PF/LD Paradigms

I’m first and foremost an interp coach. Treat me like a lay judge who happens to know the rules (and yes- I know the rules). No spreading, clash is fine. If you really want to pick up my ballot, be sure to focus on cross-examination. I find that a strong, quality CX can illustrate your ability to communicate, prove your points, illustrate your knowledge and understanding of the debate and show your best engaged debate skills. Anyone can read a prepared card. Show me you know what to do with it.

On an aside, I do like debaters to keep it professional. I like it when people stand for cross-examination and are polite and supportive to their opponents before and after the round. I like it when I feel the teams are focused and paying attention not only to their opponents' speeches but also to their team member's speeches.

Congress Paradigms

I look for competitors who are prepared to speak on any topic - especially if they have prepared to speak on both sides of the topic. I look for quality speeches that add value to the debate; if we're four cycles in and you aren't bringing new information, crystallizing information we've heard, or providing a new rebuttal then it's easy for your speech to get lost amongst the masses. Activity in the chamber is good - I'm looking for you to be engaged in listening to other speeches, asking valuable questions, and working together to run a fair and efficient chamber.

Interp Paradigms

I was a high school competitor all four years - competing in all Interp events (DI, HI, OO, prose, poetry, Duo, Duet) and Congressional Debate. I competed on the Texas and National Circuits. Here's the big thing to know - you should never change your style, material, or story to try to get my 1. I will always respect the stories you choose to tell, the performance you're developing, and your courage to be you and share messages important to you. Just be you. My ballots may sound tough, but it comes out of a desire to help you improve. I've provided insight into what I'm looking for but none of it should force you to change your content.

For Interp Events, I'm looking for honest storytelling (talk to me like a person) and tech that helps enhance your story and not detract from it. I'm looking for clear, well-developed characters. I'm looking for an excellent intro that provides meaning and importance for your piece. I'm looking for excellent execution of pacing and incorporation of levels. Draw me into your story and leave me with something to take away. In addition, for all binder events, I'm a stickler for binder etiquette.

For Public Speaking Events (OO and INFO), I'm looking for topics that you are personally invested in. I'm looking for an engaging AGD, a clear vehicle, and well-defined points supported by a balance of ethos, pathos, and logos. Share your heart story and be honest with it. Most importantly, these are two events where you can really be yourself. Be your best self, sure. But don't feel like you have to put on a whole song and dance to get my one. I'm looking for an inspirational, conversational tone. INFO - I'm looking for creative visuals that are well-executed and add value to your speech without being a distraction.

For Extemp, I'm looking for a clear understanding of the question and a definitive answer with supporting analysis (cite those sources guys). Two points or three points are fine, depending on the question and your approach to answering the question. I just want your speech to have a clear sense of structure and organization. I'm also looking for strong presentation skills. Have vocal variety, adopt a conversational tone, know how to present in a way that is approachable for all audience types and not just those well-versed in current events and extemp. Don't be afraid to crack a joke, but don't rely purely on humor. Fluency breaks, circular speech (rehashing points and repeating yourself), and poor time management could affect your rank in round.

General note for everyone - I have a really bad thinking face and I'm going to look confused and upset. I'm not - don't take it personally! It's just my face and I don't really have a whole lot of control over that. Plenty of times I've had my own students tell me they were sure I hated what they were doing and then I was very complimentary of their work. So I promise you my face has nothing against you! It's just a grumpy face.

Speech: I am a college professor have 3 year debate and speech judging experiences. All types of presentations are welcome. I make decision base on individual presentation confidence, stage body postures, eye contacts and logical thinking flows.

Don't go too fast. Be clear and concise.

Be respectful to your opponents. It goes a long way! I do not tolerate homophobic, racist, or sexist comments.

This is your round. Be respectful of bodies that are in the room and those you are discussing. I'm open to most arguments at any speed. I come from a policy and critical background. Do the weighing work so I don't have to, because I won't intervene for you if I can help it. The offense/defense debate is important, so think about your route to the ballot. This round can be a complete imaginary if you want, but not just for the sake of winning a debate round. Think about the critical implications toward/away from solvency. If you have more specific questions, you can ask prior to the round.

