Hello, my good name is Ishan Abu. I am from a distant land and am on a H1B1 visa. I came to this land to manifest my destiny. English is my 9th language ;-; I have been studying the art of public forum debate for eons; however, I am very old as I am a senior (citizen) in hs so i forgot everything :(This is my third time judging.
So to begin:
DISCLAIMER: this may or may not be all satire
---------
Speaks go up up uppity if including but not limited to:
- I will boost speaks if cross is extremely heated.
- Tell me where you are in the flow throughout your speech, i.e. signpost. (I don't know what a flow is).
- Beat me in an arm wrestle (b4 or after round)
- Utilize rhetorical and literary devices and the scientific method.
- Flip the table/chair to add pathos
- Swear to emphasize dire matters (anything)
- Using the word "bigly"
- Pre-round and/or post-round (please post-round if you can tell the debate was messy)
- Not speaking at the speed of sound
- Speaking at the speed of light (if comprehensible)
- Show a funny tiktok
- State that your opponents are yapping and/or are d1 yappers
- If you drop case and just try to win with turns
- Give offtime roadmaps <3
- Impact out to nuke war
- formal clothing theory lol
- etc.
----------
As I can barely understand English due to a lack of braincells and mental capacity, email cases/speech docs before round starts as well as any cards that are used (if the cards are asked for). ADD me on the email chain!!! I can type generally faster than most but still do it regardless. If you do indeed want to speak at the speed of light make sure to especially do this. Feel free to speak however you'd like i.e. persuasively, robotic, loud, quiet, etc. as well as through any means i.e. rap, poetry, etc. There is indeed a very expansive difference between being toxic and being debaters, but as to my knowledge... there is none :O (which I don't mind). Keep track of your prep time even though time is just a social construct. During the round if it is apparent that you are indeed getting absolutely destroyed, most likely it will be apparent on my face. In general though don't think soley because of facial expressions that you are at all going to win or lose especially if you don't adhere to the poem below.
----------
Furthermore, if you'd like to bring any progressive debate thingies up i.e. theory, k's, plans/cps, fw, tricks, etc. feel free to. In relation to FW, if you run it, make sure most of your points actually relate and/or revolve around the FW. If you don't respond to a FW that is put on you, that's very tickling, and will make it so my view on the round is based off of said FW. In relation to theory, I'm pretty variable on how I evaluate it depending on the extent of what the interp, violation, standards, etc. are. If I hear some type of theory and deem it valid I'll let you know, same with if I don't so that you don't waste time on it. I js realized I am most likely judging novies and chances are none of this is going to be a reality so mb if you js wasted time reading all that... but I mean better safe than sorry. Furthermore, truth over truth... there is no tech unless there's tech. In fact, feel free not to debate with technology and speaks will also go up up uppity. I am very much tech over tech as well as truth over truth but sometimes truth over tech while being tech over truth. Tell me what you want in round, if both sides agree, that's what I'll do. If you don't then I'll default to how I usually judge, which is
----------
You can bring up very random arguments as long as they have some type of warrant. It can be so quirky and wild that even I might not believe it. Unlike some judges, I will make sure not to intervene AT ALL, meaning as long as you extend said arguments with actual reasoning or wtv throughout the round, I will vote on it without any bias (and ofc if you're winning it lol). On evidence, if they are conflicting, convince me as to why yours is better than theirs. And if the evidence is complete gas and wrecks their entire case, capitalize on it and tell me why it's so blasphemous-ly amazing. Ask for cards if you think what your opponent is saying is very... suspect. Do not ask for cards on simple analytics unless they sound far fetched like this: 2+2=4 (it equals 5.) On analytics or even case, if the linkage between your thoughts are sneaky and epitomizing a clear and excellent display of topic knowledge you get 30 speaks. Oh also please extend case thingies throughout the flow if you want them to make it to final focus (turns, links, etc.) . If you bring up something out of no where when it wasn't extended throughout speeches, I'm gonna assume that you want to lose. Same with dropping args without putting defense on it. Also don't waste a set amount of time for a case extension on any speech, at most all I need are narratives (a lil storytime) that tells me where to vote and why. I will disclose if yall want me to... but... on everything... if yall have the most jaw dropping, convulsing, mentally tickling, and all in all appalling round ever and I genuinely can't decide, you're gonna have to rock paper scissors it out (2 outta 3) for who ever gets the dub as judge intervention bad! (if you wanna post round here feel free to do so).
----------
Most importantly, weigh your impacts. Do this comparatively if possible. Make sure they are very obese. It will make it very hard for your opponents to eat up, which will leave you with the W.
IN OTHER WORDS ->
weigh
i begged you
but
you didn’t
and you
lost
- Elmo prolly
(On a fact that is most extra califragilisticexpialidocious-ly real... any type of hate speech will get you dropped.)
She/Her pronouns
I am currently a varsity PF debater on the Eagan Debate team and this is my 4th year debating. I am a tech/ flow judge.
Flowing
I consider myself a flow judge, and I will only flow the argument you extend. My ballot will be based of the flow. which means it very important to have good, clean warrants and impact extensions. But I also value the concept of building a narrative, I think it very useful for public speaking in general.
Speaking
- Since I am debater I can understand fast speaking, but I don't want debaters spreading any of their speeches.
- I expect debater to speak and behave politely, kindly and civil. Don't be rude or interrupt people while they are speaking.
- Theory is not my jam, I don't like, but I will hear what you have to say.
Speaker Point Breakdown
30: Excellent job, you demonstrate stand-out organizational skills and speaking abilities. Ability to use creative analytical skills and humor to simplify and clarify the round.
29: Very strong ability. Good eloquence, analysis, and organization. A couple minor stumbles or drops.
28: Above average. Good speaking ability. May have made a larger drop or flaw in argumentation but speaking skills compensate. Or, very strong analysis but weaker speaking skills.
