All Paradigms: Show HideI've judged over 100 debate rounds in the last 2 years at this point. I will flow the round. The biggest caveat is that you should not spread. It does not enhance argumentation and just makes the debate less engaging and less educational. I am putting this at the top of my paradigm. If you decide to spread, and as a result get dropped, that is your fault for not reading the paradigm, not a judge screw.

I hate Ks, not because I don't understand them, but because I think they are bad for debate education. I have the same stance on spreading, I see no point in cramming as much content as possible into a debate if i can't understand you. It is anti-educational.

I like a good, reasonable argument
Not a huge fan of theory, don't run a super frivolous shell. If your opponent is running a frivolous shell make a good argument for reasonability & you should be fine. BUT, absolutely use theory to check REAL abuse.
Spreading- Don't like it. I'll say clear twice & then stop flowing & dock your speaks. It is better to err on the side of caution. If it is a big problem you will be dropped.
Kritiks- I don't like them. I would say don't run them.
Flowing- I flow the round, but if you speak too quickly, the quality of this will significantly deteriorate.
Speaks- Speaker points tend to be "low". Being nice = higher speaks, Being mean/rude = lower speaks. I judge speaker points mostly as if you were in a speech event. If you spread, you will have VERY LOW speaks (think 26). I do believe in low point wins if the tournament allows.
Pet Peeves-
- telling me you won the debate (that is my decision)
- "we should just try" (no, if your opponent is proving active harms, we should not just try.)
- being rude to your opponent
- forcing progressive debate on traditional opponents, if your opponent asks for traditional, please do a traditional round.
Overall, you should run what you are comfortable with. It is better to run a case you know & are comfortable with than a case you don't know just to appease a judge. Just make sure everything is well warranted & linked, & we should be good!

Lincoln Douglas Debate
A good debate is a good debate. Remember that trying to be cutting-edge does NOT make for a good debate by itself. While I appreciate innovation, I hate tricks for the sake of tricks and theories used as a strategy. I prefer topic-based arguments. Keep that in mind.
Framework/Values/Criteria/Standards/Burdens
Standards, criteria, framework, and/or burdens are the same thing - these are mechanisms for determining who wins the debate. If a value is used, it needs to be defended throughout the case and not simply as an afterthought. The framework of the debate should not be longer than the rest of the case. Unless it is necessary to make the framework clear, cut to the chase and tell me what is acceptable and unacceptable, but don't spend 2 1/2 minutes on something that should take just a few sentences to make clear. I want a substantive debate on the topic, not an excessive framework or theory. Note the word excessive. I am not stupid and usually get it much quicker than you think. In the debate, resolve the issue of standard and link it to the substantive issues of the round, then move on.
Evidence and Basic Argumentation:
The evidence adds credibility to the arguments of the case; however, I don't want to just hear you cite sources without argumentation and analysis of how it applies to the clash in the debate. I wouldn't say I like arguments that are meant to confuse and say absolutely nothing of substantive value. I am fine with philosophy, but I expect you to explain and understand the philosophies you are applying to your case or arguments. A Kritik is nothing new in LD. Traditional LD, by nature, is perfect, but I recognize the change that has occurred. I accept plans, DAs, counter plans, and theory (when there is a violation - not as the standard strategy.) Theory, plans, and counter plans must be run correctly - so make sure you know how to do it before you run it in front of me.
Flow and Voters:
I think that the AR has a tough job and can often save time by grouping and cross-applying arguments, please make sure you are clearly showing me the flow where you are applying your arguments. I won't cross-apply an argument to the flow if you don't tell me to. I try not to intervene in the debate and only judge based on what you are telling me and where you are telling me to apply it. Please give voters; however, don't give 5 or 6. You should be able to narrow the debate down to critical areas. If an argument is dropped, then explain the importance or relevance of that argument. Don't just give me the "it was dropped, so I win the argument." I may not buy that it is a crucial argument; you must tell me why it is crucial in this debate.
Presentation:
I can flow very well. Slow down, especially in the virtual world. The virtual world is echoing and glitchy. Unless words are clear, I won't flow the debate. Speed for the sake of speed is not a good idea.
Kritik:
I have been around long enough to see Kritik's arguments' genesis. I have seen them go from bad to worse and then good in the policy. I think K's arguments are in a worse state in LD now. Kritik is absolutely acceptable IF it applies to the resolution and, specifically, the case being run in the round. I have the same expectation here as in policy the "K" MUST have a specific link. "K" arguments MUST link directly to what is happening in THIS round with THIS resolution. I am NOT a fan of generic Kritik, which questions whether we exist and has nothing to do with the resolution or debate. Kritik must give an alternative other than "think about it." Most LDs ask me to take any action with a plan or an objective - a K needs to do the same thing. That said, I will listen to the arguments, but I have a very high threshold for the bearer to meet before I vote on a "K" in LD.
Theory:
I have a very high threshold of acceptance of theory in LD. There must be a straightforward abuse story. Also, coming from a policy background - it is essential to run the argument correctly. For example having a violation, interpretation, standards, and voting issues on a Topicality violation is essential. Also, please know the difference between topicality and extra-tropical. Learning what non-unique really means is essential. Theory for the sake of a time suck is silly and won't lead me to vote on it at the end. I want to hear substantive debate on the topic, not just a generic framework or theory. RVI's: Not a fan. Congratulations you are topical or met a minimum of your burden I guess? It's not a reason for me to vote, though, unless you have a compelling reason.