Background:
*I was a high school speech and debate student back in 1994-1998. I mostly competed in extemp, oration, LD debate, and mock trial.
*I judged all through college and volunteer-helped my high school until I became a teacher.
*In 2003 I became a high school teacher/speech and debate coach, coaching all the events.
*I've coached at multiple schools in the last 20 years: Keller, Flower Mound, Lewisville, and now Hebron.
*I'm an NSDA 2-diamond coach. I'm also a published author/poet.

For LD, PF, and Policy:
*Think of me as an "old school" judge. I want to hear traditional cases and arguments. I care about public speaking, philosophy, and logic, not just the evidence cards. Be mindful, reading a card doesn't mean the judge has to accept the argument you're associating with that evidence.
*I will keep a detailed flow during the round. To help me flow, I like to hear each part of the case signposted in each speech. If I don't understand where to flow something, it might not make it onto my flow.
*Please speak at a normal conversational speed. If debaters speak too quickly and are not clear, I will miss arguments/evidence and it won't get onto my flow for the round.
*I encourage all debaters to be as polite and professional as possible. If someone is yelling or being rude, I can't focus on what they are saying and their arguments will not make it onto my flow.
*I like to hear voters in the final speeches. When possible, I will use those voters to determine my RFD.

For Congress:
*I judge speeches on a combination of public speaking skills and the structure/logic/evidence used.
*Be prepared before you get to the round; don't force short breaks so you can have more time to prepare your speeches.
*Do not take excessive breaks/recesses.
*Know your parliamentary procedure. If you think the Presiding Officer has made a mistake, deal with it immediately.
*I like when representatives professionally provide direct clash and reference previous speeches from others in the round.

For IEs:
*For the ballot comments I will do my best to provide both positive comments and something to work on.
*Many of the competitors are very impressive and a lot of round ranking can come down to small details.
*I like clever introductions that really get my attention with personal stories, jokes, etc.
*In poetry rounds, I like to hear the cadence of the poetry; if your poetry performance sounds like a prose performance, you may not rank as high as other competitors who perform poetry as spoken word.

I've got a few tournaments under my belt, and I can tell you, taking your time to clearly outline your speech goes a long way with me.

Here's what I look for: clear and concise format and flow. No speed reading, please -- no matter how good your presentation is, if I can't follow, I can't judge it properly.

Gestures that guide me through the speech are also key!

And please remember, don't be rude and have fun.

Hi! I'm Danielle and I'm a current junior at the University of California, Berkeley. I competed in Speech and Debate for four years during high school, with my first year being in PF and the remaining three years being in speech. My main event was OO, but I also competed in Extemp, INFO, and Impromptu. I do not have much experience in Interp, but I do have tons of experienced in prepared platform events.

OO/Info- The most important thing I am looking for is just the natural connection you have with your topic. Yes, all the tactical parts of the performance are super important, but I want you to deliver your speech in a way that is authentic to YOURSELF. I look forward to hearing all your stories!

Extemp- I do tend the base off the three-part answer model, but what I am really looking for is a well crafted argument. I want you to be able to come into the round and teach me about the topic, and convince me in why I should care about it. Evidence is KEY and citing evidence is crucial.

PF- I don't like spreading, but it will not be a make or break to speaks. However, if I can't understand what you are saying, you will get voted down. Both sides need to give clear voters in summary and final focus. I won't flow cross, but if something crucial happens during cross it will be considered. Most importantly, tell me WHY I should vote for you. What makes your case better than your opponents? Again, clear voters are key.

In Public Forum and Extemp: I value delivery & analysis supported by evidence from credible sources. I want to know the significance of your topic and what are the impacts of your arguments, tell me why it matters. I can't vote for points and impacts I can't hear or understand, so slow up for key points and explain them clearly. Understand that you are Debating not Arguing, this is an important distinction that must be known by each debater!

In Congressional Debate: I value the natural delivery of points and impacts and reasonable positions. I look for acknowledgment of prior speakers' points and clash leading to good argumentation and refutation, and for purposeful questioning leading to clarity, understanding, or insight. A lack of clash is frowned upon. Knowledge of and adherence to Parliamentary Procedure is expected in the chamber. Skillful Presiding Officers make sessions a positive experience for all and will be ranked accordingly.

In Oratory, Info, and Impromptu: I value your originality, creativity, and persuasive presentation of ideas of personal importance. Cite your sources, explain their importance, and tell me why it matters.

