About me:
-
I am a Judge for Peninsula High School. Admittedly, I am more in my element judging IE, but I also thoroughly enjoy judging debate. I may know some basic concepts, but I’m still learning and possibly am unfamiliar with more specific terminology.
-
I try really hard to be fair and objective to both sides of an argument. I do not let my biases or background knowledge taint who or how I vote each round. I vote for which team did the better debating, not which team is closer to truth.
-
Style: Please speak slowly and clearly. Flow your opponents, and answer their main arguments sequentially. I prefer the debate to have an organizational clash that makes reasoned judgement possible.
-
Quality: I care about argument quality, not argument quantity. I vote for the team that did the better debating. Source quality matters to me - if you read qualified sources, tell me their qualifications and read exact quotes (not debater biased paraphrasing) and it is more likely I believe it.
-
Note Taking: I will take notes during each speech, to keep a record to better organize the debate to help evaluate which side wins.
-
Rebuttals matter: In your last speeches - be sure to summarize the main points you want me to vote on and offer impact why that outweighs your opponents main points. I will limit my decision to solely arguments extended in the last two speeches. Completely new arguments cannot be first brought up in the rebuttals, because both sides need a chance to develop the argument in earlier speeches first. If new arguments are brought up, I will ignore them.
-
Have fun, do your thing! Please treat each other with respect.

Yes I want to be on the email chain mattconraddebate@gmail.com. Pronouns are he/him.
My judging philosophy should ultimately be considered a statement of biases, any of which can be overcome by good debating. The round is yours.
I’m a USC debate alum and have had kids in policy finals of the TOC, a number of nationally ranked LDers, and state champions in LD, Original Oratory, and Original Prose & Poetry while judging about a dozen California state championship final rounds across a variety of events and a NIETOC final in Informative. Outside of speech and debate, I write in Hollywood and have worked on the business side of show business, which is a nice way of saying that I care more about concrete impacts than I do about esoteric notions of “reframing our discourse.” No matter what you’re arguing, tell me what it is and why it matters in terms of dollars and lives.
Politically, I’m a moderate Clinton Democrat and try to be tabula rasa but I don’t really believe that such a thing is possible.

I am mainly a speech judge, and will be considered a lay for Debate.
I am excited to participate in Debate as needed.
You can help me by:
- giving off time road maps
- in-speech signposting.
- Introduce your name
- Tell me the length of your speech
- giving me voter issues of why you won in the last speech
- any other tips/suggestions to make this the best for all involved!

I am most interested in hearing your own personal style of speaking that represents you as an individual and not a copy of other speakers.
My use of the word "speechiness"
There is a tendency for speakers to overemphasize certain words at the ending of sentences sometimes unconnected to the inherent concept of the text and more just for performance. Often this comes off as over the top, or even unnatural bc it is unfounded. I hear this A LOT and most often in novice speakers.
Please make an effort to discover your unique presentational qualities!! It takes time and is hard to do, but discovering this will not only do wonders for your speeches, but also follow you in your life forever making you a better communicator in all areas of your life.
Like Oscar Wilde said, "Be yourself. Everyone else it taken".
Opinion on crying: while this is most certainly a valid way to express sadness, anger etc. It is not the only way, and certainly not the most used method by the great actors. So many other ways to express emotions. Sometimes, crying feels like the the easiest. Force yourself to explore other subtleties. Watch Meryl Streep. She'll make us cry as the audience before she does.
Grammar: I hear the same mistake over and over again in speeches.
Woman - wuh-men. Singular.
Women - wih-men. Plural.
This is one of those examples of the English language that makes it virtually impossible for anyone to learn it. How in the world can we explain these pronunciations!!?? Truth is we can't explain them. Just need to memorize them. Very often I hear the singular used, when the speaker means the plural. Yes, I am standing on a soap box like a pedantic parent! hahaha....you're right. Call me out on it. But since this is a SPEECH competition, I feel it is the exact place to be critical of the way we speak. Yes?

hi hi, i'm luna. i did policy for 2 years @ peninsula, graduated 2021.
add me to the email chain: lunakim626@gmail.com
i believe in my ability to flow well, but i haven't been in round for a while. if you're spreading and you're not clear, i'll have a harder time obviously.
tech > truth: debate is a simulation of the world and you will have to prove that i should favor tech over truth, but i do lean towards tech as debate is also a game.
Policy Affs: i like them. i read soft-left affs during my time in policy, but any type of policy aff will be good.
K-Affs: i'm less familiar with K-affs as i personally never read them, but they can lead to compelling rounds so read them if you want to.
CPs / DAs: make it clear why the CP uniquely avoids your DAs and why i should care; or why perm doesn't work.
K's: i like K's, but you need to make it abundantly clear how the K links to the aff. you can read normal or high theory K's, but generally i will find it harder to connect high theory K's to the aff unless the neg does work.
T: go for it if you believe there's some form of in round abuse but generally I think T is read as an easy way out. that said, i'll vote on it if Aff doesn't do good work on conflicting interps.
i like interesting and unique cases and strats. it's part of the reason why debate is a fun game.
speaks:
don't say problematic things. that's a surefire way to upset me and get me to dock your points substantially.
we're all in round for 2 hours. be nice to each other, be clear, and try to have some fun.

