Event Description:

Persuasive Speaking is a 7-13 minute oration written and performed by the student. Persuasive Speaking requires students to balance that content with delivery and style. Speakers must be articulate, engaging, and smooth with their delivery at both a vocal and physical level. The purpose of the event is to inform and persuade the audience on a serious problem that actually exists. Persuasive Speaking is NOT solely an English-speaking competition, but a competition that judges both speechwriting and performance.

Persuasive speeches use some version of a Problem-Solution structure to highlight a problem, why it matters, and what can be done to resolve the problem. Speeches must be written by the contestant and the quoted/referenced content should not exceed 150 words. All quoted parts need to be specially noted (indicating the source or origin of the quotation) to avoid the suspicion of plagiarism. Persuasive speeches should be the original work of the contestant, not coaches, friends, parents, AI, or anyone else.