In DI, HI, DUO, Poetry, and Prose: It is crucial that you tell a story in a meaningful and impactful manner. Characterization, gestures and facial expressions, and, vocal variation will all add to the overall decision. Along, with the dramatic structure of the piece and mindful storytelling!

Overall speaking skills or/and argumentation are critical to winning! But remember the most important thing is that you learn!

Hi y'all! I'm Ellen Marshall. I’m a social sciences student at UT Austin. As a high school student, I competed in every IE available at the time (so not Info or POI!) excluding Duo, but I specialized in Oratory, Prose, and HI/DI. Since then, I’ve had some experience volunteer-coaching (mostly oratory) and as a hired judge. I’m not affiliated with any high school. Here's the gist of what I wanna see, followed by a much longer version with more specifics.

THE SHORT VERSION FOR SPEECHES (OO, INFO, EXTEMP)

Have a clean and engaging delivery. Organize clearly what you are going to say in your introduction. Specificity > breadth in your topic. Make your speech personal, approachable, and interesting.

THE SHORT VERSION FOR IEs

Inspire emotion, tell a story, and be polished. Don’t be excessively crude or graphic. Creativity, inventiveness, technical skill, and personal connections to the plot/theme are all big pluses.

SPEAKING EVENTS (OO, INFO, EXTEMP)

I emphasize delivery, organization, and material depth. Bring plenty of energy and speak confidently and clearly. Vary your delivery, bring in comedy and drama as appropriate. Signpost your speech clearly in your intro. I find an argument that is in-depth on one area is preferable to a shallow overview of a larger topic.

Extemp should include plenty of cited sources. However, do not just summarize a series of articles. Explain briefly what the source says and explain why it is relevant to your stance. You don’t have much time, so have purpose in everything you say,

The number one most common criticism I find myself writing for Extempers is in delivery. Enunciate clearly and do not spread. Vary your delivery speed, pitch and tone, make eye contact to the best of your ability, and move with purpose. The event is called extemporaneous speaking for a reason, so I’m more forgiving of stumbles or rushing than I would be in OO or Info, but it’s still a speaking event. Being a good presenter is just as important as having a well-researched argument.

I find OO and Info have an odd tendency to be conflated with each other these days. If you're giving an oratory, you need to be trying to persuade me on something, and if you’re giving an Info, you need to give an as-unbiased-as-possible overview of your subject.

Also, for either event, PLEASE come memorized. It's always clear who has written a speech, and who is doing improv off bullet points. This is something you’re performing for a whole season. It’ll be easier for you just to write a speech than re-invent the wheel every time you perform. Lastly, I prefer to see topics students have a personal stake in in some way. You’re picking these topics, and I’d like to know why it matters to you. Covering something mainstream you have no stake in is much less interesting to me.

A final note specific to OOs: please make your solution realistic. This is my single largest pet peeve. If your topic is on a massive societal or international issue, acknowledge that, and offer day-to-day changes the audience can make instead. This isn't extemp: policy changes are not always a feasible answer.

IEs:

When it comes to content in an IE piece, I have no preference between character- or story-driven pieces. I’m also relatively flexible with cuttings that stray from an author’s original intention. I do, however, take issue with excessively dark, mean, or risqué material. Don’t punch down, don’t be unnecessarily graphic or crude, and don’t go for the ‘shock factor’. Heavy themes are to be expected in dramatic pieces, but cover them tastefully and respectfully. You never know what your audience may have experienced in their own lives.

Regardless of event, I want to see three things: an emotional connection to your piece, a complete story, and polish and creativity. The emotional core of an HI should be different than a DI, the way a Poetry performance tells a story is different than a Duo, and the blocking and characterizations used in each event varies greatly.

As long as your performance makes me feel something and has a clear beginning, middle, and end, you’re golden. Those two things are your foundation. Once you have them, I’m most concerned with how clean your piece is.

Keep your character voices and physicality distinct and consistent. Enunciate and carry yourself with confidence. Be memorized. Block with purpose. A piece with no blocking is dull, but a piece that never stops moving is exhausting.

Please make use of silence and pauses!!! It’s such an underrated element of a piece. Giving your audience (and yourself!) time to think and breathe in appropriate spots is maybe the single biggest improvement you can make to your performance.

