Tournament Invite

Dear Speech & Debate Community,

Crater Speech & Debate is eager to host the Rogue Valley Invitational to kick off the season once again. The tournament will be held at Crater High School on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The tournament will feature all OSAA events except for Cross Ex/ Policy Debate and Congress, and will be following all OSAA rules and using OSAA ballots. We also have a few fun events that are somewhat unique to this tournament to hopefully allow students to be creative and to have a more welcoming entry point to competition! The rules for these events are linked below.

Topics:

Lincoln-Douglas – September/ October 2026 topic – “Resolved: Outer space colonization is a moral imperative.”

Novice Lincoln-Douglas – Novice topic – “Resolved: In the United States, national service ought to be mandatory.”

Parliamentary – Topics written by tournament staff

Big Questions – 2026-27 topic – “Resolved: Technological progress has surpassed humanity’s ability to use it ethically.”

Public Forum – September/ October 2026 topic – “Resolved: The United States federal government should enact a moratorium on hyperscale data center construction.”

Students can use internet for debate and extemp. In parliamentary debate, internet is allowed during prep but not in the round.

Rules:

Double-Entry Rules – Students can double-enter in all speech events except for Extemp. SpAr can also be paired with a speech event double-entry. Students CANNOT double-enter in any round in which they are entered in debate (except for SpAr debate).

“Novice” refers to any student in their first year of Speech & Debate competition. If a student has competed in a tournament prior to the 2026-27 school year, they should be entered in the open division. If there are questions or concerns about a specific student or situation, please feel free to reach out!

Internet – Usage follows all OSAA rules respective to the event the student is participating in.

Speaker Points – The range for speaker points for all debate events is 25-30, with 25 being the lowest with improvement needed in all areas, and 30 being a speech in which no improvement is needed.

Fees:

$10 each entry for both IE and debate, with a $20 one-time school fee.

Food for judges/coaches: We will have breakfast items, lunch, dinner, and snacks for all judges and coaches.

Food for students: We will NOT offer concessions for students. Students can bring snacks, order food, or walk to nearby options.

Judge Obligation – Teams are expected to provide one speech judge for every 6 IE entries and one debate judge for every 2 debate entries in the tournament. If you are a new program or are traveling from out of town and meeting judging obligations is a barrier, please contact the tournament director for more information.

Arrival – Judges are expected to check in by 8:15 AM unless otherwise noted in the availability note on Tabroom.

Training – If you are new to judging or would like a refresher, training will be provided at 8:15 AM in the judge lounge, room 108.

Topics – If you are judging extemp, impromptu, impromptu duo, or parliamentary, please pick up the topics from the judge lounge before heading to your round. If you are judging impromptu inform, make sure to collect boards before heading to your round.

Parking: Please enter the building on the 3rd Street side— the back side of the building facing highway 99 will be locked. Buses can park in the student lot— after dropping off at the 3rd Street lot, buses can exit the lot, take a left, pass the Performing Arts Center on the left, and then turn left down Stadium Way to park in our student lot.

Payment: Please either bring a check or have one sent to Crater. Checks should be made to Crater High School with Speech & Debate in the memo. Our address is 655 N 3rd St., Central Point, OR 97502.
