Novice Lincoln-Douglas Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideHello,
My name is Anika (Ah - Ni - Kah) and my pronouns are She/Her/Hers. I coach for Northwood Lincoln Douglas and I've been debating for around 3 years. I am comfortable with all arguments, and I'm good with spreading as long as you share your case. I will say clear if I cannot understand you, and I expect you to time your own speeches.
My email is anika.akshantala@gmail.com
Have fun and good luck!
My Judging style is relaxed (Parent Judge), and I expect the same from contestants. I look for these qualities.
1. How well do you listen? Quality of listening becomes evident during rebuttals and cross examination. I pay close attention to how well a participant leverages opponents arguments to defeat the case (aff or neg).
2. Logic trumps everything. I look for solid correlations between value system and resolution.
3. Don’t use cards to impress the Judge. A good card which doesn’t do anything to support the argument is worthless. Cards are powerful, so use them wisely.
4. Personal affronts are an immediate demerit. It will reflect in speaking points. I will not brook even vague insinuations. Absolutely no personal attacks.
5. Please email me your cases at kk0402@gmail.com
6. And lastly, please do not spread!
Add me to the email chain: alexborgas@icloud.com
Read whatever you want as long as it’s well explained and warranted.
Your 2nrs and 2ars should make it clear why you won and what I should vote on. Tell me how I should evaluate the debate.
You should do comparative impact calculus between you and your opponent’s impacts and clash with your opponent as much as possible.
Answering your opponent's arguments in the order they're presented makes it easier for me to follow along.
Please time yourselves and have fun.
I am a parent judge and usually a blank slate. I would prefer that debaters follow through with their arguments, especially emphasizing the impacts of their arguments. I am not a fan of spreading.
Please send me your case at kaijund@yahoo.com if you like.
I look forward to listening to a good debate.
Good luck!
Hey guys!
My name is Aayushi, and I'm currently a varsity competitor in a bunch of different events. I generally know the basics for all events, so don't worry about walking me through anything. Specifically, I compete in Lincoln-Douglas, Parli, Original Advocacy, Original Oratory, and Extemp.
Introduce yourself at the beginning of the round please!
As for specific Lincoln Douglas preferences - please do not spread - or if you do so, do so clearly. Just know that I will not flow anything I do not understand or catch, because I believe that Debate is all about accurately and efficiently communicating ideas. You're not going to ever catch a lawyer in court speaking to the cadence of Rap God - because that's bad argumentation.
If there's an email chain, add me before we get started, (aayushigarg17@gmail.com) but know I won't be flowing your written case - it's only used for clarification.
For theory and kritiks - I'll hear them out, but I want to know that you understand what you're talking about. If you're reading a K you know nothing about and it shows, or is just outright wild, I won't consider it.
I'm generally truth > tech, but I'm not going to overextend myself to catch your opponent white-lying.
I need to see clash, I need to see you actually responding to your opponent's arguments, and I need to see some form of voters or you weighing out the debate.
Overall, just stay respectful, pay attention to your opponents, (yes, even during 2AR) and we'll all have a great time! We're all here voluntarily spending a weekend trying to better our public speaking, so don't make it stressful or worse than it has to be.
PS! If you make a Kendrick Lamar reference during round (that I don't cringe at), I'll give you an extra speaker point.
seva.gaskov@gmail.com - please add me to the email chain!!

Spreading
Go ahead, I am fine with high speed as long as you are clear. I will try my best to flow everything but if you're unintelligible, I can't guarantee that I will be able to hear everything.
Tech vs. Truth
I am a tabula rasa and tech judge and I will vote on whatever is on the flow as long as it's not offensive.
Policy vs. K
I am fine with most kritiks. If I don't understand what your K says, I won't vote on it, so if you run Baudrillard, explain it well.
In K aff debates, I will usually prefer neg on framework unless it's debated poorly. Also, I want you to make it clear how an aff ballot solves.
Impacts
I am fine with either big stick or soft left impacts, just make sure to prove why your impact outweighs.
T
I am fine with T debates but unless the aff is clearly abusive, I will prefer reasonability. Either way, make sure to have a lot of good evidence and comparison.
DAs
Make sure to have all parts of your DA - uniqueness, link, internal link, and impact. I will treat the takeout of any single part of the DA as the takeout of the entire disad. So if the aff proves you don't link or that your DA is non-unique, I will vote aff on the DA. Give a clear story and do impact calc to explain why your DA outweighs.
CPs
I am fine with any CPs as long as there is a net benefit. I will disallow a type of CP only if the aff proves it's bad on theory.
Theory
I will vote on any theory but explain your standards and impacts well.
Speaks
30: You did something that really impressed me and I really enjoyed listening to your speeches. I have no doubt that you will win the tournament.
29 - 29.9: You did really well and your speeches were very interesting. You will most likely win the tournament or at least get to semifinals.
28.5 - 28.9: You did well and you had good speeches that made you win. You will likely break.
28 - 28.5: You did average and there are a lot of improvements to be made. Perhaps you were not clear or your speeches were messy. You could break.
27-28: You did badly and you need a lot of improvement. I will usually not give those speaks unless I really think that you messed up really badly in your speech. You would also get those speaks if you were unintelligible or if your speech didn't make sense.
27 and less: You probably said something that was offensive and made the debate really unpleasant for either me or your opponents.
Bio: I am a graduate of and debated 4 yrs of NPDA for Point Loma Nazarene University and served as Assistant Director of Debate at Grand Canyon University. I currently serve as Head Coach at iLearn Academy and still judge around the NPDA circuit.
Updated LD Philosophy: I enjoy and can keep up with spreading. But this quick whisper-mumbling stuff is nonsense. If you think a. that's really spreading b. what you're saying is intelligible, you're kidding yourself. You can go fast but you gotta up the clarity. Forcing me to read all of your cards instead of listening to the speech to understand is asking me to do way too much work and I must infer any analysis being given. It also makes it significantly harder for me to understand the nuances of how the arguments interact and I would prefer not to miss something important.
TL;DR: I strongly believe that I don't have any strong beliefs when it comes to debate rounds, I ran all types of arguments and faced all types of arguments. I see every round as an individual game and don't try to leverage my preferences into my decisions. Go for what you will. I won't complain.
Speed: Speed is usually fine depending on your clarity. I have more comments about it in the LD section. Online, depending on how fast you are maybe 80% is better in case you want me to get everything.
Theory/Framework: These are fine. I include this to say, that I don't mind your squirrely or K aff, but I'm more than willing to listen to the other side and you should be prepared to respond to framework or theory.
K's: K's are great. K's have a place in debate. I enjoy K's because I believe I can learn from them. The only issue is I am not great at being strong on critical literature bases. I believe that people who resent that type of debate altogether are stuck in an ultimately noneducational way of thinking. That being said, I'm not afraid to vote on "this doesn't make any sense". Just because it's a game doesn't mean it shouldn't be accessible.