IEs are an art. Put your heart into it, make whatever you’re performing your own. A personal connection to the subject matter is a huge plus (especially in dramatic pieces), and if you have one, I’d love to hear it in your intro. Bonus points as well for inventiveness/creativity in your cutting, blocking, and acting ability!

I have countless years of experience as a judge/coach for HS debate, and I was a collegiate competitor back in the day ... Not to mention I have been judging on the local, state and national level around the country.

• PLZ treat your opponent the way you would want to be treated, there is no room for rudeness or hate in debate
• if you treat us judges terribly I will spread your name among the community and encourage everyone to blacklist you
• tournaments that use .5 speaks are VERY bad, .1 all THE way
• My philosophy is Teachers teach, Coaches coach and Judges judge ... it is what it is
• Talking fast is ok, spreading is a big NO for me ... also if its not a bid tournament I DONT want to be on the chain / will not look at the doc

POs: I'm not gonna lie, I will be judging you the harshest - you run the chamber not me and I expect nothing but the best. Please be fair with everyone , but if I feel the PO is turning a blind eye or giving preferential treatment I will document it

Competitors: Creativity, impacts, structure and fluency are a must for me.

don't just bounce off of a fellow representatives speech, be you and create your own speech - its ok to agree tho

don't lie about sources/evidence... I will fact check

best way to get high ranks is to stay active thru the round

I am a diamond level coach, who has been judging over 25 years. My background has intersected with most events throughout my experiences. I started competing on the college circuit in policy debate in the 90's and from there moved into Lincoln Douglas. After a year and a half I made the switch to platform events and I am nationally recognized in Duo, Dramatic, Poetry, Prose, POI, and After Dinner Speaking. TIFA which is the college version of TFA, I have been two time back to back Duo State Champion, as well as state Champion in Poetry.

In Debate:

Good debate is just good debate, so make sure you are clear, give weighing mechanism, link into the resolution, K's are fine but make them clear and understandable if you are going to include them. Speed is ok, just know when you need to slow down at times to solidify your case and make sure you are clear. Be assertive, not aggressive there is a line and make sure you know the difference. I also like purpose behind arguments, so please do not waste time just to run something because you think it is cool, trendy, or funny, as some adult may not share your thoughts on the choice. Debate is a wonderful event, that we have some many amazing tools to use, so please be respectful of this from of discourse.

World Schools is a great crossover event and it is one that I have been supporting at the national level for sometime, and very excited to see the growth of this event. That being said, I am a purist and I want it to stay World School Debate. I am looking for strong substantives, clear burdens, and for the model to be used properly and effectively, if you choose to provide one. Further, make sure you protect and defend the model. Please use POI's likewise be sure to give POI's, at least one to two. Use the key areas strategy, delivery, and content to ensure that you have left no points behind in the debate. You are building a narrative that must compel me to prefer your world view and meet your burden. Clash is crucial, so good coverage is essential down the bench.

Congress: I like well constructed speeches that are not read to me, referring to speech is fine, leave room for clash as this is debate, so I want to see you engage with the chamber. Stay active, the round is long so keep pressure with good questioning to stay relevant in the debate. I also welcome humor, if tasteful and done well.

Platform Speaking: (Extemporaneous, OO, Info, Imp)

I expect to solid speech structure with full introduction, transitions in body, and conclusion. The analysis should have some depth and should make a strong connection to your topic. Fluency should be smooth and if you have the occasional break, just work to not make it a big deal. I know being online can be difficult and there may be things that distract you where you are performing remotely, so that is understandable. Engage with the audience, your speech is for them, whether OO or Extemporaneous, you created a speech to tell it to us, so don't forget that. I know in Extemporaneous it can be tempting to have your speech on your screen, just know when you read a speech it is different and that connection with your audience can be lost, so I would rather have you perform to me, than read. Also, in Extemporaneous you need sources to ground your analysis, I also like a variety of good and challenging sources as opposed to the easiest finds. Pacing yourself is important, so is time management as you move through your points and finally do not rush. Three key things for me:

*Solid and fluent Delivery

*Clear Structure that supports your topic and adherence to time management throughout that structure

*Variety of sources, preference at least 5 as it is important to document and ground your analysis

Interpretation:

