Duo Interpretation

Event Description:

DUO INTERPRETATION

1. Duo Interpretation is a two-person category in which the selection may be either humorous or dramatic in nature. Selections must be cuttings from a single work of literature (one short story, play, screenplays, or novel), unless poetry is used, in which case cuttings may come from one or more poems from a single source.

2. The time limit is a minimum of five minutes and a maximum of ten minutes with a thirty second grace. An introduction is included in that time limit and should include the title and playwright. Duo contestants who does not fall within the time limit cannot be ranked first in the round.

3. Each of the two performers may play one or more characters, so long as performance responsibility in the cutting remains as balanced as possible. [If the selection is prose or poetry and contains narration, either or both of the performers may present the narration.]

4. Scenes are to be memorized.

5. Movement, blocking, gestures, and pantomime are allowed.

6. Performers cannot establish eye contact with each other.

7. Performers cannot touch each other.

8. No props, costumes, lighting, etc. may be used.

9. This is a contest in interpretation. The contestants should be evaluated on poise, quality and use of voice, inflections, emphasis, pronunciation, enunciation, physical expression, and especially the ability to interpret characters correctly and consistently.

10. A student may not use the same cutting from a play, screenplay, novel, short story or poem for Duo, Dramatic or Humorous Interpretation, Prose or Poetry at the same tournament.

11. Students may not use a cutting from the same play, screenplay, novel, short story, or poem or the same cutting that they have used in previous years.

12. Sources of material must be made available to the tournament director upon request. If the requested material cannot be provided, or if the source is questionable or not credible, the student cannot advance at the tournament or receive an award.

13. Scripts may not be altered to change gender or give one character’s lines to another character without the permission of the author of the material used.