27: About average. Ability to function well in the round, however analysis may be lacking. Some errors made.
26: Is struggling to function efficiently within the round. Either lacking speaking skills or analytical skills. May have made a more important error.
25: Having difficulties following the round. May have a hard time filling the time for speeches. Large error.
Below: Extreme difficulty functioning. Very large difficulty filling time or offensive or rude behavior.
Speed: If I say "clear" that means I want you to slow down.
To win my ballot you must:
- Extend in Summary and Final Focus
- Signpost
- Weigh
- Metaweigh
- Implicate
- Warrant
- Engage with warrants (Warrant debate is real debate)
- As intuitive as it sounds, you need defense and offense but as a judge I vote only on offense.
Other things:
- Defense is not sticky.
- I listen to crossfire but I don't flow or vote off of it. If something big happens in crossfire, say it in a speech.
- No new evidence after 1st summary.
- I don't mind if you go a few seconds over time, just wrap up and don't add anything new. Don't abuse this and I can stop paying attention whenever I want.
I am a former varsity PF debater for Eastview High School. While I like to take an analytical approach to judging debate, I can follow technical debate and will enjoy it if it's argued well. With that being said, while perfect technical skill can give you a large advantage in my round, perfect warranting wins it.
I generally dislike K cases, but if you warrant and argue it better than your opponents can refute it, I will flow it through in the round.
I don’t accept any theory at all. Any clear attempt at theory will be instantly struck off my flow. I will only judge points that relate to the debate at hand. If you have a serious concern with the actions or words of another debater, please approach me about it privately either after a speech has ended, or after the round.
Speed:
As a judge, if you spread (read super fast), I will be way less likely to understand all the points you are trying to tell me. I can understand if you have a naturally faster speaking speed, but abusing your speaking speed in order to put more evidence onto your flow will not win you the round in my eyes.
Evidence:
Warranting is very important in debate, and will contribute more to my flow. If you can not explain to me WHY your argument is true, I will have no reason to agree with your points. When you extend evidence cards (please do this), explain to me what your evidence says about your argument besides just citing the author.
As well as this, you should be weighing your arguments and impacts throughout the round. Examine the real meaning behind your case. Help me to understand why your arguments and impacts matter more than what your opponents have to offer.
Speaker points:
I will assign speaker points based solely on how you perform in the debate. However, I will not hesitate to subtract points for any form of rude behavior. I understand debates can be intense at times, but please be respectful to your opponents. Good performance in speeches, quality questions, respectful behavior, etc. will increase your point totals in increments.
Misc.
- If you need help with anything during the round, please don’t be afraid to ask, just not during a speech.
- I will keep track of prep time, but I also ask that you keep track of it and correct me if needed.
- If you want me to give you some advice in person after the round, I am perfectly fine with giving you tips. With that being said, I will not give an oral RFD under any circumstances.
And most importantly, have fun!
Hey everyone, my name is Alex (He/Him).
Yes, I want to be on the email chain, alexanderb1029@gmail.com
I'll vote on anything as long as it is extended across the flow. That said, anything bigoted or harmful said in round will get you a loss and tanked speaks.
Please keep time well, it's fine if you're finishing a sentence or something quick after time ends but if you bring up anything that is separate on the flow after time, I won't write it down.
Please extend tag lines for cards, I also follow the flow pretty closely for my RFDs. Voters in your last speech will have an impact. Remember your speeches are your opportunity to write my flow, tell me what I should be focusing on.
I think it's important, however, I don't flow CX/CF, so if you make a point during it please extend it.
For everyone's sake please signpost, if you jump around in your rebuttal I'll do my best to flow it, but it's your job to make sure it's clearly articulated.
Evidence ethics is fairly important to debate so any issues with that I will tend to default to the other side for the card if you have bad sources/misrepresented evidence if conflicts arise.
For LD, I will vote on Ks or Ts, just explain them well and expound on the standards.
For PF, I'm fairly critical of progressive debate in PF, that said I will vote for whatever as long as it is argued well in the round.
I’m generally good with speed, but I value quality over quantity. If you plan on spreading, send out a speech doc beforehand. And if you're going to spread, please enunciate. If I don't catch what you say because you're spreading and don't send a speech doc (even if you send one I cant promise ill keep my eyes glued to it), you're responsible for what makes it only my flow and what doesn't.
Finally, please have a good time. It won't affect my judging at all, but a good-natured debate that everyone can take something out of is in my opinion worth more than a win or loss.
For background I am a current student at the University of Minnesota, I was in debate from 7th grade through senior year, I was in varsity LD for most of my time, but have competed in congress as well as PF.
If you do a sufficiently impressive magic trick or yo-yo trick in the round, perfect speaks.
Hello! I'm Varshini Bomma (Pronouns: She/Her) . I'm a senior at Eagan High School and this is my 4th year competing in Public Forum debate. I know all the logistics of PF debate so don't fret.
Judging
I am definitely a flow judge, I will only judge what is on the flow. I will judge clear and logical arguments that are extended throughout the round. With that being said, I will not flow crossfire so if you make a really good argument in cross, make sure to bring it up in a speech so I can have it written down on my flow!
Please don't run theory.
Weighing
PLEASE WEIGH! I can only make a decision on who to vote for if you tell me WHY your arguments matter to me. Extend your impacts and use weighing mechanisms to do so effectively.
Reminder to be respectful to your opponents and partner at ALL TIMES and HAVE FUN!!! :)
Don't judge a book by a cover. I'm a parent judge. Support your arguments with evidence, extend your arguments to the end, debate respectably with passion, no spreading, I appreciate signposts, make it easy for me to flow, and enjoy the experience.
email for the chain: tavishichakraborty@gmail.com
hi! i'm a fourth-year varsity PF debater at eden prairie. I mostly compete on the local MN circuit but I have some nat circuit experience as well
I consider myself mostly a flow judge however if your arg is absolute bs please don't try to convince me to vote for it. Also I've seen this one too many times please actually know what you are arguing for! off time road maps are cool keep them short
** FOR STUDENT LOAN TOPIC!!!!!!
Do not run nuke war you will make me sad :(
Also with this topic I've seen a lot of people run framework. if you're gonna run framework in pf ig that's ok but know how to run it
I wanna see a Justification for sure but it would be nice if you have a value and criterion.
