In-Round
I'm a flow judge
I'll vote for pretty much any argument as long as it is warranted well and is not racist, sexist, antisemitic, etc.
Speak as fast as you want. But I think it's bad to go for everything, so be efficient and collapse.
Extend your arguments with card names, links, warrants, and impacts. I really care about extensions. Make sure to frontline, and also don't extend thru ink!! > : (
Everything said in final has to be in summary with the exception of weighing in 1st final
Comparative weighing is a pretty easy way to win a round
Don't be rude or exclusionary!!!! I want everyone to be able to have fun
You should be able to provide cut evidence for teams when they call for it. I'm not reading your evidence unless a team is telling me to do so. Expect bad speaks if you misconstrue evidence
Overall: collapse and go for one argument, try to make your speeches organized (i.e. "Now going to their argument on cyber attacks"), do comparison of arguments with impacts
Please let me know if you need anything. Ask me questions before or after round. You can email or fb message me

I used to compete in Congressional debate, HI, DI, Informative, Extemp, Impromptu, and BQD back in high school for four years. I have been judging PF for 5 years now. keep up with prep time
-
PF - I side on the traditional side of PF. Don't throw a lot of jargon at me or simply read cards... this isn't Policy Jr., compete in PF for the debate animal it is. Remember debate, especially PF, is meant to persuade - use all the tools in your rhetorical toolbox: Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
-
Speed - I like speed but not spreading. Speak as fast as is necessary but keep it intelligible. There aren't a lot of jobs for speed readers after high school (auctioneers and pharmaceutical disclaimer commercials) so make sure you are using speed for a purpose. If you spread I will just stop listening. If the only way I can understand your case is to read it, you have already lost. If I have to read your case then what do I need you in the room for? Email it to me and I can judge the round at home in my jammies - if you are PRESENTING and ARGUING and PERSUADING then I need to understand the words coming out of your mouth!
-
Know your case, like you actually did the research and wrote the case and researched the arguments from the other side. If you present it, I expect you to know it from every angle - I want you to know the research behind the statistic and the whole article, not just the blurb on the card and please actually connect it to the case.
-
Debating is a performance in the art of persuasion and your job is to convince me, your judge (not your opponent!!) - use the art of persuasion to win the round: eye contact, vocal variations, appropriate gestures, and know your case well enough that you don't have to read every single word hunched over a computer screen. Keep your logical fallacies for your next round. Rhetoric is an art.
-
Ethics - Debate is a great game when everyone plays by the rules.
-
Enjoy yourself. Debate is the best sport in the world - win or lose - learn something from each round, don't gloat, don't disparage other teams, judges, or coaches, and don't try to convince me after the round is over. Leave it in the round and realize you may have just made a friend that you will compete against and talk to for the rest of your life. Don't be so caught up in winning that you forget to have some fun - in the round, between rounds, on the bus, and in practice.
-
Immediate losers for me - be disparaging to the other team or make racist, homophobic, sexist arguments or comments. Essentially, be kind.
-
Questions? - if you have a question ask me.
- I don’t judge based on the cross
Please treat me like a lay judge.
I will vote on arguments I find more persuasive
I'm a 4th-year varsity debater at Sequoyah High School
*Please show up to your round on time*
How I will evaluate the debate/general thoughts:
-
You can go as fast as you want, but please don't spread. And one tip I will give: don't sacrifice clarity for speed (I can't flow what I can't understand)
-
Please extend all of your arguments
-
Weigh arguments and use ballot directing language - you can do this with an overview in the last speech that tells me how you win or with voters; I don't care.
-
Both carded evidence and logic rebuttals are good.
-
If you can, please number your responses to arguments so I know if I missed anything
Crossfire:
-
You can be aggressive; please don't be rude (Rudeness = lower speaks)
-
Overall I will not flow cross, so if you make a good point that you believe should be on the flow, make sure to bring it up in your following speech.
Speaker points and RDF:
-
As for speaker points, as long as you speak clearly and know your evidence, you should be fine; adding any puns or references from marvel or star wars will boost your speaker points. Or you can follow me at Mg_haggerty on Instagram and send me your favorite meme!
-
I will try to disclose and give you a detailed RDF
If you have any questions at all, you can ask me in round or email me at magghagg927@gmail.com
Have a good time and good luck debating
Hey, I'm Taryn
I'm a varsity PF member at Sequoyah High School
Some key notes:
Tech>Truth (call out your opponent on a false fact, or I will take it as if it is real in this round).
DO NOT falsify evidence. Speaks will be massively dropped, and if the fake card was key to your victory, then you will automatically lose.
Be as aggressive as you want in cross, but no petty name-calling.
During cross, I am listening but not flowing. If you want me to flow something that was said in crossfire, bring it up in the VERY NEXT speech.
I will award the win to someone who knows the intricacies of their argument, and can explain it to me as if I didn't know what they were talking about beforehand.
I am a flow judge, be consistent and bring up all the points you want me to remember when I go to cast my ballot.
MAKE SURE TO COLLAPSE!!
If you have to go too fast in Summary or Final Focus, it's because you are trying to carry too much.
Good Luck!
Here's my email to add to the card exchange:

