Event Description:

TOC ASIA Speech & Debate Impromptu Speaking

Time limit: 7min with a 30s "grace period"

  1. Round Procedure & Rules:
    “Welcome, speakers. I will explain how this round will proceed and remind you of the key rules:
    • Each speaker will receive a prompt and will have 7 minutes in total to both prepare and deliver your speech. There is a 30-second grace period after 7 minutes. If you go beyond 7 minutes and 30 seconds, you are not eligible for first place in this room of speakers.
    • You may not use any electronic devices or notes during your preparation or speech.
    • When your speech is finished, you are expected to sit down and listen to the other speakers, unless you are double-entered and must go to another event.
    • Unless you ask me to do otherwise, I will give time signals as per the instructions. If you want different time signals, please let me know before you draw your prompts.
    • The order of speakers is as follows: (Read the speaking order.)”

Conducting the Round:

  1. Delivering Prompts and Preparation Time:
    “We will begin with (first speaker’s name).
  2. (Offline) “Please come forward and draw your prompts. You may select three topics from the envelope, choose one of the three, and put the other two back. You have approximately 15 seconds to look at and select a topic.”

5. (Once they select a topic) “Please take a seat at the preparation table. When you have completed preparation and wish to begin speaking, you may simply stand up and begin speaking. Your 7 minutes begins now.”

6. Start your timer, using a count-up (stopwatch) timer. Provide time signals as per the guide below or as the student has requested.

Judging Impromptu Speaking

The Impromptu speech should be regarded as an original interpretation by the speakerof the designated prompt as supported by varied materials and gives a contestant opportunity to be creative and imaginative. An impromptu speech should reveal the student’sability to organize his thoughts in a logical manner.
