Extemporaneous Speaking (EX)
Extemporaneous Speaking, typically called "extemp," is a speech on current events with limited preparation time. Students are presented with a choice of three questions related to national and international current events. The student has 20 minutes to prepare a 4-minute speech answering the selected question. Please allow for a 30-second grace period on either side of the time limit before assessing a penalty. Students may consult articles and evidence they gather prior to the contest, students MAY use the Internet during preparation. Students should deliver this speech WITHOUT notes. If they use notes, please score them, but they should not place first in the round (unless everyone in the round uses notes).