Public Forum Debate
I am more of a traditionalist on PFD. I don't like fast PFD. The time constraints don't allow it. There are no plans or counter plans. Disadvantages can be run, but more traditionally, without calling them disadvantages.
Basic debate principles - claim, warrant, and IMPACT must be clearly explained. Direct clash and clear signposting are essential. WEIGH or compare impacts. Tell me your "story" and why I should vote for your side of the resolution.
I have experience with every type of debate, so words like link cross-apply and drop are okay.
The summary and final focus should be used to start narrowing the debate to the most important issues with a direct comparison of impacts and worldview
I flow - IF you share cases, put me on the email chain, but I won't look at it until the end and ONLY if evidence or arguments are challenged. Speak with the assumption that I am flowing, not reading.

WORLD SCHOOL DEBATE
I have experience and success coaching American-style Debates. World Schools Debate quickly became my favorite. Every year that I coached WSD, I coached teams to elimination rounds at local, state, and NSDA National tournaments. I judge WSD regularly and often.
The main thing to know is that I follow the norms of WSD (to which you all have access). I don't want WSD Americanized.
How would you describe WS Debate to someone else?
WSD is a classic debate—the type that folks think about when they think about debates. It is much more based on logic and classic arguments, with some evidence but not much evidence. It is NOT an American-style debate.
What process, if any, do you utilize to take notes in the debate?
I flow each speech.
When evaluating the round, assuming both principle and practical arguments are advanced through the 3rd and Reply speeches, do you prefer one over the other? Explain.
I look at both. Does the principle have merit, and the practical is the tangible explanation? I don’t think the practical idea has to be solved, but is it a good idea?
The WS Debate format requires the judge to consider both Content and Style as 40% of each of the speaker’s overall scores, while Strategy is 20%. How do you evaluate a speaker’s strategy?
Strategy is argument selection in speeches 2, 3, and 4. In 1st speech, it is how the case is set up and does it give a good foundation for other speeches to build.
WS Debate is supposed to be delivered at a conversational pace. What category would you deduct points in if the speaker was going too fast?
The style mostly, but if it is really fast then maybe strategy as well.
WS Debate does not require evidence/cards to be read in the round. How do you evaluate competing claims if there is no evidence to read?
The argument that makes the most sense, is extended throughout the debate, and does it have the basics of claim, warrant, and impact?
How do you resolve model quibbles?
Models are simply an example of how the resolution would work. Which model is best explained, extended, and directly compared? If those are even, which one makes the most intuitive sense to me?
How do you evaluate models vs. countermodels?

Policy Debate:
A good Debate is a good debate. I flow from the speech not from the document. I do want to be on the email chain though. I prefer good substantive debate on the issues. While Ks are okay if you are going to read them, make sure they are understandable from the beginning. Theory - the same. If you think you might go for it in the end, make sure they are understandable from the beginning.
Be aware, that on virtual, sometimes hard to understand rapid and unclear speech (it is magnified on virtual). Make necessary adjustments.
Links should be specific and not generic. This is everything from K to DA.
The final speech needs to tell the story and compare worlds. Yes, line by line is important but treat me like a policymaker - tell me why your policy or no policy would be best.

