WL-LD Debate Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show Hideshe/her; debated for Greenhill and Team USA. shreya.agarwala1@gmail.com
Updated 2/13/2024 for TFA State (hired) below:
Attends Columbia Law School, competed in PF, LD, Worlds. Judged for 3 years.
Most recently judged WS in 2021, has judged national tournaments. Has also judged PF and LD in 2020.
I have chaired a round (continued round between speeches, released panel decision).
World Schools debate mimics the parliamentary format of government where students take turns debating a topic that is prepared either before the tournament or one hour before the round. It is judged on style, content, and strategy.
I flow on paper using a format similar to LD where I write all arguments down in a line in a column then match such arguments to the responses.
I do not prefer principle over practical (or vice versa) until the debaters frame which is more important. If no weighing is given and in order to vote I must pick one over the other, I will prefer one or the other based on the wording of the motion such as if it is policy based or a believes motion. However, I believe that is still a form of judge intervention and will avoid doing so if at all possible.
I evaluate speaker strategy based on if debaters prioritize the important arguments in the round, does not extend unimportant arguments, time allocation, taking POIs/the response, and most importantly, weighs. If they are the first speaker, I heavily evaluate time allocation.
I will deduct from style if a speaker is going too fast.
I will evaluate competing claims without evidence based on the weighing and logic provided by debaters. If no weighing is provided I will generally consider the argument a wash and look to other arguments to evaluate the debate.
I resolve model quibbles based on what the debaters tell me. If those that presented the model are able to demonstrate that the opposition's arguments are indeed quibbles, I will generally side by proposition as they are allowed to set the grounds for the debate. If there is a countermodel, I will use similar logic as opposition may bring a countermodel to the debate.
I evaluate models vs countermodels based on what the debaters tell me. However, countermodels must have a unique benefit from the model. If it is able to achieve the same thing as the model with no benefit, I will still side proposition as it is the opposition's job to prove prop is harmful, not just that there are alternatives.
Notice the common thread in my paradigm is basing my vote on what the debaters say. I will not weigh for debaters.
Worlds:
Don't be discriminatory, weigh, and give voters.
PF:
1) Judge on the flow - make sure to extend arguments or I won't vote on it.
2) Have offense. Defense won't win you a debate.
3) Don't take forever to show a card to your opponents or your speaks will take a hit.
4) Weigh please.
5) Let your opponents speak in CX. If you continuously talk over them and don't let them ask questions, your speaks will be sad.
6) I do not tolerate discrimination of any kind. You say something racist, you lose.
In terms of argumentation, I'm generally fine if you run anything. Whether or not you do it well is going to be interesting as I am not sure if PF lends well to certain kinds of arguments. But if you want to run a K go for it. Just don't run one for the sake of confusing your opponent.
LD:
Admittedly, it's been a hot minute since I've done LD. I know how the format works, I am down for every argument BUT I might struggle with very fast speed if you are not clear. However, I will list a few of the forms of argumentation I don't like. I'll still evaluate it but just in case you're worried about internal biases and stuff. I don't like underviews and frivolous theory. I will yell clear or slow if I can't understand you but once I do it 3 times, I will stop flowing.
If you're running anything with heavy amounts of complex philosophy (no this does not include util/deon and basic stuff like that), you need to explain it well so I can understand the argument enough to vote on it.

Short overview
Did LD for 3 years, qualled, and currently the assistant coach for Kempner HS
Run whatever you want as long as you explain it well
Send analytics if you're going to spread thru them
Be funny - its hard for both the competitors and judges to do back2back rounds so make it interesting
Conflicts: Hastings, Kempner, SFA, Elkins AS
Debate
(This goes for all events primarily LD and Pol)
Signpost: PLS - i have downed debaters so many times bc they "think they won" and didnt signpost - if I am lost on the flow and if u see me not typing - well good luck bc i didnt flow it
Argumentation: analytics is better than spreading random cards - however u do u - my opinion? it is easier to say "no nuke war bc of MAD (mutually assured destruction)" than it is to spread random cards in the R's - warranted analytics >> cards -- HOWEVER this is just my opinion i dont default to anything nor do i have a preference of truth over tech and vise versa - you tell me what to do in the rd plain and simple
FWK: Super important with K deb8's and opposing args - its HOW you win the rd NOT why you won the rd
Speaks: I base speaks on strats and args - i believe this is a debate event not speech so i dont care if u stand/sit or have fluency breaks - literally had someone eat in the rd b4 - i honestly could care less - debate is tiring and i get it - do whatever u want - however if you are rude to your opponent, especially if they're novices i will give u 25 speaks - ie 4+ off against a novice
Weigh: Pls weigh - if u dont then dont be mad abt the ballot
Ballot/Post round - if u are a competitor i will always disclose and give verbal RFD's - if u have questions, feel free to ask - if there is an issue with the decision i made then grab ur coach first then we can talk abt it - i dont wanna hear 3nr's and 3'ars without your coach present

(1) LARP
(1/2) Shells

(5) Trix/Strike
K'S
- I mainly ran nonT islamo and haunto my senior year - i love a good k deb8
- most familiar w/ cap, set col, haunto, islamo, afropess, biop/foucalt, queerness, ableism <<<< however run whatever u want
- I will not do the work for you - you have to do that
- judge instruction/access to ballot is super important
- Psycho k's annoy me - run at your own risk and run it well
Shells
- I primarily ran friv or meta towards my senior year
- These debates get rlly messy - i tend to dislike that - line by line is best
- I dont default anything - you tell me what to do
- Pls make sure the shell has weight to it - especially for TVK or TVT deb8's
- shells must have an interp, violation, standards, voters, and implication <<<< if it doesnt then dont even bother pls i dont want lazy shell work
Larp
- my grandma who barely speaks english can judge LARP
- pls weigh
- cp's need to be competitive
Phil/Trix
- probably the worst judge for this- my brain hurts trying to comprehend these deb8's

Debate:
I’ll flow any argument and I can deal with spreading. I really love interesting original cases, particularly based around philosophy (unless they’re just poorly constructed).
I have a much easier time voting for cases with strong framework and make use of that framework, but framework doesn’t matter unless you make it
Speech:
Conversationality and argument construction are the two most significant factors I base my rankings on (but of course not the only factors).
My paradigm is simple. I am an old school debate judge (having done LD back in the mid-90s). I value solid evidence. I do not appreciate old evidence as we are usually debating very present-day topics. In addition, I like seeing good analysis on topic. I will also base decisions on over-reaching arguments that are dropped/addressed in a round. Finally, I loathe spreading. I remind all students at the beginning of each round.

Yes, I would like to be on the email chain: chensixiao@gmail.com
I am okay with speed, but make sure to slow down on tags, theory, analytics, etc. If I cannot understand you, I will call "clear."
I won't count flashing/emailing as prep, unless it gets unreasonable. Generally this should take <15 sec., so if you're struggling with this, take some time to learn how to use Verbatim's built in features.
I haven't formed any concrete views about judging debate, which means that I will evaluate most arguments as they are debated. Even though I debated mostly on the policy side in high school, don't let this stop you from reading your best args. I'd rather see a good K debate than a bad policy debate. This does mean, however, that I would appreciate more explanation during K debates, unless you want me to parse through and misunderstand your authors.
I like comparative and detailed impact calculus. This includes comparison of timeframe and probability. Comparison and calculus is crucial for me to evaluate a theory or framework debate.
This is my first paradigm, so let me know if you have any more specific questions before the debate and I'll do my best to answer them.
Hi! I am a parent judge. I am comfortable voting on arguments that are properly extended and weighed. You need to tell me why to vote for you and prove to me why your evidence/arguments are important. Be respectful to your opponents and I will not vote on anything that is offensive in anyway(ie things that are racist/sexist/homophobic etc.) I'm good with medium speed. Add me on the email chain: anitha3@hotmail.com
CX paradigm: When it comes to CX debate I find myself normally more of a traditionalist judge. I favor the quality of your arguments over the quantity. With that being said I would prefer that spreading be kept to a minimum, or if possible, not present in the debate at all. I classify myself as a policy maker judge, tell me why your plan, or status quo/ counterplan, is better than the proposition the opposite side is making. Additionally, I believe stock issues to be quintessential in arguing your side, although drop(s) on stock issues do not equate to a winning ballot. I also believe highly that this event is centered on the competitors ability to communicate, with that being said, roadmaps and signposting every argument and every stock issue is a very effective way of winning my ballot. Please do not read me a list of evidence and not tell me exactly where you want that piece of evidence. I’ll flow the evidence, but I will not assume where you want me to put that evidence on my flow, nor will I speculate how that evidence is supposed to be used in round. I am not particularly a fan of K debates, however if the competitor thinks they can be successful in properly communicating the K, I will listen to it. In terms of having an open cross examination during the debate, I will allow it, however, I expect the competitor who is supposed to be question/answering to do most of the talking.
LD paradigm: When it comes to LD debate I find myself normally more a traditionalist judge. I favor the quality of your arguments over the quantity. With that being said I would prefer that spreading be kept to a minimum, or if possible, not present in the debate at all. In addition to that, I believe that LD debate is centered around the value/criterion debate, as a result, I will not vote on any plan text presented by either side. I also appreciate debaters who treat their value/criterion as a fundamental to not only their case, but also on their arguments against their opponents case. I also believe highly that this event is centered on the competitors ability to communicate, with that being said, roadmaps and signposting every argument is a very effective way of winning my ballot. Please do not read me a list of evidence and don’t tell me exactly where you want that piece of evidence. I’ll flow the evidence, but I will not assume where you want me to put that evidence on my flow, nor will I speculate how that evidence is supposed to be used in round.
i did pf for westlake high school for four years
i was a tech Debater, pls feel free to read theory, Ks, etc (progressive arguments are good for pf)

