TOPICS
Speech - In Extemporaneous, students can pick from either the US or International areas. In Panel Discussion we will post the topics for discussion at least 3 weeks in advance of the tournament. In Impromptu, we will have one round with abstract words, one round with current events, and one round with fortune cookies (in place of quotations).
Panel Topics - the 3 Panel Topics are posted under the event description.
Debate - In Lincoln Douglas Debate and Public Forum Debate, we will use the November/December NFHS topics. For Worlds School Debate, we will publish the prepared topics at least 3 weeks in advance of the tournament. In Congressional Debate, we will utilize the District 3 Fall Legislation Packet. Those schools outside of District 3 may submit up to two pieces of legislation for the packet and those are due to Jeffrey Stoppenhagen at jeffrey.stoppenhagen@vallivue.org by end of day on Friday, October 25th. For the finals, we will use the October 2024 NSDA packet that will be posted here after October 1.
SCHEDULE
Speech - All rounds in speech will be held on Saturday to allow speech only schools to attend one day. There are no final rounds.
Debate - The first 2 rounds in LD, PF, and WSD will be held on Friday as well as the first 2 sessions of Congressional Debate (two-day event). There is a Friday only Congressional Debate as well. The remaining prelim rounds in LD, PF, and the two-day Congressional Debate will be held Saturday as well as the elimination rounds.
AWARDS
Speech - We will award the top six (6) in each event, regardless of the number of entries, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd as well as three finalists. There will be a Top Novice medal awarded in each speech event as well.
Debate - In debate, six (6) entries will advance to the elimination rounds in LD and PF, in each division. In the elimination round, those winning will receive a Gold award and the other a silver. The next 6 placements will receive a bronze award, but not debate. In Congressional Debate, 12 students will advance to the final session in each division where half will earn a Bronze award in the final session and the other half will be awarded a Gold or Silver based on their finish in the final session. In addition, we will award the Top Presiding Officers in the prelims as well as the Top Presiding Officers in the final session and will award the Top 3 Speakers in each debate format.
Sweepstakes - We will award the Top Three schools with creative Sweepstakes Awards in speech, the Top 3 in debate, and the Top 3 Overall. We will also award the top school in squad efficiency (total points divided by total entries, including drops).
JUDGE REQUIREMENTS
Speech - one judge will cover 5 speech entries on Saturday.
Debate - one judge will cover 4 debate entries LD and PF, and 6 Congressional Debate entries.
If judges do not show, the school will be fined or forced to drop entries to get to a covered status. The drop judge option will be $100 per missing judge.
ENTRY FEES
Speech - Entry fees are $8 per slot, except Duo Interpretation which will be $12 per slot.
Debate - Entry fees are $8 per slot for the individual events (Congressional Debate and Lincoln Douglas Debate) and $12 per slot for the team events (Public Forum and Worlds School Debate).
NO SHOW OR LATE ENTRY FEES! If you have students that drop after the deadline or are added after the deadline, there is a $25 per entry nuisance fee that will be charged.
PARKING
Friday and Saturday - We dismiss school at 3:35 pm so it will be a little busy in the NORTH parking lot, off of Linden, for the first 15 minutes after school lets out. We suggest you be at the school no later than 3:20 pm so you can find parking and enter the building on the NORTH side (Auditorium) before the final bell. This is for JUDGES and COMPETITORS. Please DO NOT try and enter the school from the west side (front parking on Madison Rd) as this is the office and you will be turned away to enter form the North side. Saturday parking will be less stressful but ALL will still need to enter on the North side of the school, both judges and competitors.
CONCESSIONS/FOOD
There are NO food options near our school so we suggest you make the necessary arrangements to bring your own snacks and beverages as well as food, or take advantage of our concessions. We will feed judges dinner on Friday, a light breakfast as well as lunch and dinner on Saturday. There will a Judges Lounge with snacks and beverages throughout both days for our judges!
We hope you will join us for two days of competition and camaraderie!