I have been coaching debate for 16 years. Before that, I debated in HS and college. I am fairly traditional in all aspects and will always prefer an on-topic debate to a kritik.
CX
I will judge a debate round both as a decision-maker of the debate and as an educator of oral argumentation. I will vote for the affirmative if its proposal is inherently more advantageous than the negative option (the present system or the counterplan). The affirmative must meet its obligation to the burden of proof on each of the stock issues to win the debate.
The purpose of debate is to deliver arguments so that anyone listening to the debate may make an informed decision as to which side presents a stronger case. Debaters speaking rapidly, or making random arguments without sign-posting, do not communicate and therefore cannot win.
LD
I am very traditional. The VC debate is the most important debate. Your arguments should all link back to the VC. I do not enjoy progressive debating in LD and will not vote on a K. Regarding delivery, you should primarily have well-developed arguments. Now having said that, if I can’t understand you, I won’t flow. If I’m not flowing, you lose. Please stay organized and signpost your arguments.

Rate of Delivery
Your rate of delivery should be such that a layperson could understand and follow your arguments. See footage of actual senate floor debate for reference.
Quantity of Args
Quantity of arguments is not as important as the strength of your arguments.
Evidence
I'm not listening just to check off that you used sources. Use your sources to add credibility to the argument.
Parli Pro
You MUST know parliamentary procedure in this event! Show me but don't delay us with frivolous motions.
Clash
Speakers should incorporate some direct clash on the issues previously brought up by others. Avoid repetition of other speakers' points.
Questioning
Ask purposeful, straightforward questions. Challenge the speaker on their knowledge of the topic.
Hi yall! I am a parent judge. I most likely have limited knowledge on the topic and would prefer explanations in rounds. The round is best if it is traditional and make sure to weigh what is most important.
My daughter does LD and it is the most comfortable event I can judge in. I understand the rules of the other events and look forward to your debating!
The lowest speaker point I will give is a 28, unless something egregious happened in round.

assume i know absolutely nothing about the topic or current politics when debating because i probably won't.
i'll default to substance first unless told otherwise.
i'm fine with speed but if you're unclear i'm not gonna understand what you're saying. don't spew down on a novice or you're getting horrible speaks. if you're debating someone that doesn't spread, just match their speed in the later speeches. if you debate efficiently, you should still be able to win without spewing down.
also refer to me however you feel like i don't care enough to get mad about what you call me in round.
ill give relatively high speaks- to increase your speaks, make me laugh.

