PF Judges Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show Hidehi everyone! i'm pearl berzin and i'm one of the captains of the pf debate team at newton south and i've been debating for four years!
pronouns: she/her
email: pearlesd23@gmail.com
facebook: pearlberzin
before i give preferences i just want to remind y'all that debate is all about having fun and learning, so remember that during the round! also don't feel any pressure to tailor your speaking to me; do what you feel comfortable with!
preferences:
speed is ok, but if you plan on spreading, send me a speech doc and ask your opponents if they're ok with it.
i’m not flowing your card names, so saying something like “flow through Smith 22” and not explaining the argument is not a good strategy if you want me to understand your arg.
i will pay attention to cross, so please don't be rude! however, i won't evaluate it in my decision.
i expect all turns to be frontlined in 2nd rebuttal.
PLEASE COLLAPSE! my flow and your narrative get way too confusing if you don't.
nothing new in either final focus.
WEIGH! please don't make me try to weigh the arguments in my head.
if you are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc, i will give you the LOWEST speaks possible.
try not to stress! y'all are going to do great and i'm excited to see what you can do :)
if you have any questions about my paradigm or rfd, pls reach out!
p.s. if you bring me snacks or reference taylor swift in a speech, i will give you +1 speaker point
Email chain: 23bharadwaja@abschools.org if you want
Junior at Acton-Boxborough.
tech > truth
will vote on anything, but make sure its warranted
defense isn't sticky, extend it pls
I prefer collapsing in 2nd rebuttal
have fun, don't get so heated lol
Novices: extend, warrant, and weigh, make voting easy for me
if there is no path to the ballot for either side, I default to whoever lost the flip
I'll only look at ev if someone tells me to, otherwise idrc, the warranting is more important anyway
tell me a joke that makes me laugh before your round and ill give you plus 1 speaks. I give everyone 29s and 30s unless I deadass can't understand you.
Hi Im Laura and I'm a third year public forum debater at Newton South High School.
You can talk fast but don't spread or else I won't flow what you say and don't start off a speech really quickly. Don't say anything racist, sexist, transphobic, etc. If you have to provide a trigger warning then maybe try to not run it or at least have a backup case. If you go too long over time for speeches I'm either going to not flow what you say or just not listen. Cross: I pay attention to crosses but don't flow them. Be nice. If something important is brought up say it again in a speech or else I won't remember it. Rebuttal: A logic rebuttal or logic responses are totally fine. If your frontlines are going to be "this doesn't make sense, they don't warrant this, no card or evidence" most times I'm not going to flow it because if it really doesn't make sense I won't count it in general. I like overviews and I think they are very helpful in the round. Don't just read blocks from your block file, and try to implicate every block. Don't card dump. Summary: Please collapse on one argument although I'm a flow judge, still create a narrative and story for your side. If you say something in final focus that was unextended during summary, I will not flow it. The same goes for new responses after first summary. Final focus: You can bring up a new weighing mechanism but again, no new responses. Off-time road maps are fine, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't signpost. I might look at some cards at the end of the round if there is a debate about specific evidence or how important it is. For me probability and urgency weighing are the most important. You don't need to weigh off of scope, it just takes away from your time, and I know when a number is bigger than another. At the end of the day, I would like for it to be pretty easy for me to vote for someone and not do much work so please weigh, and if possible try to meta weigh. Also just because one team is second speaking, doesn't mean they have the last words. I disclose unless I'm told otherwise. You can be sarcastic, or make funny jokes, it makes the debate more fun for everyone. If you make a joke thats actually going to make me laugh ill add 0.5 to your speaker points, otherwise, its highly unlikely anyone will get below a 28.
Hey! My name is Zey and I am a freshman in college. I have debated at Newton South for three years, so I’m a flow judge. Don’t say anything problematic and be nice and we should be fine. Failure to do so = report to tab and instant L. I don't know much about this topic so please signpost it makes it easier to flow. Weighing earlier is always good, however, one good weighing > 3 different weighing mechs that you had 5 seconds to explain.
