Hi - I've judged several tournaments over the last year and I love hearing different points of view.
First -- make sure I can understand you. If you go fast and mumble, I won't hear your points and will have a hard time following your arguments. Ideally, enumerate your points so I can follow them and keep track of them throughout the argument. If you go fast, make sure I can get your points! Otherwise, focus on what's most important and share that with me.
Second -- use your time! If you have 4 minutes, make the most of it.
Third -- Cite your sources. It is important that you do this so I can compare evidence. Then tell me why those points are important.
Fourth -- (but probably most important) Be respectful. Good sportsmanship and being kind is important to me. If you insult or talk down to the other team, I will not be impressed.
Lastly, listen to the other team.
Good luck!

Hi!! I am a high school congress debater but I do know how Public Forum works.
I prefer for your cameras to be on, but tech difficulties are understandable.
I will judging off of the flow but won't be flowing cross, so mention those points later.
Signpost please!! Off-time roadmaps aren't needed, but if you really want to, warn me and keep it short and sweet.
Make sure to not bring up new points in summary/final focus. WEIGHING!!! Make me care about why your arg is more important than the other team.
Explain your points thoroughly and explain to me WHY your card proves your point, analysis is important of course.
Speaking of cards, have reputable, reliable sources.
Good speaks are given to debaters who articulate their points well and who respect their fellow debaters, this is a safe space.
If u mention SZA +0.5 speaks, lol.
Speaking clearly > Spreading, quality is always over quantity.
Be fun! I want you to have fun while debating!

Current HS public forum debater and ex parli debater
Tech>truth. If you tell me an argument is illogical tell me why (if you just say "this is false" I won't flow it) I don't follow the cards, just the numbers, so it your refering to a stat tell me the stat.
PLEASE SIGNPOST.
Weighing. Most important part of my ballot. If you don't do it (especially summary) your impacts won't be considered in my desicion (just saying the mechanism is not weighing).
Extend all arguments to FF or I will drop it on my flow. If you introduce another argument/responce in FF (why would you do that) I just won't flow it.
If your opponent asks you for a card, I will give you 45 seconds to pull it up. If you can't get it by then, you concede to not having the article.
If you make me laugh during constructive, you'll get 30 speaks. Good luck with that. If I look super disinterested you should probably move on to another point. I generally look pretty angry but I swear I'm very friendly so don't be afraid to ask questions.
Things I just hate: countdowns before speech, blocks solely built on cards, postrounding, laughing during other speeches, cursing/rude comments, weak endings, asking for too many cards, anecdotals/overexplanation of one person's situation, spreading, overuse of the word "judge"
Incase you have any questions post round you can email me at samadaga99@gmail.com
Silly little things for my own entertainment
+1 speaks if say "be so for real" before you read a block
+1 speaks if you tell me "judge knows whats up" at the end of FF

Hi! My name is Ryan and I use he/him pronouns. I debated for Mark Twain I.S.239 for 2 years, and am now a high school junior at BTHS.
I don't have many preferences, but these are a few that I have, ranked from most important to least important:
1) Be respectful, I will allow cursing if you feel the need to, but any speech directed to others that can be offensive will not be tolerated. Slurs will also be completely intolerable. (This reflects mostly on speaker points)
2) Do not speed debate. It does not matter how much you can say if I cannot comprehend the speed at which you are speaking.
3) Please speak if you want to speak. Do not cut someone off or outside of your speech, but if you are in cross for example, and want to speak, SPEAK. If you do not feel that you are allowed to, ask to speak!
I will not flow crossfire, but I do pay attention and it will be counted to speaker points. My timer will be visible to you guys. I will start timing as soon as I hear you begin, just start with a countdown.
If a card is called, and you cannot provide it, it will be ignored!
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at ryanfung.ny@gmail.com

I am a varsity debater. I have been doing PF debate for 4 years.
Tech > Truth to a very limited extent, I'll buy most arguments at face value but I struggle with voting on them unless there's well warranted weighing
No weighing = no vote
Defense not sticky
I would advise against running prog. But I'll evaluate it. However the team running prog needs to really persuade me well because I'll most likely default the other team.
Speaks:
30s for food or drink
Ask me before round on messenger how to get a 30 (prob smth silly)

When judging a debate, there are a few important things that I look for. The first thing that I look for is good sportsmanship. All debaters should show respect to one another and encourage each other. Next, it is important that each debater has a clear understanding of their topic which should be supported by reliable sources. Lastly, it is important that the debaters are able to rebut their opponents points.
Thank you,
Alana Itkin

Experience:
I'm a senior in HS and I've been debating for 3 years. I'm familiar with debate terminologies. I'll flow along, weigh your arguments and give you the reasons for my decision along with feedbacks at the end.
My preferences
I don't mind fast talking but make sure it's clear and understandable.
I do consider crossfires, but if you brought up new arguments in cross, make sure to expand on those in the next speech.
If you have a good point but don't extend/bring it up again by latest in the summary speech, I'll consider that dropped and won't take it into account when making my decision.
Focus on the resolution itself, I don't entertain counter-plans nor how likely the resolution is to happen.
The strongest arguments for me are those that are logical, backed up by evidence, and have clear impacts.

