Though I've been a PF middle school coach for four years, I consider myself a novice/lay-type judge. I do flow so I appreciate clear signposts, warrants and unique and impactful evidence. I am very much interested to see speakers attempt or execute innovation in form and style using humor, pathos and engaging impacts. I believe speakers who believe what they're arguing. I frown upon speaker dispositions that are communicated in a seemingly unfriendly, impatient or unkind manner.

Hi - I've judged several tournaments over the last year and I love hearing different points of view.

First -- make sure I can understand you. If you go fast and mumble, I won't hear your points and will have a hard time following your arguments. Ideally, enumerate your points so I can follow them and keep track of them throughout the argument. If you go fast, make sure I can get your points! Otherwise, focus on what's most important and share that with me.

Second -- use your time! If you have 4 minutes, make the most of it.

Third -- Cite your sources. It is important that you do this so I can compare evidence. Then tell me why those points are important.

Fourth -- (but probably most important) Be respectful. Good sportsmanship and being kind is important to me. If you insult or talk down to the other team, I will not be impressed.

Lastly, listen to the other team.

I am an experienced varsity-level debater currently competing in PF for Staten Island Technical High School.

Generally, I am open to all arguments but weigh heavily on use of relevant evidence. I should be able to understand your arguments without prior knowledge of the topic. Speed is not a factor in my determinations, but enunciation is key - if I can't understand you, it isn't on my flow. If it's not on my flow, I'm not judging you on it. I appreciate speeches that are well-constructed and clearly define framework/weighing. Calling cards is permissible as per league rules, but do not spend the entire debate arguing sources.

Bring through your argument to your final focus, otherwise I will consider it dropped and will not consider it towards your overall argument, even if th opponent never addresses it.

Here are some pointers to take into account when I judge a round of PF:

• Weighing is a MUST --> must be comparative
• Strengthen links WHILE de-linking your opponents points
• If you bring up a framework, carry it throughout ALL of your speeches
• I do allow off-time roadmaps
• Try not to be TOO repetitive --> I take note of as much as I can so if I catch a strong point, I will take that into account so there isn't a need to spend too much time going over the same point
• Make sure to refute directly --> In other words, try not to beat around the bush
• If you can, I strongly encourage you to front line, although I understand it may be difficult for Pro teams
• Logic AND Evidence

I understand that this may be a LOT to do in a round but try to do as many as possible. In addition, I will usually be judging based off of how well you did for the division you are in.

Obviously don’t read anything racist, sexist, homophobic, etc.

I love ks but if you can't explain/don't understand your k, I probably won't want to vote for you, especially if your opponent points it out.

T is really fun. If you go for t in the 2nr make sure you kick the rest of your args and go on t and only t.

CPs and DAs are also cool

Random things:

CX is binding, but for something your opponents said to be put on the flow, say it in your speech. Open cx is fine.

Spreading is fine but please slow down for card titles/authors, analytics, and rebuttal speeches.

I try to avoid judge intervention, but I will throw out any completely new arguments made in the 2ar.

Write my ballot for me in the 2nr/2ar, and make sure to fully extend things throughout the round

I am a long time debate coach from ACORN Community High School in Brooklyn and now principal at MS 50 also in Brooklyn.

I will vote for any argument, as long as it is explained well. I am very open to critical arguments and performance.

I am not impressed with speed and don't love it being used as a spreading strategy. I prefer thoughtful, well researched and well explained arguments.

Please be respectful to opponents at all times. Hateful, racist, homophobic, sexist, or ableist language will result in loss of ballot.

I have done debate for four years, one in parliamentary and three in public forum. Here's how I decide on a ballot.

Weighing

- show me what you think you won on and/or how your opponents failed to get their point across

- if neither side weighs, i'll do it myself but it may not go well on either side

Impacts

- If the weighing does not help me decide on a ballot, the impacts made on both sides

- moral/progressives are fine as long as you can properly build the proper link chains

My name is Sameeha Saleem. I’m a student judge. I’ve been doing debates in many different formats but specifically, I did public forum debates for two years during middle school.

Important things to consider:

• get to the round as soon as you can

• Be respectful and considerate of your fellow debaters (no discriminatory remarks)

• Before starting, please tell me your name, what speaker you are, and your pronouns

• try to be as clear as possible

• Everyone has their own speeds of speaking and understanding so try to speak at a reasonable speed

•  Will always keep time, but just as a recommendation debaters should also keep time.

• Cards might be called if felt that they are necessary. 

• Always state where you got your evidence for.

• Try to weigh in your summaries and definitely in your final focuses.

• I won't count anything that happens during crossfires unless someone brings it up in their speech. 

• No new points should be brought up during the summary or final focus. 

• Verbal feedback will be given if asked, as well as written feedback on tabroom

Again, I love K's but I'm not expecting them. If you're going to read one please be sure you actually know what you're talking about and be able to defend what you say, that goes for everything but especially K's in my opinion.

CP's and DA's are cool, I will for sure vote on them.

I'm not a crazy big fan of T and I personally don't enjoy running it, but I do try to stay unbiased, so I will vote on it because it is a theory argument, just make sure you can really explain it.

I'm chill with open CX, and I do believe CX is binding so feel free to bring it up in your speeches.

Spreading is fine, in fact, I love spreading, just slow down for card tags, authors, and analytics.

Don't bring up new arguments in the 2AR and don't try to give 3NR's. Also, if your opponent drops an argument, make sure to capitalize on it, and on that note; don't drop arguments your opponents make or arguments you plan on going for.

Pro tip: The 2NR and 2AR are the speeches where you should write my ballot for me. Tell me exactly what you want me to vote for you on and explain and defend it. My RFD should look like your 2NR or 2AR.

If you're winning the debate by a wide margin and concede 30 seconds or more in the 2NR or 2AR, I'll massively boost your speaks.

I am a sophmore in High School and I have debated in several tournaments over the last two years. I am very excited to be judging. Here are some of my most important stances in the debate world.

1), Be clear and confident when you're speaking. It helps on my side when I can understand what you are saying as I can properly flow the round.

2), Use your time. You are give a set amount of time for your speeches. Use it. You will be able to fit more arguments in and possibly add more arguments into the debate.

3), Cite your sources! It helps me flow and compare evidence.

4), Please be respectful. I will not tolerate inappropriate or offensive language, and it will make me and the opposing team disappointed. I believe that all debates should be fair with each team treating their opponents with kindness and respect.
