Extemporaneous Debate
Event Description:
Extemporaneous Debate is a combination of Lincoln-Douglas style rounds and decorum with Public Forum style cases, all rolled together with Extemp Speaking style limited prep time. That's right, you typically only have 30 minutes to write your entire case. Two competitors are given a resolution drawn from current political, economic, or social affairs, allowed a briefprep period, and then alternate constructive speeches,cross-examination, and rebuttals. Topics rotate frequently and are usually phrased as questions of policy or value (for example, whether a particular sanctions regime is justified).
Extemp Debate is fairly simple and only 15-20 minutes with a short construction, cross-examination, and two rebuttal periods. For some reason, NSDA claims that Extemp Debate uses 'Proposition' and 'Opposition', but we will be using 'Affirmative' and 'Negative' with PF and LD-style resolutions generated by tournament administrators.
