Extemporaneous Speaking

Event Description:

The tournament will feature competition in three events in one pattern: Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, and Original Oratory. National Speech & Debate Association rules will govern all competitions. There will not be separate divisions for Varsity/Novice, however middle school students are permitted to use the abbreviated time format appropriate to their age group. Judges will be instructed not to consider the difference in time as a factor in adjudication. Judges will be encouraged to submit ranks and ballots electronically however paper ballots will be made available if necessary. Elimination rounds will be sectioned by preliminary round seeds to balance out the competition.

2 Preliminary Rounds, clear to Semifinals (based on entry size, 3 Prelims to Finals)

Original Oratory

Varsity – 10:00 with 30 seconds of grace

Novice – 5:00 with 30 seconds of grace

Extemporaneous Speaking
Varsity – 7:00 with 30 seconds of grace
Novice – 5:00 with 30 seconds of grace
*Both divisions will be given 30 minutes of preparation time
*Internet is provided and allowed during prep
Impromptu Speaking
Varsity – 7:00 with 30 seconds of grace (2:00 maximum prep)
Novice – 7:00 with 30 seconds of grace (3:00 maximum prep)