MORE INFO: Case: Tech > Truth, I'll vote for anything if its warranted well Cross: I don't care abt cross, won’t vote on it, if u wanna bring up anything do it in a speech Ev: Paraphrasing is meh, do it if you have too. I'll call an important evidence at the end of the round if its a big deal Rebuttal: Please warrant out every response and signpost clearly, 2nd Rebuttal should frontline completely Summary: Extend everything you want the round to revolve around, if you read a turn, weigh it or it's not going to be offense, please don't extend ur entire case + 4 turns with 0 weighings, makes the round messy. Final: Should mirror summary, don't include new things in your final speech, don't bring up new weighing or responses. Please don't run Theory or K.
First time paranet. judge.
speak SLOWLY
Ethan (he/him) - etc.ethancheng@gmail.com.
Generally speaking, I love debate, and I think debating about things is good. If you do anything to make me not like debate (being any sort of -ist or preventing your opponents from engaging in the round ) it's an auto 20L.
If you want my thoughts/advice on anything debate related, feel free to ask. On another note, if you have any paradigm questions, come early to ask or email me.
Debate however you want stylistically, I enjoy all kinds of debate. But here's a general guide to how I will evaluate rounds.
Tech > Truth: As a self-proclaimed lay demon, truer arguments are simpler to explain and do resonate more with most judges. However, what is considered true in a round I'm evaluating is dictated by the more technical side of things.
Second rebuttal needs to frontline. My threshold for finessing frontlines in the backhalf is fairly high so it needs to be in 2nd.
Evidence: I care about evidence quality, y'all should know what blatant exploitation looks like. I also like good analytics! No matter how much evidence someone has, there's always more than enough room for logical responses and I prefer hearing them when done well.
If you want me to check back against evidence abuses, tell me to call for it in-round.
Weighing wins you rounds: If arguments aren't weighed, I can't evaluate the argument without intervening.
Cross concessions matter, but only if you bring them up. I will not flow cross nor pay attention to it.
I will disclose who I voted for unless there's a rule against it. If you don't want a verbal RFD, I get it - there will always be at least some explanation on the ball.
Post-round/ask questions. Doing so is educational, holds judges accountable, and makes debate more transparent. Being upset is fine, just don't make it personal.
I'm Kassra, a senior from Newton South
Pretty regular flow judge nothing out of the ordinary
Tech>Truth don't lose the flow
Feel free to ask me questions before the round!
Speed is fine, but if you do send a speech doc/ask opponents if they're ok with it
I will stop flowing if you're 30+ seconds overtime
Don't just use only buzzwords, warrant as well
I won't vote off of cross but I will pay attention and take into account things from cross that are mentioned in speeches
Be sure to Signpost, warrant, and implicate EVERYTHING. Don't just assert evidence, explain it otherwise its hard to vote on if your opponents point it out
Actually compare evidence, don't just respond to evidence with more evidence
WEIGH Good pre-reqs is the easiest way to get me to vote for you. Start weighing in second rebuttal tho
Extend offense through every speech otherwise i can't vote off of it
DEFENSE ISNT STICKY, bring up defense in every speech otherwise its dropped
Pls don't bring up new stuff in Final Focus, its very annoying
Theory/K's I have a basic understanding and will do my best to evaluate it but I don't really like it
Don't be racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. no.
Most importantly HAVE FUN!!
--------Bonus Points--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+.5 if you make a good reference to Star Wars in speech
+.5 if you do a who..... asked? joke in grand cross
I am a lay judge. I like teams that are persuasive and knowledgeable in the topic area. Thanks.
Hi! I am currently a senior at Newton South and have done PF for four years. A couple things:
1. Please don't say "just a quick off time road map." Please.
2. In rebuttal, the second speaking team should frontline turns. Not required, but I like when teams collapse in second rebuttal.