I will say if I had to choose between the 2 I'd rather have a straight-up policy round.
CP: Just do it right if you're gonna do it? idk the goal is not to get permed right?
Condo: I don't see condo as an issue. I won't forbid myself from voting for condo bad if it's argued for well enough or the strategy really is being that abusive. Some people have ideologies, but I think that's more of a meme at this point.
I am not a big fan of RVI's at all. I will only look to vote for one if it was unresponded to or within a unique context. But my least favorite and seemingly most common is spending X amount of minutes on a frivolous T, then saying you deserve the win for wasting your own time. If it is truly frivolous then either they won't go for it or they'll lose on it if they do. I will not reward it and I find it surprising at the number of judges who don't think twice about it.
Speaker points: I'm not a fan of speaker points so I plan on being a bit of a point fairy

Novices, remember these things:
Do line by line. Try to answer your opponents' arguments in the order they made them.
Extend your offense first. This means if you're aff, extend your advantages first. If you're neg, extend your disadvantages first. Defense (responding to your opponents' offense) comes later.
I have found two extremes with evidence. In half of the debates I judge, cards get forgotten. In the other half, cards are overemphasized and rebuttals are referring to cites instead of making the actual argument. Remember to find a balance where you explain your arguments, but refer to authors to support your arguments.
Understand the arguments you are making. I understand it's easy to read the files your varsity teammates gave you, but really try to understand, please.
Ask questions!

I am an attorney by trade but do not have any formal debate experience other than judging rounds at several tournaments when my daughter has competed. I will as much as possible allow the debaters to run whatever they wish to run in accordance with the tournament rules but recognize that if you spread (when not allowed) I am not going to try to follow you and likely will drop you, especially if you continue that throughout the round (again when not allowed by the rules). Even if you don't think it is technically spreading if you go faster than I can track then I will miss a lot of what you present and your brilliance will disappear into the ether.
Part of the skill developed through this activity is to know your audience.
I am not a full on flow judge but over time have gotten more used to tracking the flow but the winner isn't likely going to be the person who made 7 weaker and less connected or well structured points versus the person that better established their contentions and in LD connected this to their value and value criteria framework.
My personal opinion on spreading is that those who don't spread should have a chance to enjoy this activity and not be outcast from it or be forced to learn to spread in the same way athletes feel compelled to take steroids which ruin their body to compete at the highest level of sport. Spreading destroys the practical value of this educational experience by coverting it into more of a verbal game than a true clash of ideas. In the real world, spreading has no practical applications. I have argued cases at the trial court and appellate court levels and can assure you that the leaned judges and justices would not take too kindly to someone verbally assaulting an argument at them at 300 words per minute.
Also, I strongly prefer quality over quantity. I will appreciate novel arguments and you can run whatever you want as long as you can properly connect it to the topic and make it understandable to me. But if you run something completely off topic that doesn't even fit the topic, you will have with me a much higher burden to demonstrate how this is both appropriate, fair, just (procedurally and substantively) and you will need to give me a clear and concise road map in plain English why it links and how your impacts and evidence prevail. Also, I do weigh quality of arguments so if your answer to everything is that the world could explode if (fill in the blank topic isn't resolved or negated) you'd better have a strong compelling and supported grounds why I need to go back home and build a bunker. If the opposing side completely fails to respond I'll account for that but if you run a case on ridiculous impacts and your opponent does a reasonable job of rebutting the logical fallacies of this and then wins on the points that are sanguine to the topic they will prevail. I am not keen on arguments that are too cute by half (do not really address the topic and are either a form of gaming the topic in an unfair way or that border on abuse). That doesn't mean I won't allow whatever the rules allow but rather that you will bear the burden to SLOWLY and METHODICALLY explain what your (to me) obscure conception is with your verbal words and not just buried in a 50 page dense written text. I am not very experienced with plans but know what a plan inclusive counterplan is (so explain your plan or PIC slowly and clearly (walk me through it step by step). Do not assume I will read a 60 page 8 pica sized case during the round while you speak 300 words per minute!). I am not very familiar with theory but will follow the logical connections you make as I would a legal argument. Have fun and good luck!

Tech always over truth.
I flow C/X, but it's up to you to use C/X in your speeches.
Speed is great, but be clear. Please slow down for analytics and blocks; I can't always catch all of it.
I'm biased towards DA/CP debate over T or the K.
For the K: I'm a firm believer in weighing the advantages of the hypothetical implementation of the plan against the impacts of the links. For framework I'm biased towards fairness over education.
For the K Aff: On framework, fairness > education. Please explain your advocacy to me like I don't know anything about it, because I don't.
Peninsula 2025.
Conditionality is good.
The negative should disprove the desirability of the affirmative. Case specific strategies will result in higher speaker points and a greater chance at victory. Process counterplans and generic framework critiques are not ideal and will be an uphill battle.
In particular, critiques should make sense in a world where the plan happens. Framework should not be employed as a procedural violation to invalidate the entirety of the 1AC.
The affirmative should prove the desirability of the resolution. In other words, not a big fan of critical affirmatives.
Peninsula '25 (hopefully) Yale, Harvard, or Stanford '29 (definitely)

Do impact calc or I will obviously and visibly flip a coin while staring at you, immediately submitting my ballot following that. You cannot prove a connection between these two things.
Not voting on something I didn't see happen in-round. This includes not disclosing past 2NRs.
+0.5 speaker points for a well-maintained wiki. Let me know if you think you meet that criteria.
CX open + binding, spreading good--this isn't a midwest local (hopefully)
Clipping is an auto-win--just not for you.
Truth > Tech insofar as I will probably try to subconsciously rationalize a ballot for arguments I think are better.
CONDO. It's good, have never gone for condo in 4 years as a 2A, but you can win it's bad--some stuff if you're getting curbstomped on substance and want a cop-out:
If the aff can prove the neg constructed the 1nc in such a way that it was impossible to respond to, i.e. contradictory condo, I'll eagerly vote on it.
2NC counterplanning out of straight turns is annoying and cowardly but you can probably justify it. Aff should straight turn in the 1AR, not 2AC to prevent this. Also, usually it often screws with their offense so be on the lookout.
Number of off doesn't really change how chill I am with conditional advocacies unless your interps make it such--doesn't meet the counterinterp, or the debate comes down to like 1 CP, 1 K vs 3 condo or some numerical comparison where the debate comes down to the merits of that one extra advocacy.
I can tell if you're going for it because you're losing everywhere else and want to turn the debate into a coinflip- I get it, but is substance really that unwinnable for you? Will probably lower your speaks if you go for it as a cop-out but doesn't consciously affect the decision itself.
