District 1 Speech

2023 — Rathdrum, ID/US

Thank you for registering for the 2023 District 1 Speech tournament! We are grateful to be hosted by Colleen Hall at Lakeland High School! We hope that you and your students are excited for the chance to share their skills and hard work as we qualify for the State tournament at Lake City High School on April 14-15.

Registration: Opens February 14th, 2023. CLOSES February 24th, 2023 by 3 pm. Drops after that time will not be refunded. Please contact the tournament if you want to request adding an entry.

Fees: Please bring a purchase order or Check to the tournament. Fees include a one-time $30 school fee and $8 per entry (Duo counts as one entry). Make checks and purchase orders out to:

Timberlake High School
Attention: Chris Jarstad
5303 ID-54
Spirit Lake, ID 83869

Judges: Judges do not have to be certified, but they can get certified for free. Please enter your judges into Tabroom as well. Please meet with your judges before they come to the tournament to prepare them and answer their questions; this tournament is not the time to “train” new judges. For every 6 students entered in each pattern, you must provide one judge.

Scripts: Due by March 3rd, 2023, by 3 pm. Please fill out this form to upload and submit all scripts for your entries. You may need to fill out the form multiple times if you need to upload more than 10 scripts.

According to IHSAA General Speech Rules: "A prepared text (not an outline) for Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, After Dinner, Sales Speaking, Communication Analysis, and photocopies of Interp. [HI, DI, DUO, POI] event materials must be on file with district and state managers. Failure to provide required materials will result in disqualification. District managers are required to collect all scripts and take them to state speech."

Some reminders as we get ready for this tournament:

Don't forget your Principal Approval forms! You can scan and upload them to the Script Submissions form OR bring them to the tournament (Caleb will call you "old" - the ageist). Please label your form: SCHOOL_PAF (Ex. LCHS PAF).

Please review IHSAA and ISATA rule changes with your students. It is our responsibility as coaches to ensure that our entries and competitors meet the requirements and follow the rules for each event (some have changed!).

This tournament is all online! Competitors and judges will need Tabroom accounts created and linked to their entries to receive notifications for rounds and read feedback/see results. There are helpful videos in the "Tabroom Help" page, or reach out to Caleb Drechsel (cdrechsel@cdadschools.org) for help. Going online helps us run an efficient tournament, ensure feedback gets to students, and solve problems before they occur!

Entries will be ranked through the total entries in each section. That is, if there are seven entries in a section panel, entries will be ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th. The original rule was that the rank of 4th would be repeated for all entries not ranked 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

We are excited to see you!