3. I don't just care that your card says something—explain to me why it says that.
4. PLEASE WEIGH! Make my decision easy by telling me why your argument is more important.
5. I can't vote for you if in your second half speeches you aren't extending a warrant and an impact (and weighing and frontlining). Please please collapse.
6. I don't like theory and will probably evaluate it wrong. Would *strongly* advise against running it.
7. Make me laugh and I'll boost your speaks:) If you are mean to your opponents, expect your speaks to reflect that.
Let me know if you have any questions! Excited to judge!
I debated for Acton-Boxborough! Msg me on fb or email me if you have any questions before the round.
My email: aliciaogu186@gmail.com
Pronouns: she/her
tldr: I’ll vote for the team that wins the best weighed offense in the round, quality > quantity. Other than that, just debate however you feel most comfortable! I’m a pretty average flow judge.
General stuff:
- Frontline in second rebuttal
- Defense is sticky in first summary
- Theory and Ks are fine but explain everything like I'm 5 (I don't have much experience debating prog args)
- Spreading is okay if you send a speech doc, but if you're not speaking comprehensibly your speaks will be affected
- I won't flow cross but it is binding, so bring up any concessions in a speech
- Have all your cards ready; if you can’t find a card within a couple minutes I’ll just drop the ev
- Please time yourselves (and don't cheese prep time)
Things that I don't like:
- Offensive overviews/DAs
- Rude comments
- Racism/sexism/homophobia etc. (you will lose the round immediately)
Things I like:
- REAL weighing/metaweighing
- Quirky lines--make the round interesting!
- I love sassiness but keep it fun and fresh
- Bring me something yummy and I'll give you 30s
Hi, I'm Natalie! I'm a freshman at Harvard, and I debated PF for four years at Newton South. I am a flow judge, but sometimes I flow in my head.
Preferences
- I won’t vote for theory
- No spreading (I won’t read speech docs, I only flow what I hear and understand)
- I like clearly explained warrants and thorough comparative analysis
- I don’t like blippy arguments and evidence or statistics that are not clearly explained
Speaks
- +0.5 speaker points if you work in a Taylor Swift reference
- -0.5 speaker points each time you're disrespectful in cross
Good luck and good debating! Let me know before the round begins if you have any questions or need any accommodations.
Hi I'm Kaveri (she/her) and I debate PF at Newton South High School :)
Email: krishnam01772@gmail.com
TLDR: framing --> weighing--> offense --> default neg
-
You need to win your offense to win the weighing
Essentially make me do as little work as possible, basically write my RFD
Basics:
-
I’m a flow judge
-
Tech>Truth
-
I hate judge intervention so please don't make me do my own analysis
-
Point out things that are conceded or dropped
-
Postrounding is fine but it’s not going to make me change my decision
-
Be respectful or your speaks get tanked
-
Any explicit bigotry will result in an L20 and a report to Tabroom.
Speed:
Please try not to go over 220 wpm or spread but if you are spreading:
1) send me and your opponents a speech doc
2) check with your opponents if it's okay with them
Evidence:
-
Don’t misconstrue evidence-- paraphrasing is fine but make sure you have good evidence ethics
-
I’ll only call cards if a team tells me to or if it is important towards my decision
[when you extend evidence, please extend the substance and not just the author name -- i value the content over just flowing the card name and date]
Cross:
-
If something important happens, bring it up in later speeches (otherwise I won't evaluate it)
-
Please don't be mean-- be respectful of your opponents
Rebuttal:
-
Signpost/tell me where you are on the flow, off-time roadmaps are ok but pls keep them concise
-
Well warranted analysis > blippy cards without warrants
-
Everything in first rebuttal needs to be frontlined in second rebuttal
Summary/FF:
-
Summary + FF should mirror each other and have the same material (NO STICKY DEFENSE IN FINAL, everything you extend in final should have been in summary)
- Everything 2nd rebuttal needs to be frontlined in first summary
-
Collapse on one argument PLEASE (quality over quantity)
-
WEIGHING is key, please don't forget
-
Don’t forget to weigh turns please, I can’t really evaluate them otherwise
-
Remember to meta-weigh (weigh the clashing weighing mechanisms)
-
Respond to your opponents weighing in the speech after it’s introduced or it goes conceded
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have any questions about my paradigm please feel free to ask me before round!