Have a real interp in the 2AC. Once saw a shell that was "Condo strat skew research dispo solves" and I reconsidered my involvement in this activity. Please, make it well thought-out and intricate in the constructive if you want to have a shot at winning with a blown up 2ar.
K Affs:
I really wanna see a topical K aff debated well. I'm talking Atticus Glen style arguments. High skill floor, but I'll be impressed and give you high speaks if you can pull it off effectively.
Reconsider reading a planless aff in middle school/novice year, but for these debates:
Fairness is an impact and will be unless "just an internal link" is literally dropped
Aff should impact turn neg standards. Your C/I almost never solves their offense and the Limits DA is fire
Very sympathetic to the argument that the only thing my ballot can do is decide who won on a technical level, and convincing me otherwise in the face of competent debating is an uphill battle
Counterplans:
Significantly less convinced of neg's pleas for absurd counterplans on Fiscal Redistribution. Go for the Econ DA! Debate the case!
The Aff should go for theory more. Probably like 70/30 aff in most instances with a well-crafted interp (multi-level fiat, international, multi-actor, honey) (Side Note: Interp's really important. "Process CPs are bad" probably isn't one, "consult CPs bad" probably is.
Send permtexts. It's time-consuming and hard to think under the pressure of a huge 1nc, but competition is a great way out of a debate where you may have zilch against a new process counterplan, and I just enjoy these debates if done well (or competently given it's middle school)
Functional + Textual competition is weird to me. Why not just go for theory instead of making up a new way counterplans compete? Smart perms are fun to see, but seem intuitively bad for neg offense and debate in general.
Offsets is obviously not competitive if they don't have "increase fiscal redistribution" in the plantext. Counterplans compete with the Aff, not the topic--if they're not the topic, go for T!
Taxes PIC competition is 50/50. Aff should have a deficit or be prepared for the Perm do the CP debate.
Universality PICs are... hard. It feels bad to give the Aff subsets, but also probably unbeatable if the neg goes for a PIC? Maybe the solution is just to read social security, idk.
I have a higher standard for advantage CP planks than most. The Aff obviously gets new 1AR answers to planks not substantiated with a piece of evidence if not written out in excruciating detail. If Eagan LS would have read your CP, reconsider.
DA:
DAs are pretty good on this topic, for the first time in forever. You could probably beat every universal BI or JG aff on Econ DA + case--and high speaks if you do.
Contextualizing the link will do wonders. Super hard to justify a neg ballot when your explanation and spin doesn't go beyond the generic 1NC card. If you don't have any specific links, then spin like it's goddamn ballet and go for gold
Rider DAs one of the only probably illegit ones. The best interp of fiat is one where the consequences of the Aff are focused on, not any extraneous BS.
Horsetrading is arguable- it's based on the consequences of passing the plan and the plan alone absent some sort of weird attatchment to it but nobody writes these DAs anymore so who really cares
K:
As the meta moves away from substantively engaging the Aff, I get less and less amendable to neg framework pushes. You don't even have a link to the Aff--you've gone for FW as offense. These often contradict the links, as well--if the aff makes it less likely, but it's also antiblack, isn't it good to prevent antiblack violence?
FW: Aff probably gets the plan but that doesn't mean it's all that matters--best interp is probably that aff has to defend reps but gets to use the consequences of the plan as a justification for them. Neg gets reps links but has to explain why it outweighs the plan's consequences. Both sides agree you can't sever representations from justifications so it comes down to case debate. K debate is case debate!
Perm seems very hard to beat on this topic. When the Aff boxes you into "giving poor people money bad" you're in the wrong parts of the library for debating in front of me.
Alt's super important and people don't put much thought in anymore--go for the perm if it solves the impacts to the K, not the links because double bind becomes real. Alt bad must be a part of the 2ar--"case outweighs" gets you nowhere against competent teams.
Author indicts are gonna need to be impacted out because 20 "deleuze is a pedophile" cards or whatever doesn't really amount to much substantive offense.
Psycho's probably bs. Will be easier to prove I should reject it for unfalsifiability than not.
T:
Very hard to convince me debatability is all that matters with competent precision/predictability explanation by the aff. Predictable limits, precision prerequisite to ground, etc. are all pretty damn convincing and predictability outweighs is generally the aff's best bet.
Not very many reasonable T violations on this topic.
Lean neg on T courts for debatability reasons given there's 0 lit on either side.
Reasonability is just the argument your c/i solves enough of their limits DA that the predictability DA outweighs--explain it more like that instead of "1% risk we solve any of their offense is AUTO AFF BALLOT BECAUSE SUBSTANCE CROWD OUT!"
Non-resolutional procedurals should lose to infinite regress.
Feel free to ask about the decision- I encourage it. It's really helpful for growth to understand how you could have improved your speech and even more so to actually do it (redos!).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OLD:
I will never vote for the quid pro quo counterplan. Under any circumstances.
I will drop you for using mac. Non-negotiable.
Firm believer in all disciplines being equal- besides mental evaluation it must also be physical- post-round you will physically combat the other team (or because of online debate challenge them to a clash royale match) to determine speaker points and I will give the winner a piece of chocolate- this also means I am persuaded by a challenge of a physical confrontation in the 1ac in order to determine the ballot.
My memory isn't great so please recite every piece of evidence you would like to extend word-for-word
If I see a plantext, auto L and 25 speaks
Condo is bad. Negation theory ONLY justifies the squo
Vagueness is almost always good- if I can't understand what the aff or alt does by the end of the round that motivates a ballot not to mention the strategic benefits
Ground and Grounds is the same word
Truth > Tech- I do not flow and will be evaluating the debate purely based on cards
RVIs are very persuasive- requires significant negative investment to convince me not to vote on it and that time investment just proves skew further
I will not disclose personal moral beliefs- however if you violate any it will make it almost impossible to vote for you
Trump won the election. Take from that what you will. "Biden solves" will result in a 25 and auto-loss.
Do not look me in the eyes during cross-ex- I will view it as a challenge of my authority and any maggots who dare gaze into the void will be consumed
Argue with the other team after the round to determine my decision- look to pf grand cross for an example
Feeding into the previous vagueness point- this applies to speaking too- I will believe you if you say you finished a card unconditionally and accusations of clipping will be punished
My _ key is broken- please do not say any word with an _ in it or I will not be able to flow it and be irritated
Make an obscure reference to (insert unknown debater) for 0.1 extra speaks!
Please warn me when you're about to start the speech with a 10 second countdown and get verbal confirmation by everyone in the room individually that they're ready for you to start- it's important everyone is ready.
Will evaluate arguments either team asserts as dropped as made even if unintelligble earlier
Please pronounce all punctuation verbally- it prevents me from flowing effectively if you do not.
I generally disclose if you want me to. Same with speaks. The exception is if you just annihilated a strug in front of his family, then I might be a bit bashful about recounting the carnage in front of them. In any case, do not try and goad me into disclosing.
