Nano Nagle Tournament
2024 — San Jose, CA/US
The Nano Nagle Tournament
Tournament on October 12-14 2024 atPresentation High School in San Jose, CA
**Quarters TOC bids in LD + PF
We invite you to the Nano Nagle Tournament. We provide competition in Varsity Lincoln Douglas debate and Varsity Public Forum debate. The tournament will use the NSDA September/October topic for all divisions. In the spirit of Nano Nagle, her charism and our longstanding tradition of PHS Speech & debate of support speech and debate in our community and beyond we will be making a donation from proceeds. We are proud over the last decade to have donated more than $115,000 from the Voices Invitational/renamed Nano Nagle and look forward to doing that this year.
THE TOURNAMENT
The tournament will be able to accommodate approximately 65 VLD and 60 VPF entries. Once we reach the cap in an event we will start on the waitlist. I will try to prioritize new school admission, smaller schools and then independent entries. All admissions are subject to the tournament director/program director discretion. There will be an initial cap of 8 entries in LD and 8 in PF.
Both divisions will feature six preliminary rounds of debate and will clear all winning records to the elimination rounds up to a full double-octafinal.
In VLD mutual preference judging will be available to all schools whose judges have entered their paradigms onTabroom. We will be policing this with increased vigor this year - and it's now fairly easy to turn off a given school's ability to pref, so please don't sleep on this rule. ALL of your judges must have a paradigm on Tabroom in order for you to receive prefs.
LOCATION
Presentation High School is located in south San Jose near the Willow Glen neighborhood. We ask that you park on campus at all times. We also ask that students and guests enter the building from the front entrance (off Plummer) when arriving to campus to ensure/comply with our security protocols.
We appreciate the eagerness to get to campus and check in etc. On Saturday, Sunday, Monday campus will be open at 8am and we look forward to welcoming you then :)
REGISTER
We have moved around some spaces and are excited to share the speech & debate office new location. Room 302 on the side of the Center facing the pool is where you will come to pay fees, pick up meal tickets & or express tab concerns. Please check out our updated campus map and or ask one of the Pres girls if you need help finding anything!
ENTRY FEES, PAYMENT
Please see Fees Tab
MEALS & CONCESSIONS
All competitors should be prepared to cover the cost of their meals. We recognize food insecurity issues are often at play in our community. Please email Jyleesa Hampton at jhampton@presentationhs.org if you have a student for whom this is an issue. We do not want cost of any sort to hinder a student's ability to compete at her highest level at our tournament so if there's a need, we want to know.
Judges and coaches will still receive free meals throughout the tournament. All meals are available for purchase for all competitors. Vegetarian options will always be available for all meals.
In addition to concessions of snacks, drinks and small items, the current meal options are as follows:
Saturday Lunch - Full Taco bar, sides, drinks
Saturday Dinner - Ikes sandwiches, chips, drinks
Sunday Lunch - Pizza, chips, drinks
We will again hand out tickets with your registration for meal purchases for competitors. Saturday lunch is the only time judges or coaches need a ticket which can be retrieved from either the library or speech & debate office (room 302).
JUDGING
Judging requirement is 2 Rounds per entry in LD or PF. All schools are required to bring qualified, competent judges. All judges are required to have a paradigm on tabroom.com.If you enter judges without a paradigm you are at risk of having your prefs turned off. All judges must be familiar with using Tabroom.com for ballots and are required to do so. We will charge a $50 Administration Fee for each judge that needs to be trained or have their tabroom account fixed. In the past, this has caused significant delay to the tournament.
ALL JUDGES ARE STILL OBLIGATED THROUGH THE OCTOFINALS. Judges are then obligated for one round past the exit of their final entry.
HIRED JUDGES: We will have a limited pool of hired judges and will prioritize requests for schools. Please see the Fees page for more information on per round cost etc.
INDEPENDENT ENTRY POLICY
There are no exceptions to these rules. Please do not ask, it will be a futile effort. We cannot, for liability reasons, accept independent entries who do not achieve the following criteria:
1. You must have an adult, school-approved chaperone on campus at all times during the tournament and they must be present at check in/upon call from Tab. This chaperone is not allowed to leave campus and must be present if you compete in elimination rounds. Failure to do so will result in immediate disqualification--even if it's during the bid round.
2. You must possess approval, in the form of a signed official letter, to compete by your school's administration and acknowledging the name of your chaperone as a school-approve chaperone.
You can place the independent signed letter here. Please title document with Entry School/Name + event for easy processing.
To be clear the letter should: be addressed to me Speech and Debate Director (Presentation HS), include the school approved chaperone and have the principal or head of school signature. Letters must be received by jhampton@presentationhs.org by 10/4 or entries may be dropped and/or subject to fee.
We do not accept entries under the names of for-profit private organizations and those students must compete under the name of their actual school. Students who participate in these groups are free to continue to do so, but they will have to obtain approval in the same way that any other independent entry would. We do not offer "school protection" for these students to not have to debate each other. We do not provide school protection between a high school and their affiliated middle school.