And if you have questions about my decision, please ask me as well.
Hello!
My name is Katherine Lee and I am a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania. I did Public Forum debate all four years with Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in Massachusetts and had some experience in Original Oratory in middle school.
I don't know much about speech, but I will try to follow along and judge as objectively as possible.
Please feel free to ask me any questions when we get to the round or via email before:
kzlee@sas.upenn.edu (email)
for novice tourney: just be nice and have fun! Please time yourself, I will be timing too but I would rather not cut anybody off. And plz wear mask ty
PLEASE WEAR A MASK!! And wear it properly
***Let me know if you need any accommodations before round.
Im a lay judge, ive never hesrd of debate before
Hi, I'm Aris (they/them) and I'm a senior at NSHS. I've been doing PF for four years.
Tech>truth
1. Be nice. If you are racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic etc. I will drop you. If you're unnecessarily rude to your opponents, I'll tank your speaks.
2. No theory or K's
3. I only evaluate extended args in FF, dont drop your links or impacts
4. I won't flow over time.
If you are running a sensitive argument, use anonymous opt-in content warnings like the one linked here before round/speeches.
*Also, if you're comfortable, please let me know if you have a preferred name and/or pronouns that aren't in tab.
If you have any questions, email me at aris.li.email@gmail.com
I did PF for 3 years at Newton South and am currently a freshman in college.
General:
I will be flowing the round, but I prefer a flay debate over a super tech debate. If you're spreading, I probably won't be able to understand you. I will vote on any argument as long as it is warranted and has evidence extended throughout the round.
Please don't be rude to your opponents, I will tank speaks and it'll be more difficult to win my ballot.
Progressive:
I don't have much experience with progressive arguments, so run at your own risk.I think paraphrasing and non-disclosure are fine, just don't misconstrue evidence.
Frontlining:
Frontlines should be made for any offense you want to go for later in the round. Otherwise, I will consider the argument dropped.
send the words "imagine getting carried by your first speaker" to 23lius@abschools.org and I'll give you 30 speaks
newton south’s subpar wifi deleted my paradigm ???? i echo emma chen & alicia gu, so read both ‼️
tldr: i've debated for acton-boxborough, on the local & nat. circuit, for 3 years (and hv debated at big lex every yr!!!)
if you are mean, you will leave w/ a 20
for the love of god, collapse; implicate; and weigh, but do NOT call me judge
NO card dump; it's atrocious
probability weighing is fake !!!!
+0.5 for every taylor swift or tiktok reference
30 if you hv candy for me AND follow @sammy_liu526 on instagram before round
feel free to fb message or email me (sivapriyamp@gmail.com) w/ any questions/concerns!
happy debating ????
Hi! My name is Wasan (she/her/hers) and I am a first-year college student. I was a PF debater for four years in high school. I’m a flow judge.
Preferences:
- Some speed is fine, but please do not spread
- Tech > Truth, but I appreciate a good narrative
- Logic + evidence > logic response > evidence without warranting
- Please weigh. Try to avoid buzzwords (ex: “we win on magnitude”) and prioritize warranted weighing. Metaweighing is meta-cool!
- Frontline turns/address any weighing in second rebuttal
- Warrant responses and properly extend case/impacts
- Collapse by summary. 1-2 arguments are a good range
- I am not experienced with theory and I do not want to judge a round off of it
Important: Be nice to each other!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me before the round. Looking forward to it!