I've judged a non-trivial but non-staggering amount of bid tournaments (30?) and both college parliament nationals over the last few years. I have an MA in rhetoric and critical theory and was an engineer before that so if your argument makes sense I will understand it. That said, you still have to conduct the round as if you actually want me to "learn" your case/evidence - you've read it; I have not.
Important: I have a background in public speaking and performance so I am more susceptible than most to a well-executed perceptual debate. Be generous yet fearless in cross-ex and really sell your rebuttal speeches. It matters. (Hint: leaning on phrases like "This is going to be damning" or "My opponent makes a HUGE MISTAKE" are not very compelling to me.)
Two of your speeches should end with a numbered list of reasons why you are winning. Negs, both speeches should end this way.
I always prefer creativity, originality and depth of argument over spreading and feverish flow-coverage. I am not afraid to give you speaks below 25, I just rarely see someone that unprepared or rude. The frequency with which 30s are given shocks me.
All that said, I have no agenda. It is YOUR debate. If you are hard-working and quick-thinking I want you to do well! Be polite and argue in a way and for a position that I want to vote for!
I would prefer if you added me to the email chain: jinuleonam@gmail.com
I am a sophomore at Palos Verdes Peninsula High school who has debated starting in middle school.
Please disclose at least 20 minutes before the round if there is evidence of bad disclosure I will be more sympathetic to theory
General information for rounds: Open cross is fine just don't talk over your partner, spreading is cool but don't sacrifice clarity for speed, always tech>truth in debates I will vote on literally any argument (Death K, Spark, Impact turning Ks) this does not mean I endorse the arguments. Extending an argument is not just saying the tag but fully re-explaining all parts of it.
Please give an order at the top of a speech and signpost
I really enjoy watching you clash with your opponent's arguments and compare evidence meaningfully
Don't assume I understand all your jargon, explain arguments well
I'm fine with sass cursing etc to an extent (please don't be racist, sexist, homophobic)
Cross ex: please be respectful of everyone if you are overly aggressive you will lose speaks and credibility
T: I will only vote on T if you make a specific argument with examples of in-round abuse. Out of the impacts on T I am generally most persuaded by fairness (this applies for framework against K affs as well). Please fully extend Interp violation standards and voters don't just scream they dropped ez dubs.
CP: When reading abusive CPs (certain process cps, annoying PICs that steal offense, technical pseudo net benefits) I will become much more sympathetic to theory and intrinsic perms against that CP so be careful. I generally am not convinced by condo would not recommend going for it unless there was clear abuse or it was dropped.
DA: Nothing special here just make sure your link work is strong. Impact comparison is underutilized in the last speeches. Fully extend links impacts I link through the entire debate.
K: I will not consider Ks if you don't explain the link work well. When running your kritik please explain everything clearly if I don't hear a link specific to the aff or I have no idea what the alt does I will not vote. Avoid spamming buzz words especially when answering cross ex it shows you don't understand your own kritik.
K - Affs: I am biased against them but if you believe in your cause and show clear understanding and care you might win me over.
Speaks: Innovative or funny arguments are good and I will give you extra speaks for creativity
If you teach me a chess gambit for black side that I do not already know +0.1 speaks.
(he/him); armangiveaway@gmail.com
Debated for four years at Peninsula
Currently at UC Berkeley (not debating) studying plant biology and data science
If I can't understand you I'll stop flowing. Don't expect me to compensate from the doc - I usually don't look at those until the end of the debate. Stay on the safe side and be clear even if it means sacrificing speed.
You must read your rehighlightings if you want me to evaluate them.
General notes: the rebuttals should be like an RFD, you need to explain a way in which I can feel comfortable voting for you while also taking into account your opponents offense. Please don't just extend arguments from your constructives but also interact with your opponents claims. Debate is either a game or shapes subjectivity or both, who cares. Either way, please don't say offensive things.
Plan-less affs: Please don't. But if you must I prefer if they be contextualized to the topic. If you're reading something complicated, I need a solid enough explanation in the round that's sufficient for me to understand what the argument you're going for is. Obviously T is the most intuitive argument against these positions and you should certainly go for it if you want to. I find that impact turning T is the best way to go if you're aff. Fairness is an impact. I also really like seeing contextualized and well researched Ks and PIKs against these sorts of affs. If you have one, don't be afraid to go for it.
Soft-left affs: I think they're great. You need a compelling argument for why I should shift away from the delusional impact weighing assumptions that policy debate has normalized. CPs that solve the aff are probably the best neg strat.
T v. plan: Don't really have any unusual thoughts on T. Go for it if you must. I have a limited experience going for or judging it but as long as you debate it well you should be fine.
K: I enjoy these, and I have found myself primarily going for them as I matured as a debater. I like specific critiques. If I listened to your 2NC in a vacuum and I didn't know what 1AC you were responding to then that's a problem so make sure to do the contextual work here to really impress me.
Framework for the K: I'm inclined to evaluate debates through an offense-defense paradigm. It's your job to show that the assumptions made in the 1AC implicate aff solvency/truth claims.
If you're aff in front of me and you're choosing between impact turning or link turning the links, you should impact turn unless you have a good reason not to. I find teams tend to be more successful in front of me doing the former.
Theory: you need in round abuse to go for it. I love theory 2ARs against really abusive CPs. It's probably your best way out. I think i'm pretty charitable to condo 2ARs.
Thoughts on competition: I don't default to judge kick and I don't think "the status quo is always a logical option" is a particularly good model since it invites loads of judge intervention. If you go for a CP and the aff has offense to the CP that outweighs the offense the neg has forwarded then i'm voting aff. Same goes for the alt.
I have a lower bar for aff victory on the perm than most people I know. The role of the perm is to prove that all of the plan and some of the CP/Alt could plausibly happen and not trigger the DA. As long as I reasonably believe this to be true, then i'm voting aff. I don't think the aff needs to win a 'net benefit' to the perm bc that makes the perm no longer about competition and warps it into some sort of advocacy that the aff could go for which isn't what I believe the perm to be.
LD Note: You can probably skip the part of the AC where you define all the words in the res. Not a fan of tricks.
The following paradigm was written a couple years ago but still rings true, however I want to preface that I've been out of the loop since 2019, so if there are any new catch-words or jargon I may not be completely on top of that, just so you know!
Former Debater, 4 years, am familiar with both lay and circuit styles of PuFo and LD, and I prefer a style that lies somewhere in the middle (probably a little closer to lay, if I'm being honest). If you construct a superior logical and rhetorical argument than your opponent and effectively communicate that to me, you're going to win the debate. I weight framework heavily, especially in LD. Tie everything back to what you're asking me to weigh the round on for the best results.
I'll be flowing the debate but don't expect me to weigh the debate on an issue if you don't touch on that issue during your final speech. Use the first three speeches to win the debate, use the last speech to tell me WHY you won the debate.