Knowing myself, I'm most inclined to rate you more highly if you adeptly utilize all 3 modes of persuasion, but I consider pathos less foundational than ethos and logos. In other words, if you only demonstrated 2 out of the 3, ethos and logos will score higher than pathos + _______. No offense, pathos.
Be ideacentric, listen to each other, be respectful, but try to advance the arguments without too much rewinding.
If you can convey your thought in 10 words instead of 50 words, please do. A concise argument that is direct and to the point is more impactful than a rambling one.

This is my 10th year coaching, and I have judged debate every year of my career thus far. I am a flow judge and prefer if you do not spread. If you do, please at least enunciate on your taglines and share your case with us. I am a firm believer that debate is still a communication event, so if every person in the room cannot understand your every word, you're not really debating. I've spent most of my coaching world in Speech, so if you use heavy jargon, please explain it occasionally. i.e. I know what Theory is, but if you get into "Wag the Dog" or "ROTB" I will be totally lost without a little bit of explanation.
I'm fine with K's and Topicality, as long as they are well linked. I understand the allure of treating debate as a game, but I am a classicist in that I believe it should be about competing evidence, exchanging ideas, and above all, clash. You cannot win my ballot unless you clash.
That being said, this is your debate! Clearly tell me why you win in your voters and frameworks, and I will follow your lead. Enjoy yourself and I'm sure you'll do fine! Feel free to ask any other questions you may have before round.

I am a layperson/judge. I participated in debate during HS (policy) in the late 1980s, with success at several national tournaments. I have been judging various speech events over the past two years. I value clarity and logic, and look forward to judging more events. If I appear confused, consider readdressing the point.

TLDR: Your round! Run whatever framework you want and make my job easy.
I am a graduate student studying Communication Studies at CSULB, where I also teach public speaking as part of the program. I have been coaching speech and debate at Palos Verdes high school since 2020 and at El Camino College since 2023, where I also competed for 2 years in parli, impromptu & extemp, DI & POI, and IPDA.
Communication: Pass notes or talk to your partner it's up to you, just don't be disruptive. I'll flow whatever is said but don't egregiously speak while it's your partner's turn.
Impacts: Please have impacts. Tell me why the thing is bad don't just say it's bad and don't elaborate.
Speed: I've gotten worse with speed over the years but generally I don't mind it. I might clear you if you're unclear.
Kritiks: Mostly I include this section because I'm just waiting for the day that someone runs a K in front of me at a high school tournament. It happened once and it was so fun. Kritiks should have a clear link to the resolution. Advocacies and their solvencies should be clearly explained. K's (esp on the aff) should have a very clear framework for evaluation, a K without framework is hard to evaluate. Run whatever K you want. I ran anthro a lot when I was debating and I love a fun cap K. I'm not an expert on any given advocacy, treat me like a lay judge who happens to understand framework and theory.
Theory / Topicality: I'm open to a good T debate so long as it's properly structured (interpretation violation standards voters). If I vote on T, usually it's on articulated abuse. I don't mind running shells just to kick them, but it's a very bad decision to collapse to a theory shell that is just a time suck. Honestly open to any theory position, even jokey stuff as long as it's not bad, just don't run dumb stuff in the MO (I've seen new theory in the MO and it was a mess). I'll default to competing interps but you should state that somewhere in the theory.
RVIS: RVIs are fine when they are justified (your opponent is egregiously racist/misgendering/queerphobic/problematic or they run 7 blipped theory shells and kick all of them). I have never voted on an RVI, but I could. Usually, I think it's good to give people the benefit of the doubt or work it out on the flow, but if you gotta check someone you gotta check someone.
Signposting: Use taglines and tell me where you are on the flow "they say this, we say this" "judge go to advantage 1 and look at their solvency"
Timing: Time yourselves and time your opponents. I don't mind if you are slightly under or over time, but ensure it's not abusive. Call your opponents on time abuses if they are happening.

I don't have a lot of requirements when it comes to judging, but please keep these few things in mind:
-speak slowly and clearly so I can understand what you are saying (no spreading)
-be dynamic and articulate your arguments well
-be respectful to your opponent(s)
-please don't cut your opponent(s) off during cross examination periods
Thank you for keeping these things in mind, and I can't wait to judge you!