cp/disad: the type of debate i'm most familiar with. nothing much to say here, just pls impact weigh it will make me happy and don't force me to do that work for you. explain how the cp either solves the aff and the impacts of the da, or just how the cp is just better than the aff and you'll be ahead. link and impact turns are offense on a disad- pls don't concede them.
phil: explain the syllogism of your fw. that's literally it. i'm not exactly the most adept at phil but i can somewhat follow a phil debate. though my phil knowledge is limited, if you can explain it well and explain why it should frame the round and why you're winning under that framework, you win. just err on the side of of overexplaining because otherwise you're gonna lose me. phil i'm most familiar with: butler, levinas, rawls, hobbes, kant, locke.
kritiks: i'm familiar with some of the lit (some id pol, nietzche, baudrillard, psycho, deleuze, glissant, cap, etc.). pls pls pls utilize the rob if you're debating other fws. it'll make me very happy. also explain the world of the alt otherwise idk how i'm supposed to evaluate perms and at to perms. also, utilize the fw of the k--it can win or lose you rounds. k tricks are always appreciated. k 1ars are always one of the harder ones to give so i'll try to give some leeway. also please don't concede extinction ows--i've done this far too many times than i should have and it's definitely not hard to answer.
non t affs: go for it. i barely read these but i've debated enough to understand the strategic value and implications of reading them. try to be creative in your approach in answering these tho bc those rounds are hella interesting.
theory: not my favorite style but do what you want to do. default no rvis, competing interps , dtd, fairness and education are voters. theory imo gets extremely muddled so if you're planning on going for it, just try to explain the abuse story well.
tricks: i'll evaluate them. idk what else i'm supposed to say about this but if you want, go for it i'm not entirely opposed to them. however, pls don't read 50 million paradoxes- you will lose me.
if you have any questions before round, let me know and i can hopefully answer them. also let me know if you want me to do anything to make the round more inclusive for you. don't be a jerk or do anything offensive otherwise you're getting an automatic l25. please dont postround too much i beg.
Speech: Long history judging/coaching all events after competing in policy debate for both high school and college.
Extemporaneous speaking: 1. Avoid the generic attention getters and jump into content as quickly as possible. 2. Cite lots of sources (accurately and fluidly--I'd aim for about 10); 3. Delivery/style: word economy is crucial in this event...rate is conversational, but 7:00 is not a lot of time to answer a complex question; 4. I will keep close time and look closely at the extent to which the speech is balanced. 5. All this said, I appreciate a good joke and an effort to breath personality into the speech--be bold and don't be afraid to take chances.
Platform speech events (oratory, informative, etc.): 1. A lot of my thoughts on extemporaneous speaking are applicable, recognizing this is a different genre of speech--it's geared to reach a broader audience. Thus, I might temper my comments on word economy a little--probably makes sense to take your time a little more and utilize a pace that provides more time to let points sink in, etc. Still, I value a quantity of information over cheesy jokes, etc. 2. I really, really appreciate a speaker who digs deep and finds a unique topic that is meaningful to her. So often, especially in out rounds, speakers are very equal in a lot of ways (organization, delivery, etc.), and it's the topic that helps provide a degree of separation--generic topics are fairly easy to spot. This is your chance--you can pick any topic to talk about; make it worth your while--this will make it worth my while.
Oral Interpretation: I'm not the best oral interpretation coach in the world--just never did it myself or anything like it. But, I'm not the worst either and have seen/judged a lot of INCREDIBLE rounds at the highest levels of competition. The great oral interpers make me forget that I'm judging for a few minutes. I definitely recognize great interp when I see it and am more impressed by performers who move me through pace and facial expressions than I am through volume--though the great interpers will use all the vocal qualities and have a knack for what is needed in each exact moment. The material is key--I love seeing unique themes and performers choosing material that they personally identify with. The introduction is incredibly important--here you have the opportunity to take any topic and make it your own--a source or 2 in the intro can often be effective at contextualizing your message. Take risks. Have fun. Speak your truth.
Policy Debate:
Philosophy/Overview:
I began policy debate decades ago as a policymaker (1990's when a good counterplan/disadvantage strategy ruled the day). Critical arguments are fine but don't assume that's a beginning point for me--be sure and frame the debate by discussing its pre-fiat implications. As far as performative based arguments and other more progressive styles of debate, I'm not against them...just don't have a lot of experience with them--definitely not my starting point--be sure and invest time helping me get there. Generally speaking, I feel the Affirmative should Affirm the resolution and any arguments ought to have a pretty specific link/buy-in to it. While I don't consider my understanding of debate to be inflexible or permanent, a few very gifted and persuasive college NPDA/NPTE teams have tried to convince me that the topic doesn't matter and haven't been successful.
Delivery:
Once upon a time, I erroneously gave myself credit as being a speedster from both a delivery and flowing perspective. I've gotten older (OLD) and am not in that kind of shape any more. I haven't coached or judged national circuit style of debate in a LONG time. I value efficient, quick delivery with lots of arguments--but; word economy is more impressive to me than the rate of speaking. If you must talk as quickly as possible, I'll do my best to keep up but don't be surprised if I miss stuff and/or don't have enough time to process it in a way that does you a lot of good. Definitely go slow on tag lines, game-winning arguments, transitions between arguments, and anything that you'd like to have show up on the RFD. If you enjoy "rapid fire," I get it--it's fun and I want you to have fun--and I don't question the pedagogical value in any way; but if you want me to get most of everything on my flow, I recommend slowing it down to at least 75% of your norm.