Don’t pref me if you don’t read a plan and care about winning.
It is true that every debater enters a two hour round wanting to win, and any argumentation otherwise will result in an immediate vote for the opponents in the spirit of unfairness, because you have just said that you do not want to win.
"When debaters walk in the room, they expect the judge to render a fair decision, not to rob them of years of hard work and dedication by substituting their personal biases for the arguments presented."
I try to make my speaks normally distributed (u = 28.4, sd = 0.5).
Prep ends when email is sent.
Topicality is primarily a question of truth.
Debate is better when debaters are dressed business professional (applies to online debate).
Everything is probabilistic. You can win the full weight of a dropped argument and easily still lose the debate.
I am a parent Judge and been judging for 3 years now. I appreciate the opportunity to help and support this as a parent judge. I am however well informed of different topics, should be able to judge topics and will apply my knowledge impartially. I will try my best to flow the debate, please talk at a reasonable pace for me to judge. I will do my best to choose the right winner. Good luck to all participants.
About:
Claremont McKenna College '23 | Archbishop Mitty '19
Hi there! My name is Jon Joey (he/they) and I competed in Parliamentary, Public Forum, and Congressional Debate at the national circuit level for three years at Archbishop Mitty High School. After graduation from Mitty, I served there as an Alumni Coach for two years and personally coached the 2021 CHSSA Parliamentary Debate State Champions. I also briefly competed in National Parliamentary Debate Association tournaments in my undergraduate years and was heavily involved in the collegiate MUN circuit.
My current affiliation is with Crystal Springs Uplands School, where I am the Head Debate Coach for both the Middle and Upper Schools.
In the interest of inclusivity, if you have ANY questions about the terms or jargon that I use in this paradigm or other questions that are not answered here, feel free to shoot me an email at jtelebrico23@cmc.edu—and please Cc your coach or parents/guardians on any communication to me as a general practice!
CHSSA MS State Update for CX, LD, PF:
- Utilize full CX (and prep time, if necessary)
- Do evidence/warrant comparisons
- Weigh (Probability, Magnitude, Timeframe, Reversibility)
- DON'T gender your opponents if pronouns are not disclosed in the Tab blast, speaks will significantly lower—they is fine as a neutral pronoun
- I don't flow off speech docs and I only call for evidence if you tell me to call for it. Verifying evidence ethics is your responsibility as debaters, otherwise I defer to what's on my flow.
- Please don't mention program name during introductions—entries are coded for a reason! I likely have implicit thoughts about programs as a former competitor in CFL/Calif. Coast and I hope you'll help me check back against that
Parli Paradigm (last updated 11.09.23 for NPDI)
Important parts bolded and underlined for time constraints.
General
-
TL; DR: Debate how you want and how you know. If you need to adapt for a panel, I will meet you where you are and evaluate fairly.
- STOP stealing time in parliamentary debate! Do not prep with your partner while waiting for texts to be passed. There is no grace period in parliamentary debate—I stop flowing when your time ends on my timer. In the event of a timing error on my end, please hold up your timer once your opponent goes overtime.
-
The debate space is yours. I can flow whatever speed and am open to any interpretation of the round but would prefer traditional debate at State. Don't be mean and exclusionary. This means a low threshold for phil, tricks, etc. but I will exercise a minute amount of reasonability (speaks will tank, W/L unchanged) if you're being intentionally exclusionary towards younger/novice/inexperienced debaters (e.g. refusing to explain tricks or clarify jargon in POIs or technically framing out teams for a cheap ballot). No TKOs though, sorry.
-
Please adapt to your panel! I will evaluate as I normally do, but please do not exclude judges who may not be able to handle technical aspects of the debate round.
-
I keep a really tight flow and am tech over truth. Intervention is bad except with respect to morally reprehensible or blatantly problematic representations in the debate space—I reserve the right to exercise intervention in that case.
-
I prefer things to be framed as Uniqueness, Link, Impact but it doesn't matter that much. Conceded yet unwarranted claims are not automatic offense for you.
-
Doing impact weighing/comparative analysis between warrants is key to coming out ahead on arguments.
-
Collapse the debate down to a few arguments/issues/layers. Extend some defense on the arguments you're not going for and then go all in on the arguments that you're winning.
-
Rebuttals are also very important! The 1NR cannot be a repeat of the 2NC and the 1AR should be engaging with some of the new responses made in the block as well as extending the 2AC. Give overviews, do comparative world analysis, do strategic extensions.
- Please do not mention your program name if the tournament has intentionally chosen to withhold that information. I would also generally prefer debaters stick to "My partner and I" vs. saying something like "Mitty TK affirms."
- This paradigm is not a stylistic endorsement of one regional style of debate over another (e.g. East v. West, logical v. empirical, traditional v. progressive). Debaters should debate according to how they know how to debate—this means that I will still evaluate responses to theory even if not formatted in a shell or allow debaters to weigh their case against a K argument. There is always going to be a competitive upshot to engaging in comparison of arguments, so please do so instead of limiting your ability to debate due to stylistic frustrations and differences.
Framework
- In the absence of a weighing mechanism, I default to net benefits, defined therein as the most amount of good for the most amount of people. This means you can still make weighing claims even in the absence of a coherent framework debate. To clarify this, I won't weigh for you, you still have to tell me which impacts I ought to prioritize.
-
Framework cannot be backfilled by second speakers. Omission of framework means you shift framework choice to your opponents.
-
For CFL: Please respect trichotomy as these topics were written with a particular spirit and are meant to serve as preparation for CHSSA (should = policy, ought or comparison of two things = value, on balance/more good than harm/statement = fact)
- Any and all spec is fine.
-
Read and pass texts to your opponents.
- Epistemic confidence > epistemic modesty. Win the framework.
Counterplans
- I tend to default that CPs are tests of competition and not advocacies. Whether running the CP or articulating a perm, please clarify the status of the CP.
-
I think counterplans are super strategic and am receptive to hearing most unconventional CPs (PICs, conditional, advantage, actor, delay, etc.) so long as you're prepared to answer theory. These don't have to necessarily be answered with theory but affirmative teams can logically explain why a specific counterplan is unfair or abusive for me to discount it.
Theory
-
I'm a lot more willing to evaluate theory, or arguments that set norms that we use in debate.
-
I default to competing interps over reasonability, meaning that both teams should probably have an interp if you want to win theory. Feel free to change my mind on this and of course, still read warrants as to why I should prefer one over the other.
-
I'm slowly beginning to care less if theory is "frivolous" as my judging career progresses but, by the same token, try not to choose to be exclusionary if you're aware of the technical ability of your opponents. Inclusivity and access are important in this activity.
Kritiks
-
Kritiks are a form of criticism about the topic and/or plan that typically circumvents normative policymaking. These types of arguments usually reject the resolution due to the way that it links into topics such as ableism, capitalism, etc. Pretty receptive to these!