NYCUDL PF:
-
Tech > Truth --> I'll vote on anything with a clear claim, warrant, impact as long as it's not outright problematic
-
Speed: go nuts as long as you are clear and enunciate. Pls know your limits don’t speak insanely fast if you're just slurring your words at that point.
-
I lean towards policy-style debate/affs. That isn’t to say I won’t vote on theory, Ks, etc, but policy is a sweet spot for me
-
Weigh : make sure to do comparative weighing and provide well-explained link-level weighing. Saying "we o/ weigh on magnitude" and calling it a day is NOT weighing.
-
If you don’t weigh, your not winning
-
I appreciate it when weighing begins early in the round (even as early as rebuttal speeches). Saying your arguments outweigh in rebuttal is a great tactic to use on arguments that are more fundamentally true with lesser impacts
-
Signpost clearly
-
Extend arguments (explain your links, impacts, etc)
-
For new debaters: Make new offensive and defensive arguments in rebuttal speeches. This might seem pretty obvious, but new debaters often have a tendency to go in circles re-explaining the same refute over again in different fonts and applying them to the entire case. This isn't to say cross-applying arguments is bad, in fact pls do cross-apply it is a good strategy. Just beware of repeating yourself and aim to think of new arguments that specifically relate to each contention. A rebuttal speech where I am almost always writing something down on my flow is a good one and I’ll give credit to that.
-
I don't evaluate cross-fire and frankly, I really don’t care about it. If a new argument is made in cross-fire, it must be brought up again in a speech for it to be evaluated
-
I place great weight on evidence transparency and have 0 tolerance for lying/misquoting evidence so if you have any fake cards delete them. now.
-
If a team cards you, I expect immediate proof (no shuffling through/scrambling to get your cards together)
-
I don’t insert myself into a round, but if I feel my ballot is weighted primarily on a piece of evidence, I will ask to see it (this is in extreme cases though, it is up to you to call for/challenge cards)
Extra:
-
If your team goes 2nd and you take prep right after the very 1st constructive speech, you are getting a 27 for speaks. Why? It's annoying
-
Remember debate at the end of the day is a game and I really enjoy when debaters remain appropriate while also keeping it light-hearted!! If you can make a relevant joke or make me smile I'll defo up your speaks.

UPDATED: October 4th, 2022
I'm not sure what happened to my previous Paradigm that was posted, but it appears to have been erased/lost. My apologies as I just learned of this at the Simpson Storm tournament (Sat, Oct 1, 2022) this past weekend.
My name is Joe Rankin and I am the head coach at Bettendorf High School in Bettendorf, IA. I have been the head coach at Bettendorf since the 2005-2006 school year. I primarily coach Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Congressional Debate, and Extemporaneous Speaking...however, I am familiar and have coached all NSDA sanctioned speech/debate events over my time at Bettendorf.
In terms of my coaching paradigm, I'd generally consider these the 'highlights:'
- I prefer topical debate. The resolution was voted on by coaches and students through the NSDA voting process. That's what I want to hear about.
- I can generally handle 'speed,' but that doesn't mean I enjoy it. I'd rather help you develop skills that you will actually utilize interacting with other human beings outside of this one particular subset of existence - so I'd much prefer a rate that is more akin to real-world applications.
- You can make whatever arguments you want to make...but I generally haven't voted on many things associating with theory, kritiks (or however you want to misspell the word critique), or other generally non-topical arguments you make in the round. It takes more work for me to believe those types of arguments are true and not a whole lot of work to make me believe those types of arguments are generally false. So, I wouldn't encourage this type of argumentation in front of me.
I figure that is sufficient for now. If you have any questions, I tend to give you that window before the round begins while setting up to judge. If not, please feel free to ask before the round. The end goal of the round for me is a competitive academic environment that is focused on education. I don't mind answering questions that will help all of us improve moving forward.