Hello :)
I’m Faizaan Dossani. He/Him. Add me to the email chain: faizaan.dossani@gmail.com
Westlake (TX) 2017-2021, I also coached here for the 2021-2022 season.
General/Introductions
I don't really have any disposition to any particular style of debate and will simply vote for whichever argument is winning the highest layer of the flow. I also have a low tolerance of being disrespectful to your opponents; just be nice please.
I competed in LD on the local and nat circuit in which I cleared at TFA and a sizable chunk of nat circuit tourneys. I also taught at ODI for its past two sessions. I think debate is a game with educational value and freedom. This basically means that I am tech>truth, but still care about maintaining the pedagogical value and accessibility that debate should have. I try to do everything possible to not intervene in my decisions, so navigate my ballot for me.
Kritiks + K Affs
I primarily read these arguments, as my go-to strat junior and senior year was 1-off K. I mainly read Settler Colonialism, Baudrillard, Wynter, Anthro, Berardi, Derrida, cap stuff, and Islamophobia lit but am extremely familiar with a lot of k lit (disability lit, most black scholars, and most identity politics). I have an extremely basic understanding of high theory (Deleuze, Nietzsche, etc.), but as long as you do the proper explanation, I can probably evaluate any literature you throw at me.
- Overviews are appreciated but good line by line is usually more compelling for my ballot
- I think reading pess args when you don't identify with that certain group is bad.
- Give trigger warnings. If you forget and remember midway through the speech, pause your timer and just ask everyone; safety is the most important.
LARP
I read/cut many larp positions and it was also the style of debate I hit the most, so I'm pretty comfortable evaluating these debates. I haven't done much research into the topic literature so please explain your positions to me very clearly!
- DO WEIGHING or I won't know which impacts you want me to evaluate first which means I have to intervene :(
- Evidence comparison is a must have in competing claims over the same argument
- I think reading like 6+ off and then just going for the one the aff had like 10 seconds to respond is a lazy strat, but I guess I will vote off it
Tricks
I have a love/hate relationship with tricks. I don’t mind an underview with some spikes scattered in, but I don’t understand most of the paradoxes. (Spark, GCB, Zenos, etc.) I think a lot of the tricks are stupid in nature, but I guess I will evaluate them.
- Don't be sketchy!
- Make sure that all of your tricks are on the doc. Even if you say "im extempting x" in the speech you still should send a doc of whatever analytics you read. In tricks debates, I heavily rely on the doc compared to other debates.
T + Theory
Usually wasn’t an off in my strats, but I think good theory debate can be fun. Bad theory debate means that you are just regurgitating the shell and not actually explaining how I should evaluate the abuse story on a framing level.
- I won't default any paradigm issues; please just make the implications yourself
- The more frivolous the violation, the more likely I will lower the threshold for response
- I think some form of disclosure is probably a good idea, but I also think that can be up for debate
Phil/FW
I barely read any complex framing other than Mouffe. However, I have judged a lot of phil debates so I feel that I can probably handle whatever you read as long as it is properly explained.
- Explain your complex buzzwords to me, examples will boost speaks
- I think framing hijacks/proving why your framework precludes their moral theory can be extremely compelling in these debates
Traditional Debate
I never really partook in any traditional style of debate (VC or definitional stuff) but I did debate traditional debaters a lot and feel that I can confidently evaluate these debates.
- I think the extra attention to ethos is nice in these debates, but at the end of the day I will still evaluate your arguments on a technical level first
- I'd rather you spend more of your time focusing on the substance of the debate instead of value/VC. I often find that most values are kinda the same thing but just worded differently, which makes evaluating weighing between different values kinda futile.
PF Paradigm
I never actually competed in PF but going to Westlake allowed me to drill/prep with a lot of our PFrs so I have been heavily exposed to the argumentation style and evolving nature of PF. The people that I have worked with that I have pretty similar takes on debate are Cale McCrary, Zain Syed, Jawad Bataneih, Jason Luo, and Cherie Wang.
- You can debate as tech or lay as you want in front of me. Doing LD broadened the styles of debate I partook in, so I can handle whatever progressive arguments you throw at me. Speed is fine as well, but be clear.
- I will give both teams plus 0.2 in speaks if yall just flash cases before constructive, we all know your calling for evidence just to steal prep which wastes everyones' time
Speaks + Misc.
I give speaks based off efficiency, argument quality, and just your general attitude in round. I try to be as consistent as possible with speaks, so you will most likely get between a 28-29.6 unless you do something exceedingly bad/good.
- Please record your speeches, especially if you have a history of laggy wifi
- Throwing in jokes during your speeches is always a plus
- For evidence ethics, I'd rather you form the argument into some type of theory shell instead of staking the round and allowing me to decide, but I will try to default on whatever rules the tournament is following
I know debate can be stressful and toxic; just do your best and have fun cause at the end of the day we are just some losers yelling at each other on NSDA campus :)
TLDR: I am pretty tab and will vote on anything so long as its not morally repugnant and you tell me why it matters.
I would like to be on the email chain; Katyaaehresman@gmail.com . please time yourselves, flashing isnt prep unless its egregious. Let me know what pronouns you use & pls abide be your opponents pronouns.
Extensions of an aff arent 'overviews to the 1ar'.. they are just on case.. you prob want me to extend them n the flow not in a clump... idk why this is a trend
on this - i tend to haave a higher threshold for extensions, you need a warrant and impact for me to vote on it.
If things get uncomfortable, you need to leave because of mental health/personal safety reasons etc. just message me or knock on the table & give me some look and you will be allowed to go get water/we can stop the round/whatever is best in that situation. Debate should be safe & accessible in order to get these ~portable skillz~ all the kids are talking about.
Short version: Give me some sort of framework to weigh offense under or tell me why the impacts that you are winning are the top layer and I will be happy. I try to do as little work for you as possible so if you didn’t do big picture analysis or weighing the I’ll have to cipher through flows to make a more arbitrary decision and then we are all sadbois. You can read anything you want, though I am probably better at evaluating K/Larp debates and worse at evaluating dense Phil/friv theory debates ~~~ do with that what you will. I care about how you treat one another in round so if you are being obnoxious or problematic in anyway to your opponent, I will start dropping your speaks and if its irredeemable then I won’t vote for you. *shrug emoji* If you are worried about your behavior then… err on the side of being nice?????
Long Version:
I think paradigms are supposed to be more like what sorts of strategies I like to see on each type of flow to help you W30 in front of me so these are things that make me very happy:
Ks:
- Great, love them
- Pls win some sort of link or a reason why me voting for you matters & WARRANT it - I will probably call you on just regurgitating tags if that’s all you do for extensions.. do work please
- Performance is fine, the resolution isn’t always necessary as a stasis point if you tell me why - but I don’t have a default on this.
- PIKs are fine, be clear on what exactly you (my ballot) is solving for
- Subsequently I can be persuaded by PIKs bad, again just warrant it and do top level weighing
K affs:
- Again, love these! Read a wide spectrum of them myself.
- Apply strategy/framing issues from the K section here too
- Win why either talking about the topic is bad, your approach to talking about the topic is better, why your method or approach is good etc. and importantly what happens when I sign aff on the ballot.
- Don’t shy away from your off in the 1AR - a big pet peeve of mine is when debaters invest a lot of work into a solid K aff that has warrants about why your pedagogy or performance comes first and then you kick it and go for theory or barely extend it and the round comes down to the neg flows… don’t be like this
Performance:
- This is great, I love this - go for whatever you feel like/want, make the round your own - again just warrant why its important and importantly what my role in endorsing your performance is/why the round is important for this medium.
DAs:
- Great, some of my favorite debates are really good topical, substantive larpy rounds
- Give me clear impact calculus/ an internal link story
- I don’t think there are really many paradigm issues surrounding DAs normally… ask me whatever
CPs/PICs:
- Great and super strategic
- CP/Pic theory also viable - I don’t really have a default on pics good/bad but am probably persuaded that its good to test the policy of the aff from different angles
- Analytic, actor, delay etc. Cps are fine - just warrant solvency & competitiveness and give me some sort of net benefit to your world
- This is true with DAs too but try to give me some comparative worlds weighing, again - tell me where & why to vote
Theory:
- Have a low threshold for frivolous theory, would prefer people to just have substantive debate but I am very receptive to engagement and in round abuse preventing topical clash
- Just warrant an abuse story
- Go slow on interps
T/framework:
- very open to this
- If you’re hitting a k aff then try to weigh offense from the shell under the k fw - do interactions or clear layering, these debates get v messy v quick
Phil:
- Slow down a bit on long analytic dumps
- Err towards over-explaining phil warrants
Speed/speaks:
- Go as fast as you want but emphasize clarity
- I give speaks based off of strategy not speaking quality but strategy requires me to flow it and so clarity is somewhat necessary for that
- I will tank your speaks if you are rude, aggressive, say something morally repugnant, demeaning to your opponent etc. so pls don’t do this
For WSD I like clear argument engagement that includes thoughtful weighing and impact analysis. I prefer debates that have colonial and imperial powers reckon with their history (if its germane to the topic). When it comes down to relevancy and impacts/harms, I prefer debates that show how their resolution (whether we're going for opp or prop) will benefit or improve black and brown communities, or the global south.
Interp overall: I pay real close attention to the introduction of each piece, I look for the lens of analysis and the central thesis that will be advanced during the interpretation of literature. When the performance is happening, I'm checking to see if they have dug down deep enough into an understanding of their literature through that intro and have given me a way to contextualize the events that are happening during the performance
POI: I look for clean transitions and characterization (if doing multiple voices)
DI: I look for the small human elements that come from acting. Big and loud gestures are not always the way to convey the point, sometimes something smaller gets the point more powerfully.
HI: I'm not a good HI judge, please do not let me judge you in HI. I don't like the event and I do my best to avoid judging it. If that fails, I look for clean character transitions, distinct voices, and strong energy in the movements. Please don't be racist/homophobic in your humor.
INFO: I'm looking for a well research speech that has a strong message to deliver. Regardless of the genre of info you're presenting, I think that showing you've been exhaustive with your understanding is a good way to win my ballot. I'm not wow'd by flashy visuals that add little substance, and I'm put off by speeches that misrepresent intellectual concepts, even unintentionally. I like speeches that have a conclusion, and if the end of your speech is "and we still don't know" then I think you might want to reassess the overall direction you are taking, with obvious exceptions being that we might literally not know something, because its still being researched (but that is a different we don't know than say, "and we don't know why people act this way :( ")
FX/DX: When I'm evaluating an extemp speech, I'm continually thinking "did they answer the question? or did they answer something that sounded similar?" So keep that in your mind. Are you directly answering the question? When you present information that could be removed without affecting the overall quality of the speech, that is a sign that there wasn't enough research done by the speaker. What I vote up in terms of content are speeches that show a depth of understanding of the topic by evaluating the wider implications that a topic has for the area/region/politics/etc.
Competed for Westlake for 3 years.
Not familiar with progressive argumentation, you can run it if you want practice just don’t trust I can evaluate it without explanation.
Please just treat me as flay judge.
I debated mostly LD at Marcus High School in Texas where I competed locally and nationally on the UIL, TFA, TOC, and NSDA circuits. I'm now the coach at San Marcos High School (TX).
TLDR
I've gotten much worse at flowing so please slow down for tags and implications.
I don't have any conscious biases towards a particular style of debate but I'm less familiar with K lit so please explain.
Judging is hard so make my life easier and tell me exactly how I should be evaluating the round.
GLHF
Defaults
ROB - I'm open to any role of the ballot/judge/etc. Open to any theory voter/standard/net benefits/impact/interp including disclosure, afc, offensive counter-interps, meta, etc. I assume I have some role as an educator, that debate is an educational activity, that education requires inclusion (and inclusion is good in itself), and that debate requires some level of fairness unless told otherwise. I'll also assume that my vote and discourse after the round can have an impact on the community. For the sake of coherency, please still address these, but if you're short on time a few words will suffice.
Spikes - If you are vague in your spikes I will lean on the side of caution so please explain what you mean by "prefer aff interps" or "err aff on theory" so I know what to do. Well developed spikes are fine.
Miscut Cards - If it's a severe case of miscutting, especially if the evidence is being used on T or as an empirical link, I will default to drop the arg. If the opponent points it out, I'm open to other impacts/args like drop debater, lower speaks, etc.
Offensive/Rude arguments – I default to drop speaks. I am open to args why I should drop debater. If you are creating an unsafe environment, I will stop the debate, drop you, and report it as appropriate.
Mislabeled turns – If I can see a possible way that this could be considered a turn, I will count it as a turn. If I can’t conceive of any possible way that this could function as a turn (and I am creative), I won’t vote on it.
Lack of understanding – Similarly to mislabeled turns, if I don't understand the argument, I won’t vote on it. To clarify, this would only happen in extreme cases like “Vote aff cause skies are blue”. I have a pretty good breadth on a lot of k lit and random phil so things like that shouldn’t be a problem. If you are running a k that isn't popular or that relies on a lot of jargon and you are worried about it, you may want to work on explaining it. I also pay attention in CX so if you're explaining it to your opponent, you're also explaining it to me.
Dropped arguments – You can only claim what you originally claimed. In other words, the probability of your event doesn't suddenly increase. If you extend a dropped argument and create a new implication with it, such as cross-applying to the opponent's case, your opponent can still attack the new implication. I default to not accepting new arguments but I'm completely open to arguments that say you should be allowed to make new arguments against blippy spikes in your second speech (also open to arguments saying the opposite).
Extensions – Just a single sentence will do. IE: “Extend the fw that we must respect autonomy for morality to guide action” or “Extend Gray that terrorism causes extinction”. Focus on the function of the arg in relation to the round. Your goal here is just to let me know what strategy you're going for and what my ballot should say. If you don't extend I will be very confused and think it doesn't matter anymore.
Disclosing cases before/during/after the round - It's common practice to share your case with your opponent during the round (if not before). Unless you object to this practice (which is also okay, though you may be inviting theory), please be prepared to do so in a timely manner. If you would like to share your case with me during the round as well, that would be much appreciated as it also saves me time after the round.
Speaks - Evaluated on the basis of where I think you are in relation to the rest of the pool at the tournament with an average of 28. I say clear or slow if I'm completely lost but I try not to. I will give bonus points to you if you challenge my view of something or teach me something new, or if you show respect and kindness to your opponent. Some debaters feel that if they are paired with an opponent who is new to the activity, they will have less of a chance to show how good they are and their speaks will suffer. However, if you use the opportunity to show a mastery of the fundamentals, as well as kindness and inclusivity, your speaks will reflect it.
Accessibility - If there is something making debate inaccessible to you that I can help with please let me know! This is especially true if it can be resolved (or mostly resolved) within the round such as having debaters slow down if you are learning English.
If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to me!
Enjoy yourselves and have fun!