-
I find KvK debates quite confusing and difficult to evaluate because debaters are often not operationalizing framework in strategic ways. Win the RotB debate, use sequencing and pre-req arguments, and contest the philosophical methods (ontology, epistemology, etc.) of each K. On the KvK debate, explain to me why relinks matters—I no longer find the manslaughter v. murder comparison as sufficiently explanatory in and of itself. I need debaters to implicate relinks to me in terms of one's own framework or solvency.
-
Read good framework, don’t double turn yourself, have a solvent alternative.
-
When answering the K, and especially if you weren’t expecting it, realize that there is still a lot of offense that can be leveraged in your favor. Never think that a K is an automatic ballot so do the pre- v. post fiat analysis for me, weigh the case against the K and tell me why policymaking is a good thing, and call out their shady alternative.
-
I think that teams that want to run these types of arguments should exhibit a form of true understanding and scholarship in the form of accessible explanations if you want me to evaluate these arguments fairly but also I'm not necessarily the arbiter of that—it just reflects in how you debate.
Speaks
-
Speaker points are awarded on strategy, warranting, and weighing. As a general rule: substance > style.
-
The path to a 30 probably includes really clean extensions and explanations of warrants, collapsing, weighing.
- Any speed is fine but word economy is important—something I've been considering more lately.
- Not utilizing your full speech time likely caps you at a 28. Use the time that has been allotted to you!
-
Despite this, I am pretty easily compelled by the litany of literature that indicate speaker points reify oppression and am pretty receptive to any theoretical argument about subverting such systems.
- I don't have solid data to back this up but I believe my threshold for high speaker points for second speakers is pretty high. See above about doing quality extension and weighing work.
- Sorta unserious but I wanna judge a nebel T debate in Parli really bad—30s if you can pull it off!
-
My current speaks average aggregated across both Parli & PF is 28.7 [H/L = 30/27; n=234; last updated 09.24.23].
Points of Information/Order
-
PLEASE take at least two POIs. I don't really care how many off case positions you're running or how much "you have to get through" but you can't put it off until the end of your speech, sit down, and then get mad at your opponents for misunderstanding your arguments if you never clarified what it was in the first place. On the flip side, I won't flow POIs, so it's up to you to use them strategically.
-
Tag teaming is fine; what this looks like is up to you.
-
Call the P.O.O.—I won't protect the flow.
Fun Parli Data Stuff, inspired by GR (last updated 02.15.23):
- Rounds Judged: n = 170
- Aff Prelim Ballots (Parli): 72 (42.35%)
- Neg Prelim Ballots (Parli): 98 (57.65%)
- Aff Elim Ballots (Parli): 26 (50.00%)*
- Neg Elim Ballots (Parli): 26 (50.00%)*
Feel free to use this to analyze general trends, inform elim flips, or for your "fairness uniqueness."
*this is pretty cool to me, i guess i'm not disposed to one side or another during elims ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
For anything not covered here, feel free to find me in Parli Prep and ask me before the round!
GENERAL
1. Clarity > Loudness > Speed.
2. Framing > Impact > Solvency. Framing is a prior question. Don’t let me interpret the debate, interpret the debate for me.
3. Truth IS Tech. Warranting, comparative analysis, and clash structure the debate.
4. Offense vs Defense: Defense supports offense, though it's possible to win on pure defense.
5. Try or Die vs Neg on Presumption: I vote on case turns & solvency takeouts. AFF needs sufficient offense and defense for me to vote on Try or Die.
6. Theory: Inround abuse > potential abuse.
7. Debate is a simulation inside a bigger simulation.
NEGATIVE
TOPICALITY: As far as I am concerned, there is no resolution until the negative teams reads Topicality. The negative must win that their interpretation resolves their voters, while also proving abuse. The affirmative either has to win a no link we meet, a counterinterp followed up with a we meet, or just straight offense against the negative interpretation. I am more likely to vote on inround abuse over potential abuse. If you go for inround abuse, list out the lost potential for neg ground and why that resolves the voters. If you go for potential abuse, explain what precedents they set.
FRAMEWORK: When the negative runs framework, specify how you orient Fairness & Education. If your FW is about education, then explain why the affirmative is unable to access their own pedagogy, and why your framework resolves their pedagogy better and/or presents a better alternative pedagogy. If your FW is about fairness, explain why the affirmative method is unable to solve their own impacts absent a fair debate, and why your framework precedes Aff impacts and/or is an external impact.
DISADVANTAGES: Start with impact calculation by either outweighing and/or turning the case. Uniqueness sets up the timeframe, links set up probability, and the impact sets up the magnitude.
COUNTERPLANS: Specify how the CP solves the case, a DA, an independent net benefit, or just plain theory. Any net benefit to the CP can constitute as offense against the Permutation.
CASE: Case debate works best when there is comparative analysis of the evidence and a thorough dissection of the aff evidence. Sign post whether you are making terminal defense arguments or case turns.
KRITIKS: Framing is key since a Kritik is basically a Linear Disad with an Alt. When creating links, specify whether they are links to the Aff form and/or content. Links to the form should argue why inround discourse matters more than fiat education, and how the alternative provides a competing pedagogy. Links to the content should argue how the alternative provides the necessary material solutions to resolving the neg and aff impacts. If you’re a nihilist and Neg on Presumption is your game, then like, sure.
AFFIRMATIVES
TRADITIONAL AFFIRMATIVES
PLANS WITH EXTINCTION IMPACTS: If you successfully win your internal link story for your impact, then prioritize solvency so that you can weigh your impacts against any external impacts. Against other extinction level impacts, make sure to either win your probability and timeframe, or win sufficient amount of defense against the negs extinction level offense. Against structural violence impacts, explain why proximate cause is preferable over root cause, why extinction comes before value to life, and defend the epistemological, pedagogical, and ethical foundations of your affirmative. i might be an "extinction good" hack.
PLANS WITH STRUCTURAL IMPACTS: If you are facing extinction level disadvantages, then it is key that you win your value to life framing, probability/timeframe, and no link & impact defense to help substantiate why you outweigh. If you are facing a kritik, this will likely turn into a method debate about the ethics of engaging with dominant institutions, and why your method best pedagogically and materially effectuates social change.
KRITIKAL AFFIRMATIVES
As a 2A that ran K Affs, the main focus of my research was answering T/FW, and cutting answers to Ks. I have run Intersectionality, Postmodernism, Decolonization, & Afropessimism. Having fallen down that rabbit hole, I have become generally versed in (policy debate's version of) philosophy.
K AFF WITH A PLAN TEXT: Make sure to explain why the rhetoric of the plan is necessary to solve the impacts of the aff. Either the plan is fiated, leading a consequence that is philosophically consistent with the advantage, or the plan is only rhetorical, leading to an effective use of inround discourse (such as satire). The key question is, why was saying “United States Federal Government,” necessary, because it is likely that most kritikal teams will hone their energy into getting state links.