Speaker Points:
I'll default to 28 speaks. Be respectful. It's just debate it's not that deep so if you are gonna be disrespectful to me or your opps I will give you the lowest possible speaks and the auto L. 28= mid 29= good, 30= Wow!
^if you make a dad joke or a pun in your speeches I will boost your speaks.
^ If you make a turn spin around while making it. I'll boost your speak and I'll know that you have read my paradigm.
Feel free to email me if you have questions! Good Luck!
A couple of things I look for
- I'm fine with faster speaking but be clear it's better to go slow than stutter your way through your speech because you are going too fast. you are welcome to spread but remember that I will only write down what I catch So if I miss anything cause you are talking too fast my b
- Please have your arguments warranted. tech> truth however I do like a good analytical argument if it makes sense (but remember they are more risky cause it's up to you to make it super clear for me)
- EXTEND YOUR ARGUMENTS!! If you drop something I will consider it dropped off the flow entirely. When you extend evidence don't just extend the card name tell me what it means. I don't like when people extend through ink.
- super specific to but neg rebuttal, please actually remember to extend not just your opps case but also your own.
- If you don't weigh in summary you're basically begging for the L
- evidence ethics- PLEASE PLEASE use real cards from real sources. Let's keep the propaganda to a minimum
- Absolutely no theory, this is local circuit PF do not be doing all that. If you wanna run theory so bad go to LD .
Hi yall, I'm Bruce (he/him) and I will be your judge today. I am currently a senior at Wayzata. Just a few things:
- Be nice.
- Sign post please.
- I'm tech over truth, if you convince me the earth is flat, good for you
- For speeches, there will be a 10 second grace period, after that nothing will go on my flow.
- Make sure to time yourself and your opponent, I will time too but you shouldn't rely on me.
- Debate is an activity, please treat it like one, don't make it too deep.
- Run theory if you want, but make sure I can understand it.
- Make one line in the FF rhyme for +.5 speaks
- Do a 360 every time you read a turn for +.5 speaks
- Bring me food if you want, it will not impact my decision but I'm always hungry
- Please bring new evidence in the rebuttals, don't just cross apply cases.
- I don't flow cross but I will be listening in, so don't lie. If something interesting comes up in cross, I'll catch it
- Have Fun!
Hi! I’m Henry - I’m a senior at St. Paul Academy, been debating for 4 years on the MN/Natcirc, did okay - if you tabstalk me that’s weird.
Throw me on the email chain - henrytc24@gmail.com
TLDR: tech>truth, no -isms, please come to round pre-flowed, be nice and have fun!,
General:
-
Will vote on anything as long as its warranting, has an impact, and is weighed
- pls collapse in summary (or 2nd rebuttal) - going for everything in the back half will make me sad and the round will be messy
-
Speed is chill, i can prolly flow like 225wpm ish w/out a doc
-
That being said, speech docs are cool and if u send them for case/rebuttal, ill boost ur speaks
-
Any offense/defense u want me to eval has to be in summary and FF
-
Pls weigh i beg you, making me decide which offense is more important means i have to think and that is hard
-
Dont extend through ink, people do it way too often and it makes me very sad
-
Warrant everything in case that isn’t super obvious
-
2nd rebuttal needs to frontline everything you wanna go for in the back half
-
Weigh your turns
-
Weighing in rebuttal is cool and is like prolly a good strat if you got extra time
-
Defense is NOT sticky
- please do not extend through ink it makes me very sad
-
Extensions in summary and FF need to be legit extensions - actually go through the link chain, it doesn’t take that long
-
Also its rly sad when like a team is winning, but then doesn’t extend their internal link or their impact, and then i gotta be like “yo you didn’t extend this so like…”
-
Pls do actual weighing: Prereqs>Short Circuits>Link-ins>everything else
-
Probability weighing isn’t real
-
Weigh your link ins
-
Timeframe weighing needs to have warranting attached to it saying why the sequencing of events actually matters
-
I will listen to cross, won’t flow it
Theory
-
Theory is chill, friv theory is chill too (if u genuinely think something is a good norm, then like read it)
-
Generally I’m anti-disclo anti-paraphrasing, but ill vote for whoever wins the theory debate
-
Read in shell format pls
-
Make sure your interps are well worded
- pls make sure to extend all parts of the shell in the back half + DTD
Ks
-
Ks are chill too - altho I might not be familiar with whatever you are critiquing, so pls explain it to me like im dumb (because I am)
-
Im pretty comfortable with cap, security, fem killjoy, military stuff, anything else you should explain it to me like I’m 5
-
Run Ks ethically
-
Have actual solvency under your ROTB, whether its an alt or method or whatever, makes sure you actually get offense
-
You should probably have framing in your K, pls have good framing that actually is useful to push your opps out of the debate
-
Framing in substance rounds is cool too
Speaks
-
Speaks are kinda cringe ngl, so like I’ll try to give y’all good speaks
-
I’ll start at a 28.5, and go up and down based on speaking style and strats
-
Being blatantly racist, sexist, homophobic etc.. will result in L20s (its not that hard to be a decent person)
-
Insta 29.9s
-
If you rhyme throughout your speech
-
If you play a beat and give your speech to that beat
- Bonus: if you do rebuttal to runaway by Kanye and fit a response in between every 3 beats, I'll give you the 30
-
If you do a 360 every time you read a turn
-
Kicking case and going for 5+ turns in the back half
Info about me:
Hi, I'm Amelia, I've been debating public forum for 4 years in the local circuit. I'm the debate captain and I've done pretty well for myself I think. I'm a flow truth judge(?). I will buy ANY reasonable argument. If it remains uncontested I will vote for you. My email is Ameliaeric05@gmail.com. Add me to email chains you may have.