My name is Sameeha Saleem. I’m a student judge. I’ve been doing debates in many different formats but specifically, I did public forum debates for two years during middle school.
Important things to consider:
-
get to the round as soon as you can
-
Be respectful and considerate of your fellow debaters (no discriminatory remarks)
-
Before starting, please tell me your name, what speaker you are, and your pronouns
-
try to be as clear as possible
-
Everyone has their own speeds of speaking and understanding so try to speak at a reasonable speed
-
Will always keep time, but just as a recommendation debaters should also keep time.
-
Cards might be called if felt that they are necessary.
-
Always state where you got your evidence for.
-
Try to weigh in your summaries and definitely in your final focuses.
-
I won't count anything that happens during crossfires unless someone brings it up in their speech.
-
No new points should be brought up during the summary or final focus.
-
Verbal feedback will be given if asked, as well as written feedback on tabroom

Hello,
I am currently a sophomore at the University of Iowa studying Business Analytics, Ethics and Public Policy, and Economics. A little bit of background about my debate career. I competed all four years in a variety of events including Public Forum, Student Congress, Dramatic Interpretation, and Spontaneous Speaking. My "main" event was Student Congress for which I am a 3 time national qualifier, a TOC qualifier, and a national semifinalist. But, all this to say that I am familiar with debate :)
These are some of my basic expectations in round -
- Make sure that all your arguments are presented in a clear claim evidence reasoning format. It is hard to flow if you are just presenting a list of claims or a list of reasoning... that makes no sense to me. If you want me to stay engaged follow a clean line of reasoning. I love patterns and organized arguments.
- When you get to the end of the round, or you are done making new arguments, WEIGH. Take your arguments and your opponents and put them against each other and tell me why I should vote for you over them. This is what makes a good debater, your ability to persuade.
- I love new and interesting arguments. Back when I was in high school, my partner and I had the record for running some of the coolest cases. So, if you want to present something that may not be conventional, I am here for it. Bonus points if you make arguments about extinction and make it make sense Just make sure that you are clear and have a flow of argumentation ready.
- Lastly, be articulate, clear, and stay clam and focused. You are here to win yes, but also learn and have fun. Don't let the pressure get to you :)
Goodluck!

I debated several years at UNI. Most of my debating and judging experience is in Policy debate. I’m currently the coach at Ottumwa.
Clarity is important. So are impacts. So is being a decent person to everyone in the debate.
Really successful teams will spend time explaining how the impacts in the round interact with each other and how I should prioritize them. I have a hard time in any debate event voting on a theory or framework argument that doesn’t have an impact. “That argument isn’t allowed so you can’t vote for it” is weak sauce. Give me something about why it shouldn’t be allowed.
Everyone should participate in their cross-ex. If your partner needs help, that can be fine but they need a chance to do it on their own first.
I’m a stickler about time. If the timer goes off, you need to stop giving the speech. Stealing prep is sketchy. If you aren’t using all your speech time, you’d better be absolutely crushing the debate or it’ll show in your speaker points.
You can put me on the email chain: simonson.zd@gmail.com

HI! I am a former public forum debater, so I flow my rounds. Make sure to be polite and respectful to your opponents during the round. I will be able to understand you as long as you speak at a tolerable pace and articulate your speeches. If I can't hear an argument properly I don’t include it in my flow, and it won't be counted towards my vote. I also don’t flow cross, so make sure that you bring up any of those points later in the round. Lastly, I award speaker points based on debaters who articulate their points clearly.

I’m experienced and i disclose
Tech with warrants > truth. Lay appeal goes to speaks
Don’t be -ist or rude or you’ll get dropped
Prog: read it if you really want to, just know I will not be a good evaluator. if i get super confused, i will vote on substance. no rvis
Fw: Don't read stupid fw like “vote for the team with the most important impacts” or “vote for the team that does a cost benefit analysis”. if you read fw there should be warranting
Speed: i'm okay with some speed, not okay with spreading ur opponents out of the round
Cross
-
I don't flow it. PLS have fun and be sarcastic and funny. Don't take it too seriously
-
Concessions in cross are overrated, i'm not going to vote for you just because your opponents worded a response slightly badly
Speech stuff:
-
I don’t flow card names so if you say “extend jones” idk what you are talking about. Tell me what the card says
-
Don’t read a 1410928492018 hour long otrm. Just tell me where you’re starting and SIGNPOST.
-
signpost through all speeches it will help me immensely. numbering responses = ❤️
-
Going back to your own case in first rebuttal is dumb, i won’t flow anything
-
Sticky defense does not exist lol yall gotta extend
-
warrant everything out for me and implicate - for both offense AND defense. no, i will not vote off of a two word turn with zero warranting just because “tHeY drOPpeD thiS”. Same thing for frontlines and ev clash – tell me why to prefer you and why that matters.
-
If no one weighs for me then I’ll intervene and be very sad (probability > mag > scope generally, this is likely to change if you're running a sv or racism arg)
for any questions after the round just email me :)