Hi! I'm Neena (she/her/hers) and I do PF debate at Newton South High School :)
First off - debate should be a safe and inclusive environment. If you ever feel unsafe/ uncomfortable before or during round please reach out to me at my email: neena.tarafdar@gmail.com
I'm excited to judge! Please make this a fun and respectful round.
—----- General things —------
-
I'm a flow judge
-
TLDR: Here’s how I evaluate the round: Framing --> weighing --> offense
-
Tech > Truth
-
Point out things that are conceded/dropped
-
"Evidence+warranting > warranting > bEcaUse thE EvIDenCe SayS sO" - EK <3
-
For progressive args:
-
I do not like evaluating prog but if you run it I will do my best to consider it (do what u will with this info)
-
Please ask your opponents if they are comfortable with it (I know progressive argumentation is not accessible to everyone) + do not run it on novices
-
This should be self explanatory but be respectful in round!!
-
OVERALL: Don't make me do my own analysis. Judge intervention is no fun so please try your best to write my RFD for me.
-
Any bigotry will result in an L and a likely report to tab
—----- Specifics—------
Speed:
I'm ok with speed - try not to spread but if you are spreading:
1) check with your opponents if it's okay with them
2) send me and your opponents a speech doc
Evidence:
-
Don’t misconstrue evidence-- paraphrasing is fine but make sure you have good evidence ethics
-
I’ll only call cards if a team tells me to and/or if it is important to my decision
Cross:
-
Bring up important concessions in later speeches
-
Be respectful to your opponents and partner and avoid yelling over each other
Rebuttal:
-
Signpost/tell me where you are on the flow, off-time roadmaps are ok but pls keep them concise
-
WARRANT OUT your evidence. Do not just read a card name and blippy explanation.
-
Frontlining for the second speaking team should all come in second rebuttal
Summary/FF:
-
Summary + FF should mirror each other and have the same material (NO STICKY DEFENSE IN FINAL, everything you extend in final should have been in summary)
-
Try to collapse on one argument
-
Do not forget to weigh - a lot of the weight in my decision will be on the weighing
-
you have to win your offense to win your weighing
If you have any questions about my paradigm or decision feel free to shoot me an email atneena.tarafdar@gmail.com or ask me at the start of round!
Hi! My name is Keshav and i'm a captain on the Acton PF team. Make sure to extend your case, weigh, and overall have fun in the round.
Hi, I'm Dylan!
I'm a PF debater at Newton South High School.
Just some general stuff:
I'm generally more tech>truth but narrative is really good. I will vote for a turn if it's warranted and weighed well though.
Speed isn't a big issue for me but don't spread.
Don't be homophobic, racist, sexist, etc. in round. It makes us all uncomfortable and I will drop you for it.
If you make an email chain, please include me:
Email: dylanjyee@gmail.com
General speeches:
Write my ballot for me! I really hate judge intervention so:
- Please signpost! It makes it so much easier for me to follow what's going on.
- WEIGH! Magnitude and Probability don't mean anything unless you warrant why that's the case.
- If something is dropped in the second half of the round or conceded, point it out! I won't consider it unless you do.
Be nice to each other. You can still get your point across without bullying the other person in cross.
Non-topical stuff:
I personally think that PF should stay topical. Unless there's an actual violation or bigger issue that has to be promoted, I won't vote for it.
Fun Stuff (congrats on getting this far down!): (I cap speaks at +0.5)
- If you want to weigh on uniqueness, call it "quirkiness" +0.5 speaks (Mia Dror added this????)
- Make a random Star Wars reference in any speech (it has to be creative and related to the topic though) +0.5 speaks
- Wear sunglasses/fun hat during round +0.5 speaks
I'm a Newton South debater
If you wanna run any weird stuff just make sure it's clean
I can keep up with spreading, but I'd rather not
Be civil-- I shouldn't have to explain that
Have fun!
also if you're funny I might give you more speaker points, but that shouldn't be your priority of course