Quick guide to prefs
Share ALL new evidence with me and your opponents before the speech during which it is read. Strike me if this is a problem. A paraphrased narrative with no cards in the doc does not count. This is an accommodation I need and a norm that makes debate better. I have needed copies of case since I was a high school debater. Even with me complaining about this, it often doesn't seem to make a difference. The maximum amount of speaks you can get if you don't share your constructive with me is 28.4 and that's if you are perfect. This guideline does not generally apply to UIL tournaments or novice debate rounds unless you are adopting national circuit norms/speaking style
PF:
Tech > truth unless it's bigoted or something
Unconventional arguments: fine, must be coherent and developed (K, spec advocacies, etc)
Framing/weighing mechanism: love impact framing that makes sense; at the very least do meta-weighing. "Cost-benefit analysis" is not a real framework. Must be read in constructive or top of rebuttal
Evidence sharing/disclosure: absolutely necessary but i won't ever vote for a disclosure shell that would out queer debaters. I will err toward reasonability on disclosure if there is contact info on the wiki and/or the case is freely shared a reasonable time before round.
Theory: I am gooder than most at evaluating theory but don't read it if you don't know how. Evidence ethics is very very very very very important
Speed: Fine. Share speech docs
Problematic PF bro/clout culture: ew no
Weighing: wins the majority of PF debates, especially link weighing
Default: offense/defense if there's no framing comparison or reason to prefer one method of weighing
Flow: yes, i flow
Sticky defense: no

UIL: Pretty much anything is fine if it gets us through the round with minimal physical or emotional damage. Try to stay on the line by line. Read real evidence. Weigh, please. For CX, maybe don't read nontopical affirmatives against small schools or novices. For LD, make sure your offense links to your framing and that you have warranted justifications for your framework. Read on for further details
TLDR: Share speech docs. Don't be argumentatively or personally abusive. Debate is a game, but winning is not the only objective. Line by line debate is important. No new case extensions in 2AR or final focus. I will intervene against bigotry and disregard for others' physical and mental wellness. I don't disclose speaks, sorry :). I promise I'm trying my best to be nice. LD and policy-specific stuff at the bottom of this doc. I love Star Wars. I will listen to SPARK, warming good, and most impact turns but I generally believe that physical death is not good. Pronouns he/him/his.
Speaks range: usually between 27 and 29.8. 28.5 is average/adequate. I usually only give 30s to good novices or people who go out of their way to make the space better. If you are a man and are sexist in the space I will hack your speaks.
Note on ableism: It is upsetting for me personally to hear positions advocating unipolar pessimism, hopelessness, or the radical rejection of potential futures or social engagement/productivity by the disabled or especially the neurodivergent subject.DO NOT read disability pessimism/abjection or pandering arguments about autism to get me to vote for you. You will lose automatically, sorry
Post-rounding: I can't handle it. This includes post-rounding in email after rounds. I am autistic and it is psychologically and behaviorally triggering for me. I'll take the blame that I can't handle it, just please don't.
Afropessimism: I will vote you down regardless of any arguments made in the round if you or your partner aren't Black and you read afropess. Watch me I'll do it
I have the lowest threshold you can possibly imagine for a well-structured theory argument based on the refusal to share evidence not just with me but with your opponents.
Long version:
Personal abuse, harassment, or competitive dishonesty of any kind is strictly unacceptable. Blatantly oppressive/bigoted speech or behavior will make me consider voting against a debater whether or not the issue is raised by their opponent. If a debater asks you to respect and use preferred pronouns/names, I will expect you to do so. If your argument contains graphic depictions of racial, sexual, or otherwise marginalizing violence, please notify your opponent. Also see mental health stuff below, which is personally tough to hear sometimes. You do not need to throw trigger warnings onto every argument under the sun, it can be trivializing to the lived experience of the people you're talking about. Blatant evidence ethics violations such as clipping are an auto-voter. Try not to yell, please; my misophonia (an inconvenient characteristic shared by a lot of autistic people) makes unexpected volume changes difficult.
Our community and the individual people in it are deeply important to me. Please do your part to make debate safe and welcoming for competitors, judges, coaches, family members, and friends. I am moody and can be a total jerk sometimes, and I'm not so completely naive to think everything is fluffy bunnies and we'll all be best friends forever after every round, but I really do believe this activity can be a place where we lift each other up, learn from our experiences, and become better people. If you're reading this, I care about you. I hope your participation in debate reflects both self-care and care for others.
(cw: self-harm)
Mental and emotional well-being are at a crisis point in society, and particularly within our activity. We have all lost friends and colleagues to burnout, breakdown, and at worst, self-harm. If you are debating in front of me, and contribute to societal stigmas surrounding mental health or belittle/bully your opponent in any way that is related to their emotional state or personal struggles with mental wellness, you will lose with minimum speaks. I can't make that any more clear. If you are presenting arguments related to suicide, depression, panic, or self-harm, you must give a content warning for me. I am not flexible on this and will absolutely use my ballot to enforce this expectation.
PF: Speed is fine. Framing is great (actually, to the extent that any weighing mechanism counts as framework, I desire and enthusiastically encourage it). Framing should be read in constructive or at the TOP of rebuttal. Nontraditional PF arguments (K, theory, spec advocacies) are fine if they're warranted. Warrants in evidence matter so much to me.
PF Theory: I agree with the thesis behind disclosure theory, though I am less likely to vote on it at a local or buy an abuse story if the offending case is straightforward/common. Disclosure needs to be read in constructive. Don't read theory against novices. I will have a low threshold for paraphrasing theory if the violation is about the constructive and/or if the evidence isn't shared before the speech. Don't be afraid to make something a paragraph shell or independent voter (rather than a structured shell) so long as the voter is implicated.
I will always prefer evidence that is properly cut and warranted in the evidence rather than in a tag or paraphrase of it, especially offense and uniqueness evidence. I have an extremely LOW tolerance for miscut or mischaracterized evidence and am just *waiting* for some hero to make it an independent voter.. So nice, I’ll say it twice: Evidence ethics arguments have a very low threshold.
DO NOT PERPETUATE THE TOXIC, PRIVILEGED MALE PF ARCHETYPE. You know *exactly* what I’m talking about, or should. Call that stuff out, and your speaks will automatically go up. If you make the PF space unwelcoming to women or gender minorities, expect L25 and don’t expect me to feel bad about it.
I absolutely expect frontlining in second rebuttal, and will consider conceded turns true. I will not vote on new arguments or arguments not gone for in summary in final focus. No sticky defense.
"It's not allowed in PF" is not by itself a warranted argument.
Crossfire: If you want me to use something from crossfire in my RFD, it needs to be in subsequent speeches. I am not flowing crossfire; I am listening but probably also playing 2048 or looking at animal pictures. I don't really care if you skip Grand, but I won't let you use that practice as an excuse to frontload your prep use then award yourselves extra prep time.
LD/Policy Specifics:
Speed: Most rates of delivery are usually fine, though I love clarity and I am getting older. If you are not clear, I will say "clear." Slow down on tags and analytics for my sake and for your opponent's sake, especially if you don’t include your analytics in the doc. For online debates, the more arguments that are in the doc the better. I will listen to well-developed theoretical or critical indictments of spreading, but it will take some convincing.
Kritik: I have a basic understanding of much of the literature. Explain very clearly why I should vote and why your opponent should lose. For me, "strength of link" is not an argument applicable to most kritik rounds - I ask whether there is a risk of link (on both sides). Your arguments need to be coherent and well-reasoned. "Don't weigh the case" is not a warranted argument by itself - I tend to believe in methodological pluralism and need to be convinced that the K method should be prioritized. A link is *not* enough for a ballot. Just because I like watching policy-oriented rounds doesn't mean I don't understand the kritik or will hack against them. If you link to your own criticism, you are very unlikely to win. I believe the K is more convincing with both an alternative and a ballot implication (like most, I find the distinction between ROB and ROJ somewhat confusing). Please be mindful and kind about reading complicated stuff against novices. It is violent and pushes kids out of debate.
Theory/T: Fine, including 1AR theory. Just like with any other winning argument, I tend to look for some sort of offense in order to vote on either side. I don't default to drop the debater or argument. My abuse threshold on friv shells is much higher. I will not ever vote for a shell that polices debaters' appearance, including their clothes, footwear, hair, presentation, or anything else you can think of (unless their appearance is itself violent). I'll have a fairly high threshold on a strict "you don't meet" T argument against an extremely common aff and am more likely than not to hold the line on allowing US/big-ticket affs in most Nebel debates. One more thing - all voters and standards should be warranted. I get annoyed by "T is a voter because fairness and education" without a reason why those two things make T a voter. I don't care if it's obvious. Don't abuse theory against inexperienced debaters. A particularly egregious example would be to read shells in the 1AC, kick them, and read multiple new shells in the 1AR. Underviews and common spikes are fine. Please, I strongly prefer no tricks or excessive a prioris.A little addendum to that is that I do like truth testing as an argument, but not to justify skep or whatever dopey paradox makes everything false
Frameworks: Fine with traditional (stock or V/C), policy, phil, K, performance, but see my pref guide above for what I am most comfortable evaluating. While I don't think you have to have your own framework per se, I find it pretty curious when a debater reads one and then just abandons it in favor of traditional util weighing absent a distinct strategic reason to do so. I think TJF debates are interesting, but I seldom meet frameworks that *can't* be theoretically justified. Not sure if there's a bright line other than "you need to read the justifications in your constructive," and I'm not sure how good that argument is. I will vote on permissibility/presumption, on which I often lean aff in LD/policy.
LARP: My personal favorite and most comfortable debate to evaluate. Plans, counterplans, PICs, disads, solvency dumps, case turns, etc. Argue it well and it's fine. I don't think making something a floating PIK necessarily gets rid of competition problems; it has to be reasoned well. I'm very skeptical of severance perms and will have to be convinced - my threshold for voting on severance bad is very low. Impact turns are underutilized, but don't think that means I want you to be bigoted or fascist. Cap/heg good are fine. I'm very skeptical of warming good but will vote for it. To the extent that anyone prefs me, and no one should ever pref me under any circumstances, LARPers ought to consider preffing me highly.
Condo: Be really, really careful before you kick a K, especially if it is identity-related - I think reps matter. I am more likely to entertain condo bad if there are multiple conditional advocacies. More likely to vote on condo bad in LD than policy because of time/strat skew. One conditional counterplan advocacy in LD or 2 in policy is generally ok to me and I need a clear abuse story - I almost never vote for condo bad if it's 1 conditional counterplan.
Flashing/Email/Disclosure: I will vote for disclosure theory, but have a higher threshold for punishing or making an example of novices or non-circuit debaters who don't know or use the wiki. Reading disclosure at locals is silly. Lying during disclosure will get you dropped with 25 speaks; I don't care if it's part of the method of your advocacy. If you're super experienced, please consider not being terrible about disclosure to novice or small-school debaters who simply don't know any better. Educate them so that they'll be in a position to teach good practices in future rounds. My personal perspective on disclosure is informed by my background as a lawyer - I liken disclosure to the discovery process, and think debate is a lot better when we are informed. I won't vote on disclosure theory against a queer debater for whom disclosure would potentially out them. One caveat to prior disclosure is that I do conform to "breaking new" norms, though I listen to theory about it. In my opinion, the best form of disclosure is open-source speech docs combined with the wiki drop-down list. Please include me on email chains. Even if you don't typically share docs, please share me on speech docs - I can get lost trying to listen to even everyday conversation if I'm not able to follow along with written words. Seriously, I have cognitive stuff, please send me a speech doc.
Sitting/Standing: Whatever.
I do not care how you are dressed so long as your appearance itself is not violent to other people.
Flex prep/open CX: Fine in any event including PF. More clarity is good.
Performative issues: If you're a white person debating critical race stuff, or a man advocating feminism against a woman/non-man, or a cis/het person talking queer issues, etc., be sensitive, empathetic, and mindful. Also, I tend to notice performative contradiction and will vote on it if asked to. For example, running a language K and using the language you're critiquing (outside of argument setup/tags) is a really bad idea.
I do NOT default to util in the case of competing frameworks. If the framing debate is absolutely impossible to evaluate (sadly, it happens), I will try to figure out who won by weighing offense and defense under both mechanisms.
I tend to think plan flaw arguments are silly, especially if they're punctuation or capitalization-related. I have a very high threshold to vote on plan flaw. It has to be *actually* confusing or abusive, not fake confusing. I do like interp flaw arguments as defensive theory responses in the 1ar
I won't ever hack against trad debaters, but I am what you’d call a “technical” judge and if a debater concedes something terminal to the ballot, it’s probably game over. If you’re a traditional debater and the field is largely circuit debaters, your best bet to win in front of me is probably to go hard on the framework debate and either straight-turn or creatively group your opponent’s arguments.
Warrant all arguments in both constructives and rebuttals. An extended argument means nothing to me if it isn't explained. “They conceded it” is not a warranted argument.
Policy:
New for 2022: I'm older than most judges and I don't judge policy regularly anymore; I need you to slow down just a tick (300 wpm is fine if clear). I generally don't get lost in circuit LD rounds; think of that as your likely standard.
I was a policy debater and consultant at the beginning of my career. Most of this doc is LD and PF-specific, because those are the pools to which I'll generally be assigned. Most of what is above applies to my policy paradigm. I am most comfortable evaluating topical affirmatives and their implications, but I am a very flexible judge and critical/plan-less affs are fine. That said, just like in LD I like a good T debate and I will happily vote for TFW if it's well-argued and won. One minor thing is different from my LD paradigm: I conform a little bit more to policy norms in terms of granting RVIs less often in policy rounds, but that's about it. Obviously, framework debate (meaning overarching framing mechanisms, not T-Framework) is not usually as important in policy, but I'm totally down with it if that's how you debate. I guess a lot of policy debaters still default to util, so be careful if the other side isn't doing that but I guess it's fine if everyone does it. Excessive prompting/feeding during speeches may affect speaks, and I get that it's a thing sometimes, but I don't believe it's particularly educational and I expect whomever is giving the speech to articulate the argument. I am not flowing the words of the feeder, just the speaker. While I'm fairly friendly to condo advocacies in LD, I'm even more friendly to them in policy because of norms and speech times. I'll vote for condo bad, but it needs to be won convincingly - I'll likely err neg if it's 1 or 2 counterplans. Much more likely to vote for condo bad if one of the advocacies is a K that links to the counterplan(s).
Everyone: please ask questions if I can clarify anything. If you get aggressive after the round, expect the same from me and expect me to disengage with little to no warning. My wellness isn't worth your ego trip. I encourage pre-round questions. I might suggest you look over my paradigm, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't ask questions.
Finally, I find Cheetos really annoying in classrooms, especially when people are using keyboards. It's the dust. Don't test my Cheeto tolerance. I'm not joking, anything that has the dust sets me off. Cheetos, Takis, all that stuff. I get that it's delicious, but keep it the hell out of the academy.
I debated at Westlake. I did the nat circuit and stuff. Got some bids. Did virtual TOC. It sucked. I'm reasonably sure I know what i'm doing.