Speed: I have no speeding preference but unless you are going to rap and rhyme your whole speech please don't spread. Go fast but make yourself clear and understandable. I start for speaks at 27 and then go up and down based on your skills.
Theory: I don't mind any theory and find it interesting, no disclosure theory. It's stupid.
Rebuttal: Rebut and refute please attack clearly(signpost) thx
summary- please paint a narrative at this point and weigh heavily, and explain why I should vote for you.
crossfire: my favorite part of the debate and my specialty, make it fun and spicy.
WEIGH AND EXTEND YOUR ARGUMENTS!!
Please feel free to ask me ANY questions! Thank you for reading!
Have fun!
Hi!
I am a parent of a debater. I am a software developer and business owner.
Some things you should know:
· Be nice and respectful. Try not to talk over each other.
· I will take notes throughout the forum.
· I will not bring any of my personal biases into my role as a judge.
These are the criteria I will judge:
· clarity of case
· clearly stated opening argument
· use of facts and examples
· overall clarity of presented argument
· crossfire - well-constructed questions and answers
Treat me as a flay judge. I pay attention to what is going on in the flow but at the same time, I prefer the lay appeal and narrative style of argument.
Weigh, Weigh, Weigh. Make the ballot easy for me to write and weigh your cases and impacts and show me that they are better than your opponents.
As for speed, I can handle speed but at the same time, I'm not gonna be happy to hear full-out policy spreading in a PF round.
I would not suggest running theory on me but if warranted properly and the theory itself is not abusive then I will consider it in a round. If you run disclosure theory, say goodbye to your speaks.
I fully believe in truth over tech.
I prefer on-time roadmaps and on-time signposting.
I don't have a preference when it comes to speed; just be clear and coherent with your arguments. If I can't understand what you are saying, I won't flow it.
I hope to see a respectful round with healthy competition. If negative language or behavior is used, that may cost you the round.
Other than that, I am pretty flexible and open to all debate styles.
email: ejackson24@bsmschool.org
Please time yourselves and keep track of your prep time! I will also be timing, but be careful not to go over.
Please weight in summary and final focus - I need to know why I should vote for you and why your arguments and impacts outweigh the other team.
Do not go too fast, and remember to speak clearly.
Remember to be respectful and kind - and most importantly, have fun.
Anyone who quotes Shakespeare and references a One Direction song in their speech gets +1 speaks.

hi! i'm a fourth-year varsity PF debater at eden prairie. i mostly compete on the local MN circuit but i have some nat circuit experience as well
i consider myself a flow judge, so please please please make sure that I know where you are in the flow for all of your speeches (so PLEASE signpost)!!! off time road maps are cool, but make them quick
FOR STUDENT LOAN TOPIC!!!! do NOT run nuclear war with me because that is stupid as hell and you will make me sad :(
a couple things i look for:
- i'm fine with faster speaking, but please make sure that if you're speaking quickly you're also speaking clearly! if you try to spread (speak super fast), i'm less likely to understand the points you're making, and it probably won't end up on my flow
- tech>truth. all of your arguments should be warranted - if you can not explain to me why your argument is true, you will have a less likely chance of winning (that being said tho please dont waste my time with an insane crazy completely bs argument )
- EXTEND YOUR ARGUMENTS!! novice debates tend to drop arguments and evidence so guys please keep extending. when you extend evidence cards, explain to me what your evidence says besides just citing the author.
- super specific here but neg rebuttal, please remember that you have to respond to both your opponents' case AND your opponents' rebuttal to your case. hopefully this advice is not needed but i have seen one too many neg rebuttals just completely ignore the aff rebuttal
- weight weigh weigh!! throughout the round, i want to hear you guys weigh your arguments and impacts - tell me why your impacts matter more
- if you run framework i'll weigh it, but please run it right!!! tell me WHY we prioritize your framework, make sure you have real justifications
- interact with your opponents' arguments! make specific responses; show me that you understand their case and clearly compare it to yours.
- evidence ethics - PLEASE PLEASE use real cards from real sources. keep the chinese propaganda to a minimum
- absolutely no theory, this is local circuit novice public forum you do NOT have to be doing all that!! If you wanna run theory so bad then go to LD
speaker points: i'll default to 28 speaks and go up or down based on your performance in the round. 27 = can be better, 28 = mid, 29 = good job, 30 = you knocked my socks off! if you're rude or disrespectful or racist/sexist/homophobic etc, you are getting the lowest speaks i can give you and an auto L. debate is a fun activity so let's keep it that way!
i will boost your speaks if...
- you physically spin around when you make a turn on your opp's case
- your case is in comic sans (show me proof before round)
- you make a dad joke or a pun in any of your speeches I will boost your speaks. please please please make a joke. It can be a bad joke I do not care I just want to see that you've actually read my paradigm!
- auto 30 if you bring me a taco bell baja blast
most importantly, have fun and good luck! feel free to email me if you have any questions :)
Hi, My name is Tiffany Kebabe. I've been debating for about 3 years now, so I know what's going on here. No funny business. I like clean, fair, respectable debates. I don't mind offtime road maps. Make me proud. Ps.: if you can make an argument in Swahili, I will bump up your speaker points, automatic 30 points if it's pronounced correctly.
My email: Tiffa_Kebab304@ahschools.us
Hello debaters!
I'm a high school senior in my third year of Public Forum debate, so I've been where you are. It's totally okay to be anxious before a round, but having confidence in yourself will help both your speech quality and my judging of the round.
I'm a fast speaker myself, so I should be able to keep up with any speed other than spreading- if I can't understand what you're debating, I can't flow your points. Try your best to signpost and make it easy for me to follow your contentions and rebuttals. A little weighing goes a long way, and extending points throughout the round helps strengthen your arguments.