K BEING AFFS: Everything is bad. These affs incorporate structural analysis to diagnosis how oppression manifests metaphysically, materially, ideologically, and/or discursively, "We know the problem, and we have a solution." This includes Marxism, Settler Colonialism, & Afropessimism affs. Frame how the aff impact is a root cause to the negative impacts, generate offense against the alternative, and show how the perm necessitates the aff as a prior question.
K BECOMING AFFS: Truth is bad. These affs point to complex differences that destabilize the underlying metanarratives of truth and power, "We problematize the way we think about problems." This includes Postmodern, Intersectionality, & Performance affs. Adapt to turning the negative links into offense for the aff. Short story being, if you're just here to say truth is bad, then you're relying on your opponent to make truth claims before you can start generating offense.
I’ve been Involved with Speech and Debate since 2015, although I’ve been judging almost nonstop since 2019. Available as a judge-for-hire via HiredJudge per request.
9.9/10 if you did not receive commentary on your ballot after the tournament, you (hopefully) would get my judge email on there instead.
I don’t currently operate from a laptop so my ballot speed is not ideal atm; I’m usually typing out paragraphs from a doc until the last allowable minute, but my timing is not the most perfect. You won’t always get a pageful but its my personal policy to give a minimum of 5 sentences. If you send over an email asking about your round; it might take up to 24 hours post tournament but I -will- reply back.
_____
Ballot Style:
Where possible I add timestamps to help students pinpoint exact moments in their speech that address the issue as noted by comment.it is a personal philosophy of mine to try never have less than 5 sentences on any ballot.
Debate Philosophy: I can comfortably judge parli, LD, PF, SPAR & Congress due to judging almost nonstop since the start of the pandemic. I don't have a lot of experience with policy debate as of this writing, I’m working on understanding spread speak as I do more tournaments. [current speed: 2 notches down from the fast verse in Rap God ]
I LOVE it when students are able to be fully themselves and have fun in a round
Debate Judging: I’m not the biggest fan of utilitarian as a value metric, but otherwise I try to approach the round as a blank slate. I like hearing both Ks & Traditional Argumentation however my rfd really depends on how you use them (or inverse thereof) in the debate.
Sportsmanship (like, dont lower your performance/ be rude on purpose, please) > Argumentative Cohesion & Organization > CX utilization & Clash > Framework Discourse > Delivery > Structural Presence, but I am a little stricter on citation~ doesn’t need to be the full date but it needs gotta be there
Congress: (also see above) but I like those who can flip arguments in their favor; You dont need to be extroverted to be PO, but POs should be attentive with overall energy in the chamber and facilitating ethical and intentional inclusion beforesilence becomes a huge issue in round, in addition to strict yet -visible- timekeeping.
RFD FLOW - I try to have at least a paragraph summary explaining my flow (sometimes it’ll be copy/pasted)
Speech Judging: I can judge any speech event across all levels!
I would sincerely appreciate if students could self time so I can focus on ballots.
(For those who have read all the way through, some free interp gems that will be erased in a month, besides the basics: storyboarding, stop animation, pixar’s “inside out,” samurai jack, sound track your pieces.)
Parent Judge. No K’s, No theory, no Tricks, no K affs, basically assume that I know nothing about debate. Absolutely no spreading - I will understand nothing you say. I prioritize a debater who can articulate their thoughts and point out logical fallacies. I am truth > tech, if you sound more persuasive and can hold your own in cross you won half the battle. I prefer “reasonable” values and value critireons especially if they are paired with strong link chains. Use Jargon and flow arguments at your own risk. Impacts like Nuclear War will be weighed “fairly,” but at the risk of sounding repetetive, will not win you any points for reasonabillity.

debate at peninsula LD for three years
I don’t think an actual detail paradigm for novice ld is essential, I debate at the national circuit and have familiarity with all the progressive arguments that novice will run. I think the most important thing is remembering line by line argument your opponent made and not drop anything. You should always extend your offense first and weigh it against your opponent's offense (impact calc).
I find in many cases debater just respond to the opponent argument by simply rephrasing what their case and evidence is without any interaction (or card and evidence just completely get forgotten and never mentioned later in the round). Tell me why your evidence is better and how their evidence isn't contextualize to yours and didn't answer it. This is why reading and understanding the position and topic you read can be very helpful.
Finally please be respectful and have fun. I can and will end the round if anything inappropriate/mean/hurtful behavior happens. Debate should be logos and not ethos, I don't decide the winner of the debate by who's a better speaker or sounds smarter in cx. Feel free to ask me any question after the debate even if you think my opinion is wrong, listening to feedback is how you learn greatly.
List of thing I would really like to hear from a novice round:
- impact calc on the internal link level
- impact calc overall and specially why timeframe, possibility, or magnitude (which ever your going for) is MOST important compared to the other, and don't just talk about your impact compare it with your opponents
- case turn da or da turn case
- a good organized flow with different position on different sheet (show me at the end of round and I will boost your speaker point)
- Give me an order before speech
- going for cp correctly
- kicking out stuff when you need to and not just going for everything in your last speech
- pls just call me judge not my real name pls it feel weird
if you want to see a funny photo look at Aaron Yi paradigm
OLD STUFF:
General
Run any argument you want (except very not familiar with trick)
speed fine, slow down on analytic
Tech > Truth, but true argument easier to win
dropped argument only true if explain how it interact with debate
Speech Point
Clarity, good organization, Polite = High speaker point
aggressive and fast don't mean high speaker point
Don't be rude in cx
You not suppose to ask your opponent did you read this or what argument did you answer other then ac/nc... YOUR SUPPOSE TO FLOW
DA
less off with better link and longer card > 8 off
impact clac more then just prewritten block, be comparative, also impact clac the link vs link turn
timeframe important as it means your impact happen before other and turn
tell me what argument they didn't answer or didn't answer well that WHY that important and affect the debate
I love seeing argument about evidence comparison and what the card actually say.
Counterplan
defensive argument to solve aff and avoid da
condo might be drop debater when more then 1, anything else most likely drop argument only
I think perm most important
Kritik/Phil
I default to weighing the case, comparative world
l feel link and alt should be most important part and pls don’t forget fw debate
I think T should be read against K aff, all the other "argument" just too hard to win. Impact should be fairness
I never rlly run it myself, so there is that
Topictality
I feel interps is the most important part, caselist also important
both fairness and education important persuade me
not going to vote for rvi
Theory
in round abuse only, I might judge intervene depend on how stupid it is (ex: snoring theory auto ignore)
I think dislcousre theory is a real theory, personally I always send my 1ac file as soon as paring come out even if it 2 hour beore round. I think clash is never a bad thing.
random stuff for fun
Funny argument that stupid--------------------X real argument
sped everything----------------X----Slow down for tag
just debating-X-------------------trying to talk to judge to make them like you at lay tournament
Spreading is fine as long as you're clear, still fairly new to judging, currently debating mostly substance, not too informed on K-style debates but I'll try to follow it, just explain the links very clearly and articulate the neg story. Theory and T are fine, just don't be frivolous and I generally buy drop the arg for anything except Condo. The base for speaks will be 28, +0.1 for being funny. -0.2 if you fail to be funny. I don't vote on tricks and do impact calc on the 2nr and 2ar. Tech > Truth but I don't buy fake or racist arguments, and if you run racist args you're getting the lowest speaks.