I competed in LD and Extemp for two years in high school 2015-2017.
LD: I have been removed from debate for a few years, so terminology doesn't come quickly to me so be careful of jargon or just explain it. I started judging August 2021 for context so consider me Lay. If you speak fast, you should still be clearly enunciating what you are saying. I know what this looks like so don't spread unless you can do it where I can catch all the words. If you spread regardless, just know i'm catching like nothing.
I'm not familiar with progressive terminology things like K's, Theory etc... just FWI since I never ran these in debate. I'm getting more familiar as I hear them but you have to tell me how to evaluate the round and explain the voters clearly. I understand theory more than K's but really don't prefer them ran. I like traditional LD cases or plans. I've only had one round where a debater clearly explained the Theory shell and why I should vote on it.
But, I'll listen to anything and will consider it as the judge but explain it plz and don't let the judge get lost. I don't really flow CX. Slowing down and giving me the tagline or evidence name really helps me flow (:
My speaker points rn are pretty much based on how well I understood your case and how well I was able to follow your speaking through the round.
30 - Perfect speaking, an awesome thought out case, very clear, was able to flow easily, mapped out the flow for me, told me what to vote on and why, responded to all arguments that are active on the flow.
29 - Good speaking, Able to follow case and flow the round, mapped the flow somewhat, some voters, responds to arguments.
28 - Good speaking, case is understandable and was able to flow. No mapping, no voters, drops arguments extensively.
27 - Poor Speaking, drops arguments, case isn't clear. Ran a super super progressive debate against a very new debater. (Different types of case formats are fine (Plans etc...) , but if it gets to a point where your opponent has absolutely no idea what you are saying and cannot respond, the debate just sucks at that point)
26 - Something offensive occurred in round or attitude was very rude towards each other.
If one debater is more progressive versus their opponent and the understanding gap of the type of argument being run isn't there, it will make the debate very difficult to judge. Please make sure your opponent and your judge understand what you are arguing.

I'm a traditional LD judge. Value and Criterion are the most important aspects of LD, so I weigh those heavily on my ballot. Explain your philosophy and terminology to me so I can have a full grasp of your arguments.
As far as speaking goes, if I cannot physically hear/understand your arguments, I cannot flow your arguments. I can keep up with spreading although I would prefer not to. Sign post your args so a clean flow can be kept, and I can organize your arguments easily.
Manners have a part to play in round. Your behavior will be reflected on the ballot.
LD - Need to see adequate value clash. I'm traditional with my LD. I don't like Ks in LD. This is value debate, your value is paramount. I prefer debaters not to spread, but will do my best to flow it. Clarity > speed. Drops are pointless unless you tell me why they impact the round.
CX - Tabula rasa - Ks welcome, but I'm more traditional than progressive. I like to see stock issues. I’m bad at flowing spreading CX, especially at virtual tournaments, so clarity > speed. I like to know your roadmap before each speech.
PF - In my understanding of and experience with PF, this is supposed to be a quick punch-punch type of debate. As long as there’s no glaring errors or things that need to be corrected, a general overview of each point is more than sufficient in this type of debate. This is not CX. It’s its own type of debate, and while you can do some types of argumentation that’s similar to CX, you need to be more concise. I don’t need to see 17 cards as long as you can come to a consensus on definitions of terms and the broad strokes of the debate. Link to the resolution.
In all types of debate, I like to see good time management, links to the resolution, signposting, and clarity. Spell it out for me — if I can’t follow your brain, your opponent probably can’t, either.