I weigh the round based on speaking and argumentation: I'll give the win to the team that made it clear where to vote and how they won the impacts of the round. Be strong and defend your points, but treat your opponents with respect. Please don't be rude. Remember that this is still a high school activity, so have fun with it!
Good luck!
Email: mathanliu@gmail.com
tldr: tech>truth, speed is fine, just send speech docs if you spread
General
- Don't say offensive things! (your classic -isms) (WON'T BE TOLERATED)
- Be kind to your opponents and your partner. (I always hate seeing partners being mean to each other)
- Don't be rude during cross
Substance
- 2nd rebuttals need to frontline
- Warrant your frontlines and responses
- Any offense or defense you want me to evaluate needs to be extended throughout the entire round. (Defense isn't sticky)
- Please make sure any weighing you do is comparative or I won't evaluate it
- Please collapse in the debate in the back-half!
Kritiks
- ROTB needs to be super clear
- There is a lot of potential with Ks, I evaluate non-topical and topical, but I am more versed in topical Ks and think they are super underutilized
- Very fun if run properly
Theory
- I think paraphrasing is bad and disclosure is good
- Even with this in mind, I am not going to vote for you just because you read one of these shells, prove to me why the opponents deserve to be dropped for it, don't just expect an insta win.
- Theory should be purposefully read, absurd interps that are frivolous are bad
Hello! I’m an assistant coach in PF at Eagan High School. I debated PF for 4 years in high school.
I use they/them pronouns. Please check your emails from Tabroom for your opponents' pronouns and don't purposefully misgender people.
I prefer fewer, well-explained arguments to ten poorly warranted contentions. Please explain your warrants logically as well as just stating evidence. I won't easily vote for an argument that I don't understand; although I ultimately vote off the flow, the clarity and reasonability of an argument will help you a lot, especially if it's close.
Don’t be rude. I’m not impressed by how loudly you can talk over your opponent in crossfire. Try to have fun (it’s just debate, guys) but failing that, don’t stop your opponent from having fun.
Do not speak or whisper during anyone else's speech. If you want to talk to your partner, write it down or message them, but it's rude to speak or whisper while someone else is talking and I don't know how it became such a norm. Additionally, do not speak to your partner during your own speech. I will dock speaks every single time I see this happen and it will be cumulative.
Please weigh. Weighing means comparing your impact to your opponent's, and specifically telling me why yours is more important. For example, don't just say "We outweigh on magnitude because our impact is 900 million people in poverty." I know that 900 million people in poverty is bad, but so is nuclear war. Tell me that you outweigh on probability because a recession is significantly more likely than a nuclear war. Bonus points if you weigh weighing mechanisms (for example, tell me why I should vote based on probability instead of timeframe).
I’m honestly not that fast at flowing, and I often don’t get authors/sources. I’ll do my best, but if you just say “Remember Feinstein” and move on, I probably don’t remember Feinstein, and I can’t vote off something I don’t remember. Explain stuff to me in every single speech.
I will not vote on disclosure theory. I will most likely not vote on any other kind of theory. I don't understand it and even if I did try to evaluate it, my decision would probably not make sense. If the round has an accessibility issue (ex. your opponent is using harmful/discriminatory language), you can point it out to me in a speech and/or respectfully ask your opponent to change their behavior in crossfire, you don't need all the fancy formatting.
When your time is up, finish your sentence (in a reasonably concise way) and be done. If you go 5sec over, I’ll stop flowing. Once you hit 20sec over, I will verbally cut you off. Please don’t make me do that. If your opponents are consistently going 10+ seconds over, I’m probably gonna be more lenient with you on speech times, but don’t take it too far either.
Anyways, don’t stress, don’t be rude, you’ll do great :)
Ima senior at Saint Paul Academy as a varsity debater and am ight tabstalking is weird but I'll be real I only debated for two years lol
Lemme hop on that email chain -> humza.murad.2006@gmail.com
Before anything else - I will drop you for any -isms: racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. Just be a good person - especially in cross.
-
I will vote for you if you win the weighing pls for the love of god weigh your impacts and turns. If you don't weigh in rebuttal thats fine but I need it in summary for it to be evaluated.
-
with that being said if you have time in rebuttal - weigh
- With the weighing make sure its comparative and you aren’t just repeating back to me your impact - actually tell me why it’s more significant than your opponents
-
Extend your arguments in summary - don't just repeat it back to me but tell me how it fits in this round and explain the links
-
2nd rebuttal needs to frontline pls
-
I dont flow cross but I will listen - dont be a bad person during cross thats definitely not gonna help your cause
-
For case reads, there is a difference between being passionate and being loud - I am like 3 feet away from you no need to yell in my face
-
When you do weigh - dont just throw buzzwords in my face without actually explaining them. Use words like magnitude, scope, etc but dont just throw in 50 and expect me to buy all of them. If you have a pre-req or a link-in, focus on that
-
Do not bring up new arguments past rebuttal - if I hear a new argument in the back half of round I wont flow it
-
PLS PLS PLS collapse in summary and final focus I really do not wanna hear all 4-6 contentions again just collapse on an argument and tell me why I am voting for that contention. Do not tell me to vote for you and then proceed to read, extend, and frontline all 3 of your contentions in summary
Speaks:
-
Id rather just give you guys good speaks so dont give me a reason to not aka if you do a nono and pull a racism ur getting a 20
-
If you extend case and weigh then ur looking at a 29-30 - if ur a novice and extend + weigh thats a 30 bc good job yay
-
30 speaks if you rap your case to a beat or if you dont have a question in cross and tell a joke that makes me laugh
If you don't know what any of this means then email henrytc24@gmail.com
Remember at the end of the day its just a good time :)

Hi! I'm Harshita, and I go by she/her pronouns. I debated at Eagan High School for three years, and I'm currently a freshman in college.