Preferences
1) I’m hyper tech <3
2) speech docs if u suck at spreading (ill be the judge of it)
3) ill vote off of whatever, just weigh and please clash so I don't have to intervene
4) I flow very detailed so don't try and pull something dumb bc ill dock speaks.
5) Don’t pull some east coast sh*t and read new stuff in 2nd FF, if I think your trying to trick me i will not hesitate to down u lol.
6) I don't care about cards, I wont call for them unless I am told to. Evidence debate sucks.
7) Frontline in 2nd rebuttal. I wont evaluate new frontlines in 2nd summary. (people that do this really piss me off.)
8) If you get card dumped upon, group them. I wont feel bad for u if you get dumped and can't group. That's your fault.
9) Defense is STICKY
10) I wouldn't call myself a K hack, but I will def err on the side of K
Specific things: (Competence 1-5)
Framework: 5
I like a good framework debate and I’m okay with voting for any framework you tell me to vote under. Key points come down to which team presents the best model for debate, their justifications, nuances of the weighing mechanism, and probably win an external impact. You should probably be leveraging arguments off of case. Framing is sticky if dropped.
T: 2.5
I won't necessarily default to competing interps, reasonability, or other frameworks, etc. There are general parts of T (interp, violation, standards-voters, impacts, etc). If you go for T, then give me thorough reasons to vote for T. On aff, I think it is strategic that you can make theory or pre-fiat arguments that precede Topicality.
Theory: 4.5
If you run any theory (especially if it’s what you decide to go for), just flesh it out.
Disclosure good.
Kritiks: 4
I think that PF definitely has room for Kritikal arguments to be read. K args are definitely topic specific in PF. However, please set up these forms of arguments correctly and don't read it just because you think it'll pick up my ballot. I consider myself to be a K debater, so ill know the lit and if ur case is bad :)
Word Pic's: 4.5
I love it, just make sure its legitimate. I definitely think PF needs to become more aware and improving the norms are good.
Tricks: 3
If you decide to run tricks I cant promise i'll get it - pls make sure its straightforward and explained/extended. Tricks are not sticky (lol)
Speed: 5
I'm cool with speed, if you go past 350, send speech docs. Ill yell clear if i cant understand you. DON'T GO FAST IF YOU CANT PRONOUNCE WORDS. Going fast but being bad doesn't make u cool, if u can't do it well - don't do it at all.
Speaks:
I think speaks are broken and suffer from inherent bias. That being said i will give 30's to everyone unless you say something racist, homophobic, or generally anything that can make someone feel unwelcome or unsafe.
TLDR: I don't care what you do. If you read a cool K i'm more likely to vote for it. Don't go past 350 wpm. Don't go past 200 if you suck at pronouncing stuff. cheers, have fun, don't be offensive. ill give 30's.
LINCOLN DOUGLAS:
ill evaluate anything, go as fast as you want - if u pass 350 send me speech docs.
I like LARP, K'S and theory.
I'm semi-comfy with non-t/performance affs.
I love word piks, or a technicality debate.
cheers, have fun.
I (used to) debate at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) in Austin, Texas as a 2N. I also (used to) debate for Texas as a 2N (for one tournament).
Put me on the email chain: alexandreahuang@gmail.com
Do what you do best and I will judge it to the best of my ability. When I competed, I always believed the best decisions were rendered exclusively based on the words that came out of the debaters' mouths. I will try my best not to intervene unless it becomes an absolute necessity so the tournament can go on.
Stuff about me:
Neg leaning on most theory, but feel free to go for condo, my partner and I went for it pretty often.
Exclusively went for framework versus K affs.
Read some Ks on the negative, but my bread and butter are DAs and CPs.
I would rather you read re-highlightings than inserting them.
Good luck, have fun, stick to your (non-violent) guns!
LASA 21, Northwestern 25
Put me on the email chain: monicaelise.mej@gmail.com
I debated for 5 years at LASA debate and was coached by Yao Yao Chen and Mason Marriott-Voss. My thoughts on debate are very similar to theirs. I qualified to the TOC and the last year I debated was 2019-2020.
TLDR:
I am fine with basically everything, don't over adapt and do what you do best. I value argument explanation, so please take the time to explain your arguments. This also tends to make me more truth>tech than other judges. I am fine with speed. Don't say stuff that's racist/sexist/homophobic/ableist etc. (but also don't accuse the other team of doing this if they didn't.)
Theory
I lean aff on condo, but in general for condo to be viable for the aff I would like for the aff team to spend more time on it and actually respond to the negatives arguments. In general this is true for theory and everything else. I will probably not vote for you if you aren't responding to your opponents arguments and just reading blocks, but this tends to come up the most in theory debates. I lean neg on agent CPs, Advantage CPs, PICs out of the plan, and anything with aff specific solvency advocates. I tend to lean aff on process CPs, kicking planks, and CPs with no solvency advocate. I am ok with 2NC CPs if there is a reasonable explanation for them. I would like to see more teams be creative with theory; ie use it to justify a perm or as a reason the counterplan doesn't solve rather than just going for reject the team.
Topicality
I don't like evaluating T debates so please only go for T if there is an actual violation and you have a good interp and vision for the topic. This is the argument that I need y'all to explain the most, because it is very topic specific and I will probably not have the context of camp debates and thoughts that y'all do. This is where I think y'all should be doing the most clash and indepth answering the other teams arguments so that I know what is going on.
Policy Affs
I prefer judging affs that have solvency advocates and scenarios that actually relate to each other. The more specific your advantage and solvency advocate the more happy I am. I also wish the neg would take more advantage of how awful many policy affs are and how little their cards say. A good case debate can take out most risk of the aff for me and make it very easy for the neg to win.
Counterplans
I enjoy specific case specific counterplans more than generic counterplans. If you have to run a generic counterplan please at least contextualize to the aff in your explanation. You should have a solvency advocate. I am not a fan of process cps with an internal net benefit. That goes doubly for delay counterplans.
Disads
Disads also require more explanation than debaters often give them. I would really appreicate if more people would spend their time spinning their evidence, especially their link because I know its hard to have aff specific link cards. I also think its often important for the neg to set up multiple links and then chose the best ones in the late debate because it makes it much harder for the aff. I am not the biggest fan for Rider DAs but everything else is fine. Affs should compare how contrived the da is in comparison to aff scenarios.
Kritiks
I am not super familiar with K literature, so I will need you to explain your k. I also think that a K should have specific links to the aff. Similar to the disad section I don't really care if your card is answering the aff but you need to explain how the aff links based on what your link card says. I am harder to convince on structural arguments, but if you put in effort to explain them and apply it to the aff I'll vote for them. I think the best links are to the core ideas of the aff, either being the action of the plan or the core reps of the aff. I am generally skeptical about whether the alt does anything so please explain the more material implementation of the alt. I also think more aff teams should call out alts that are clearly utopian.
Kritikal Affs
Similar to what I said about Ks, I am probably not going to know what your aff is about. I have very limited knowledge on K literature and that is even more true for K affs. Your evidence should defend the same thing and be related to each other, I am going to be even more confused if your evidence is from a dozen different arguments and doesn't clearly connect. You really need to take the time to explain your aff and contextualize it to the topic (this will help you on the framework debate). The neg should try to engage the aff, I get it if you can't if you've never seen anything like it before, but you at least need to engage with the content of the aff at some point in the debate even if it is on framework. I will probably be very lost in K v K debates, but I will do my best just make sure to have very good explanations and don't rely on me having any prior knowledge.
Framework
I am not a huge fan of the fairness impact. I don't think that it can't be used convincingly, but I have yet to hear an explanation that doesn't just feel like two teams reading fairness blocks against each other. I think clash/research impacts on framework tend to be the best, but I am pretty open to anything. I think you should do impact analysis on them though. You should be specific about the ground you have lost, what the TVA is, and how the aff's content could exist in debate in another form. Also please respond to the aff's arguments and disads. The worst and most frustrating Framework debates are when teams just read blocks against each other.
Hey y’all!
I’m Anastasia/Ana – Westlake LD '23, Baylor Policy '27 (2A/1N primarily)
In High School, I got to three bid rounds and went to TFA all four years, i was in elims Junior/Senior year.
If you're interested in debating in college, Baylor has a great team with a ton of resources! Email me if you're just scrolling through tab, or talk to me before/after round and I can connect you with the coaching staff.
Pronouns – she/her
General:
Please be nice to each other! Debate is a fun activity & should be treated as such, your opponents pronouns & triggers are non-negotiables and not complying with either will result in an L0. Safety > any round win ever. We are all human and deserve to be treated with the respect as such.
fine with speed just slow down on analytics, I flow on my laptop for reference.
please send all docs – prefer speech drop but email is anastasiaskeeler@gmail.com
In high school, I exclusively read the K post-sophomore year. Before that, I did soft-left policy debate, and throughout my career enjoyed going for T. I have not done any topic research and am not actively coaching high school. Please explain super specific link scenarios slightly more than you would with active coaches.
if you want more specifics of how i think about debate look to Holden Bukowsky's paradigm - they coached me for the majority of my career & we think about debate very similarly.
Specific thoughts:
policy:
I think policy debate is cool. A lot of nuanced debates have been super interesting to watch & be a part of, but the same 3 affs and disads on every topic gets boring. I love creative advocacies and a good impact turn debate.
Some of my favorite speeches to give are a 2n on an impact turn (spark and dedev being my go-tos)
Please, for the love of God, weigh. This largely applies to any novice rounds/ less experienced debaters – but regardless, 15+ seconds of impact calc will get you much higher speaks.
T/theory:
Once you get into more blippy/tricky shells I will be fairly lost, if you go for the shell I need a clear explanation of the abuse story and why I should vote on it/the norm it would create.
I don’t have defaults for paradigm issues – being in policy has made my threshold for justifications lower. That being said, don't assume I don't need justifications for DTA/D, or CI/reasonability, you just don't need to 5 point everything.
Ks:
This is what I do the most, I am the most comfortable evaluating this kind of debate & would love to judge this.
Familiar with just about everything. For reference, I went for cap on the aff and neg my senior year, grove as a 2n and 2a this season, and dabbled in Baudrillard, Setcol, Delueze, Disability (kolorova, mollow, etc) and Beller in high school.
Doing policy has raised my threshold for explanation significantly: I think a good portion of K debate can be done on the theory of power page using your offense to do line by line. Please make my life easy.
Phil:
I am familiar with a lot of ethical framing args and Phil positions. just explain everything and make sure that what you are saying actually makes sense - ie your ethic + meta ethic and how the framing operates in the round
That being said, the way that phil gets executed now is something I am infinitely less comfortable with, the one paragraph of framing and then a bunch of blips. I am going to need you to go slower & give more explanation for these positions.
Tricks:
I dont like these. If you read these i will probably sigh loudly. I can eval them but speaks will be low and i will be sad.
Have fun & be nice! Looking forward to judging y'all :)

Hi, I'm Andrew. I did 4 years of LD debate, with 3 of those years on the national circuit. (I also did some PF for the memes.) Now I sometimes do parli for fun because policy is too much work.

