You are cordially invited to the first ever Spooktacular Speech Starter at Highland High School on November 1st, 2025.

This is a speech only, one day tournament, with a couple different rules and procedures than your typical tournament.

First, the tournament has novice and open divisions of all 13 speech events. If there are any events with less than 5 competitors they will be combined with their varsity/novice division counterpart, OR the event it is most similar to (IE SAL with ADS, CA with INFO, DI with POI, etc.).

Second, participants at the tournament will be both competitors AND judges--novice will judge varsity rounds, and varsity will judge novice rounds. This will allow novices to be exposed to a multitude of speech events that they have never seen before, varsity will get to interact with lots of different novices and serve as a great example.

Third, this is a low pressure to be perfect, high pressure to do your best tournament. No memorization is allowed in any prepared events. No visual aids are allowed in the events that usually allow them. Draw Events (Retold, Extemp, and Impromptu) will allow the use of a notecard.

Fourth, double entry is allowed, and if space and judging allows, triple entry will be allowed for varsity. The only exception is you can't double enter in two different draw events: extemporaneous speaking, retold story, and radio broadcast journalism.

The schedule is as follows:

9:15am-10:35am Round 1: Novice Compete, Varsity Judge (Draw for Round 1N: 9:00am)

10:35am-11:55am Round 1: Varsity Compete, Novice Judge (Draw for Round 1V: 10:20am)

11:55am-1:15pm Round 2: Novice Compete, Varsity Judge (Draw for Round 2N: 11:40am)

1:15pm-1:30pm Lunch

1:30pm-2:50pm Round 2: Varsity Compete, Novice Judge (Draw for Round 2V: 1:15pm, eat lunch in draw)

2:50pm-4:10pm Round 3: Novice Compete, Varsity Judge (Draw for Round 3N: 2:35pm)

4:10pm-5:30pm Round 3: Varsity Compete, Novice Judge (Draw for Round 3V: 3:55pm)

5:45pm Awards Ceremony

The top 6 in each event will be recognized, with the top 3 entries in each event recieving a medal.