The way to my ballot:
- Please be respectful. Aggression isn’t necessary to win a round. Your speaks will tank if you are disrespectful, sexist, homophobic, ableist, and etc.
- Weighing and extending your case. WEIGH. WEIGH. WEIGH. Comparative analysis should happen in all of your speeches throughout the round. It is understandable you will drop arguments and condense your arguments as the round progresses (please do appropriately). However, while doing so, please extend your narrative/case for the round and why YOU should win the round- this should be extremely clear to me in summary. Don’t make me choose what arguments to vote on. You should decide that for me with consistent and comparative weighing. Your arguments should be clearly explained and warranted.
- Signpost. Whenever extending any cards or evidence, make sure to signpost. In addition, briefly explain what that card was about and how it applies to your argument/why you’re extending it. I will not just extend a card, if you say “Extend Rund 19.
- Speed. I can flow pretty well, but please don’t spread. I would consider myself a flay judge, and oftentimes, you will do a better job laying out your narrative and voters for the round if you just slow down. (Keep in mind- PF is a category where someone random who has knowledge of the topic being debated should be able to sit in the round and understand what is going on).
- Good evidence/ethics. Please try to stay away from paraphrasing/making up evidence (PF has gotten really bad with this.) Just use well cut cards like a normal debater, and if for some random reason you have to paraphrase, follow the NSDA rules. If there is any kind of a rules/ethic violation, bring it up in round, and I will try my best to evaluate it.
Other:
1. Speaker Points
-
I will start at 27 for all debaters. If you received less than a 27, that means you said something offensive and were not a good person in round.
-
I will give out relatively high speaks as long as you are a decent human being, and you speak clearly and respectfully.
- Ok time for the fun stuff:
-
+0.5 points -> Every time you read a turn, sing it to the tune of a Taylor Swift song.
-
+0.5 points -> Say something nice to your opponents at the end of the round.
2. Time. I will time your speeches and keep track of your prep time. However, I expect you’re also timing yourself. If you’re a few seconds over time, I don’t mind; if you’re more than 10 seconds over, I will stop you.
3. Also, try not to run theory if you can.
Be good, and have fun :)
Hi, Welcome to my Paradigm. I'm a Varsity debater and I've debated for 4 years. I would consider myself to be a flay judge, so I really like the persuasive side of debate. Give me a good clear logical story and you can get a W. With this being said though if your argument is wiped off the flow though then, tbh I'm not gonna buy/vote for that issue. GL to whoever is reading this and have fun.
How to Win the Round.
-Warrant Well
- Weigh Well
-Be as clear as Possible
-Speak Up
-If you spread, your Cooked
-Understand your opponents arguments
-Cross means nothing to me tbh(however if something important comes up during cross...say in the next speech, dont lose).
- + Speaks if you listen to J Cole.(Tell me your favorite song)
i debated PF for 4 years at eagan high school and graduated in 2020. I've been coaching for PF since then for wayzata high school.
***add me to the email chain! (email chain > doc) feel free to ask me questions before the round or to shoot me an email: shailja.p22@gmail.com
general:
- offtime road map: My biggest pet peeve is when you give me an offtime road map and then don't follow it. keep it short and really I just need to know where you are starting unless you are doing something weird.
- speed: i consider myself a flow judge. tech>truth. a case doc doesn't replace your speech. i can flow pretty fast but don't spread. naturally, the slower you go the more i comprehend. so do with that as you will.
- ks, theory, etc... : I a) i don't have enough experience with these kinds of arguments and thus don't feel comfortable evaluating them and b) think they create a barrier in the debate space.
- framework: this is pretty obvious - if a team gives me a framework I will vote off of that (as long as it makes sense) - if you have a FW and the other team doesn't that doesn't mean you win.
plz do not aggressively post-round me :) ask me questions but don't yell at me - i'm not going to switch my decision
how to win my vote:
- weighing: say the words " we outweigh because..." it makes it easier for me.
- signposting: just do it.
- voters: have them and write the ballot for me.
- evidence: evidence ethics have gotten so bad in debate these days. don't take forever to find evidence (speaks will go down). make sure you have cut cards. do not paraphrase.
- extensions: don't just extend through "ink". don't just say "flow Smith over". explain to me what smith says and why it matters in the context of the round. make sure if you say something final focus it is/actually was in summary and vice-versa. if you are the second speaking team you must respond to offense from 1st rebuttal. defense is not sticky. this is given, but if you want me to vote for it at the end of the round have it in every speech.
- overall, please have fun while still being nice and respectful. no one likes to watch an aggressive debate round.
4+ years in debate
be kind and respectful
flow judge (some leeway for novices)
time your own (and opponents speeches, knock gently if they are overtime)
Hello, I'm Armaan (he/him) and I will be judging y'all today. I'm a senior at Wayzata and have debated PF since Junior year and Policy the 2 years before that.
- Be nice and respectful. I will not tolerate any form of hate speech
- Signpost and do weighing.
- Tech > truth, if you can convince me that aliens are going to kill us all and your opposition doesn't counter it, then I will buy it lol
- You are responsible for managing your own time and tracking your opponents' times
- I won't flow cx unless one side makes a major concession that changes the whole round
- If you go more than 10 seconds over time on your speeches I will stop flowing. Also try to maximize your speech times, don't finish 30 seconds early because that's just wasted time.
- Debate is not all that, please do not take it too seriously, we are here to have a good time.
- Theory in Novice is a little iffy, but if you genuinely believe you can win on it, go for it. If you are not sure please for your own sake don't run it.