Interpretation is a personal favorite. I am open to all innovation and ways to bring your story to life. I do want to see a strong cutting that allows for you to build and reach a climax that will change your character in some way. If you are weaving POI, poetry, or Prose, make sure you structure your weave to give your program a climax that is clear. I have been a theatre director for over 20 years, so I love blocking and characterization as they are a part of breathing life into your interpretation. I like specificity and nuance, the text gives us so much as performers to work with. I like to see your performances as a collection of choices that ultimately allow the audience to experience the authenticity of your piece. I like purposeful gestures and mime work, but not just because it looked cool. I love moments, so make sure to be thoughtful in creating them, but hold them so we do not miss them whether in recording or live performance. At the end of the day, I am one of your biggest fans, so perform for me...allow me to get to know your character, to laugh, to cry, and most of all to experience why you chose to tell this story.

Interp Specifics:

Author's Intent-I am a writer and I believe it is important that the intent of the author is considered and respected. I do not mind if it a piece is cut, just that it doesn't violate the overall message of the author.

Introductions-I like to see purpose driven intros, that have pertinent information I need to know. I do not like introductions to exceed 30-45 seconds, or to become a performance art piece themselves. If I should know about conditions, flashbacks, time elapse that would help better inform my experience, then it should be in the introductions. If you choose to do an intro for humor only, and do not give us any information then I hope it is really funny, because you sacrificed the time you could have educated your audience. I am ok with humor in HI.

Blocking-Yes! Dream big and block bigger....I am ready for whatever you have come up with please engage us, build environments, and use your space in ALL events.

Binder work-Yes! See above, I love it! I want you to explore, so nothing is too much as long as well executed.

Characterization-I believe the story is paramount in any event. Please be thoughtful and authentic, organic over technical any day of the week. I like to be in the moment with you, so challenge yourself and your audience through believable and honest performance.

Make sure your speaking style is clear and comprehensive, you have your speeches memorized (if in a memorized event), and you have good tone differentiation in your voice. It’s important for the speech to be engaging and humor is welcomed.

DEBATE:

As I am a lay judge, I would like the case to be easy to understand and “lay-parent judge”-friendly. I would not prefer spreading or any progressive debating. While I may be keeping time, it is important to keep time for yourselves.

My name is Jude and I had the amazing opportunity to take a debate class throughout all four years of high school. I primarly did interp throughout high school and was a nationals/tfa/nietoc qualifer in POI for a few of those years. With that in mind, it is more than likely that I will probably judge in you an interp event. My judging style in Interp is pretty typical- I want to see a good story, good blocking and if you do a book event I really want to see some good book blocking. Above all, I want you to be yourself in your pieces! In other words, when you preform I want too see some aspects of you and who you are reflected in your performance as I find that makes for the best pieces!

However, if I end judging a debate round I do have some experience in CX so I do the understand the very basics of most debate events. I would go ahead and say that you should probably treat me like I am a very traditional/parent judge. I would avoid spreading if I'm your judge (or at least avoid spreading very fast) and I tend to vote very heavily on case arguments.TO CLARIFY I HAVE A AUDITORY PROCESSING DISORDER, IF YOU CHOOSE TO SPREAD I VERY LIKELY WONT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY UNDERSTAND YOU AND THEREFORE WONT BE ABLE TO PROPERLY FLOW YOUR ARGUMENTS.

I've competed in congress pretty much every year and I had some success here in there in the event. To congress competitors: I obviously well research speeches that are presented competely. However, I love great clash in your speeches and I love funny speeches!

IEs:

For speech delivery, I appreciate that you speak clearly without excessive word crutches. Use time wisely to fully develop the speech. Fluid speech and professional mannerisms will be noted.

On EXTEMPT/INF/OO, make sure your points discussed clearly address the question that you’ve chosen. Following the standard speech outline and including clear impact analysis would help. Cite your sources. I read broadly about economics, geopolitics and technologies on a regularly basis. Logical analysis of event and impact will be noted.

On INTERP, it is a performance and characterization is important. All movements (gestures, head, and other body movements) are done with purpose.

Debate:

- I do not mind speed as long as words can be understood. I also evaluate on speaking ability.

- I will evaluate how each side address other’s arguments with good logic and evidence.

- Off-clock road map is much appreciated.