About me:
I mostly end up judging PuFo, so my paradigm is for that.
Judging style: Team
I like civility in the room. Be respectful and gain respect.
You don't need to change your style of speaking for me, I can follow fast speech, if I miss something, I do ask for cards mentioned.
Don't use too much technical stuff, if you do - explain it in short. Otherwise the argument will be lost on me. I have a daughter who does policy and LD and she has explained me what it is and how to evaluate it. Feel free to run it with me.
I give a lot of weight to impacts and mostly award points based on that.
Do not bring in a controversial topic in the debate unless it is absolutely necessary (eg: terrorism, 9/11, etc)
I do take notes so don't try to pull fast ones, chances are I will catch it (Not all the time though)
I like off time roadmap. Helps me be organized.
Judging style: Individual Speaker:
I award points based on how you speak, and how you conduct yourself in cross. If you are blatantly rude, offensive, racist, sexist, etc, you will be marked down to the lowest.
Let your opponent complete their thought in cross before interrupting.
General:
Do not try to shake hands.
If you need any clarity on paradigms, more than welcome to ask me before debate on a 1-1 basis or anyways.

Congress -
I value speeches that are rightly timed in the progression of the debate. This means I will equally weigh an author who explains the status quo as the same as a speaker who gave a crystal with minimal refutation rehash. I value speaking a lot as well. You need to convince me why I should believe you. That being said, I will drop senators who give rhetoric in lieu of evidence and logic chains.
PO will usually get the top 5 on my ballot if you are adequate with few mistakes. Overall round presence is extremely important, this includes effective cross-ex, round leadership, and familiarity of motions. Other than that, be kind to everyone else in the round and have fun!
Speech Events:
I give weightage to quality of arguments and the evidence provided.

I've been judging speech/debate since the beginning of the season.
I prefer a slower debate, as it allows for more enunciation and an overall clearer and coherent style of speaking. Being able to make eye contact as best as possible in this online format and using hand gestures helps connect me to your speech a lot more. Confidence is something I always look for, as you need to state your points like you agree with everything you're saying (even if you personally don't) because the confidence factor always make speeches a lot more engaging.
I would rather you go through just a few points in detail and analyze them, than speeding through many points without any explanation.
Furthermore, it is your burden to make your speech clear and understandable. If I miss an argument because you spoke too quickly and/or rushed through and I wasn't able to catch it, then you didn't make it.

I did policy debate in highschool, Parli and IPDA in college and I teach MS LD and PF. However, with that said, I mainly coach speech so I'm definitely not as proficient in flow as I was years ago. I am familiar with circuit rules. In terms of debate, I like sign posting, clear turns and impact calc. Basically, don't make me do your work for you. In terms of solvency presses, mmm its LD so not really. Kritiks, I'm really not a fan of them (unless its legitimate) but if dropped or not addressed I'll take it into voters. Finally watch cp language I'm using CHSA rules this tournament so no go. Also not a fan of evidence battles but will hear out framework debates. Basically, run it more trad and all will be well.

Above all else, I am interested in you showing me that you have listened to the opponent’s argument and shown me why your team has the superior plan, be it how we should orient ourselves in terms of our values, or how a government agency should carry out a specific proposal. I will be listening especially closely to the moments of clash. I will flow your arguments to the best of my ability and quickly summarize who I think won the debate and why. I will be weighing logos over pathos, but I want to hear a bit of both.
Secondly, I want to hear appropriate modulation in tone, pacing, and volume. I am interested in clarity. As an English teacher, I am probably more interested in these elements of rhetoric and style then the average judge.
I want to hear a clear moral philosophy guiding your value debates and all arguments, be they based on value, policy, or history.
Across Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary, and Public Forum, I want to hear credible sources, compelling warrants, and impacts that appeal to actual governing bodies and issues in the real world.
I will be listening closely to the clash. A winner will be the person who shows mastery over all the arguments in the topic’s orbit, and who puts that mastery to work by either developing a compelling and unique case or showing why the status quo and your counter-plan offer a better path forward.
Don’t be a jerk. I will be docking points if you are unnecessarily rude to the opposition. I have little tolerance for bigotry of any kind. Let’s make debate an activity that welcomes everyone, no matter their gender, socio-economic standing, race, or sexual orientation.
Some notes on specific events.
-
Policy & Public Forum - While I understand it is the norm to “spread,” I am more interested in hearing quality evidence and arguments rather than quantity. If you are speaking too quickly for me to understand, I won’t consider the contention.
-
Lincoln-Douglas - I’m aware that some like to steer the argument always toward their philosophical area of expertise. If you are interested in K-debate, please be prepared to explain your positions in plain English.
-
Parliamentary - Be respectful; I’m not really interested in hearing any heckling. If it seems you are using POIs to disrupt, I will dock points. I care mostly that you are able to listen closely and counter the opponent’s argument than your ability to summarize research.
-
Speech Events - I will place a higher value on style. I like a bit of humor, but be careful to not be offensive.

I mostly judge WSD, the below applies to such.
Clarity and cohesion (as a team) are good. Build off of each other.
If you don't have enough content to fill the entire allotted time, don't feel pressured to drag it out. A good speech can be shorter than 8 minutes.
Try to resolve conflicts on definitions and assumptions quickly. Not doing so cuts into the amount of time debating the substantive points, and it helps neither side.
Debate is a performance as much as it is intellectual exercise, so try to make sure your audience can understand it -- speaking at a conversational pace is best.