Good luck and have fun!
hello! My name is Lexi and I have been a PF debater for 3 years. My favorite colors are orange and pink and my zodiac is Scorpio (nov 20).
style- i am typically more into accessible debate. if u are tech, that’s completely okay, in fact, tech can be great! however, i want any Joe Shmoe to be able to watch your round and be able to understand the bare bones.
constructive- please go at a pace that is comfortable for u and others in the room. this is not a rap battle. that being said, if you are able to fit in one line of any Nicki Minaj song into case/any speech i’ll give u extra points
rebuttal- please please please signpost!! also please make sure your blocks are responsive to the round. don’t just read a card and move on.
summary- it is the most important speech in debate in my opinion. this is where you find what really matters from rebuttals. at the end of the day, you could have the most fire blocks ever, but if you don’t bring it up in summary then it means nothing. being up the voters or key points of the round and try to explain how exactly you win on those points.
final focus- tbh as long as u don’t fumble too much, i’m not worried about it. just push voters and weigh. i want you to explain this to me like I've never heard of debt relief before in my life.
cross- i will not flow it but that’s doesn’t mean it’s pointless. don’t feel afraid to really get into it. don’t be afraid to reach over the table (joke joke this is a joke tab) if you want to scratch Grand cross, both teams must agree to it before the round but i’m okay either way.
specifics- dropping things is okay!! if you find that it isn’t gaining you offense in the round, protect ya peace. weighing is so important in pf and should start as soon as rebuttal. please make sure you cite at least the author and date for any cards. if you have an email chain you can put me in ( lexi.sande698@gmail.com )
Speaks- I'll start you off at 27 and move you up or down depending on how well you use strategies, the validity of your points, and your overall speaking ability. bonus points if you do an interpretive dance during crossfire. if you lose nuclear war that’s automatic doc in speaker points. if you win nuclear war, that’s automatic bump in speaker points. bonus points if you bring me an ultra paradise monster energy.
I love watching expressive debates, make it interesting pls. If you make me audibly laugh I will give you a raise in speaker points!
most importantly, debate is meant to be fun. be kind to your opponents, they can be great lifelong friends!
TL;DR: tech>truth, good with speed but not spreading, If you want me to vote on something it needs to be in summary and final focus, well weighed, and extended with warrants, send docs, have fun. PLEASE COLLAPSE IN SUMMARY!!!!!!
Hi! I have debated for Lakeville for 4 years in PF. I have competed on the national circuit and I have seen success with 5 silver bids and 2 gold

Tejas Neneman
Debate needs to be a respectful and open space if any of your actions do not reflect that or inhibit people from being comfortable in the debate space your scoring will suffer. Most importantly have fun, debate is an activity where you are supposed to learn in a fun atmosphere.
I do not flow cross if you want me to vote on something mentioned in cross it needs to be in the next speech.
Preferences
- Frontline in second rebuttal, if you don't I will assume you concede all first rebuttal
- Signposting
- Meta weighing
- Clean warranted extensions
- Collapse in summary
- Extending stuff in FF or summary (that's the only way I'll vote for what you want me to)
- Prereqing/ link ins/short circuits are cool
- Tell me exactly what I should vote on
- FF should write my ballot
- Use a beeping timer to stop your opponents from steal prep or speech time
Some pet peeves:
- Going to the round without preflowing
- Paraphrasing
- Taking forever to send and share evidence
- Interrupting people in cross
- Taking way too long to ask a question in cross
- Being mean or condescending to your opponents
- Post rounding
- Giving an off time road map that is more than 5 words
- Using the words pathos, ethos, or logos
- Saying something was dropped when it clearly wasn't
- Saying "we outweigh on _____" and never giving a warrant
- Saying "I-E" more than 2 times in a round
Evidence Issues (credit to Maddie Cook):
- Evidence ethics in PF are atrocious. Cut cards is the only way to present evidence in my opinion. At the very least, read direct quotes.
- Evidence exchanges take way too long. Send full speech docs in the email chain before the speech begins.
- Your cases should be sent to the email chain in the form of a Word Doc/PDF/uneditable document with all the evidence you read in the debate.
- It shouldn’t take you more than 30 seconds to locate a card, and if it takes more than 2 minutes, I’ll strike it from the flow and start dropping your speaker points.
- The only evidence that counts in the round is evidence you cite in your speech using the author’s last name and date. You cannot read an analytic in a speech then provide evidence for it later.
- Evidence comparison is super underutilized - I'd love to hear more of it.
- I will always prefer to vote for teams with well cut, quality evidence.
- I don't know what this "sending rhetoric without the cards" nonsense is - the only reason you need to exchange evidence is to check the evidence. Your "rhetoric" should be exactly what's in the evidence anyway, but if it's not, I have no idea what the point is of sending the paraphrased "rhetoric" without the cards. Just send full docs with cut cards.
Theory:
I'm not too experienced in theory debate but do understand it. If you want to run it go for it.
- Frivolous theory is bad.
- I believe disclosure is good and paraphrasing is bad, but I will listen to answers to these shells and evaluate the round to the best of my ability. My threshold for paraphrasing good is VERY high.
- Even if you don’t know the "technical" way to answer theory, do your best to respond. I don't really care if you use theory jargon - just do your best.
- "Theory is bad" or "theory doesn't belong in PF" are not arguments I'm very sympathetic to.
- A counter interpretation is not an RVI. RVIs are a completely separate (and bad) part of the debate.
Kritiks:
- I am not super well versed on most K lit, I would err on the side of over-explaining your arguments.
- When extending the K, don't just reread the entire thing.
- You need an alt or its going to very difficult for me to vote on it
- Understand your own args
Please feel free to ask me any questions about my judging before the round
I am a PF Debater with 4 years of experience, and I am probably somewhere between a flow and tech judge.
Spreading is ok but discouraged as I will not weigh anything I miss on the flow. Kritiks are fine as long as they are topical, but I will generally vote against you if you run theory (disclosure theory is extra cringe, I will never vote for that). I expect both teams to keep time properly, but I will still keep track. I will stop flowing at 10 seconds overtime and drop speakers at 20 seconds overtime. Please keep track of how much time you take.