I have a debate background but am only recently returning to the community. I like clean extensions and clear VIs. You can spread but please provide a case so I don't miss anything. I'm not strong on theory. Professional and polite, please!
I value slower delivery and clarity. Persuasion, to me, is highly dependent on delivery, not just the words themselves. Let the arguments breathe. Give them space. Mix up the rhythm of your speech to highlight your stronger arguments and maximize interest. It's like using bold and italics, but in speech. Give the listener time to digest the information before moving swiftly to the next point. It actually lightens your load. You don't have to write as much.
Don't speed read. If I can't understand you, I can't vote for you. Please stick to stock issues.
My experience as a debater spans several years, across events including LD, CX/Policy, Congress, throughout both high school and collegiate national circuits; though several years removed from competing; consistently serving as a judge nationally, from NY to TX to CA.
Rules: They're necessary and well-defined, and formalizes debate procedures. The recent interpretations of procedures - regarding open vs. closed CX; CX during prep; file/data transfer consuming prep-time, etc. - may be applied to rounds only when all parties are agreeable to the proposed interpretations. If at least a single party to the debate disagrees, then the traditional interpretation of the debate procedures will be applied. Procedures provide structure, but shouldn't foster stagnation. Rules, like laws, may be viewed differently from person to person, over time. So long as parties are agreeable to reasonable rules adjustments, they may be applied. I view the role of the judge as mainly silent, but present/involved.
Opinions/Intervention: Neutrality, but knowledgeable! I evaluate information presented to me, with no bias, whatsoever. While I may have familiarity with issues and facts surrounding them, the job of the judge is to evaluate the arguments presented. I generally do not seek to subvert the job of any debater. It is the debaters' job to present cases and to rebut inaccurate information, and to contend with faulty arguments. While personal knowledge may cause me to disagree with that which is presented, it would be incumbent upon the opponent(s) to counter-argue the point. I would not impart personal thoughts; but would instead weigh arguments presented on the basis of what is known to me. If ignorant in an area, I'd rely upon debaters to make the most convincing arguments.
Spreading/Speed: Speed is no issue; articulation/enunciation is. Points intended to be made by debaters will simply be lost if not well-articulated by the debater. I will not rehash items to clear up uncertainties. It is not the job of the judge to figure out the debaters' statements. It is instead the job of debaters to present clearly their arguments such that the judge could properly evaluate the same. An indistinguishable statement is just as good as one never spoken.
Paradigm: Both theory and kritik arguments win favorable votes from me. I am rather neutral on the types of arguments presented. I see no degradation to the advancement of educational debate with kritiks, and, similar to my position on rules, believe that interpretations and approaches may be adjusted over-time and across individuals, moving from more traditional ideas of theoretical debate.
Evidence certainly helps, but should not serve as a debater's crutch. Some may present convincing enough arguments of pragmatism and suppositions that lack concrete evidence. Others may present heavily-sourced arguments, with the expectation that Politico, Fox, Washington Post, Harvard Review, etc. will carry the case for them. I accept that evidence is rarely truly pure. Meaning, for example, that where "a Reuters poll (may) shows XYZ..." that poll/study may be laden with implicit/explicit bias. So, it's the duty of the debater to not only research, but to also present crafty arguments that may not be solely dependent upon a sources. Recency may help when/where more recent sources offer better evidence on a topic; but credibility, is most important. Perhaps there's a more recent study that fails to account for the depth of a previous one. New does not always mean better.
Overall, my philosophy tilts more towards the tabula rasa school of thought. I am a neutral, largely silent, participant allowing parties to work through differences on procedural interpretations; and am open to different formats of argumentation, with no set standard; but, expect to be convinced by on party or another, no matter their style. However, there must be formality to debate. So, understanding the rules as traditionally interpreted and incorporating stock issues for a comprehensive and sound argument would help.