Speaks scale: http://www.policydebate.net/points-scale.html
LD
I used to have a really long paradigm here but the more I judge, the more I realize that my personal opinions on things really have very little influence on how I judge. As such, I'll just say that I'm open to anything with a warrant except for arguments that violate the rules I've put below, since I don't think that I as a judge should impose my subjective notions of what I believe to be "good" debate upon debaters. I genuinely do not care what arguments you read as long as they're not objectionable, and will attempt to evaluate all arguments as fairly as possible.
Rules:
1] CX is binding
2] speech times, one winner one loser of the round
3] if you stake the round on evidence ethics I will award W30 if you win and L20 if you lose the challenge
4] no racism/homophobia/etc.
I will listen to both traditional and progressive arguments. I am okay with some speed, but make sure it's clear. If you're not clear, I will stop flowing the round. Please speak clearly. I'm a fan of philosophical theory, but the empirical evidence also needs to be there. Framework is key. I can't vote for you if your framework falls. I'm open to K's, plans, and counter-plans. Finally, tell me why you should win the round. Voters are very important. Debate your style, and I will objectively weigh arguments.
Love to be on the chain.... sfadebate@gmail.com
LD---TOC---2024
I'm a traditional leaning policy judge – No particular like/dislike for the Value/Criterion or Meta-Ethic/Standard structure for framework just make sure everything is substantially justified, not tons of blippy framework justifications.
Disads — Link extensions should be thorough, not just two words with an author name. I'm a sucker for good uniqueness debates, especially on a topic where things are changing constantly.
Counterplans — Counterplans should be textually and functionally competitive but I'm willing to change my mind if competition evidence is solid. I love impact/nb turns and think they should be utilized more. Not a fan of ‘intrinsic perms’.
Kritiks — I default to letting the aff weigh case but i'm more than willing to change my mind given a good framework/link push from the negative. I’m most familiar with: Cap, Biopolitics, Nietzsche, and Security. I'm fine voting for other lit bases but my threshold is higher especially for IdPol, SetCol, and High Theory. Not a fan of Baudrillard but will vote on it if it is done well.
K Affs — I'm probably 40/60 on T. If a K aff has a well explained thesis and good answers to presumption I am more than willing to vote on it. A trend I see is many negative debaters blankly extending fairness and clash arguments without substantial policymaking/debate good evidence. I default to thinking debate and policymaking are good but I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise absent a compelling 2NR.
Topicality — Big fan of good T debates, really dislike bad T debates. I don't like when teams read contradictory interps in the 1NC, you should have good T evidence, and I like a good caselist. Preferably the whole 2NR is T.
Theory — Not a fan of frivolous shells but i'm willing to be convinced on any interp given a good explanation of the abuse story. I default to In-round-abuse, reasonability, and have a high threshold for RVIs.
Phil — As an Ex-Policy Debater, my knowledge here is very limited. I'm willing to vote on it if it's very well warranted and clearly winning on the flow. But in a relatively equal debate I think I will always default to Util.
Tricks — Don't
edited for LD 2022-3
I have not judged a lot of LD recently. I more than likely have not heard the authors you are talking about please make sure you explain them along with your line by line. Long overviews are kind of silly and argumentation on the line by line is a better place for things Overview doesn't mean I will automatically put your overview to it. If you run tricks I am really not your judge. I think they are silly and will probably not vote for them. I have a high threshold for voting on theory arguments either way.

Speak clearly and passionately. I hate rehash, so if you bring in new evidence and clash you will go farther in the round than having a structured speech halfway to late in debate. I appreciate speakers that keep the judges and audience engaged, so vocal patterns and eye contact matter. The most important thing to me is accurate and well developed arguments and thoughtful questions. For presiding officer: run a tight ship. Be quick, efficient, fair, and keep accurate precedents and recency. This is congressional debate, not congressional speech giving, so having healthy debate and competition is necessary. Being disrespectful in round will get you no where with me, so make sure to respect everyone in the room at all times.
Edited 20-21
Don't ask about speaks you should be more concerned with how to do better in the future. If you ask I will go back and dock your speaks at least 2 points.

Examples of your arguments will be infinitely more persuasive than analogies. Please weigh your arguments as it is appropriate. Be nice, there is a difference between arrogance and excellence
Edited for PF 2018-9
I have been judging for 20 years any numerous debate events. Please be clear; the better your internal link chain the better you will do. I am not a big fan of evidence paraphrasing. I would rather hear the authors words not your interpretation of them. Make sure you do more than weighing in the last two speeches. Please make comparison in your arguments and evidence. Dont go for everything. I usually live in an offense defense world there is almost always some risk of a link. Be nice if you dont it will affect your speaks
Edited for 2014-15 Topic
I will listen to just about any debate but if there isnt any articulation of what is happening and what jargon means then I will probably ignore your arguments. You can yell at me but I warned you. I am old and crotchety and I shouldn't have to work that hard.
CXphilosophy = As a preface to the picky stuff, I'd like to make a few more general comments first. To begin with, I will listen to just about any debate there is out there. I enjoy both policy and kritik debates. I find value in both styles of debate, and I am willing to adapt to that style. Second, have fun. If you're bored, I'm probably real bored. So enjoy yourself. Third, I'm ok with fast debates. It would be rare for you to completely lose me, however, you spew 5 minutes of blocks on theorical arguments I wont have the warrants down on paper and it will probably not be good for you when you ask me to vote on it. There is one thing I consider mandatory: Be Clear. As a luxury: try to slow down just a bit on a big analytical debate to give me pen time. Evidence analysis is your job, and it puts me in a weird situation to articulate things for you. I will read evidence after many rounds, just to make sure I know which are the most important so I can prioritize. Too many teams can't dissect the Mead card, but an impact takeout is just that. But please do it all the way- explain why these arguments aren't true or do not explain the current situation. Now the picky stuff:
Affs I prefer affs with plan texts. If you are running a critical aff please make sure I understand what you are doing and why you are doing it. Using the jargon of your authors without explaining what you are doing won't help me vote for you.
Topicality and Theory- Although I certainly believe in the value of both and that it has merit, I am frustrated with teams who refuse to go for anything else. To me, Topicality is a check on the fringe, however to win a procedural argument in front of me you need specific in round abuse and I want you to figure out how this translates into me voting for you. Although I feel that scenarios of potential abuse are usually not true, I will vote for it if it is a conceded or hardly argued framework or if you can describe exactly how a topic or debate round would look like under your interpretation and why you have any right to those arguments. I believe in the common law tradition of innocence until proven guilty: My bias is to err Aff on T and Negative on Theory, until persuaded otherwise.
Disads- I think that the link debate is really the most significant. Im usually willing to grant negative teams a risk of an impact should they win a link, but much more demanding linkwise. I think uniqueness is important but Im rarely a stickler for dates, within reason- if the warrants are there that's all you need. Negatives should do their best to provide some story which places the affirmative in the context of their disads. They often get away with overly generic arguments. Im not dissing them- Reading the Ornstein card is sweet- but extrapolate the specifics out of that for the plan, rather than leaving it vague.
Counterplans- The most underrated argument in debate. Many debaters don't know the strategic gold these arguments are. Most affirmatives get stuck making terrible permutations, which is good if you neg. If you are aff in this debate and there is a CP, make a worthwhile permutation, not just "Do Both" That has very little meaning. Solvency debates are tricky. I need the aff team to quantify a solvency deficit and debate the warrants to each actor, the degree and necessity of consultation, etc.
Kritiks- On the aff, taking care of the framework is an obvious must. You just need good defense to the Alternative- other than that, see the disad comments about Link debates. Negatives, I'd like so practical application of the link and alternative articulated. What does it mean to say that the aff is "biopolitical" or "capitalist"? A discussion of the aff's place within those systems is important. Second, some judges are picky about "rethink" alternatives- Im really not provided you can describe a way that it could be implemented. Can only policymakers change? how might social movements form as a result of this? I generally think its false and strategically bad to leave it at "the people in this debate"- find a way to get something changed. I will also admit that at the time being, Im not as well read as I should be. I'm also a teacher so I've had other priorities as far as literature goes. Don't assume I've read the authors you have.
Update for online tournaments:
Please slow down and make an extra effort to be clear for these rounds online. I will not call clear online since then we miss some of what you are saying.
I did LD for three years at Cy-Fair HS outside of Houston, Texas, qualifying to the TOC and NSDA nationals, and reaching semifinals at TFA state. I worked for McNeil HS in Austin while attending the University of Texas, and I teach at NSD and TDC.
Conflicts: McNeil HS, Cy-Fair HS, Lovejoy KC, Pembroke Pines MC
TL/DR:
I'd rather evaluate your style of debate than have you do things you're not comfortable with because you think it's what I want. My paradigm is here so you get an idea of how you want to pref me and how to debate in front of me, not to dissuade you from any particular type of debate.
Feel free to ask me questions at cameronmcconway@gmail.com.
If I am judging you at 8 am or late after a long day of rounds, please make an extra effort to be clear and organized. I'm tired and I want to make sure I can evaluate the debate as best as possible, so this is in your best interest!
The trend of taking forever to send speech docs (and then wait for everyone to download them) is extremely annoying. I haven't figured out the best way to check this, so for now I'm asking that you come to round with the aff ready to send, and have docs ready to send as soon as prep ends before the NC. If you think you might have wifi trouble or problems with your email, a flash drive would speed this process up.
General:
I will vote on most arguments as long as they aren't morally objectionable or blatantly false. I will do my best to be tab, but I think there is a level of plausibility necessary for me to vote on an argument (for instance, I won't vote on an obviously false I-meet). It will be difficult to convince me to vote on a super blippy apriori or an argument that turned into a voting issue after being one line in the original speech.
I'd like to be on the email chain in case I need to look at a card, but I will flow you not the speech doc.
Speed:
I'm fine with speed, just slow down on tags/author names and interps/advocacy texts.
T/Theory:
I am comfortable evaluating theory under whichever paradigm you prefer, so long as you justify it. I have found that I enjoy a good theory debate where there is a lot of weighing and internal links.
I am not a fan of disclosure debates, especially when the violation is unverifiable or the wiki was down. That said, there is a difference between a debate about disclosure vs a debate over open source or round reports, and I would much prefer the former.
Ks:
I read both high theory and identity politics. I feel comfortable evaluating most K debates but I strongly prefer debaters err on the side of overexplaining/not relying on jargon rather than assuming that I am familiar with the literature they are reading. These debates tend to either be excellent or my least favorite.
I enjoy K affs, but I do think if you are nontopical you need to a) win that being nontopical is legitimate b) have an evaluative mechanism and c) have offense under that mechanism. I am happy to listen to unique/innovative K affs regardless of their topicality, though I am also happy to listen to T debates against them. I think these can be interesting debates.
Recent observation: I find positions that rely on premises like "performative contradictions good" or "debate itself bad" to be unpersuasive. Not positions that criticize the current iteration of competitive debate (I am fine with that), but rather I think there is inherent value to the act of debating. This doesn't mean I won't vote on high theory authors like Baudrillard, because I will and I have, but I do think your interpretation of these authors should be compatible with your performance.
LARP:
I think that high level LARP debates tend to be more difficult to evaluate because a lot of debaters do not do sufficient weighing or impact calc. I enjoy well done LARP debates, just please do good weighing.
Framework:
I enjoy framework debate more the longer I judge. Slow down a bit on long analytic dumps and err towards overexplaining the dense philosophical warrants, because these things are difficult to flow at your top speed.
Speaks:
I start around a 28.5 and go up or down depending on in-round strategy and skill relative to the tournament. Speaks tend to be over-inflated and relatively arbitrary, so I try to give speaks with influencing who clears in mind. I like speaks as a way to reward well-executed or particularly clever strategies.
i did ld for two years at westlake high school

