2023 Panel Topics

  1. How should the U.S. criminal justice system reduce recidivism rates?
  2. What is the best way for states and school districts to remediate learning loss for K-12 students caused by pandemic lockdowns and school closures?
  3. How should communities/districts/states make schools safer without physical hardening (such as metal detectors, armed guards, access control)?
  4. How can students help protect academic freedom in their schools?
  5. Has the "Body Positivity" movement contributed to the obesity epidemic?

40-minute round with no time penalties

  1. Event Procedure: Panel members do not make formal speeches but remain seated and discuss the topic informally. Notes may be taken during the discussion. Emphasis is on problem solving through working towards group consensus. Panelists should be familiar with the topic and be prepared to discuss facts and opinions. Contestants may bring a pen or pencil and research limited to one page, one sided (8.5 x 11) to the round.
  2. Time: This event has a 40-minute maximum. Time signals are provided. Students may time themselves for reference, but the judge is the official timekeeper of the round.