Give an order before your speeches.
Do impact calc at the top of the 2nr and 2ar- explain your args.
Don't read random blocks, contextualize your arguments for what your opponents are reading
Cameras on if tech permits.
Peninsula '23 | Emory '27 | Peninsula, OCSA
Pre-Round: Do whatever you need to do to win, my argumentative preferences marginally affect your chances at winning relative to dramatic strategic adjustments.
Top Level:
1. Tech > Truth. Flow (straight down) > evidence (preference for comprehensiveness & conclusiveness over other metrics, but amenable to judge instruction) > intervention (unmade cross-applications, etc.). Intervention is a result of interpretive ambiguity - judge instruction, warrant comparison & argument implication minimize this.
*Won't intervene or reject arguments automatically, but amenable to argumentative clarity objections to a punitive tech > truth model. Embedded theory arguments, floating PIKs & argumentative extrapolations not clearly based in evidence justify entirely new answers.
2. Topic knowledge for fiscal redistribution is medium-high. I've judged a lot of debates and am involved with Peninsula but moreso in strategy than research.
3. Clash is good. Demonstrate topic knowledge, consolidate the debate early & read more evidence. You will 'have my heart' & be rewarded with speaker points. This is my only 'strong' opinion and frames the rest of my thoughts about who 'should' win a debate.
Content:
1. Topicality. Affs designed around clash-avoidance should lose to T, but otherwise, going for T is susceptible to reasonability.
2. Counterplans. Better for the aff on theory & competition than most. The aff should center reasons the counterplan doesn't answer the 1ac / is anti-educational & the neg should center fairness in their defense. Impact calculus & interpretive integrity (clarity regarding what counterplans are included / excluded) matter.
3. Disads. The link often matters more than uniqueness (think: a 40% chance of Biden winning in the status quo is still a 40% risk of extinction if the link is true). Narrative coherence & try or die matter.
4. Kritiks. Preference for at: case outweighs is answer the case > util k > alt solves > framework. Aff answers to framework need to center a defense of a model of debate (vs. clash) or a unique impact intrinsic to topicality (vs. fairness). Good for both debate good + clash & no link to debate bad + fairness.
5. LD. Relatively new to judging & exclusively competed in policy. No objection to substantive philosophy, but lack institutional memory. 'Tricks' are terrible for clash and unlikely to prove successful in front of me, especially given this activity's issue with clarity & argumentative incoherence (won't flow off the doc).

Novices/middle schoolers, please remember these things: [Devin Lai]
Additionally, please time yourselves and respect speech times.
Please feel encouraged to ask questions about the decision after the round.
Debate is a game -- please be kind and have fun.

Tech over truth dropped arguments are presumed to be true, but I do believe that true arguments are easier to defend.
Simplicity is good. The more complex an argument is, the more explanation is needed beyond it's "dropped" or tag line extensions.
Truthfully, not the best flow in the community so would like you to slow down on analytics especially if not in the doc.
Hiding theory is cowardice. You can and might win but speaks = nuked
Every argument needs a claim, warrant, impact. If it's missing any one of the 3 components, I reserve the right to not vote on it.
For every min of prep you don't use I will give 0.1 of extra speaks up to a cap of 29.5.
You should debate as if I have 0 understanding of the topic
I find myself somewhat expressive during the debate. Feel free to use that to your advantage.
Tech over truth. But below are my predispositions. They can all be changed by technical debating but I find myself being convinced easier if debaters abide by said predispositions.
Anything is game. No args are off limits. Whether it's egregious impact turns or stupid theory arguments. But arguments about personal issues or issues outside of debate is off limits.
Fairness is likely an impact.
Condo is good.
Process CPs are bad but likely hard to win absent a good answer to arbitrariness.
Reasonability is bad.
Inserting rehighlightings is NOT ok.
Predictability > debatability
Debates and characterizations of ev > ev quality itself
Timeframe matters, determines directionality of turns case.
PIKs are probably bad but likely theoretically justifiable against a K aff. (went for this a decent bit)
Plan text in a vacuum is stupid.
Familiarity with arguments
Policy stuff all fine. Not a big fan of politics.
Turns case is as probable as the rest of the DA. If DA is 1% and turns case is dropped, it net values to 1% so the aff weighs 99% of the aff vs 1% of the DA.
Not a fan of complex theory debates other than T.
Adv CPs + impact turns are my favorite 2NRs in high school.
Ks are fine. Although it's best if the FW interpretation allows your opponents to weigh the plan because it's defense not offense. If you win FW without a link to the 1AC then I still vote aff on presumption. If you are spreading analytics on FW straight down, please save pen time. Winning case is a good idea proves education about case is good.
K aff vs T --- I find myself more aff leaning then people would imagine. I believe the only real internal link for the neg is predictability. Even that internal link is arbitrary and likely can't solve. K affs that just call T or whatever the neg does microaggressions will find a hard time succeeding in front of me. K affs that undercut the neg's internal links to fairness by indicting legal precision or predictability could be very successful.
I believe PIKs, creative impact turns, or counter advocacies are also ways to negate K affs.
LD
God forbid I ever judge LD but if I do, please stay as far away as possible from Phil or Tricks.
Middleschool:
Clarity > speed
Flow
Don't steal prep
I am a Debate coach at Loyola High School. I primarily coach LD debate.
I see debate as a game of strategy. The debaters are responsible to define the rules of the game during the debate.
This means that debaters can run any argument (i.e. frameworks, theory, kritiks, disadvantages). I will assess how well the debaters frame the arguments, weigh the impacts, and compare the worlds of the Aff and Neg.
However, I am not a blank slate judge. I do come into the round with the assumption of weighing the offense and defense and determining which world had the more comparatively better way of looking at the round.
As for Speakers' points, I assess those issues based upon:
1. How well the speakers spoke to the room including vocal intonation, eye contact, posture.
2. I also look for the creativity of the argument and strategy.
High Speaker Points will be awarded to students who excel in both of these areas.
Debaters are always welcome to ask me more questions about my paradigm before a round begins. The purpose of debate is educational as well as competition. So, debaters should feel comfortable to interact with me before and after the round about how to do well in the round and after.