i'm more of a flow judge and i don't like doing work so i prob won't evaluate an argument unless it's clearly extended
probably most familiar with larp and theory debate but any args are fine as long as you flush them out properly (i hate phil debates tho and am really bad at evaluating them)
layer ur args and warrant why you're winning in the top layer. give me a big picture analysis at the end and explain to me why you're winning; essentially write my ballot for me
fine w/ speed but if i say clear twice and u don't slow down or speak clearly then i will stop flowing; im usually pretty generous with speaks but i have a really low threshold for debaters being rude and/or aggressive to me or their opponent and i WILL give u low speaks if you say anything problematic
please give trigger warnings; also i don't do well with any extremely graphic depictions of rape and sexual violence
larp:
- DAs: pretty much fine with anything as long as you have a proper link story and clear impact calculus
- plans/cps/pics: pls do comparative worlds weighing; i think these are strategic and mainly what i ran in hs so i'm fine with really anything
Ks:
- fine with anything as long as they are well warranted; explain why voting for the k actually matters
- PIKs: open to PIKs good/bad debate, i don't have a default on this
- pls do work with the alt and explain the methodology; i have a low threshold when alt isn't warranted
- k affs are cool just explain to me why it's relevant to vote aff and why your topic or method is better
performance:
- i think performances are really cool and meaningful in the debate space; just explain why i should endorse the performance and also pls have good warrants
theory:
- really low threshold for friv theory
- don't spread your interps and have a strong warrant on your abuse story
t/framework:
- i think t debate is valid but i definitely will buy an abuse story off the neg if it is warranted
- pls pls pls explain why your fw matters more and what my role is as the judge; i think framework debates get really messy and i don't like doing work so please weigh
phil:
- sorry i don't like phil debate and i'm pretty bad at evaluating these types of rounds
- if you're reading dense phil please slow down and explain to me the argument like im 5 lol
tricks:
- i don't like them and idk how to evaluate them
good luck everyone! i know debate can be a toxic and negative space sometimes so if you ever need to leave the round please just let me know; mental health comes first
If you get me as a debate judge, sorry in advance.
--Congress--
3 points, or 2 points with GOOD analysis and GOOD GOOD clash.
3 pieces of evidence minimum, 5 preferred.
Do not re-hash arguments. If you do, you better be clash clash clashing at the same time.
PO’s can earn high ranks by advancing the round and showing they are in charge. Pulling power plays and asking me for help? Not great.
--Speech--
Extemp/Info/OO: use an entertaining AGD and tie it through the roadmap, and topic sentence/conclusion of each point.
Extemp: This is state. 6 sources.
Info/OO: 3+ pieces of evidence.
Teasers hype up your Interp pieces. Use them!
Block block blocking: Utilize your space and move! I know that this is a virtual world, but there are ways to do it.
Over the top funny pieces... are sometimes not funny.
Fine with curse words!
I debated at Lake Travis High School for 4 years (2015-2019). I did mostly LD, but have some experience in PF, Policy, and even Congress. I debated TFA, UIL, NSDA, and TOC circuits. I ran a lot of queer theory, ableism, and LatCrit.
Put me on the email chain blake.a.ochoa@gmail.com
For PF
You can run whatever you want but don't think that because I'm an LD judge I will hack for theory or other progressive arguments. If anything it is a strong uphill battle because you will have so little time to flesh out a shell. If you think genuine abuse occurred you are better off just saying that on case than trying to read a full shell.
I need the summary and final focus to write my ballot for me. Tell me what you are winning and why it outweighs. If you don't do these things then I will have to try to figure it out myself and you are less likely to like my conclusion than if you just tell me how stuff breaks down.
You can go moderately fast but if you are just trying to go fast to scare/keep your opponent from engaging you won't get good speaks.
Refer to the speaker point scale and procedural things below, most of it still applies to PF.
Be nice and have fun!
Short Version
I will vote on anything as long as I get a clear explanation of it, but frivolous theory/tricks will be a steep uphill battle for you. I did mostly K debate, but I am well experienced in LARP, Theory, and traditional stuff as well. I won’t hack for you just because you read a K. Impact everything to a framing mechanism. I like to have a very clear explanation of what argument operates on what layer of the debate. If you go over 350 wpm you run the risk of me missing arguments. I’ll say slow/clear/fast/loud twice before it affects your speaks. I give speaks based on strategy, but being polite is a side constraint. Be nice and have fun!
Speed
I did circuit debate, so I have a decent understanding of speed, that being said slow down on important texts, analytics, and dense T/Theory analysis. If you flash me evidence I don’t care how fast you read the evidence as long as you aren’t clipping. I probably cap out around 350-400 wpm, so I might miss things over that. If you make a winning argument at that speed and I miss it, that’s your fault, not mine.
K
Note: I’m ok with 1AR K’s, but for convenience I will use neg speech titles
This was my favorite kind of argument to read in high school, but for that reason it is wise to ensure you are familiar with any K lit before you read it in front of me. I will judge based on how you articulate the argument, but I might look frustrated when you say incorrect things. I have a MUCH better understanding of identity K’s than high theory stuff, but both need to be clearly explained by the end of the 2N. I feel iffy about PIKs in general, if you want to read a PIK in front of me make it clear why perm doesn’t solve in the NC. To vote on K’s I need a clear link, impact to a framing mechanism, and a thorough explanation of the alt. If you wind up kicking the alt and going for the K as a linear DA, I will hold the link explanation to a higher standard.
T/Theory
Note: I’m ok with 1AR theory, but for convenience I will use neg speech titles
I have a strong understanding of how T/Theory functions, but I didn’t read it much, so if you are going for nuanced/ specific offense make your analysis twice as clear as you normally would. I will definitely vote if I see clear abuse, but frivolous theory will likely get an eye roll and higher expectations of what your analysis has to accomplish. I think in-round abuse outweighs potential abuse. If you go for norm-setting arguments it will be harder or you to win the theory flow (You need to win why you winning this particular round will set a norm). I will always look to paradigm issues before I analyze what happened on the T/Theory flow proper, so don’t waste your time going for a shell if you are gonna concede drop the argument. I DO NOT like a 1AR collapse to RVIs. If this is your best option in a round, go for it but I will be bored and sad.
Tricks
I have a complicated relationship with tricks. I guess I would vote for them if they are conceded, but you won’t get very high speaks because I don’t think that there is much educational value to debates that come down to “They conceded the B subpoint of the second justification of the 5th presumption spike.” That’s gross.
Basically if you want me to vote for tricks that are piffy and serve no purpose other than to confuse your opponent, I’m not down. If you supplement tricks with something more in depth go for it.
The only scenario in which I will drop you for tricks is if your opponent has a disability that is explained and you STILL go for tricks after that explanation is made.
DA
If I am going to vote on a DA with no advocacy associated I need a strong explanation of a solid link and an impact to a framing mechanism with reasons why it outweighs. I don’t think there is much else to say here.
CP
I like interesting counterplan debates, meaning that the more nuanced/fleshed out your CP the better. I think it is important that the CP text itself makes sense and isn’t a paragraph long. PICs are ok but please make them distinct enough from the affirmative to keep the debate interesting (like actor changes are fine but delay/consult Cps make me sad). I need a net benefit, solvency advocate, and an extended CP text to vote on it. A conceded perm is damning so don’t concede perms please.
Phil
My understanding of philosophical frameworks is pretty average. I have a good grasp on Kant, Hobbes, Butler, and other common stuff, but if you are going beyond the normal stuff, that’s fine but PLEASE explain it clearly. Regurgitating buzzwords will make me go “>:( .” As long as I can use your framework as an impact filter, you’re good. I do, however have an ethical problem with tricky framework for the sake of being tricky for the same reason I think Tricks debates aren’t educational. To clarify, if you can’t explain the framework to a fifth grader in the time of cx, it’s too tricky. Also, if your framework justifies morally reprehensible things and you defend those things, I won’t vote for you and your speaks will suffer.
Value/Criterion
Although I did a lot of circuit debate, I still really appreciate a good value/criterion traditional debate. Framework analysis is much more important in traditional debates, but I don’t think reading a counter framework is necessary. However, I want every impact to be contextualized in terms of some criterion/standard. If you don’t articulate why your impact outweighs your opponent, I will have to intervene and then no one will be happy.
Speaks
30-29 Seriously impressed
29-28 Pretty good, you should break
27-28 Some glaring strategy issues
27-25 Your strat was DOA or you said something overtly problematic or mean
25-0 You were so rude/ problematic that it made the debate feel unsafe
- If you make me think about the debate space/society in a different/enlightening way I will slightly inflate your speaks
Procedural Things
Here are my defaults, the lower on the list they are the less time it needs to change my mind
- Role of the ballot is the highest layer of framework
- Case can be cross applied to T/Theory
- No RVIs
- Reasonability
- Drop the argument
I do NOT have a default for layering offs (K before T, etc) so you NEED to do this analysis in front of me
I am generally tech/truth unless you are just lying (like saying that global warming isn’t real)
I will be disappointed/drop speaks if you do this
- Not clearly answering cx questions (especially status of advocacies and what layer comes first)
- Are occasionally rude (sass is ok, but teasing is not)
- Not giving content warnings before possibly triggering arguments are made
I will drop you if you do this
- Say or do anything explicitly exclusionary
- Act egregiously rude or blatantly mean towards your opponent (if you don’t know if what you do is ‘egregious’ or not it probably is)
Hello. I debated in PF for 3 years from 2017-2020 for Westlake High School, Texas. I competed on the national circuit during my last year.
Tech > Truth. I think debate is a game.
If anything is confusing on here or if you have any questions, just ask me before round.
*For online rounds: Please do not prep without timing while the other team is looking for cards/having technical difficulties. Be fair and honest, time your prep.
1. Argumentation. I was mostly a substance debater so this is what I am most comfortable with. That being said, I do not care what you run as long as it is explained to me (although I would definitely prefer substance arguments). Again, I am tech > truth so you can say extinction good and I will buy if it is explained well. I have experience running extinction framing if that is something that interests you. I understand the basic functions of theory and K's, but I am not well-versed in the lit. You can run those progressive arguments if you like and I will evaluate as best as I can, but just keep in mind that I'll have some trouble if you are going fast and not explaining things well for these types of arguments. It's just hard for me to follow and conceptualize these more progressive arguments, but I don't want to stop you from reading progressive arguments if that is what interests you. If you do like reading wacky substance arguments, go for it, I'm all ears.
2. Speed. I enjoyed going fast while debating and I can handle some speed, but I never was the fastest flow-er so try not to go too fast. I should be fine with most PF speed. Going fast is your choice and I'll try my best to keep up, but there is always a chance that I miss the nuance or specific warranting when you're speaking fast.
3. Extensions/weigh. Please make sure you are extending all parts of your argument (links, warrants, impacts, and anything in between). If you extend your link but no impact, it will be very hard to evaluate. Also, extensions or any argument has to be in both summary and final focus for me to evaluate it. However, don't spend all your time extending, just extend and continue. If something is dropped and the other team extends it, I will consider it as conceded. Also, frontline your case in 2nd rebuttal, otherwise the defense will be conceded. Defense is not sticky. Don't bring up new arguments in summary and final focus and expect me to count it as extensions. Weighing is also VERY good and will win you rounds. I know weighing can sometimes be hard and messy, but try your best. Conceded weighing stands true.
4. Card Calling. I think calling for cards as a judge is interventionist, however, evidence ethics is also extremely important. I will only call for a card if I am explicitly told to in a speech. If there is a piece of evidence you want me to look at, tell me in a speech, and I will look at the place that you tell me to look at. I try not to intervene, but I want to be fair, so if something is not right, just tell me in a speech and explain why.
5. Presumption. I will try to make a decision to the best of my ability. If there is nothing I can possibly vote on and I have to presume, then I will presume neg because it is the least interventionist (the aff's burden is to disprove the neg). However, if you want me to presume any other way (1st or aff or whatever), just warrant why in a speech.
6. Disclosing. I will always disclose unless I am not supposed to. I will try and give oral feedback and I will write less on the ballot, so write down what I am saying if you don't want to forget. If you want to ask questions or anything, go for it, just try to be chill. I won't be mad or hold it against you, I think questions are good and will help everyone learn more.
7. Speaks. I would say that I generally give higher speaks, and I will give 30s to great speakers. Some tournaments are trying to standardize speaks, so I try my best to adjust to what the tournament speaks call for.
8. Other notes. Please, please signpost otherwise I might miss something trying to figure out where you are on the flow. Try to be nice during round to make it more fun, but I understand if things get heated and won't dock speaks unless you are being blatantly rude. Don't be sexist, homophobic, racist, or anything of the sort. I sometimes make motions such as nodding my head or giving a questioning look, but I try not to be distracting. Use this to your advantage to see if I'm vibing with what you are saying or not. I never vote on cross, but I may occasionally listen if I am interested. Time yourselves and your opponents so there is no confusion. I would prefer that you flip when I am present just so if there is any disagreement I can help resolve it. If both teams want to flip before, I don't really care. Also, I am not coaching or prepping topics, so I won't have the topic knowledge as other judges might have, so take that as you will (I will usually catch on pretty quick).
Hey I'm Abhinav Rachakonda (he/they) and I competed in LD for three years (2017 - 2020) at Westlake High School in both TFA and TOC tournaments. The most important thing is to read what you're comfortable with and not to drastically change your case based on this paradigm. Feel free to ask me anything before the round starts that isn't covered here. I don't care much for debate formalities like whether you sit or stand, just do whatever makes you comfortable.
Add me to the doc: abhinav.rachakonda@gmail.com
General Stuff
Please tell me why I should vote for you. Do all the weighing yourself so I won't have to. I will default tech > truth, T/Theory > K, competing interps > reasonability unless you tell me otherwise in round.
I'm fine with speed. Slow down while reading tags, and while extending. I will shout "clear" once, but after that, I flow what I can hear.
Just don't be problematic and extend your arguments. If you're being disrespectful in any way to your opponent I will call you out on it. Trigger warnings are important. I will let you pause your timer mid-round if you forget at the start.
Tabroom said it best: "Be mature and good people".
Theory (1)
I was a big theory debater so I don't think there's such a thing as frivolous theory. Most theory shells are silly and stupid (I used to run stupid things like Date Accessed and Must Spec Actor), but it's a fun debate to have, which is why I liked reading it. No theory is bad theory, but make sure your opponent actually violates.
- As I said before, I'll default to competing interps if you don't give me a reason not to.
- Please clearly explain the abuse in the round rather than just repeating your shell when extending
- When debating your opponent's counter standards, please do some weighing between standards.
- I won't default any way for the RVI / No RVI or the Drop the Debater / Drop the Arg debate, so that's your burden. Simply read paradigm issues.
- I like the Theory v K debate so don't shy away from it.
Topicality (1)
Weighing is even more important for T. Give me a reason to prefer your T over their non-T aff. This is especially important if you spend your entire 1N on T.
- Most non-T affs will usually have impact turns and other things designed to combat T. Make sure to respond to those.
LARP (1)
I also did a ton of LARP debate. Plans, CPs, PICs, DAs, all of them. The really creative plans and CPs will definitely increase your speaks.
- Again, weighing is really important (please do it!) so I don't have to choose which arguments to prefer. If you don't want to wait for your RFD, please do weighing.
- Explain the link chains to me like I don't know anything about the topic (because I don't!).
- PICs are a very powerful tool, but make sure it actually works against the aff your opponent read.
Tricks (1.5)
Don't try to be tricky by not explaining your tricks. I probably won't understand it and neither will your opponent. A good tricks debate is really fun to judge and analyze.
- Have all the tricks on the doc, and if you end up extemping them, still send a doc with the analytics you red.
- Spiked underviews are great. Have fun with them.
- Like theory, most tricks are stupid, but the debates are fun.
- Tricks v K and Tricks v Theory are very complex debates. You should ideally both engage with the K/Theory and give me reasons to prefer your tricks over it.
Phil/FW (2)
I was more of a techy FW debater and read Kant and Util. I have a beginner's knowledge of other authors but don't assume I know every caviat of your framing. Explain why I should use your framing.
- Give me examples of what your buzzwords mean.
- Don't try to BS your framework by using buzzwords. Especially with Kant and Util.
- Weighing (have I said this enough?) frameworks is a good thing to do. Please.
Kritiks (3)
I am not very well versed in Ks and only read the occasional Cap K here and there. I know a bit about Settler Colonialism and Baudrillard as well. That being said, feel free to read your Ks but explain to me clearly why I should vote for you.
- Tell me explicitly (when extending especially) how the aff links into your K. Most Ks I've encounted had some pretty sketchy links.
- Reading afro-pess when you aren't black is a bit sus, and I would strongly recommend against it. This applies to other pess args as well.
- Explain to me what the alt actually does. Why is it better than whatever your opponent has (whether it is their K alt or a plan)
- Again, don't shy away from the K v Theory debate. It's a fun debate.
Non-T Affs (4)
Yeah, so I've never read a non-T aff before in round. An explanation is your friend here.
- Explain why you read a non-T aff and what it actually does.
- I'm down to watch any performance affs, but you need to tell me why I should vote for it. Why is that better than a regular topical debate?
Traditional Debate (5)
I haven't encountered much traditional debate, but feel free to read it.
- Most of the traditional debate I've done has boiled down to value / value criterion debate, so please don't do that. Debating the topic goes a long way.
PF Paradigms
If I somehow end up judging PF, here it is. I haven't debated PF since one tournament in middle school. My PF knowledge mostly comes from judging practice PF rounds at Westlake. Jason Luo is someone who is a good PF judge (and a cool person) so look at his paradigms for further depth.
- Since I did LD, read all the progressive stuff you want to. Speed is also fine as long as I'm on the doc.
- Weighing. Do it.
Speaker Points
I will try to give speaks over a 28.5 every round, but if you do something abhorrent, it will be lower.
- Clipping. Don't do it. I will be on the doc.
- The "give both sides 30 speaks" argument will be evaluated if I feel it's done well enough.
- Be nice during CX.
- A good Marvel or Star Wars reference goes a long way. So do jokes.
Have fun, don't be a jerk. Debate can be a toxic place, but it doesn't have to be. If you have any mid-round crises / emergencies please communicate them to me and I will be understanding. At the end of the day, debate is a tool to have fun and become better people, nothing more.
I am a third year out and I did CX and LD at Austin SFA from 2015-2019.
I would like to be on the email chain - anevayel@gmail.com
General:
I have 0 preference for argumentative style (traditional, “progressive” etc). Yes I’m fine with whatever speed you want to go.
Tech/Truth: I default to tech on arguments I either have personal opinions about or don’t understand but please don’t mistake tech as just having more ink on the flow. I swing more towards truth in matters where whatever is being said is like common knowledge or a fact about current events etc.
I will not disclose your speaker points and I won’t give you a 30.
Speaker points are 60% strategy and quality of argumentation and 40% how clearly you spoke and your in round etiquette. I will give you the lowest points I can if you are nasty. Don’t be.
LD/CX:
Kritiks: Fantastic. Please make sure you understand it and you explain it clearly. I’m probably familiar with whoever you are reading so I wouldn’t downvote you because I don’t know/understand the author but the burden is still on you to explain and win their argument as if I don’t know who they are.
T: Please be mindful I have not judged many rounds on this LD or policy topic so I have 0 preconceived notions of what is T and what is not. You must give me a clear violation->impact story.
Theory: If you’re in LD or PF-I don’t evaluate theory. Ask me for clarifiers if you must. CX- do your thing but please don’t just spread through a bunch of blocks someone else likely wrote
Disads and Counterplans are great! Make your link stories specific! Please, don’t forget to debate about the aff!
PF:
Please be nice to each other. Don’t quote the TFA rules at me. Run whatever arguments you want but you absolutely must tell me a coherent story that is backed by your evidence.
UPDATE FOR WSD @ TFA:
WSD didn't exist when I was in high school, but I judge it almost exclusively now including into deep elims of TFA State, UT, and Berkeley so my experience is not null.
Big things for me: I like clash, I want yall to answer the question, and I reward good on the spot analysis of your opponents argument, don't get so caught up in your case that your forget to answer your opponent's argument. Also I am fine with speed, but I don't think its necessary in worlds and honestly I prefer speech's that are stylistic and given like a PA. Please let me know if you have any questions and congrats on making it to state!
IE: I am pretty open to any stylistic choices or preparations of a speech/script, it is an Interpretation after all, so creative choices are welcome!
Extemp- You should have ample amount of evidence for the three main claims you decide to make. Please have your speech as structured as possible as it makes it easier for me to follow along and judge. It’s better for your speech to run 5 minutes, but be clear and conscie than for you to stay up there for seven minutes rambling on.
OO/INFO- There should be at least three sources in your speech. I don’t mind when you try and break the very formulaic structure of OO or info, but I should be able to easily follow along. I.E. you dont have to go “But first, then, finally” but hey whatver works for you, works for me, speak clear, be confident, and have fun up there.
HI- Use your space, HI is about physical humor as much as its about the jokes you are telling! Racist/misogynistic/Xenophobia etc humor is not funny. It’s not.
DI- Be careful with your content, DI’s are serious and I understand that, but be careful with how graphic you get. I am not a squimish judge so curse words dont bother me and mature material is fine, just try and be as tasteful as possible. And DONT mis-represent a character I.E. if you are playing a forty year old mom who just suffered the loss of her son, thats fine, but if you are speaking for an identity you cannot identify with, maybe not. DONT USE SLURS. Even for effect. It’s not needed. Use the space and be comfortable with silence. There is a lot of pauses and silence in DI and when its intentional l it works really well, so dont be afraid of it!
PR/PO- Don’t let your binder fall flat. I don’t think there is one right way to hold the binder, but there are a million wrong ways. It’s awesome when you find a way to incorporate the binder for techy stuff, but its def not necessary.
Lingering thoughts..
Your teaser should give me a clue about what your piece is about, (AND IT SHOULD BE MEMORIZED) it doesnt have to be a summary, but a couple of lines to let me know where the piece ie headed is great!
TIME. Be concious of it. Don’t run 10:29 or 10:30, once the fist is up WRAP IT UP.
If you forget your piece, take a moment to pause and collect your thoughts, try not to show it in your face and dont worry about it too much.
Be respectful to other performers, if you are on your phone, eating loudly, sleeping, or being distracting in anyway. I might factor it into your rank. It’s not cool, respect eachothers work.
I debated for four years in Texas in PF and briefly in LD. I have a solid knowledge of critical arguments and theory. I currently compete for the Texas Speech Team in Extemp and all the Public Address Events.
My judging philosophy is pretty straightforward.
- Impact calculus is important to me, I want to see a clear weighing of both worlds, especially in the summary. With impacts, I prefer you give me clear material impacts on people, rather than just saying things like nuke war. Contextualize your impacts!
- I like clean, straight down the flow debate with a lot of clash. Sign-post during speeches.
- Not the biggest fan of card-debate. Use that time to make arguments rather than harp over minor things in cards!
- Make extensions that clearly tell me what exactly I'm supposed to extend, not just dropping a card name.
- If you introduce a new argument in the Summary, I won't evaluate it. Stick to extending already established offense/defense.
- I'm good with speed (just enunciate as much as you can) and pretty much all types of critical arguments.
- Be conscious of your positionality and how you treat others in round. Rounds can get intense but at the end of the day, debate should be a space that is safe and empowering for everyone involved.
In extemp, I value unified analysis, a solid demonstration of background/historical knowledge on the question, and confidence in delivery. Using substantial and diverse sourcing (so like in international speeches, don't only cite Western outlets) in each point while weaving in the analysis is a marker of a good speech for me.
For Duet, I don't want to see any unnecessary PDA.
Parent judge
(Her daughter, Rhea Biswas, wrote this paradigm for her)
She usually judges LD and OO at Houston locals; she'll be best with basic LARP/good VC weighing. Soft left positions (provided that they aren't jargon heavy) are also good with her.
Go heavy on the lay appeal/2ar ethos and don't speak absurdly fast, she'll say CLEAR if she needs you to speak slower/louder.
WEIGH! WEIGH! WEIGH! Give her a clear ballot story and she'll vote for you. Voters are your best friend!
Don't aggressively postround my mom. Seriously, don't. This is an awful, toxic norm in debate that neither of us have any sympathy for; she's trying her best and she's entitled to down your speaks significantly if she feels threatened.
I've told her that average speaks are around 28; it should be up or down from there. Also, she views CX as a clarification period for yall, not her - don't get too worked up abt this. Time yourself and your opponents (including prep) - she won't be keeping time.
I don't know that collapsing is the best idea in front of her- try to access a route to the ballot on every argument possible; that being said, if your opponent is being genuinely abusive she has and will buy well-warranted paragraph theory or GOOD, fleshed out collapses.
She tries to be as tab as it gets for a lay judge but keep in mind that she's fairly left; if you go for a trump good position or lose the SV debate LMAOOOOOO that's an L
Don't say anything racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, etc. If you're male, don't speak over your female opponents/ treat them as lesser. This should be a safe space for everyone and this will reflect in your speaks.
Be nice and have fun!
Good luck!
- Email her at madhurabiswas@gmail.com for specific questions. Add her to the email chain lol but know that she's not gonna read off of it for you
- tell her that you're friends w me for that perceptual dominance :)

