. That said, you don't need too much terminal defense in summary (but I would like to see some acknowledgment of your opponent's case).

- I prefer line by line, but obviously connect ideas, generate clash, address framework, etc.

- Second speaking team doesn't have to cover front lines in rebuttal, but it's nice if you do.

- Repeat crossfire points in speeches if you want them to be considered.

- WARRANT YOUR ARGUMENTS! Absolutely the most important thing. A good life skill too. Why does what you're saying make sense?

- Flesh things out for me! I don't want to intervene with my own thoughts/ideas, so if there's anything you want in my brain (even if its obvious, or even if you just want to express some healthy skepticism on a claim) say it out loud!

- Be funny but not mean :)

I debated policy/cross-ex debate at Glenbrook South in High school (class of '14) and Wake Forest in College (class of '18). I made mostly traditional policy arguments for the first 7 years of my career, until my senior year at Wake when my style opened up a bit and I ventured into the world of K things (Thanks to Varun Reddy). That said, I'll vote on any argument that wins the debate. I try not to be ideological, but everyone inevitably is.

Y'all should know: I haven't been around debate much since I graduated Wake in 2018. That means I do not know what your topic is. This matters for how you explain things like T. Presume I know nothing, because I don't know anything. If you wanted to write the resolution on the board to help me out a little bit, I would not be upset.

I flow on paper. This means you know I'm not trolling around looking at memes, but it also means you know I'm not writing down every single word. Have convenient taglines for your arguments. Package things well. LBL is a lost art. Massive overviews are ruinous.

FW -- I think this argument is strongest on the negative when read as a movements disad, but no one seems to agree with me on this (except for the folks who debated with me ;)). If you INSIST on going for this as a procedural fairness argument, I need you to know: in my eyes, nothing about not being topical is PER SE procedurally unfair. You can't just read definitions, cry fairness, then explain why fairness comes first. I need you to flesh out what we used to call the "internal link" between your definitions and the concept of fairness. WHY is what they did unfair? Do they have a counterinterp that makes debate bad? Do they not have a counterinterp at all? Is your interp the only fair one? Tell me why. That's all I'm saying.

1. Debaters have a debilitating tendency to fail to see the forest for the trees. Most debates can be resolved by 1 central issue, define that issue and tell me why you are winning on that question.

2. I am tabula rasa- I have a read a drilling aff, a Moby Dick aff, an Asian Identity aff, an encryption aff, went for Baudrillard ALOT, etc. In other words, do what you want!

3. The best way to win a K in front of me is to spend a lot ton of time on the link debate and give each link an impact and/or turns case args. Pull lines from the 1AC, go into their internal links or the structuring logic of the aff- don't just read your generic heg links to the K blocks.

4. Your final speech should always begin and end with the exact reason you think I should vote for you.

5. Nuance is always strategic and appreciated.

6. Im not the best for techy T and theory debates but I can most def handle it.

7. CrossX is a speech and it is super important.

8. After some personal experiences I have come to believe that death good arguments pose a serious real life threat to the mental health of high school debaters. If you read these arguments and the other team makes the argument that death good is detrimental to the community, I am very likely to vote on the argument. However, that does not mean that you shouldn't read arguments like fear of death bad in front of me.