I believe debate should solely be argued off of facts, so while I will vote on a false argument if it is conceded I am far more likely to buy it if the other team tells me why it is false. I do flow cross if it seems important, but I will not vote off of it unless it is explicitly brought up in a speech that isn't final focus. I will listen to final focus but I will likely not flow it, so don't be surprised if I don't flow during final focus.
You've probably already heard this already but being racist, sexist, homophobic etc. will get you dropped on the spot.
Hopefully this isn't too intimidating, the main thing is just to have fun and don't be rude.
Stop asking me if I can handle speed. The question is can you handle speed? If you are clear and persuasive that is what matters. If you speak fast and don't articulate that is not an indictment on my ability to handle speed it is a lack of clarity.
Hope that helps everyone answer the question.
I was a HS policy debater from 1993-1997 for Bloomington Jefferson. My coaches and influences considered themselves "Dinosaurs" at the time, which was my training and shaped experience. I attended summer camps at colleges for three years including Northwestern my senior year. I have a current debater, so I debated and I am engrossed in the current with my own student at Blake.
General
Please add me to the email chain! k.stiele@gmail.com AND blakedocs@googlegroups.com. The first speaking team should initiate the email chain. Label it along the lines of 'Tournament Round number aff speaking team + speaking order vs. neg speaking team + speaking order. I understand that you are not advocating for your personal views and it would be unfair of me to inject mine. I try to be tabula rasa, however I acknowledge that it is impossible to be truly without biases.
I don't care whether you sit or stand, or what you wear.
In general, if you take more than two minutes to send evidence I will start your prep time (and if it is a persistent issue your speaks will decline). And decline is a euphemism. Similarly, rudeness will also tank your speaker points.
I don't believe in sticky defense. If you want something to matter in the round than it should be in every speech. You have time.
If you want to win the round, the main thing you should be doing is weighing the most important arguments in the round and extending them throughout speeches. I will not be voting for a bunch of blippy arguments you make throughout the round but rather a few arguments that are properly warranted, compared through weighing and extended throughout all speeches. I will not evaluate new arguments in ff and you shouldn't be introducing new evidence after 1st summary.
Ks and theory are fine, I ran Ks during my policy career (specifically orientalism). I do prefer actual topicality over Ks, however. I also default to reasonability on Ks, don't run wack Ks in one of my rounds, I will be very disappointed
I dislike IVIs. I would probably intervene before you got the chance to read an IVI if this is genuinely an issue.
On theory, I default to reasonability > competing interpretations. In public forum there aren't a lot of reasons for the competing interpretations, and at a certain point you just have to gut check. I would vote on competing interpretations if you convince me why I should.
I vote on what is in the round, so if you don't say it, I don't weigh it. If you think "I should just know" something don't assume that say it. Please weigh in summary and final focus, and it's even better if you set it up in earlier speeches.
I was a policy debater, so the idea of an RVI is really silly to me, RVIs are bad and it's not a reason to vote for you if there was a genuine violation.
Warranted Cards > warranted analytics > unwarranted cards > unwarranted analytics
I will disclose and give a RFD after the round if you ask me to. I generally don't give high speaker points, a 30 would have to be basically perfect.
Have fun!!!
Hi! I'm Taara and I'm a senior at Blake. This is my 4th year debating PF for Blake. Please add me to the email chain: tcverma24@blakeschool.org AND blakedocs@googlegroups.com
Tech > Truth. I will be flowing all your speeches and will make my decision based on the flow with as little intervention as possible. I do not flow cross, so if you want me to evaluate something that happened in cross, bring it up in your speech.
Evidence: Please read cut cards, and if your opponents ask you for evidence you must be able to send the fully cut card. If you paraphrase and your opponents call you out for misconstruing the evidence, I will call for the evidence myself.
Please send out case doc and rebuttal doc before speech as it helps speed up evidence exchange. I will heavily bump your speaks if you do this.
Speaking: Speed is fine - don't spread though. Don't be rude especially in cross - I'll tank your speaks. Being assertive is great, being aggressive is not. Racism/sexism/homophobia/ableism/etc will not be tolerated and will result in an auto L.
For novices:
TLDR: TO MASSIVELY INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING THIS DEBATE, EXTEND ONE OF YOUR CONTENTIONS AND WEIGH IT.
1. Every speech after constructive must answer the speech that came before it. For example, in second rebuttal make sure to respond to the responses the other team put on your case (as well as respond to their case). It's unfair to the other team if you only respond in 2nd summary or 1st ff. I will not evaluate any new ev/args after 1st summary.
2. Please please please don't make me intervene when pro says one thing and con says the opposit. Do the evidence/warrant comparison (post-date, empirical, meta-study, greater sample size, etc).
4. Please weigh your arguments (including turns you're going for)! Magnitude, probability, Prerequisite, etc. and give a reason why your argument outweighs. If you just say "we outweigh on magnitude" and move on without comparing the impacts and actually explaining why, I can't really evaluate it. Also, make sure to respond to your opponent's weighing, otherwise I'm forced to intervene.
5. In summary and final focus, extend the links/warrants(reasoning)/impacts of the arguments you're going for. You cannot just say, "extend our C1," "extend the defense," etc.
6. Please narrow down the back half of the debate! Don't try to go for all contentions in case and all responses in rebuttal. Pick the best args and explain them well. If you're going for a turn, you NEED to extend an impact to it.
7. No new args/ev in 2nd summary or after. In 1st FF, expanding on weighing from summary is ok, but nothing that hasn't already been introduced in the debate.
8. Please signpost and number your responses (tell me where you are on the flow)
9. Keep track of your own prep. Also, I won't evaluate anything that's read more than 10 seconds over. Please time your and your opponents' speeches.
Progressive stuff:
Please don't read theory or Ks! Framework is totally ok though.
Most importantly, don't stress and have fun! You got this :)