Ideally I would like to be 1 for all styles as I am not ideologically against any of them, this ranking reflects my current confidence/ability to deliver a good decision in a particular style.
Background + General
Hey y'all. I'm Nate. I did LD all throughout high school in Texas and judged regularly until the pandemic, last tournament being TFA state 2020. I've been out of the meta a hot minute but I'm looking forward to getting back into it. Yes I want to be on the email chain, bonus points if you start the chain before the round to speed things up - my email is nathan.smith191710@gmail.com
- I'm fine with speed I'll give two verbal clears and then I'll stop flowing until you change.
- Tech over truth 99.99% of the time. (that .01 being clearly discriminatory/exclusionary arguments)
- People who's paradigms I generally agree with - Patrick Fox, Ethan Massa, Rob Glass, Richard Garner.
- Please be civil, why debate if it makes you miserable? If debate makes you miserable but you still want to do it, why take that out on someone else? You and your opponent are both humans and deserve as much kindness as can be mustered. Being competitive and being kind go hand in hand, productively debating good debaters make you better so why not want everyone to succeed ?
Arguments I will not vote for / will vote you down for
Doing any of these things will provoke a reaction from me that ranges not flowing it to immediately giving you an L-25 depending on the severity/intentionality of the offense.
- Arguments that are explicitly racist/sexist/transphobic/ablest/etc
- Arguments that claim nonhuman animals have no ethical value / claim the oppression and/or suffering of nonhuman animals is good in any way shape or form. Maybe this is a hot take but I've learned not to care, feel free to discuss this with me after the round.
- Making the argument that the death of your opponent would be good in any way, shape, or form. I do not care what K this may be tied to, if you do this you get an L 25.
- I refuse to vote on anything that happened before the 1AC or after the 2AR. The only exception to this is disclosure. This includes arguments that link to positions your opponent may have run in other rounds.
- I won't evaluate the debate after the 1AC.
Defaults
These can all be changed very easily in round but this is how I evaluate until told to do otherwise.
- Truth testing > Comparative worlds.
- C/I > reasonability.
- Epistemic Confidence > Epistemic modesty.
- DTA > DTD.
- Fairness > Education.
- Presumption and permissibility negate.
Disclosure
Disclosing is good and I'm sympathetic to it but have also voted against it. Here are 4 cases where you will not be able to get me to vote on disclosure: 1 - performances which disclose sensitive personal information 2 - novices 3 - People who are not aware of the wiki 4 - cases where the wiki has been down (in this case speech docs/disclosure should be done person to person until it can be disclosed). I am trusting you to not abuse these exceptions, don't make me sad.
I want screenshots of the violation in the speech doc. Don't make me handle your gross laptop to see them.
LARP: Cool.
I won't kick the CP for you. Please for the love of god weigh things for me. The spark DA may be the funniest thing I've ever heard, if you run it in front of me and execute it perfectly, expect good speaks
- 2 condo is maybe ok? 3+ is probably abusive.
- You don't get to kick planks of a condo CP.
Ks: This is my favorite genre of arguments
I am familiar with most critical theory (I ran/have read outside of debate a lot of Baudrillard, anthro/animality, and psychoanalysis) and I'm happy to answer questions about individual Ks before the round BUT you should start the round with the presumption that I have no clue who on hell is Baudrillard because it encourages you to give better explanations. You will not win your K if you don’t explain it. I only have jurisdiction to vote on what your articulation of the K is, not what I've read outside of the round. Aff, please impact turn anything that won’t be morally repugnant. The more specific the links are to the aff the happier I will be.
Words/Phrases that bad K debaters have convinced me are meaningless - Subjectivity, "power relations," ontology, "[X] bodies," co-option, neoliberalism, "rendered," pedagogy.
K affs: Very cool and nice.
I prefer these be interesting, unique, and have a clear topic link. You should be able to explain in round why not only the READING but also the DEBATING of the aff is a good idea. If you answer the question "what is the role of the negative" with "to lose" I will be immediately less convinced about the legitimacy of reading the aff in debate. I think there is some value in debate even if that value is to just have fun so I appreciate thoughtful and intelligent consideration about not just why your scholarship is good but why bringing into a discursive sphere like debate is uniquely good.
If you don't like these affs, read framework and engage with it. 5 frivolous shells will make me hate you.
Phil: Good and true
Phil debates are cool. I think contextualization of why I care about offense is equally important as the offense itself.
Here are some authors/Lit bases/arguments I feel comfortable evaluating.
- Kant
- Levinas
- Virtue Ethics
- Mackie/error theory/emotivism
- GCB
T/Theory
General - I'm a fan. I think It's ok to use theory as a strategic tool and I find claims that a certain shell is frivolous totally dependent on whether or not an abuse story is being won or not.
T Framewonk - I think Framework is a good model for debate. I think plans and stable offense are probably good for the event. While this does not mean I hack for framework (my voting record is about 50/50 on this issue) I am unconvinced by lazy arguments that presume I am naturally disposed against framework because of my love for the K. Anyone running a K aff has the burden to provide a justification for why the debating of the aff is good and what the role of the negative should be under their model of debate. K debaters and Framework debaters that have utilized that issue effectively for their side are often the ones that pick up my ballot.
Trix
I dig trix debate. There's a line to be drawn for sure but most of the time I think it’s ok. I think Skep is a fun argument and T/T vs comparative worlds is a fun debate when done well! Yes I vote on a prioris.
Speaks
Things that will make your speaks go up
- Kindness, respect, and general helpfulness
- Unique and well executed strategies

