Dear Coaches and Students,
Ashland High School cordially invites you to participate in the 4th Annual Grizzly Invitational on January 27th and 28th at Ashland High School.
The Grizzly Invitational will feature both junior varsity and varsity divisions in debate and individual events. Junior varsity will be open to first and second year competitors and designed for students who are still learning that activity, while varsity is open to anyone. Each division of debate will be guaranteed a minimum of five debate rounds, with additional elimination rounds for teams that perform exceptionally well.Individual events will be run in the style of State with two judges as possible and semifinals for any event with over 16 entries. All elimination rounds will have three judge panels. Events with at least 8 entries will have a final round.
Individual events will be run in the style of State with two judges as possible and semifinals for any event with over 16 entries. All elimination rounds will have three judge panels. Events with at least 8 entries will have a final round.
We are excited to feature Big Questions debate, a newly promoted NSDA event that asks competitors to analyze complex worldview topics. The Big Questions topic for this year is "Resolved: Science leaves no room for free will." Big Questions debate will be held during all individual event patters, meaning students are unable to enter in any IEs if they are entered in Big Questions. Competitors can, however, enter in both Big Questions debate and one of the other debate forms offered. We will follow all NSDA rules for Big Questions.
Students that will not compete in Big Questions debate are able to enter two IEs per pattern. Patterning will be as follows:
Pattern A - (historically popular events, most likely to have a semi-finals)
Original Oratory
Humorous Interpretation
Prose
Poetry
Impromptu
Radio Commentary
Libell (FREE)
Pattern B -
Dramatic Interpretation
Dual Interpretation
Extemporaneous
Program Oral Interp
Expository
After Dinner Speaking
We will offer a semifinal round for individual events with more than 16 competitors (four total rounds are possible for students in those events who earn a place in finals). Extemp prep will take place 30 minutes into all pattern A. Based on prior entries, we do not expect extemp to require a semifinal round, but the schedule will be adjusted as needed.
We will follow all OHSSL guidelines unless otherwise noted.
Additionally, Ashland High School has partnered with Point of Information to offer a parli-only tournament to run side by side with the Grizzly Invitational on January 28th and 29th.