CX - This is where I have spent the majority of my time judging. While I am comfortable judging any type of round, my preference is a more traditional round. Debate rounds that are more progressive (kritikal affs, performance, etc...) are totally fine, but you'll do best to slow down and go for depth over breadth here. I think that judges are best when they adapt to the round in front of them. Writing the ballot for me in the last few speeches can be helpful.
LD - Despite judging policy debate most, I was raised in a traditional value and criterion centric area. Still, I think that policy debates in LD are valuable. See my notes above about progressive argumentation. They're fine, but you'll probably need to do a few things to make it more digestible for me. Again, though, you do you. Writing the ballot for me in the last few speeches can be helpful.
PF - I judge only a few PF rounds a year. I'm not up-to-date on the trends that may be occurring. I naturally struggle with the time restraints in PF. I generally feel like teams often go for breadth instead of depth, which I think makes debate blippy and requires more judge intervention. I'd rather not hear 20 "cards" in a four minute speech. Framework is the most reliable way to construct a ballot. Writing the ballot for me in the last few speeches can be helpful.
Congress - Speeches should have structure, refutation, research, and style. Jerky Parliamentary Procedure devalues your position in the round.
Speech - Structure and content are valued equally. I appreciate, next, things that make you stand out in a positive way.
Interp - Should have a purpose/function. There's a social implication behind a lot of what we perform. I value great introductions and real characters.
School Affiliation: Graduate of Brown University; former competitor with Big Spring High School.
Experience: 5-year speech and debate competitor with Big Spring ISD; I was predominantly an LD debater, but I have experience in CX/PF/Congress as well as DX/IX/OO.
Speed: Speech and debate is an educational, public speaking extracurricular. While I can handle spreading, I discourage it. There is a difference between speaking quickly to get your arguments on the board and speaking so fast that no one can understand you. If I cannot understand you, I will not flow your argument. To help with clarity, please tagline your arguments with clear markers (i.e: Contention 1, subpoint A, etc.).
Types of Arguments: I support "traditional" debate in every sense of the word. I will evaluate rounds by how well debaters stick to the resolution and debate the nuance of it using their value and criterion. Consequently, I am not a fan of CX-like argumentation (this includes, but is not limited to, arguments concerning topicality, plans and counterplans, and kritiks). These arguments are never persuasive to me. Stick to the resolution, back up your argumentation with solid statistics and analysis, and compare them to your opponents'. In the end, give me voters. That is how you can win my ballot.
Speaker Points: As I mentioned with speed, clarity and persuasive argumentation are at the core of this activity. To receive high speaker points, be clear, concise, persuasive, and respectful (both in terms of treatment of others and the language you use). Speed will never add points, but it certainly will take them away if I cannot understand you.
Email Chain: I do not want to be added to email chains. The presentation of your case and subsequent points is how I will flow and consider arguments. As a result, communication is key.
Disclosure: I do not disclose who won my ballot or speaker points.
For speech events: clear, concise speaking at a reasonable pace.
For debates: I value clear, concise speaking. Spreading is not encouraged. If I can't understand you, I can't value your argument over your opponent's. I would love to see clash between arguments, as well.
I have coached and judged L-D debate for many years, watching it change and evolve. I enjoy this format because I think it challenges students to be critical thinkers and not just critical "readers."
I need to hear credible evidence.
I like a balance between practical and philosophical arguments, especially when debating a topic that has clear positions on each side.
As far as presentation, I will choose substance over style if presented that choice. If I can't follow an argument because of circular reasoning or speed, I cannot vote on it.
I do my best to not debate students on the ballot. I try very hard to understand your position and vote on the round I see, not the round I would have debated.
Background-
I did basically all events in high school and am comfortable and experienced judging everything. In college I debated parli for 4 years at Texas Tech University and was very nationally competitive by the end of my career. I have been coaching for 15ish years and judging for even longer than that.

I default Netben unless told otherwise. Impacts and solvency are the best things to convince me to give you my ballot. Be civil or be tanked on speaks.
LD-
I don't mind hearing policy style or critical arguments, but you still need to engage with opponents that use Value and Criterion. You can't just format your opponents out of the round. For me, it is all about the line by line and how you structure your framework. The easiest thing for me to vote on are solvency and impacts. I will listen to theory, but there needs to be clear abuse. I am probably not the guy to run super experimental or out there arguments with. I don't mind hear critical stuff, but it is very easy for me to attach myself to arguments that simply say your K has no impact, perm do both, or just reading theory. I would say K's are not my strong suit, but I'll listen to them.
CX-
I'm good with everything. Don't name/card drop at me assuming I have heard the card you are talking about. (Cause I probably don't remember it lol)
Speed-
I'm ok with it as long as your opponent is ok with it. I refuse to let someone just spread a newer and/or traditional debater out and not allow them to engage in the debate. I will tell you to slow down if I need you to. Particularly so on online tournaments, speed needs to be accessible. I'll be honest, my ears are not as fast as they used to be. You probably just need to plan on going a little slower for me and give me access to evidence.
K-
Don't name drop and assume I know what your talking about. I expect links and impacts just like any other argument.
T-
Need to prove abuse, don't just say it is unfair.
CP/DA-
Absolutely my favorite thing to listen to in debate.
I am a parent judge.
I am ok with spreading as long as I have your case with me and prefer less spreading during rebuttals.
I pay special attention to CX and Rebuttals and you score higher if you logically tie your case, questions and rebuttal arguments. In your conclusions do summarize why your case is stronger than your opponent's.
Be organized, treat your opponent with respect and time your selves.
I like to reflect on the round before I submit the ballot so it may not be possible for me to disclose at the end of the round.