I'm a 4th-year debater, with this being my Third year in varsity at Sequoyah. For qualifications, I have been a semifinalist at second year state for PF and a Quarterfinalist at State.
*Please show up to your round early, so tech issues can be fixed if they come up*
How I will evaluate the debate/general thoughts:
-
You can go as fast as you want, but please do ask both me and your opponents if you are choosing to spread. One tip I will give: don't sacrifice clarity for speed (I can't flow what I can't understand).
-
Please extend all of your arguments, especially any arguments you want to collapse on, as Final focus should be the main points of the debate. When extending, please refer back to your case and signposting, Ie. “In contention 2 Sub-point A, we state…”
-
Weigh arguments and use ballot directing language - you can do this with an overview in the last speech that tells me how you win or with voters; I don't care.
-
Both carded evidence and logic rebuttals are good. Logic rebuttals should be fleshed out though, so that everyone can understand the logic behind the rebuttal.
-
If you can, please number your responses to arguments so I know if I missed anything
Crossfire:
-
You can be aggressive; please don't be rude (Rudeness = lower speaks) Cross is a two sided portion of the debate, so it should not be completely dominated by one team.
-
Overall I will not flow cross, so if you make a good point that you believe should be on the flow, make sure to bring it up in your following speech.
RDF:

I will try to disclose and give you a detailed RDF.

Background: I did PF debate throughout high school, and judged after I graduated. Most recently, while I was in law school, I coached the Notre Dame Parliamentary Debate Team, and taught an intro to debate and public speaking class.
Theory: Go for it, if you want, but the argument needs to be clear and concise. Also, in general, I am wary of using theory in PF debate because the topic has been chosen for a reason.
Organization: Please make it clear what contentions you are arguing/rebutting, just makes it easier to flow.
Cross-Fire: Though I do pay attention, I do not flow it—so if something important happens bring it up in a speech.
Summary Speeches: I don't consider brand new arguments raised during the summary speeches. I just don't think it's fair because the other team will not have adequate time to respond.
Final Focus: Supposed to be a summary, give me your voters and make them clear. Tell me why I am voting for you.
Decision: I vote based on the flow, so do not drop arguments, and be sure to offer rebuttals against all your opponents' arguments, and impacts. If the flow/impact debate is not clear, I will consider the quality of the presentation and/or the evidence relied on. However, if the teams agree (or one team offers and the other concedes to) a framework, I will vote based on which team fulfilled the framework.
One last thing: Let's all be respectful, remember we are all real human beings behind the screens.
I debated at Sequoyah High School for 4 years in PF!
My email is: elyserobbins22@gmail.com
A couple speaking things: I'm fine if you talk fast, but I need to be able to understand you. Make sure you are signposting throughout your speech. I want to know exactly where you are on the flow- it also helps if you go line by line.
Speeches:
1. Make sure your arguments are all well warranted. Don't just extend author names because I may not have caught them. Read the card and explain to me what it means. I also like logical arguments. Explain why this card is correct or why your evidence makes more sense than your opponents. If you can convince me its true and your opponents don't refute it then it will flow to your side. Don't misrepresent evidence though- keep it truthful.
2. If it isn't in summary don't bring it up in final focus. To be honest I kind of view this as cheating especially if new information is brought up in second final focus. Final Focus should extend the arguments made in summary and be very explicit in the ways your team is winning.
3. I will usually vote on the easiest path to the ballot, so provide very clear argumentation. If something goes untouched by the other side and it is extended throughout the round and weighed then I will usually vote for that issue. I find it really convincing when a team collapses on their main argument, weighs, and fully extends every part of the argument.
4. DON'T BE TOO AGGRESSIVE! If you are rude to your opponents during crossfire or say something offensive there is a 10/10 chance I will drop you even if I thought you won the round. Just be respectful. Debate is supposed to be fun and educational.
5. WEIGH! Weighing is so important because it shows me why your argument matters- especially in comparison to your opponents. You can win your argument, but if you don't tell me why that matters then there is no reason to vote for it.
6. I will disclose unless I have no idea where to vote. I will also give feedback. If you have questions after I disclose about anything at all let me know.
If you have any other questions let me know!