I primarily competed in Congress primarily but also did LD, DX, and IX.
Overall, I'm cool with just about anything. Do what YOU want, but do it well.
Congress Paradigms
Please engage in clash if you're past the 3rd speaker. i mostly give 4-6 rankings for speeches. i'll normally rank the PO 4-8 if they didn't mess up big time.
LD and PF
- don't be mean.
'Progressive' Argumentation. I am willing to evaluate essentially all arguments and am somewhat comfortable evaluating most args. I am most familiar with framework, meta-weighing, kritiks, plans, cps, disads, and (kinda) theory. trix are bad but I am able to evaluate those args If I must—run them at your own risk. Run what you want to run because that's what I did when I debated. I think that limiting different/"progressive" forms of argumentation in any debate space is bad.
Extensions. Extensions are really really important. I see too many talented teams lose because they don't extend or don't extend fully. All dropped responses are conceded—100%. Extend your link(s), warrant(s), and impact(s) if you want the argument(s) to be evaluated, especially if it's contested. If the argument is not correctly extended entirely through, then, it cannot be evaluated. With that in mind, please extend what you want to win on in every speech. My threshold for extensions on K, theory, etc. is higher than it is for substance, please explain every part of the arg in every speech so I can follow.
Weigh. You should weigh, it will likely help you win. Like most args, conceded weighing is true weighing. Use it to your advantage. If there are two arguments, then I will default to ANY weighing that is present. If there is no weighing, I will be forced to make the decision on my own.
Speed. Speed is fine as long as I can understand/follow, but keep in mind that I have never been the best at flowing. I am very comfortable letting you know if I can't keep up. I will say 'clear' three times before I dock your speaks if you don't slow down.
Team cases are the worst, I prob won't be very happy to hear and judge a case that I have heard before and will likely give lower speaks. Team cases ruin the integrity of debate and make me sad :( -- The purpose of debate isn't to win, it is to develop yourself and your cognitive reasoning. Case writing and research is essential to that.
Read me. If I look confused I'm doing that on purpose; it's because I'm confused. If I am nodding, it means I agree with you. I tend to be pretty expressive and I will when I am judging too.
Warrant your arguments and use your time wisely and I'll give you high speaks. Every argument is ok, but I won't be super happy if I judge a novice round and they read shoe theory.
I have been judging LD and PF debate off and on for roughly five years now and have a lot of experience with different styles of debate. In LD I am fine with most non-spreading (because I don’t want to read, not any inherent issue with spreading) levels of speed and can handle technical and progressive arguments so long as the speaker makes sure to clearly state how they expect their argument to be used in my decision making. The essential factor to remember is that LD is not a game where you just try to score points, but a game where you try to set up the rules so that your arguments count more than your opponent's. I believe LD is a fundamentally an abstract moral debate, not an empirical one and I will heavily prefer cases that rely on solid philosophical framework over cases that rely on dubious empirical claims. The skill we ought to be testing are analytical, not evidential. I do believe spoken rhetoric ought to be a component of LD's metagame, although I acknowledge it rarely is in the current moment where competitors prefer a format more similar to an essay contest. I will strongly prefer concise, straight-forward rhetoric over purple prose or intentional mystification.
IM PRETTY SURE I WROTE THESE PARADIGMS MANY YEARS APART AND DONT WANT TO EDIT THEM AGAIN (CHANCE - Jan 2023). TLDR: LD IS A MORAL DEBATE AND IM NOT GONNA READ YOUR CASE IF YOU TALK TOO FAST fr fr.

█▄▀ ██▄ █▄█ █▀█ ░█░ ██▄
My main votes in LD are relevancy and framework achievement. I believe LD is fundamentally a dialectical competition focused on moral philosophy and political theory, not an empirical slugfest. I want to reward research into philosophy, not weakly sourced current events minutiae. I find technocratic and policy speculation far less persuasive than well thought out theories of moral reasoning and/or political philosophy. I expect debaters to explain their arguments in a comprehensive way that either clashes with their opponent or reinterprets the subject of debate in a creative and compelling manner. I won't ever flow pedantic critiques standing in for substantive engagement with the core internal logic of your opponent's case. Creative cases are always a plus and I find judging the same tired, canned cases incredibly boring, not to mention it reflects poorly on the quality of the debater and their team when they haven’t even take the time to workshop their own arguments. Finally, you have to be having fun. If you want to do something really out there go for it!
I prefer PF rounds that are as clear as possible and competitors should show some attention to rhetoric and good faith debate as is expected of public forum. I also prefer you have fun in PF.
I am a parent judge from Westwood High School. I used to be a litigator. Here is what I would be comfortably focused on:
1. Be organized with your key points, clear and crisp, from the very beginning;
2. Be respectful to your opponents, and challenge each other To The Point;
3. Prioritize your arguments and evidence;
4. Persuade me with your prioritization.
Medium speed is good for me.