I am a communications judge. No Kritiks please. I’m cool with some theory, not all of them (not a fan of disclosure theory).
I focus on enunciation; speak clear taglines, regardless of flashing the judge your case, it is still a speaking event.
Note: there’s a difference between fast speaking and spreading. Just make sure to enunciate your tags, signpost, etc., and you’ll be fine. if I hear heavy breathing because you’re reading too fast, it’s a problem.
Having said that, I like analytics. You can use evidence/cards and cross apply them, just ensure you provide a clear explanation as to why you’re able to cross apply them. You can’t just say “cross apply my C1 to his DA” and move on; tell me why it applies. Make sure to emphasize how it cross applies.
I like to follow the flow. I expect a good, yet understandable rebuttal. Please include me (the judge) in the email chain, if any. (antonio.valdez@psjaisd.us)
please do not be rude. If you become aggressive within the round, expect to see low speaks. It’s one thing to attack an argument, it’s another thing to attack your opponent.
Last, I do not disclose. Tournaments typically run late and I don't wanna add to the problem.
i will listen to any argument as long as the warrants makes sense. I tend to have a high threshold for voting on extinction scenarios, doesn’t mean I won’t, but your link chain has to be solid.
Non topical stuff needs to show me why giving you the ballot outweighs topical debates.
Not very receptive to shady theory. I want a reasonable argument indicating abusiveness.
I vote on arguments made in a voters section. These arguments must be substantiated throughout the debate. But I don’t want to intervene so it’s your job to write my RFD.
i want to be on the email chain but I find speech drop works best.
I don’t time. Time each other. Don’t be rude, keep it professional and avoid any personal attacks. Kindness will be rewarded in speaks.
if you plan on running anything different might double check before the round that I’m okay with it. I listen to most stuff. I love K debates over super policy rounds. I find debates that collapse to topicality and theory very boring, if the round necessitates such arguments I understand but I’d rather your strategy make sense to the context of the round.
Always send a marked version of the doc if you end up going off schedule and be clear when you’re reading anything not on the doc. I flow off the doc, I still want to understand you when you’re speaking so don’t abuse the fact that I flow off the dock and read so fast you’re incomprehensible.
Speaks
30-29: Expect to see you in out rounds. Amazing well thought out strategy. Clear arguments.
29-28: Few logical inconsistencies, good strategy and good overall performance.
28-27: Confusing at times and suspect strategy. Made the round unclear.
27-26: Mostly unclear. Strategy is poorly planned.
26-25: Non responsive and no viable strategy.
25-20: Reprehensible behavior.
Congress:
Congress is a persuasive event. A high score requires you to use your voice as a tool of persuasion. Quality will always trump quantity. I prefer a rate of delivery that is close to conversational and utilizes speed, space, volume, and tone to emphasize important facts.
To receive a perfect score, you must have an AGD, at least 2-3 pieces of cited evidence (including source and date), and overt organization. If you are not the Author/Sponsor, I do expect you to make connections to other speeches. These can be refutations (clash) or extensions on previously made arguments (tell me how what you're saying goes deeper, makes different impacts, or explains a previously stated concept). I should always feel that your speech is connected to the larger debate/discussion of the round.
Presiding Officers: I like efficient POs that I hardly notice and that really know their Parliamentary Procedure. I do not like POs that are overly involved or judgy. Don't frown on one sided debate, but remind the chamber that previous question will be immediately called etc. It is not your job to force students to switch sides or give speeches they may not be comfortable with. I also dislike comments when questioning ends ("I guess we'll never know" will hurt your score). Your job is to be pleasant and efficient. If you maximize the voices of the speakers while minimizing your voice so that the round runs smooth and speeches are maximized, you will receive high scores and be ranked high on my ballot. *PET PEEVE: Orders of the day is not the same thing as the motion to adjourn. Orders of the day requires there to be legislation that was tabled and simply moves the previous question on all tabled legislation.*
Extemp: I want a good AGD and structure throughout the speech. I really like introductions that orient me to your thesis, not only your topic area. Intros don't need to be funny, but I do like creative AGDs that draw from culture, current events, history, etc. I want to hear at least 2 pieces of recent evidence per point and that citation should include source and date. Please use your voice as a tool that keeps me interested and contributes to comprehension. If you seem interested and like you find the subject interesting, that will often come through the speech. The first thing I ask myself is did you fully answer the question. Good unified analysis and delivery are both important to me, but the analysis will usually win out in a tie.
